October 13, 200619 yr Review: Snow Patrol: Eyes Open I’ve never liked the label “alternative rock” much. It’s not so much that it’s vague and no longer relevant in its meaning. It just doesn’t roll off the tongue as well as “hyphy” or “krunk” or even “electro-emo-new-age” does. I guess that’s why there seems to be a new word for the same, generic, 4-chord alternative rock every year. And so, when I first heard Snow Patrol’s previous effort, Final Straw, I was pretty much blown away. They were melodic, yet not poppy enough to sound like a McDonald’s jingle. Their music was powerful, yet not so much as to sound like every other “she tore my heart out” band of the hour. Well, Snow Patrol is back with their recently released follow-up to Final Straw, titled Eyes Open. The first single, “Chasing Cars”, is reminiscent of previous singles “Chocolate” and “Run” in that it begins with a stripped down, quiet melody. The song builds to a crescendo of distorted guitars, a four-on-the-floor drum beat, and a quasi-emo repeated hook: “If I just lay here, would you lie with me and just forget the world?” It’s a catchy tune and very much in line with what Snow Patrol fans might expect. Yet the beauty of the album lies is in its more adventurous tracks. The fifth song, “Hands Open,” is a more straight forward rock and roll tune. With a slightly less melodic and more upbeat feel, it stands apart from the other songs on the CD. Unfortunately, the lyrics aren’t all that uplifting, or even unique to Snow Patrol. The chorus repeats the hook “I want to hear you laugh like you mean it” in the same stereotypical and somewhat depressing lyrical style you’d expect from any Coldplay-esque band. Still, the album has some high points. Well—a high and a low point, actually. The slow closer, “The Finish Line,” is a well written song on all fronts. Its floating melody catches the ear with an array of synthesizers and ambient type patches similar to something you might expect from The Postal Service. It is also the most depressing song on the album, with lyrics such as “A distant motorcade and suddenly there’s joy/The snow and tickertape blurs all my senses numb.” In contrast, the first U.K. single, “You’re All I Have” has a poppy, upbeat feel and stands out on the album as one of the few songs you might want to listen to while working out at the gym. The CD has done well in the U.S., selling nearly a million copies as of the printing of this article. The single “Chasing Cars” is receiving good radio play, and I wouldn’t be surprised if a U.S. tour is forthcoming. If there’s one area the where CD feels a bit repetitive, it is in its lyrical content. Though a couple tracks, such as “You’re All I Have” and “Make This Go On Forever”, indicate some level of growth and optimism, the majority of the CD is a bit of a downer. While other bands in similar genres have grown out of a lyrical hole, Snow Patrol appears to have remained lodged in the “she broke my heart” mantra. Still, the musical complexity and style indicate a progression from Snow Patrol’s last album. In my opinion, it is a change for the better. I’d give the album an 8/10. http://www.stanfordreview.org/Archive/Volume_XXXVII/Issue_3/Features/features2.shtml

October 14, 200619 yr okay... this is for everyone who is interested I arrived around 5 pm at the venue the E-Werk in Cologne and there were only 2 girls waiting yet. So i queued up on the steps outside the club nice and early. I didnt take long for other people to show up and get in line. As talkative as i am i found that the two sitting next to me (a man and a woman) had come all the way from near Manchester to see their 9th Snow Patrol show. We talked a lot and stayed together during the whole show and for a while after the show too. One door to the club was open so we could hear the soundcheck of the supportband around 5.30 pm and some time later we could hear snow patrol doing their soundcheck. It was a rather long soundcheck. at least i had the feeling it was... at some point we could hear the glass in the windows rattling from the bass drum. The sound engineers fixed that ... eheh thank god!... My new friend Tracy managed to get in first of us three and we had agreed whoever gets in first will save a good spot in the front row... so she did :yahoo: she snatched a spot a bit left of the middle... perfect : The Supportband, Cinematixx (i dont know if i spelled this right now) where from Glasgow if i recall it right and Tracy and Alan both wooped joyfully... they obviously liked the band. The Band sounded a bit like Franz Ferdinand.. pretty good imho... They played for about 30 or 40 mins...i didnt check the watch... all i know is i liked it and time flew by so quick all evening long.. then after a break and lots of technicians running hetically from side to side on stage it was time for Snow Patrol to get on stage... ahhh.... sooo good!! YEaH!! this is the setlist: Spitting Games Wow Chocolate Beginning To Get To Me Headlights Grazed Knees Chasing Cars Shut Your Eyes How To Be Dead Somewhere A Clock Is Ticking Make This Go On Forever Ways And Means Run You're All I Have ------- Open Your Eyes Tiny Little Fractures Gary was in a great mood, there where only 2 songs i think where he did not play his guitar... and one could see he was really enjoying himself... its so f*cking cool to see this great smile bloom on his face with closed eyes when he is performing... thats so... makes you want to whoop all evening long.. hahah.. I remember Pablo the bassplayer continously flirting and making little jokes with some girl in the fron to our left side... at one point he made a mistake.. lol he had forgotten to switch his bass off adn he wanted to fool around with his bass while he didnt have to play... so his BLAMBLAM kinda broke into the intro of one song.. i dont remember during which track that was... but i was laughing my ass off... Some people in the audience kept yelling stuff to gary... one girl must have called sth like wanta shag? or so.. and gary only smiled and looked a bit shy down and said No, as you can see i am a bit busy here right now.... at some other point someone was calling a song title i dont know if gary didnt understand it or if he was joking (i think he was joking...) but he said: what? are you calling me an asshole? oh you are? well thats ok then. because i really am an asshole!! so here are some pics... i didnt film at all this time... my cam is just not made to film at concerts... Tracey filmed one song.. i´ll try to get that and wil post that here asap (ah.. in bigger size they look much better... but.. this size fits the forum better) i made a couple more pix... so if you want to see them all you can download all my pictures here: http://rapidshare.de/files/36755925/SnowPa...gne10-10-06.rar
