Just What Does "Mylo Xyloto" Mean?
That was me Juanma - i just posted that on billboard.com - I can't take full credit for finding the artist mylo - someone else on these forum found out about it, and i took a look at the site, and totally fit with the theme of their songs and it is absolutely brilliant. Graffiti was and is still a form of alternative media, communication to the public that is almost subliminal at times but trying to get out the truth, unlike our mainstream media sometimes. Xylo is a community of graffiti artists i think actually, although mylo has something called xylo in his/her artwork - and someone else mentioned xylo may be a root word for wood, and perhaps the precursor for wood art that then evolved to graffiti art. here's a link to one of the images - http://www.xylo.me/2.html http://www.xylo.me/ (the main page) It's an absolutely brilliant title, in that it will get a mass of people to look this artist up, and see the images, and thus get the message out to even more people. Coldplay are such an earnest, and humble band, using their popularity and fame to get out real messages to the world even if they were not the original creators - artists supporting other artists - if you read the billboard interview - he mentions how the artistic community need to stick together and work as a team to bring messages to society. They have really upped the game. bravo Coldplay.

I'm bleeding from my face because I don't think this album title is very good.
MYLO XYLOTO is absolutely brilliant and will get the word out even more - What do I mean by that? Well someone alluded earlier in this thread if it is a reference to the artist Mylo in London that Coldplay may have happened upon in their walkabout in the city. Absolutely - it's a homage and a great way for people to hear about this artist, specifically bc he/she has some great messages that people need to hear or see e.g. (the increasingly police - like state we live in (look I like security and agree with better intelligence in fighting terrorism/fanaticism but in this day and age - surveillance has gone up tremendously and we sometimes don't even know about - ergo, The newspaper scandal in the UK, FBI in the US, etc.) second, another diagram shows an hourglass inside a circle representing the time that is running out on our natural world, and that we can't continue to ignore the mass extinction event that is occurring with so many species on our planet, as well as the obvious climate change that is making this world more uninhabitable for a majority of the people on this planet. We need to wake up folks - we can't live in isolation, the environment affects everyone no matter how much money you may have. If there is no water to drink, it doesn't matter if you're the Queen of England, you will suffer. This album title will catapult this artist to the fore like nothing before, and xyloto is origin/precursor to modern day graffiti (and hence the alternative media - hence Major Minus Media - perhaps the protaganist's underground network or form of communication to others trying to wake up and fight against the groupthink or the propaganda in a totalitiarian, oppressive world. Again, what a great title. I can't wait to hear from the artist Mylo and if he/she has ever met the band. Mylo really inspired them, and I think this may be one of the best albums to come out in a while, in terms of concept and them. Especially in this day and age. Bravo Coldplay - you make living that much better, and keep hope in the music world. Keep rocking on, and here's to Paradise - can't wait to hear it. Again, the title is absolutely genius in getting us to learn about the messages that are in the public that we need to take notice of.

Coldplay: The Billboard Cover Story (and Chris Martin Q&A) - all pg.1
Well that was a very good interview, i love hearing Chris' musings, worries, and read the swings in his mood. He's such a self conscious guy who is so surprisingly successful in spite of his worries and constant nitpicking. Anyway, my analysis of CB was correct in that the story of the album is about a budding romance in an oppressive world. And the inspiration for Major Minus was totally orwell, and interestingly enough The Road by Cormac McCarthy which I saw the film - holy cow - that movie was trying to stay alive and keep a sense of morality and hope in a bleak and hopeless world. That really puts that song into context, and continues the theme of fighting against the evils in the world. Also, Love that Brian Eno keeps pushing them, and finally gets Jonny going - He is such an underrated guitarist, and truly is shy. I understand why Chris is practically in love with him, i mean, his contributions to songs are so simply elegant but he can totally shred if he wanted to. The fact in lead guitar playing it's easy to shred, but really hard to balance it out, and make the song really work. In this album songs that we've heard we can totally how much Jonny is owning the album. And after reading Brian Eno's declaration that Jonny's on to something - I agree. Thank you Brian Eno for knocking some sense into these guys. Can't wait for the album.

I'm pretty sure Charlie Brown will be the first single picked up from LP5
R the Kooks that good? they have a new album coming out, and I might check them out when they come to nyc.

The Many Mystery Messages Of Mylo Xyloto
Yeah - coldplay's obsession or reference to the number 42 is taken from the hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy by Douglas Adams. A classic sci fi novel. one of the themes or subplots of the story is the Ultimate Answer to the Ultimate Question of Life, The Universe, and Everything. The answer was 42 which led to so many theories by fans of the book, but in the end Douglas Adams said it was just an arbitrary answer - my guess is that his point was that it's something different for everybody, our purpose, our goals, and our experiences which shape our journey in this so called life. Thus coldplay's fascination with the 42 (Those that are dead, are not dead, there just living in my head - perhaps the question of whether people are ever really dead, or always alive in one's mind and memories. Hence it's inclusion in Viva La Vida and Death and All of his friends. It's a brilliant track, and i hope they develop an arc to that song, perhaps a trilogy of sorts.

" Major Minus " LP5 Title?
I actually the title - because it's clearly an outright reference to the artist Mylo in London - they must have seen the artwork/graffiti/etc. around town and found out about him, and went with that theme. The xyloto part has been dissected in the the other threads which may be a play on the word the artist used for cameras. Wow, I love it, love the cover, can't wait.

Paradise! The next single expected to come Sept. 12!!!
Can't wait to hear the new single - Paradise - I love how Coldplay kept it secret, and made it look that charlie brown may be the next one which I like as a song, but thought it would kill the anticipation and suspense for the prerelease of the album. Can't wait to hear more about the song from interviews that are sure to build up. I'm going to the Las Vegas radio concert, so it will be out by then. wow, i'm in heaven, well it's hurting like heaven. What a great day.
-
What will be the next single from LP5 (MYLO XYLOTO?)
I guess people were wrong - Charlie Brown is not the next single, thank god, like the song a lot, but it would have been something already heard and not something that builds anticipation and suspense. Glad they have another ace in the hole - can't wait to hear this one - will it be Viva La Vida worthy? probably not too hard to follow up that kind of song, but i'm sure it will be another classic if it got by Will Champion.
-
I THINK LP5 WILL BE CALLED 'MYLO XYLOTO'...
I agree, great leg work by finding that artis Mylo (and then the Xyloto) - I also, in a earlier post, felt this was legit and totally makes sense with the theme of the new album. I mean Coldplay may have never contacted the artist but were absolutely inspired by the messages Mylo was trying to send to the rest of society through graffiti, postings, pictures. So excited for the new single - this may be their second ace in the hole (I posted on other threads stating i thought CB was a good song, but not 2nd single worthy or technically the lead off single for the album). This song title was out of the blue, no guessed this one surprisingly. I'm super excited - and I think Coldplay made a homage to this artist as well as other artists that keep trying to wake us up to the reality of the world. Can't wait to see the tracklisting.
-
Does Charlie Brown sound different??
it's definitely the intro to Life is for Living, it doesn't sound like it goes with CB at all - there's no uncertainty about it. They recorded it twice for JKL that's why you hear it like that. Again, no piano outro to CB, it's for life is for living, it's like an impromptu intro to the song. I don't understand why some coldplay fans can't reason and think everything is something which it clearly is not... anyway love that life is for living is coming back, such a classic from parachutes. and perhaps in theme for the new album's concept and story.
-
Rate 'Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall' now!
Exactly - it's such an exhilirating song and has such a great buildup - Can't understand such hate for this song - they took ordinary chords/sample from another song and made it into a symphonic masterpiece. I turn the music up, i got my records on.... love it! It has to be on the album, and it will be for sure despite the hate.

Is Charlie Brown THE BEST Coldplay song...EVER??
In A Telescope Lens, I dont think die hard fans opinons of songs always translates into the rest of the public buying into it, plus I've seen many times where songs are just hated or not as lauded by the die hard fans but give it some time perhaps a year, and they reverse their initial assessment of it. Case in point, w/ ETIAW - which I think is a much more uplifting and exhilirating song than CB (and I like CB, but don't think it will be as a big of a hit). CB has a catchy riff but there's no other musical ideas really explored in the song except for the riff playing yet once again (perhaps except for the middle 8, but it's not really that interesting of a musical idea either (around "all the boys, all the girls"). Then cue the riff again. Now look at Viva - starts with an ostinato of strings in a repeated chord progression, but there are nuances added to the layering of the song as it progresses - specifically in the strings itself, there are different riffs underlying if you listen closely in the 1st interlude, then 2nd verse, the strings are playing another riff, then another - it's brilliant. Then launches into the world famous chorus. 2nd interlude, has atmospherics perhaps courtesy of Eno. 3rd vers - the strings again, are a different riff, then the piano comes in. I mean this is an intricate song more than the same riff being played over and over (a la CB). Great middle 8, then launches into the global ooah, ooahs. I mean wow! In my place (which they've tried to emulate w CB, it's got the same structure)- catchy riff, but has a great chorus w/ a great chord launch by Jonny. in the 2nd verse, jonny adds a subtle guitar part that's so simple but just adds so much (he is ridiculously talented at that btw). But the lyrics in the outro - sing it please, please, please, come back and sing to me, to me to me - that elevates the song even further - don't see that w/ CB (again I like the song, but as a single, it will be a minor hit, but this is coldplay, and they can do better, i think CB would be better as a 3rd or 4th single frankly). And to defend ETIAW lyrics - it is totally relevant to the album's themes (as inferred from interviews, the outfits, inspiration) of hope in a desperate/despotic world, music as an art form of liberation/revolution against tyranny, and that we need to wake up to the important issues all around us though are not told through traditional media (groupthink) but alternative ones like graffiti, underground music, poetry, modern art. "I turn the music up, I got my records on I shut the world outside until the lights come on... And all the kids they dance, all the kids all night Until Monday morning feels another life... From underneath the rubble sing a rebel song Don't want to see another generation drop I'd rather be a comma than a full stop" It's an amazing song, which begins with simple synth chords but then elevates itself into an exhilirating and uplifting catharsis - jonny's amazing guitar riff which then accelerates into a great rhythmic idea in both the acoustic and electric guitars, adds more layers with the bass and the drums and we've taken off. Even though it may not have a traditional chorus (more near the end) it has the lyrical melody that makes it a great song. The end is amazing, it just keeps getting bigger and bigger and ends w/ a great drum solo. Beautiful. CB - is a good song, but again musically (ideas) there's not much there. The lyrics I'm still trying to break down, but it sounds like a young guy being initiated into an underground movement (perhaps the protagonist of the album's concept/story) in a very Big Brother type of society. He decides to find out the truth for himself, and this group shows it to him. Then the lyrics reflect the passion to fight against tyranny, and to have hope in a desperate world. In the process, perhaps he falls in love with another member, and though the world is not great, they have hope, passion, and their love may be a beacon/light in the world of darkness (we'll be glowing in the dark). All in all, I am super excited about this upcoming album, and want them to be successful, they truly are one of the great modern bands, and perhaps will be remembered like u2 and the beatles. I enjoy these discussion tremendously, but too often i see groupthink on here w/ regards to songs being crap and everyone piles on - in this case, ETIAW (which again is brililant, and musically there as well as lyrically). CB will be a good single, just not the 2nd one from the new album. it needs to be another song that we haven't heard yet - their 2nd ace in the hole. But i'm afraid it's going to be CB based on their recording for Jimmy Kimmel and essentially the introduction of the song to the American Media Market. But regardless, here's to another wild ride on Coldplay's amazing talent.
-
I'm pretty sure Charlie Brown will be the first single picked up from LP5
It does seem like Charlie Brown will be the next single from the album given they played it specifically for Jimmy Kimmel and in essence the American media market. Now, I like the song, but I really don't think it's as strong as other singles in Coldplay's past specifically in lead up to an album being released. ETIAW is definitely on the album and frankly comes off more uplifting and exhilirating than Charlie Brown - again, the riff is catchy in CB, but that's all there is pretty much (now viva - had strings rather than the traditional guitar, plus there were a lot of different string riffs along w/ atmospherics courtesy of Eno perhaps in that song, plus it had a chorus, and a great outro with universal whoa's that everyone knows and sings. In my place, had catchy riff, but had a great chorus that was very singable for everybody. CB does not have that and there's not enough change in motifs/musical ideas to make it interesting enough to be a strong single, it's a decent single, but not that great - I really do hope they have 2 other quality A type of songs given that we've heard maybe half of the album already. If CB, HLH are considered the next singles then this album may not be another great one, but a decent one. Viva as an album had some great singles - LiJ, Litii (which i consider a part of Viva, I can't believe they didnt' think that song was single worthy initially, and just made it an instrumental - sometimes I dont' understand these guys) Viva, Violet, Lost, Strawberry Swing, and even Death and All his friends was an amazing song that was single worthy. I like these new songs - I think frankly the strongest ones r ETIAW and Major Minus out of the 5 or so we've heard. I don't think Major minus will be a single even though it shows another side of Coldplay most people don't associate w them namely, that they can rock out if they want to. Anyway, will be interested to see the tracklisting and hope that they're other single worthy songs on the new album that we haven't heard (perhaps Viva level). Can't wait.

Is Charlie Brown THE BEST Coldplay song...EVER??
Yes those songs do have the same riff throughout but with Charlie Brown there's no real chorus or acceleration into a release like In my Place - where Chris sings "yeah, how long must you wait for this... and Jonny kicks into a chord progression. On viva - it's strings that have a lot of different riffs underlying the basic chord structure, plus there's an obvious chorus, and the interludes are much better with all of the atmospherics courtesy perhaps of Eno. I don't see that with Charlie Brown - it's nice, i like it, i don't think it's their greatest song, and based on my impression so far it won't be a massive worldwide hit, it will be a minor hit for sure, but I would not release this as the next single, perhaps near the third or the fourth one.
-
Is Charlie Brown THE BEST Coldplay song...EVER??
I like charlie brown a lot but for some reason it's basically the same riff over and over again - don't get me wrong it's a catchy riff, but I feel it'll be a minor hit but not viva la vida level for sure. I really do hope they have at least 2 other grade A quality kind of songs that could become worldwide hits that they're saving for the album. Right now, I don't see that with Charlie Brown, and frankly having this recorded for the Jimmy Kimmel Show tells me that it might be their next single released from the album. Overall, not a strong single like Viva that's for sure. I hope that's not the case bc they need a strong single which I think ETIAW was but not strong enough apparently.

I THINK LP5 WILL BE CALLED 'MYLO XYLOTO'...
This is a legitimate find and most likely the inspiration behind the album - It makes sense from the new songs' lyrics - Chris even mentioned it would be a concept about a couple fighting against the world (if anyone remembers something he mentioned watching The Wire). Major Minus - w/ one eye watching you, be careful what you do. ETIWA - maybe the trees are gone... from underneath a rubble i sing a rebel song. Don't want to see another generation drop, want to be a comma, not a full stop. MTM - we'll never see the earth again. CB - be a bright red rose come bursting the concrete HLH - Written in graffiti on a bridge in a park... Don't let them take control, No, we won't let them take control...So on concrete canvas and a glow in the dark Concrete canvas, I will make you a mark Armed with the spray can soul It's so clear it's about revolution against the establishment who keep us in the dark - hence the allusions to ufo's, what's really happening in the world, the climate change and the mass extinction of species that is going on and most r not aware of it. I looked at the mylo's site - he has another page with universal symbol of the hourglass in a circle representing the time that is running out on this world. I guess coldplay saw that and were inspired and want our generation to realize this and not become a full stop, but rather a comma (ETIAW reference, for all the haters, love that song btw, it will be remembered and a coldplay classic). The graffiti is a way for society to communicate to each other in a subversive way, much like subliminal messages, but it's a symbol of humanity crying out and warning us and wake up (kind of like the Matrix). I think it's brilliant and love this new concept - this album may become our generation's Wall or something similiar (i'll reserve judgment until it comes out. Kudos to all the investigators - I truly can't wait for the album and to hear their take on the concept and the inspiration but it's clear from all the images, lyrics, symbols what it's all about. Regardless of the name, people will listen to it bc Coldplay, and I think they realize that - and if they can bring awareness to the environmental struggle we are in and going to be in for the foreseeable future then who cares what the name of the album is going to be. Bravo Coldplay - they are truly a special group of 4 + 1 (PH of course). btw, if any of you r interested about the ufo, conspiracy thing - check out Billy Meier - one of the truly fantastical stories out there but very much suppressed in the media - theyfly.com or the future of mankind - billy meier wiki. It will blow your mind away - i wonder if coldplay have checked him out and were also inspired.

ETIAWF, MM and MTM wont be on the actual Album?
I absolutely think at least every tear drop and major minus will be on the album - All these people wanting more are just greedy. Coldplay work really hard to put out quality songs - The uproar about Every Teardrop being not a good song or quality is funny to read on these forums but personally I think it's a brilliant song that takes a simple chord progression/sample and elevates it to an all out euphoric and triumphant song. It's definitely on the album, and probably one of the anchors for the album (I'm paraphrasing Will's words when they were recording X & Y - He mentioned What If, Fix You, and Swallowed in the Sea as songs that were immediate to him and the band and served as focal points for the album). So there is no question it is on the album - Major Minus, i initially didn't know about but after listening to it a couple of times, it is an amazing song, Jonny absolutely rules out - what amazing guitar lines and kick ass solo - without a doubt it will be on the album not even to mention that it is on their clothes/uniforms. Though, Twisted Logic was the name of their X&Y tour but was on the album, so... but I think Major Minus will be on the album. As for Moving to mars - I think this will be the b-side or extra whatever. Didn't fit in with album or theme though space, aliens, psychedelia seems to be themes of the new era so moving to mars sounds like bowie's life on mars title. Anyway, ETIAW will be on the album despite the detractors - if Will approved it for single status then it's definitely an important song per his tough standards.
-
I think we can safely say now.
I'm going to have to step in and counter this constant refrain of these songs are better than Viva's songs - r u kidding me, practically every song on Viva was unique and high quality. Life in Technicolor i and ii - brilliant, great sample, great instrumentation, and beautiful melodies. CofL - sinister opening, and then kicks into a great atmospheric rock song (totally Sherlock Holmes vibe, I'm talking about Robert Downey's Sherlock) Lost! - awesome rhythm section, and great chord progression and chorus 42 - has to be one of my favorite songs - obvious homage to A day in the life song structure, but coldplay's take on it, love the hitchiker's guide to the galaxy reference, and awesome middle Lovers in Japan/Reign of Love - a great combo, i mean the opening is so Enoesque, and the marchlike rhythm in lovers in japan is a testament to Will owning the album, and again great vocal melody. Then one of the most underrated tracks - RofL - beautiful, vintage Coldplay (supposedly they have a 20 minute cut of this song, it could go on forever and i wouldn't mind). Yes/Chinese Sleep Chant - Coldplay evolving, middle eastern vibe, and Chris using a lower voice register, then paying homage to shoegazing band w/ the wall of guitar sound in Chinese Sleep Chant - Viva - don't have to go into how brilliant this song is Violet Hill - at first, i was like what, but it is a great song in its imagery, tone, and killer guitar by Jonny, then a beautiful ending w/ Chris on piano Strawberry Swing - simply sublime, guitar lick, claps, and the middle rhythm guitar, and vocal melody Death and All his friends - another underrated track - how beautiful this song is w/ it's quiet intro and duet between piano and guitar and then just launching into a euphoric middle and end. Don't get me started on Prospekt's March - another brilliant album and w/ many unique tracks Glass of Water is an absolute favorite. The Viva era was probably one of Coldplay's best creative output, and I think will be hard for them to match. I didn't know about Every Teardrop, at first, but I really like it, and it's infectious and totally Coldplay. I think what happens on these boards sometimes, every one jumps on this bandwagon or same think about how crap a song is, but then a year later everyone is liking that song which was actually pretty good. ETIAW is a great song, and i hope it's on the album, as for the other tracks heard from the concert, not sure how unique they are - like some of them, but i feel like the songs are not as unique or intriguing as the Viva era so far. We'll have to wait and hear the studio versions to get a better idea. But you gotta love a band like coldplay who consistently bring great music on each album. Viva la Vida! (and I hope to god the new album title is not Major Minus, bad title).
-
Which is your favourite new Coldplay song?
To be honest I didn't know what to think about Every Teardrop is a Waterfall - it sounded ok, but it really grew on me and will be a hit as people hear it live. It will be that song a lot of people hated but will realize it is a really good song. As for the other songs - Charlie Brown sticks out for me - it's got that signature Buckland guitar riff (for which he has an amazing talent for, and has helped coldplay be unique to a degree in their sound) Hurts like Heaven - great opening (synth bells, and waves/strings) - then Arcade Fire show up, which is not a bad thing. I like the song but u can't deny the Arcade Fire influence - nice guitar riffs by Jonny again in the interlude. Major Minus - like the opening acoustic guitar part - initially didn't like the vocal melody line as much but it sounds good at some points. Like jonny's parts on this - he's really taking over the songs and being a guitar hero on this album. Us Against the World - decent, so far. Not like See You Soon, Reign of Love, or Kingdom Come. I kind of hear Fleet Foxes influence. will have to hear the studio version. But again Jonny comes and elevates the song. He is really owning this album. Princess of China (don't know if they're trying to do the Asian country song groupings - Lovers in Japan) haven't heard a good recording of yet. But seems promising, has a bit of a asian strings thing going on though so perhaps the China reference. I don't know if there is a bit of David Bowie influence (China Doll and all). Will be good to hear studio versions. But viva la vida and prospekt's march songs overall - every single one of them are worthy. Not sure about these songs and the quality comparison. Still really love Life in technicolor's melody and opening. Such a great tune and instrumentation on that song. Can't wait to hear more, and to finally hear the final studio versions of these songs and the rest of the album. And trust me 1 yr from now, people will realize Every Teardrop is a good song, and will be a hit for sure.

Coldplay End of Decade Clearout Sale (catalogue discussion pg43 onwards, winning item pics pg151 onw

I forgot to save the item on my ebay watch, btw does will anyone have a list of all the items and how much they went for.... just curious on how much people were willing to spend on the items - congrats to all again.

2-Aug-2009: Coldplay Headlining All Points West Music & Arts Festival, New Jersey
Hey all, I'm heading out to the festival tomorrow as well, got a vip tix for cheap luckily, I'll need it as i am currently working ovenight, and will probably sleep until 2 or so and then head out to the festival. I got a roundtrip ferry ticket, as I live in Manhattan, and don't have a car. Does anyone know where exactly the ferry for the festival leaves from? They say battery park pier, but there are a lot of ferries that leave from there. thanks, and looking forward to hearing glass of water, and doubt I'll hear Reign of Love (doh!). Would love to meet up with any other coldplaying members in the vip bleachers... would have done general admission but will be way too exhausted to work my way up to the front thru the day (although I've done it many times for Coachella and V Festival).
