[The Telegraph intv.] Coldplay: 'Rock music has nowhere left to go’

I´ll preface by saying I am not crazy about Stargate production on each track either. I can think of several tracks on AHFOD I would have liked to have sounded more organic and less "synth" (Up&Up comes to mind)

And when Chris pushes the band to work with people like Avicii and Stargate behind their backs, things change. Were they accepting of it afterwards? Sure. Why can't he respect other people's boundaries? Why is he exempt from the bands' rules? Why is he pushing his former/current/future lovers and musical idols on the albums?

Woah...you must know Chris intimately to come out and say how he´s pushing his lovers? LOL Ok I´ll say this. As far as I understand, most things come from Chris creative-wise (most songs), even though since Viva they have learnt to be more a band and creative inputs come from several members now. However I am sure his ideas get shot down constantly! haha (Will´s flaring nostrils comment come to mind haha). See the lyrics to Hymn as an example: he changed the whole meaning of the song cuz the others would not let him get away with it :) (rightly so imo haha).

Also Will and Guy both spoke very enthusiastically about Stargate production so they certainly seem quite pleased with it. I am pretty sure you´re right that the idea came from Chris, but no way they would go along with it if they could not stand behind it 100% imo.

And ASFOS: he made his case to the band and so they allowed the song to be in there. Doesn't seem to me he "pushed their boundaries". Its just how collaborations work.

They want to enjoy what they are doing right now and do not have misery or melancholy in their life that overrides the happiness they feel. They are being honest artists! And that is a crime?!

Oh and I am an old player whose favorite track is murder and the spies demo version

I like how you put it..."not having misery that overrides the happiness". I kinda like to aim for that in my life too, as much as I can, to overcome whatever sadness and pain we all inevitably feel so that the light is always stronger. And Coldplay is very inspiration on that regard I agree! :)

Wow, an old player posting something like this...I am pleasantly shocked *LOL* :) Btw Spies is the first song I heard by them, it has a special place in my heart :)

There was always something raw and powerful about Coldplay. They weren't the most unique band. But in a world of soulless music, they had heart. Feeling. Some depth. Jonny's lovely guitar riffs and Chris' little piano lines brought everything to life. Will's energizing drums and Guy's understated bass plodding along.

This !!

OT Where I can find these demo versions?

May add MX is a bit agressive, has rebellion notes because of the album concept. While AHFoD doesn't fight with something or struggle, it just flows :)

Hey nice point! I totally agree. I see Viva as "stirring the status quo up" major struggle revolution, MX as "we are still struggling but we are sparkling our colours too" and AHFOD as "we are resting in our colours" :) And yes I agree it just flows.

Coldplay's rock cred is definitely dead if Chris continues to write perplexing lyrics like "2gether thru lyf" or "you're so cool" at the end of Birds, or "the most beautiful-est of treasures" in Army of One. This is the same guy who wrote slightly profound things like "night makes a fool of us in the daylight" and "give me strength; reserve control". Whilst sonically the band have gone through a massive change from rock to overproduced pop, their lyrics have even more so.

Bit deliberate choice of quotes there hehe One could argue that he´s the same guy who wrote "And it was all yellow" *Lol* Songs like Fix you or The Scientist re not particularly deep to me lyrically as a whole. We find great lyric moments in AHFOD too in several songs. To quote a couple from Birds:

"it’s a fool’s gold thunder

it’s just a warring rain...

but someone had put the flares up

and got me in the rays"

I think he always had a blend of straight forwardness and more intricate lyric style. It almost looks like its "hard work" for him to come up with the lyric content, so he´ll manage some but not all of it hehe

Very valid points. Its just that I used to feel something more when I listened to his lyrics and I'm trying to place why I don't feel it anymore. Maybe its me, maybe its him, who knows. I'm just a little sick of the sky, birds, diamonds, heart beating motifs ygm?

Plus, Birds is my favourite song off the album, probs because of the passage you just quoted.

Pointless debate. No one is actually providing any valid counterargument to my comment challenging the band's absurd point of view.

They claim rock no longer has anything to offer so they choose to write unimaginative and inept pop trite instead. That is beyond nonsensical!

Noel Gallagher thinks otherwise though. He even likes Coldplay's work post Mylo Xyloto.

"He said: “If I get asked a question on anything, I give a straight answer… Not because I have any sort of agenda or because I’m trying to whip up any kind of hysteria.” .

Gallagher is also apparently tired of being asked about Adele: “It is interesting that no-one ever talks about my love of U2 and Coldplay, but there you go. Lately, the one I’ve been asked about is Adele.” .

So would that mean, one of rock's greatest guitarist has a bad taste in music? I think not. So yeah, i'll take his opinions any day. He is honest, frank and straightforward anyway. Liking or not liking music, is all about personal taste and opinions. If you think, its inept pop trite then okay, its ur opinion. Nut other people do not think it is trash/ shit pop.. that doesnt mean they have bad musical taste.

^ Jesus, what is with the criticism. I think the fact that these bands made it onto the top charts is a good thing. Can I remind all of you that Mylo Xyloto, Ghost Stories, and A Head Full Of Dreams exist? The bands I mentioned before have made songs WAY BETTER than Princess Of China.

a matter of opinion and musical taste. And yes, MX, GS and AFHOD do exist an Thank God for that.

This doesn't have to be a bad thing. I get it, they don't want to be like AC/DC, ZZ Top, Creed, Nickelback or The Fray and make the same album several times over. That's fine. But does it have to be pop? Does it REALLY?

If they're going to go on this bender about the importance of evolution and contributing to music and then release another rather pop-laden record like GS and to a lesser extent AHFoD, than they're being flat-out hypocrites. I don't know who thinks Ghost Stories advances music. I'm not convinced AHFoD does much either. But if nothing else at least it's more talent-filled and diverse.

I'm confused by how they started out as an alt-rock band with a sound popular at the time, they took a complete left turn at Viva where it was unlike anything you heard anywhere, and then they want steadily back to the sound popular at our more recent time. What was that? Can we please do that again!

I need the jazz fusion

I dont see how doing and making music that they like and are actually happy about it be so hypocritical. Explain that maybe?

They like to do the kind of music that they did on AHFOD and they actually said they dont care anymore about what other people think. Does that sound hypocritical? I dont think so

Calm down everyone. It's not Rock that is "dead". What truly appears to be dead here is....dare I say it ? No, you can all complete that sentence for yourself.

Coldplay appears to be as alive as ever. Doing what they wanna do, no matter how people think about their work, is the best indicator of how alive they are. So yeah, I dare you to say it,

Disturbing claims and statements by the band. Rock music is not "done" and never will be. There are exceptional bands and musicians out there experimenting and creating superb rock records, still pushing boundaries and advancing creativity. They challenge their listeners with provocative and captivating music and could change entire generations' lives by scrutinizing all life matters. To question and doubt the spirit and power of rock music is bizarre and quite daft.

There is also a huge irony in that they claim there is not much to be done in the rock scene anymore, only for themselves to then choose to produce manufactured mainstream pop!!!! Absolutely insane interview. I don't know they're being delusional or stupid.

LOL at people calling others stupid at this forum. Intellectual snobbery at its finest. Congrats
