second announcement was due Nov 5. now delayed to Nov 11. that can only mean one thing, they are trying to seal the deal with a big name act but they're being tightarses about it.

ok both coldplay and muse are about a decade into their careers (going by release of debut album) compare that to where U2 were in 1989-90. they had already released 5 massive albums and brought out Rattle + Hum, around most of europe and australia they were almost exclusively playing stadiums. now i can only provide an australian perspective. and in 1989 australia was where U2 chose to start their comeback tour (aka Lovetown) they did an 8 night stay in sydney and 7 nights in melbourne. coldplay are no where near that. i'm not saying that coldplay and muse are inferior bands to U2. that would be very hypocritical cos i like cp and muse much more than i like U2. what im saying is that i cant imagine either band reaching the same levels of popularity of U2.

very well said mate. New Moon can try all they like to get these bands out there, the reality is for as long as the record labels throw money at radio stations and other music media to flog their mediocre popstars nothing will change.

i've been trying to convince a friend of mine that U2 is the last of the true "megabands". but he remains adamant that bands like coldplay and muse will one day reach the heights of U2 but i just dont see that happening. yes maybe in some parts of the world they will become huge but i just cant imagine either of them doing stadium tours for the next 20years the current music climate just doesnt allow for it. and last time i checked neither Muse nor Coldplay wrote The Joshua Tree. other megabands = pink floyd, rolling stones, the beatles, ac/dc, led zeppelin and queen.

^^ i think you misunderstood. that was the second line up for "last year's" BDO (ie 2009) just wanted to give people an idea of the calibre of acts announced the second time around.

Lily announced sideshows today. that can only mean that muse should be announcing theirs very very soon. has anyone got their tickets in the mail yet? cos i havent. not surprised though, poor bastards have 300 000 to mail out.

Recent feature albums on Triple J + New Moon Soundtrack - Various + Mumford & Sons - Sigh No More + Wolfmother - Cosmic Egg + Air - Love 2 + Dizzee Rascal - Tongue n Cheek + Philadelphia Grand Jury - Hope is for Hopers + Muse - The Resistance (album was played in full 2 days before it was featured) + Jamie T - Kings & Queens + The Bloody Beetroots - Romborama + Paul Dempsey - Everything Is True imo, save Dempsey and Philly Jays. this list is a very poor reflection of the quality of music that has come out inthe second half of the year. they have totally snubbed the xx, editors, flaming lips and all of the talented aussie bands coming through. instead opting for big names and albums everyone will hear anyways. and since when was triple j too cool to play Pearl Jam? i still love triple j to death but their faults are growing by the minute.

does anyone agree with me in saying that the leak of the "viva la vida demos" was the biggest coldplay related event of the year? or their sold out nights at Wembley bigger?

i dont think briggins was having a go at muse because he has coupled them in with U2, of who he is a big fan. so is this a thread where briggins recommends albums to us? or other way around? or is everything fair game?

^^ thats what the new generation of music fans think. but 5/6 years ago myspace helped give a break to some of the best bands of this era, arctic monkeys being the biggest. aside from that they've put on some great secret show events.

^^ im going to take that comment seriously. if Oasis didnt win last year when they were on a massive "world" tour and releasing an album, how on earth can they win this year? or were you implying that Q Magazine really love Oasis?

^^ if you take a listen to the middle east EP you'll find that the band has alot more depth than just a folk sound. there's a brilliant 52min "mini-album" of theirs floating around the internet and contains an amazing mix of not only indie folk but some great ambient, other worldly, 13min epic tunes. sadly from reports ive heard they havent been playing much from this "mini album" on their current tour.

i'm worried that anything less than an Ok-Computer-esque-effort-no.3 will be seen as a failure.

from the first annoucement the only big band i'm really into seeing is Muse. but if i want to get anywhere near them i will have to be in front of the main stage for a few acts before them (really hoping Mars Volta play late on the main stage), so that will mean missing out others on the outer stages. but the bands im hoping to check out earlier in the day are: Karnivool Midnight Juggernauts Lisa Mitchell The Horrors Tame Impala Rise Against bring on second announcement

ok if you watch festivals and big stadiums shows from the 80s and 90s you will see that the crowd is standing undivided, there are no barricades breaking the crowd into sections. towards the turn of the century in particular Roskilde Festival 2000, crowd crushes were becoming a commonality, at Roskilde this ended in 9 people being crushed to death. so many of these events started introducing D barricades, which separates the front section of the crowd from everyone else. i'm guessing you saw Coldplay in melbourne on their last tour did you notice how the standing area was divided into two sections. thats an example of a small D barricade. a similiar thing is used at the BDO. this is the best pic i could find http://www.airviewonline.com.au/photos/0901-2330-04/Sydney-Big-Day-Out?PHPSESSID=2bef105d44e6f089d022d7115d93c342 see how theres a barricade not far from the stage. that photo was taken at midday. its usually packed by around 6pm and security wont let anyone else in. im not 100% how it all works with people going in and out. you will have to ask alex that. every BDO has a D barricade except the Auckland one. simply because NZ laws are different to Australian ones.

just a little observation. U2 crowds despite being on average a little older are sooo much more lively than Coldplay crowds. since im not getting sound i've been watching the crowd move and the energy level is amazing and relentless. didnt quite get the same vibe from the Coldplay show's ive been to

i;ve been hearing some very very mixed reviews on the BQE. i've heard 4 tracks so far and some of it is quite incredible whereas other parts sound a little odd, as if he is trying to sound all modern and experimental just for the hell of it. i will listen properly post-exams

whats with Edge's wrap around mic? is it something he has started on this tour. looks very britney-spears-esque haahaha. i remember bono was criticised big time when he did that on i think the Popmart Tour.
