Oldplayers aren't the only Coldplay fans around - I'm sure the band have some newer fans (eg the Twitter ones) who don't get their older music either. Look we're all their fans and will have to share the band and learn to get along (and I suppose appreciate what the band is doing for the rest of their fandom) - we're really like squabbling, bickering kids, and the some Oldplayers seem to want the Band all to themselves - no sharing!

How should they sound like- keeping in mind we have only heard one track from the album so far? They probably have a Ghost Story or All Your Friends or another Oldplay gem sitting around up their sleeve - if not, they will release it in their singles as a B-side anyway... Can't have all your want!

It was not a joke, the whole band played a bloody good version of it, sung by Chris of courses - are they capable of more that that? Of course, but Chris has always seemed to really like a pop tune :rolleyes: Btw, I think at one point at least, they were good buddies (or whatever)

@The Adversary post #77 - I get where you're coming from in terms of Chris' earlier lyrical work... they seemed more heart-felt / gut-wrenching, even sincere I suppose. But well, what type of clever lyrics can be written about gratefulness, and happiness and grooving / moving your feet music? Particularly when the music by the rest of the band is that festive and direct, the lyrics unfortunately have to follow as well... otherwise it would be discordant and not go with the song - As I said earlier, they have put emotion first (in front of lyrics / musical instruments etc) - but they have always done so anyway... they were just previously younger and in a different stage of their lives. In their early years, they were always criticised for not being as talented as Radiohead, compared to Travis (in terms of blandness), and not Oasis / U2 loud or rocky enough... Also as I've previously half-joked, this band's real talent is their versatility - I've often commented jokingly that they make the "best session musicians" out there - listen to all the music they've covered over the years - that should give you an indication that they have a great ability to become the sound of the artist they are performing (think With Or Without You, Bittersweet Symphony, bloody hell even Can't Get You Out of My Head) - by the way that Kylie Minogue song from Glasto (2005 I think) and Chris writing pop songs for Jamelia / other mainstream artists should have given you a hint that he at least had pop leanings... Given the famous closeness of the band and how they get along famously well, their musical philosophy must have room to accommodate that ;) I think that is how we have finally ended up with AOAL - Guy playing funk, Jonny doing dreamy / Indian vibe, not sure about Will, and of course Chris doing classic contemporary pop :laugh3: This is the sound of them putting themselves out there and trying to make it gel!

Unfortunately I think that is their ambition - to keep themselves relevant and to appeal to the masses (the legendary bands as you say)... Look at it this way, the Beatles, Elvis, Michael Jackson, Elton John have all been pretty legendary in their own way - I think no one would dispute that they have been very popular and have had very wide appeal. I think most people can agree that they did do good music, however they all changed with time and I'm sure may have been criticised at the time for their musical output, but over time, their whole catalogue (changes included) have become quite classic - I think we've got to look at Coldplay this way, I mean they have worked and built themselves up into a massive band... Why should they be restricted in the kind of music they produce or play just because they are in a "band"? Their job is to produce music - it must as well be music they like rather than just what we think they should produce. And please don't tell me all "pop" music is shit, the same way that not all rock music is good... Sure a lot of it may be meaningless to some people, but it obviously touches other people, and that's even before we talk about the artistic points (good pop songs do have some level of artistic merit). On that note, I think we might be a bit small-minded ourselves if we think that Coldplay are "above" enjoying / producing a catchy pop song... Chris has always admired contemporary pop tunes eg those from Elton John, A-Ha, etc, etc., just listen to his interviews...

I hope this one has some psychedelia / Sgt Pepper's vibe to it!

Could it be that some fans have finally realised that Coldplay are not that highbrow and are actually a populist band??? :rolleyes: :laugh3: I am sorry if that is the case because they have always wanted to reach out and touch people in an emotional way - in other words, you could call that being populist, not in a valueless lowest common denominator kind of way, but in terms of always putting the emotional message of their music first before any preconceived idea of what they should / could be

I've copied this from the main thread, and I stick to it (with a minor change - I take back the bit about the repeating guitar riff after listening to it full blast on headphones - I think it's powerful enough): This is everybody's best dreams and worst nightmares come true :laugh3: Personally, I like it... although I would have preferred a bit more muscle and "liveness" in the repeated guitar riff throughout the song, rather than a very measured / controlled repeated riff - just my own preference... So it's got EDM, contemporary pop, some 70's disco, some Indian / Oriental themes, and a bit of rock... A bit for everybody :D They have so played us... what are all the lovers / haters gonna say now... Do you love it because it has what you were hoping for, or do you hate it coz it has want you did not want??? Additional notes - I did wonder about Daft Punk, although was hesitant to say much as I do not know their music well... Oldplayers, who want a return to their old sound - think about it, this is the best case scenario for them as people and musicians - it shows they have grown and moved on from their youth, and come to terms with their place in the world, and making an effort (and a choice) to be happy. It is also them being true to themselves. It'd be pretty sad if Chris was still doing melancholic lyrics 20 years down the track, and the whole band still sounded the same ol' disappointed and angry with the state of the world. You would hope a group of successful nearly-40 year olds would have more to sing about and to celebrate in their lives by now. :) Also, what's the point of staying melancholy if they are no longer... ;) This is the sound of them telling us what they love and what they listen to and are influenced by... They have always tried to please. And I think this is the sound of them catering to as many influences as possible - all the motifs are done well, so I think they pull it off. I understand that some people feel it's a confused jumble

LP7- "A Head Full Of Dreams"
You guys have some really interesting perspectives on the album cover... :laugh3: I'm sure the 'simplicity' / rough look of it is entirely intentional - I think it befits a band of Coldplay's age and maturity... They are now looking back and reflecting as well as looking forward, I really like it! :D

===The ultimate Oldplaying Thread===S, BS, TBR, P, AROBTTH, X&Y, VLV, PM===
^Add "Trouble" to that list (of songs of depression / despair)... My personal opinion is that almost all of their songs do reach a certain "standard" musically / production-wise, particularly their early output (maybe except Ode to Deodorant)... The thing I've noticed over time is people have an emotional connection / judge them as good / not so good often based on their own personal development / state of mind - at least up til MX anyway. GS is quite uneven quality-wise in my judgement, but again I may find later on that it's just I have not reached that emotional space yet. The "Oldplay" albums tend to reach out to more depressed states of mind, whereas the "Newplay" ones I think speak to a more upbeat / happy / at peace world view... @I ran away, I sincerely hope your worries resolve themselves and melt away soon... will send happy thoughts your way :) :heart:
