Yeah that's the thing. No one would ever say that Eno doesn't enjoy layering on the sound and ambiance. It's why he's famous. It's just he sort of turned Coldplay and all their abilities in the right direction. The X & Y period seems to have arisen from a lot of questioning going on in the bands and Chris's mind. I mean, all the songs are sort of about indecision and feeling odd about things. He doesn't seem to know what's wrong or what to do. I'm probably over-analyzing in saying what follows, but I think some of that personal indecision informed the music. It's like they didn't know what to do. EDIT: Also, the songs that are my favorite's on X & Y are the songs where Chris seems to be in control of the situation. Fix You, A Message and Swallowed in the Sea are all incredible love ballads that are certainly display how earnest his sentiments are. Even if the are incredibly cheesy, you can tell he feels it.

Well yes, but why would someone write a song about gold? :\ Most of Coldplay's songs aren't that thought provoking. It's more of Chris's emotions. And I just found this song brilliantly without thought! :D Perhaps when he talks about the woman asking for a diamond ring there is some bigger stuff going on, but this certainly is not like All I Want is You by U2. :smug: It's just a rock-rollicking song! Worthy of a society. :P

I agree with pretty much all the reasons about why X & Y is over produced. It's not fun too listen to for me. Honestly, I have to sort of make myself listen to X & Y. Usually, I get something out of it. And I have loved Fix You, A Message, The Hardest Part and Swallowed in the Sea since the album first came out. But all the other songs have sort of faded into the abyss for me. The album just seemed generally unnatural to me. That's why Chris said stuff about organic. It's lots of electronic whirly sounds. You can even see it in their b-sides. All of them seem like regurgitated Coldplay to me. Like Proof and Gravity (which aren't half bad songs - I listen to them every now and then) are just Chris trying to do certain songs on AROBTTH. Things I Don't Understand, which I loved when I first heard it, seems like a pretty pathetic song to me now. The lyrics are sort of dumb and the music is plainly annoying after having listened to it a few times. That's it! For me, the thing about X & Y is that, while I liked it at first, after repeated listens it just got stale. REALLY stale. That is even the case for some of the songs I like on the album. VLV seems like the opposite album for me. It's been what? 2 plus years since I first heard all these songs, and sure I don't rip them to shreds with 10 listens a day like I did when it first came out, but I still listen to them pretty much every day. That's a pretty amazing thing to me.

As an avid fan of Coldplay's song The Goldrush, with all it's jolly laughing and happiness, I would like to create a group via a thread under the name...The Goldrush Society. (I am currently studying for a midterm while this song came up and I just had to do this to keep myself sane for a few minutes) Now, I am not certain what being apart of The Goldrush Society will involve, but we can certainly figure that out. At least, it will be a place to appreciate the greatness of The Goldrush. At most,...well that's for us to find out! Thank you. A few reasons I love The Goldrush: 1. It's like NOTHING Coldplay had done. 2. It's looping melodies scattered about. 3. Will get's to sing! 4. Chris sings too! 5. Everyone gets to talk in it. And it just seems like a culmination of all the fun of the studio sessions. 6. That said, it's got the least discipline (and probably because of that the most) and it just goes all over. 7. It's fun. 8. People are laughing. 9. It seems like it has no real meaning other than being fun. I mean, "Why use a mirror if a mirror don't shine?" That's ridiculous! EDIT: As am I because the actual lyrics are "what use the metal if the metal don't shine?" But that's even more ridiculous than what I had thought before! 10. can't say i really care to get into the debate. i like both bands and it's not a matter of whose better day to day but just what i feel like listening to. regardless, mad old quote. also...that photo is HILARIOUS.:laugh3: geez that fake quote at the bottom made me laugh really hard. but can i just say, despite it being a 7 year old quote, that i'm sort of surprised he said that he was worried for them. clearly coldplay have dealt with the limelight pretty well - as we all know. but it is surprising to me that he even thought to care.

wow that must be it. because it's pretty seriously up there in terms of popularity. glad to see people went back to Coldplay and aren't just satisfied with the American Idol version. :cool:

Maybe I'm a bit weird, but I usually check out how my favorite bands are doing on iTunes every now and then in terms of whats selling the most and other such things. To my utter surprise, I went on iTunes just now and saw that The Scientist was topping the charts of Coldplay's songs - by a significant margin. Now if there is anyone out there like me, you'll know that this song usually finds itself in the 4-7 slots in terms of popularity. Maybe more like 3-6. Regardless, I have never seen it topping the charts. For one, Clocks is always in a better position than it. I wonder if anyone has any thoughts on why this spike has occurred? Was it played on TV recently? Or something like that? I don't know, I just found it very interesting and wondered what people thought. It's also pretty much my favorite Coldplay song, so that added to some of the appeal of making a post about it.

That would be truly truly truly awesome! A album that take's the titles of famous novels! I mean...I'm sure some might have issues with this, questioning the bands creativity - but personally I think that's incredibly clever and cool! I want to know if anyone else has mentioned this though. Maybe I'm reading into Chris's words before the song too much, but he makes it clear to say, "This is a new song". I have NO IDEA why he would say that if it weren't potentially album material. I mean come on! They did plenty of goofy songs throughout the World Tour that clearly weren't given much thought to. But he said, "this is a new song". I would love so much if this were a new song. Listening to the high quality download has made me like the song even more! An album with story song titles...:smug:

Yeah, I don't know about not being mainstream. This song seems as mainstream as any. If anything I thought Viva was less mainstream than most of their albums. It was pop, but not mainstream pop. I don't see any real difference in this. It's certainly an upbeat song, but Viva was an upbeat despite it's darker lyrics. The thing is, this is also them performing the song live. Songs change a lot in the live presentation. They lose a lot and they gain other aspects. I said in the live thread that I thought this song might make the album. But after reading some of these comments, I'm beginning to think it won't make it past the tour on an album. Maybe it'll be a b-side. Also, as so many have noted, a good deal of it sounds like Bruce.

I didn't first get the Bruce reference. But now I do. Guys, please. It's really not a big deal for us to discuss stuff like this. We're Coldplay fans. We aren't people out to get them. I also have to be honest, the continuous riff that's going through reminded me a bit of some stuff going on in viva la vida. on the whole i enjoy the song. i realize it's in concert so we can't be certain how it will turn out exactly, but i liked the speed to the song. it's also nice to see that the photos Roadie 42 puts up of them all with guitars in the studio has translated to new material. i know they've been doing this stuff in concerts, but it'd be cool for some big acoustic stuff like that in LP5. that said, it's certainly possible this was just the acoustic. I DO think this could be an LP5 contender. frankly, they've been working for quite a few months on and off now, and if they're debuting a song i have a feeling it's not just some throw away. maybe the whole don quixote thing is just to protect the song's eventual title - Spanish Rain - as some have said.

I think we should all probably step back and assess this. Brian Eno just said they could be done by Christmas. Done certainly isn't released to begin with, what with all the mixing and other production stuff. Brian also doesn't seem to be the point man on any of this. I know he's helping them create stuff and stimulating their growth, but I don't think he has much clue when they'll be done. The way he spoke seemed a little bit like he wasn't sure himself. Basically I would be shocked if it came out this Christmas. I'd love it! But i'd be shocked. I expect an early 2011 release as well.

i think you are right - that's what they've been saying since the auction. all the stuff won't be given away until after the final dates. if they played new music that would be AMAZING. i doubt it will happen though. it's the Viva tour, they'll want to keep it Viva.

yeah they ruled out live CD. much different then live DVD. i have to agree with many people here. with a tour of this magnitude and, in honest appreciation of coldplay, creativity, there just has to be a live DVD. Truly this is the biggest tour Coldplay has ever done. And if any of the reports are true, and Coldplay plan on doing smaller venues for their next tour, then this tour has to be a DVD because it generally makes more since to give the BIG tours a showing. honestly, u2 has how many live DVDs? practically one for every tour. they made their live shows events. coldplay has done the same with the Viva tour. it needs to be showcased in DVD format. honestly, i think it would be a great disappointment from the band if they didn't have a live dvd.

while i think its kind of stupid to act like coldplay were stealing a lot of arcade fire ideas, i also think its stupid to affect their influence. but yet again, arcade fire made waves with funeral like few bands had done. they have influenced probably thousands of artists. most of which we'll never know about. coldplay obviously also worked with markus. so yeah. pretty obvious that there would be some overlap in production sound. all this said, let's please come to terms with the fact that coldplay in NO WAY ripped off arcade fire with the Viva la Vida sessions, tour, etc. they are two very different bands. two very good bands in my opinion. but two very different bands.

i got the reference just so you know. i understand some people had some fun at the post-starter's expense - mostly, i assume, for the drama of it - i don't think it's that big of a deal. i mean, people here are all sort of amiable together. i don't think anyone meant anything bad. that said, you just have to look at the returns from the auction. they made SOO SOO MUCH money for charity. i don't really know the charity, so i'm not pretending to be some uppity person. i just know that they've done a good thing. if they've lost something special, they've helped others gain much more. that's truly the christmas spirit.

i'm a pretty big fan of snow patrol - i have bought their last three albums. that said, they've had very few "great" songs in my opinion. i loved some of the stuff on final straw, it was very emotionally raw. then eyes open was a great record in my opinion, just track to track great. the break-up emotion was pretty great. and i say all this stuff about emotion because that's what i feel snow patrol are all about at their best. this last album had a few songs that stood out for me, like crack the shutters and planets bend between us, but on the whole i found it with quite a few holes. i don't expect them to reach coldplay or u2 ever. mostly because coldplay are moving up at the same time. if coldplay had stagnated i might understand the desire to get "into their league" but i don't think it's possible. it's a nice sentiment though. i really hope their next album sees them stretch themselves a bit more. they're one band you see that sort of...moved their style to fit the prevailing style of the time, and with that they seem to have lost some originality. this being only my opinion. so i don't mean to offend anyone who finds them unique. once again though, i'd love if they could have a great next album. as a fan of music this is good for us. i'm not much into band competition. and we're better than them blah blah blah. if they find a way to tap into some more raw emotion or on the other end make it a bit more artistic, then i can see them doing well. but if they keep trying to make chasing cars 2, well then i don't think they're dreams can be made real.

while i may sympathize with your concerns starter of this thread, i've got to say i think you've taken it a bit too far and are assuming their own feelings based on your own. like someone said, whose to say all of this stuff means a whole lot to them. of course we know some stuff does, but i'm sure if it was anything truly truly BIG they will have held onto it. just like other people have stated. and once more, this is for charity. its not like a garage sale for their own pockets. (one - that'd be fucked up to profit even more on your fans, two - then it wouldn't make sense to sell stuff they liked in the first place). they are giving this money to a cause they believe in. i have never found coldplay's evolution alarming or too great myself (i have in fact found it quite perfect based on my own evolution), but i can understand if you might long for different days. but there will always be bands making parachutes era type music. just go out and find them. although i'm sure you have. in the end this whole clearance sale is just a further indication of how grand a band coldplay is. they truly are doing a great thing here, and it'd be an awful shame to let object attachments to hinder the improvement of others lives. these are objects which have been accorded meaning. the meaning doesn't leave when the object does. just keep it within your own mind and heart now.

ok i would love to get my hands on some of this stuff, but i imagine its going to be so ridiculously priced. i mean, after a while the fact that it was theirs will wear off a little bit. im definitely not trying to be a downer, i guess im just not sure ill go after anything. i also have never used ebay... and let me say i do realize its going to charity, so obviously that will be and incentive to bid more.
