What’s going on with the soundchecks?

Featured Replies

Hello,

Have you seen all those old songs being played during soundchecks since the beginning of the American leg?

It’s probably the most exciting thing I’ve heard from Coldplay in many years...
Do you think it’s for something special at Wembley?

- Warning Sign
- Square One
- Violet Hill
- Speed of sound
- Shiver
- Lovers in japan
- Hurts like Heaven
- Orphans
- Daddy
- AHFOD

Don't forget Crests of Waves at Denver soundcheck....

There certainly is a reason for them to be soundchecking/playing those songs, but I maybe it's for something after the tour, idk? At this point we can only speculate of course. It's fair to say that it isn't an unrealistic idea they will adjust the Wembley setlist(s) and add a few of these to the live set. Perhaps they will have reworked versions of certain songs by then, such as Speed Of Sound (as Chris suggested)?

Anyhow, it's stunning enough to hear these songs during soundchecks, now, in the Music Of The Spheres tour. I'm ready to hear these songs live in 2025!

I don't think there will be something at the end of this. This is not the first time they are using those songs for soundchecks. I remember they soundchecked Crest of Waves in 2014. People were speculating about it. Result? Nothing. I think they are choosing those song because of something about sound they need to check. Or they miss and want to play those song sometimes. But they don't want to change the setlist. Only time they can do that is soundchecks. I suggest you don't get your hopes up that much.

Yeah tbut oo many differents songs at Toronto now, there must be a story behind all this.

Honestly, I'm a bit pessimistic. I have the feeling that after Wembley we're going to have a very long period of hibernation and that this is Coldplay's way of saying "good night"

Look like they’re trying to come up with a daahf/iaam transition... So that concrete. The common point between all these tracks is that they’re instrumental — Chris must be playing something, right? So this orchestra story is starting to make sense.

They are just out there performing my dream concert in the soundchecks lol

Calling it watch the soundchecks be a setlist preview for an alphabetica or LP12 tour

If only. I'm not sure if that'll ever come to fruition. Coldplay might be able to sell out stadiums now by promising all of the greatest hits and Tik-Tok/Instagram moments everyone wants, with the fireworks and lights. I saw them in Denver last month and even more than the AHFOD tour so much of the experience is about the visuals over the music.

But if they toured a massively deep-cut, more musically impressive "Eras" tour, you'd have to wonder whether they would sell out a stadium. Til Kingdom Come, Strawberry Swing, COTW, DAAHF are some of my favorite songs of all time, but they don't lend themselves to the style of concert they've been doing for the last 15 years.

Also... it's time consuming. They have 10 albums and to hit a deep cut on each album automatically takes up about an hour of concert time. I didn't have the good luck of seeing Taylor's Era's tour, but I think most artists are going to have a hard time holding the attention of an audience for 3 hours unless the fan base is really, really hardcore. Maybe I'm underestimating Coldplayers, but based on the Denver show I was surrounded by people who just liked ASFOS and were there to take photos vs actually be there for the musical experience.

I hope that at least a couple of the soundchecked songs are actually played live properly. I'd love to have a good quality recording of Square One and Lovers in Japan live.

It's not going to happen, but I wish Coldplay would do a full show every once in a while which was just the fan favourites with none of the hits (unless they are fan favourites as well). It wouldn't sell out, but at smaller venues it could have a great atmosphere. If Chris Martin turned up at my local pub and started playing old Coldplay songs on a piano, that would be amazing. :laugh4:

I completely agree with you, and I would add: if there are lights, wristsbands, fireworks and you keep five of the big hits (Scientist, Yellow, Sky full of stars, Viva and Something just like this), you could play another 15-18 unknown songs for the tiktok fans, and they would fill the stadium anyway.

I would love to see them in a smaller venue again (the same applies here for U2) but lots of the few available tickets would end in the hands of people that don´t know any of those 15-18 songs (and of course have every right to pay for it).

Agreed!

If there's at least one hit that's worth being played, IMO it would be The Scientist. It's laid back, great vibe, and doesn't feel forced to be a hit at all, if that makes sense. The Scientist has become one of my favourite Coldplay songs ever.

The Scientist would definitely fit in perfectly. As much as I like most of Coldplay's other hits, I generally don't listen to them very much.

I think a lot of the "old players" would come out of hibernation if the band ever did tours that were more focused on music than show. Believe me, they've lost quite a few people along the way — though certainly not as many as they've gained in fans over the past 10 years. That said, I don’t think the band is capable of going back to smaller venues anymore — they’ve become so popular... And, i mean, do they really want it ?

Personally, this search for nostalgia worries me a bit. From the very start of the MOTS tour, I noticed how massive and almost never-ending it this tour. Everything seems designed to maximize the tour, and I feared right away that the band might be "filling up before going into hibernation for a long time"... This "Wembley" seems to confirm that fear.

Tonight...
Speed of Sound 3x
iAAM
MOON MUSiC
Coloratura
Death and All His Friends

There is no longer any doubt that they're preparing something — these multiple soundchecks seem to be recording backing tracks for upcoming shows.

Oh and im very surprised by the return of DAAHF, Isn't it the perfect farewell song?
I was lucky enough to experience the VIVA tour, and the finale with DAAHF was truly the most magical I’ve ever witnessed.

So come over, just be patient and don’t worry...

WOW, I totally missed all of it.... Dammit!!!

Here's the full Boston soundcheck in case you haven't heard it. Somebody filmed the whole thing!

As mentioned before, the soundcheck included

Speed Of Sound (multiple times!) + iAAM Moon Music Coloratura Death and All His Friends

Thanks! I find strange that they´re soundchecking so many "new" songs. If you consider introducing one or two new songs, even if they will be rotating, you don´t soundcheck 10 different tracks...

The 10 Wembley shows in London next month might be used for a new live album?

- It’s been a while so “Live 2025” could be in the works.
- It allows them to take the best takes from any of the 10 nights.

They played DAAHF in its entirety which suggests they are actually practising it for some purpose. In London they might be more comfortable playing such songs, based on the notion that these songs are better known in their home country.

Has anyone already seen this ? According to Live Nation's website, the "Symphonic Orchestra of Venzuela" is listed as a support act for all upcoming Wembley shows.

Let's hope Coldplay will do a song with them, Politik please!

Though, to finish the tour, it would be great if Feelslikeimfallinginlove gets a big orchestra at the last Wembley show.

On Dudamel's official website it just says: Opening the ten Wembley Stadium shows will be renowned Venezuelan conductor Gustavo Dudamel alongside the internationally-celebrated Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra of Venezuela.

So I'm not sure whether they will actually perform alongside the band, or are they just going to provide the opening.

But this is what the official Askonas Holt website says: Facilitated by the Askonas Holt Tours and Projects department, the Orchestra will open the concerts with a programme yet to be announced and will also join Coldplay for part of their set.

This sounds more promising. We'll have to wait and see.
