NUTELLA vs BACON
chocolaty chocolate, with nuts = Gianduja Chocolate made with hazelnuts ground into fine powder. Smooth chocolaty texture, and the delicious flavor of hazelnuts. It's better than bacon because: (1) it didn't oink before being consumed, (2) it taste nuttier, and (3) it had good fats and loads of healthy compounds.

what do you think of paradise now? (after listening to the album)
I think it has a resonance with what we can make happen, a symbolic reference to the possibilities of making anywhere paradise, no matter the location. This could be paradise, with the aid of a snow machine!:laugh3: Or a hoop house with some lush tropical plants, a kumquat here, a tangerine there, a date palm, some kiwi vines, add a few jasmines and orchids in the trees.. some frogs and a few birds to liven the place up, sure would make winter:elf: like Paradise! :daisy::flutterby::woodstock::woodstock: But most importantly, paradise in places that really need it - like the deserts:sunny:, with just a little water:mudkip: and one more s they can have desserts. :chef: ;)

A-Z People Game!!!
I wanted to mention Zenobe Gramme for Z, from Belgium, improver of the Dynamo, without which electricity would be just for whimsical toys, physics labs or museums. Now we can have giant global experiences, like Coldplay concerts. In the city of Liege there is a school named after him, and a statue in his honor.:cool:Zénobe Gramme - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia B is for Bennett Cerf

What Time Is it and what are you doing ??
Life is a bowl of cherries, and I really want to grow Bing Cherries!:P Which type do you prefer? Or are you more of a date & citrus aficionado? The problem in life is that there are too many options sometimes, all of them tempting as plums on a branch, but which ones to pick first? Well, maybe that's not always true, but it sounds better than the more ordinary options I have to choose from right now.:laugh3: Chakra test, interesting in centering one's mind-body relationship on a location of the body, it's good to expand one's experiences. |.......|

Green Cars
Yes, there are some key areas which are in great need of improvement, such as using more eco-friendly batteries and polymers in manufacture and design, and it's electric range could stand some improvement as well, but I have heard of many places which will upgrade a Prius with extra batteries for an extended range of 30 more miles all-electric, so some of those problems are being addressed albeit aftermarket. The rest perhaps rests on all of our shoulders, to create better governance to protect the health of workers and the broader environment, leveling the playing field for all manufacturers. Given the set of options available, I consider the Prius a pretty good choice myself, but worthy of improvement as all of today's crop of autos are. Have you considered the Opel Ampera, which recently won the ECOBEST 2011 Prize? > Well is there a range of possible effects and levels of total global temperature rises, but to me it seems wiser to error on the side of caution, for we have only the earth which supports life on at present, and to save on the consumption of energy can dovetail with improving the quality and enjoyability of the automotive experiences we all have, plus lessen the risks associated with energy extraction. What is it that makes you skeptical as to human generated factors affecting climate change? To what level do you believe we have had an effect on nature? > I think they're worth another look - as time passes, the battery end of things gets better, they offer a solution to those who want to wander great distances occasionally, and they're getting better. Hydrogen works well perhaps in Iceland where the power supply from geothermal is immense, where one can only drive so far, but there are certain technological matters with hydrogen which still limit it a bit as a long-distance fuel, but in the future those hurtles may be overcome, it's definitely a contender and an option, I agree! :) > Comfortable, yes, but comforts can be achieved equally well with virtually any other vehicle. Size is essential perhaps for big people, for large families or for moving goods and for services like limousines for groups at special occasions, but if the cost of size is serious environmental damage and greater risk to human life in places like the Niger Delta, the Gulf, or the Caspian Sea, I think I'll settle for something less massive for personal use. If the option for one is essential in your life, then it's worthwhile to seek an SUV which is up-to-date with the best design practices available for energy and resource efficiency, green technology and materials, and with consideration to worker and resident safety in places where the goods are actually made. As for the all-terrain go-anywhere business, while that is true and useful for a few people (farmers, ranchers, miners, safety patrol officers in the mountains, etc.), most of time I see these vehicles just being used to run errands, as commuter vehicles, or to go shopping with, in which case those owners probably will never use them for anything else. It might make one feel more "in control", but at what cost is that worth it? Let the tow trucks do the pulling, they do that most of the time anyhow, and are much more aware of how to do so carefully so as to not damage the vehicle being towed out of the ditch in winter, etc. Speed humps are there because people go too fast in parking lots and such, which goes along with the problem of bad drivers. Better would be to help drivers get better at driving, reduce accidents in other ways (i.e. better intersections, banked curves), and improve the crash-worthiness of lighter vehicles to bring them beyond the safety levels of where they currently stand.:)

DROUGHT IN EAST AFRICA AFFECTING 12 MILLION PEOPLE IN THE HORN OF AFRICA
I was just pondering this today, considering that three or twelve wise men, kings, or astronomers journeyed across the desert, bearing gifts from far off lands for the newborn Jesus, and perhaps for Mary since the gifts were medicinal as well. If the wise men were from the East as all accounts say, then undoubtedly they came from or traveled through the desert areas to the East: the deserts of Arabia, or of Persia, or of Ethiopia and Somalia. If we are to honor their generosity, it seems only fitting to provide fresh water to these lands, to restore the true wealth of the East by helping the people there plant and water a new garden of Eden. What if we built vessels to send desalination equipment to East Africa, and pumps for the areas with groundwater but uneven rainfall? Instead of a huge US military budget, the same companies could use a Peace Budget to make the equipment and hire and train local people to install it and assist farmers in using the water efficiently, along with solar power systems to run the equipment with - good paying jobs for those in need in the Horn of Africa, for US workers making the equipment, for all the technicians who train others to install the systems, a viable economic growth pattern for the region, a way out of poverty and the extremism that is fueled in desperation. The same idea could be applied everywhere in the deserts of Africa and Asia, turning the driest deserts into giant oases, with all that sun and warmth crop production would be incredible - from dates to olives to lemons and oranges, grains, pineapples, anything which likes hot weather and sun, provided with ample water and fertility, would thrive! The solar power could be used to produce nitrogen fertilizers, and the ample fertility of the land increased with humus crops - we have the power to make this happen, for all we spend on defense in the name of war, we would be much more rewarded spending the money on peace in the name of love, and share the joy.

Americans have just lost the right to a fair trial
Assuming he hasn't made up his mind yet, the proof will be if and when President Obama decides to either sign this bill or not, all probability measurements not withstanding. But after listening to Carl Levin, it looks like Obama'a administration is part of the process eroding out rights as citizens, as well as disregarding the rights of sovereign nations and the rights of citizens globally. Then the President needs to hear from all of us! But to the point Benjamin Franklin said "Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety." The abuse of power which led to revolt is the very abuse of power we are dealing with here today. Protections of citizens' rights were very clearly written into the Bill of Rights specifically because of past abuses of power, and as a bulwark against future abuses of the basic rights we hold as citizens. But even more to the point is the process of the erosion of human rights that has been happening all along, often by a power elite for their personal agendas, or out of their general phobias and desire to cover up their misdeeds and mistakes. What Senator Joe McCarthy did in the 50's we see happening right now, and it's time to stop this madness. The answer to global terrorism is correcting the policies that go along with certain corporate agendas (often with the tacit approval of the ownership) which are mistreating many around the world; remove the unfair acts of a powerful few and their corporate machines, respect the rights of all persons, wherever they may be, and guarantee economic and social equity - globally as well as regionally - then the extreme finds fewer and fewer recruits as healthier paths get taken. What is needed then for the remainder is a matter of international law and international courts; let the rule of law, through applying laws well written with respect to human rights, provide the corrective and preventive measures necessary. For what may remain is a matter of dealing with criminal acts, not a matter of war, and to define things the way we have done is to open up a huge Pandora's box in terms of human rights violations and erosion of our essential Liberties.

Green Cars
..So this gets me thinking - if from 4 to 6 kilowatt-hours of electricity gets you 25 miles of travel in an electric car, then how much building rooftop area covered with solar panels would give you that much electricity per average day? Well the answer is of course a bit nuanced depending on location. For example, one might expect 1 square meter of solar panels at 15% efficiency to yield about 1 kilowatt-hour per average day in Arizona, roughly half that in the Northeast, so for an inhabitant of sunny climes, 4 to 6 square meters of roof devoted to solar panels will offer roughly 25 miles of driving on sunshine. :sunny::cool: Pretty cool on a hot day!

The Awesome Random Posting Thread
> Yes. Introverted and when studying, introverted, but that is dependent of place and time and social setting. Extroverted in other ways and at other times. I think we're all an admixture of the two. But music can be nice, as long as there is no voice to it, for it is hard to filter out auditory voice inputs when trying to consider the matter at hand. Best it to take no chances, get into a Zen state of mind. > Oral exams? Hm.. I've heard of exams conducted that way, sounds interesting! That might not be so easy with advanced mathematics or physics however.. unless it's for one's ability to teach or lecture.. I've heard the periodic chart put to a song, though that's quite unusual!
