Cross-country running at school could be a form of physical abuse, a textbook for teenagers suggests. A chapter of the book, distributed by Co-ordination Group Publications, says children have the right to protection from physical and emotional abuse. It lists bullying and cross-country runs as possible examples. Margaret Talbot, chief executive of the Association for Physical Education, said this "trivialised" abuse and was based on an "outdated notion" of PE. 'Just sloppy' More than 30,000 copies of the book, designed for 14 to 16-year-olds studying citizenship, have been distributed to schools. The chapter which mentions cross-country running is c…

Oscar-winning actor and comedian Robin Williams is in rehab for alcoholism, his publicist has said. In a statement Mara Buxbaum said Williams had been sober for 20 years, but had "found himself drinking again". He "has decided to take proactive measures to deal with this for his own wellbeing and the wellbeing of his family", Ms Buxbaum said. Williams, 55, won an Oscar for his supporting role in the 1997 film Good Will Hunting. He stars in Man of the Year, due for US release in October, and voices an animated penguin in Happy Feet, set to reach cinemas in November. The low-frequency, seismic rumblings of volcanoes are being transformed into delicate musical scores in an effort to predict when they will erupt. Researchers in Italy have already created a concerto from the underground movements of Mount Etna on Sicily. They are now creating melodies from Ecuador's recently erupted Tungurahua. By correlating the music with precise stages of volcanic activity on both volcanoes the team hope to learn the signature tune of an imminent eruption. "If you can identify the musical patterns that warn of an eruption then you can implement civil protection measures, days or even hours before the event," said Professor Roberto Barb…

Crude oil prices fell nearly $1 a barrel Thursday after thwarted attacks on airplanes led many carriers to cancel flights, and could mean lower demand for jet fuel and dent consumer confidence. Light, sweet crude for September delivery dropped 85 cents to $75.50 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange by midday in Europe. September Brent crude futures on London's ICE Futures fell 98 cents to $76.30 a barrel. "The price fall this morning is on the back of the airline bomb plot which is negative jet demand and consumer confidence," said Olivier Jakob at Petromatrix. Gasoline futures dropped 4 cents to $2.1280 a gallon. Heating oil futu…

Airline and travel shares have fallen across Europe after Scotland Yard said it had disrupted a plot to blow up planes flying between the UK and US. Security at all UK airports has been tightened and flights cancelled, resulting in long delays and fears that the problems will hurt businesses. The FTSE 100 fell more than 1% with shares in British Airways down 5%. Analysts said that the costs to business would depend on how quickly normal services resumed. Shock waves BA said it was too early to estimate the cost of the disruption, adding that it had temporarily halted all short-haul flights to and from Heathrow. Lebanon's coastline could take up to 10 years to recover from a massive oil spill, the nation's environment minister has said. Yacoub Sarraf said it was impossible to tackle the problem while the conflict between Hezbollah and Israel continued. Marine experts have warned the spill could pose a cancer risk to people living in the affected areas. The oil slick caused by Israeli bombing of a power station now covers 120km (75 miles) of the region's coasts. Mr Sarraf said the delay had already severely affected the Lebanese shores. "The damage has been done. It goes without saying that the whole fishing community will be hit for at least two or three years before …

The Deleting Online Predators Act tries to limit the access paedophiles have to the networking sites which have become hugely popular with minors. The act has already been approved by a large majority in the House of Representatives. Critics say the act is too broad and could mean a huge number of websites are cut off from users. Net ban The DOPA Act was introduced into the US legislative system by Congressman Michael Fitzpatrick. It passed 410 votes to 15 in a vote on 26 July. What is Israel supposed to do? How can there be peace when one side's only goal is to completely kill and eliminate the other? how can that side be stopped without a war? Iran and hezbollah's main goal is the destruction of israel and the mass slaughter of the jews, that has been made clear and said by them, so how can you reason with that and solve the crisis without innocent people dying? There is no possible peaceful solution to something like this, not unless Iran and Hezbollah changes their goals, which will never happen. my point is this, when one side will stop at nothing to eliminate the other, force is needed to resolve the conflict.

News Corporation has picked Google for a three-year deal that sees the search giant manage advertising on the media conglomerate’s hugely popular social networking site MySpace. As part of the deal, Google, which beat Yahoo! and Microsoft for the contract, will be able to offer its advertising clients access to one of the internet's biggest audiences. Google is expected to pay at least $900 million (£470 million) to News Corp over the three years of the revenue-sharing deal. MySpace will use Google's technology to allow its users to search the site and the wider web, and Google will match search queries with relevant adverts. Both sides will take a cut of the fee ch…

U2 Tower strikes bad chord with residents A multi-storey tower bearing the name of rock giants U2 has struck a bad chord with some Dublin residents. Householders in Ringsend are complaining that the proposed new tower in the city's docklands will leave them in the shade. The 100 metre tower will exceed the 26 storey 80 metre Obel Tower planned for the Laganside area of Belfast. Situated on the southside of the River Liffey, the 31 floor building will house luxury duplex apartments and U2's new recording studios. Once built, it will be the tallest building in Ireland. Initial plans were for a 60 metre tower, however last month Irish Environment Dick Roche…

Therapist fleeced clients of cash A counsellor who brainwashed an alcoholic client into handing over nearly £250,000 has been told she faces a lengthy jail sentence. Mary McCullagh, who was living in Fordingbridge, Hants, told Nicole Anderson she would return the cash once she inherited a fictitious £9m estate. The therapist also gained the estate agent's sympathy by saying she had MS and was dying of lung cancer. McCullagh, 59, was found guilty of 13 deception charges on Tuesday. The court heard how Miss Anderson had been referred to McCullagh's practice in Bournemouth, Dorset, in 1997. Over a period of three years she sold her stake in the family busin…
