We all know that Landis was found to have a higher-than-normal ratio, 11:1, of testosterone in his urine sample after stage 17, the second to last stage of the Tour. - A small amount of synthetic testosterone was found as well, according to the French lab. - He has now been stripped of his title and fired by his cycling team. - Landis maintains his innocence and does not know what caused his high level of testosterone for that one test. - Landis was tested multiple times throughout the Tour de France leading up to Stage 17, and passed every one. He also passed a test administered after he had won the race. It was one test out of 12 or 13 that showed abnorm…

  3. A few days back there was talk about whether Miss Universe's fainting spell after her coronation wasn't due to a lack of food. Apparently, that speculation isn't that far off the mark, as a model in Uruguay has apparently died on the catwalk after having starved herself for several days: A young Uruguayan model died of heart failure while participating in a fashion show during Fashion Week in Montevideo (Uruguay), according to officials at the hotel where the show was held. 22 year-old Luisel Ramos felt ill after walking the catwalk, fainted on her way to the dressing room and died in spite of the medical attention she received from a mobile hospital unit, s…

Harry Potter author JK Rowling says she will miss writing the series when she finishes work on the final novel. "I will go through a mourning period, then I will have to think of something else to write," the 41-year-old author told an audience in New York. However, she said writing the final book was "fun in a way it hasn't been before" because "the pressure is off". Rowling read extracts from the most recent Potter novel at a charity event organised by author Stephen King. The benefit performance, which also featured World According To Garp novelist John Irving, was held at New York's Radio City Music Hall. Money was being raised for Doctors Without Bo…

  5. Half of U.S. Still Believes Iraq Had WMD Fox News Asks "ARE SADDAM HUSSEIN'S WMDS NOW IN HEZBOLLAH'S HANDS?" CHARLES J. HANLEY / AP | August 6 2006 Do you believe in Iraqi "WMD"? Did Saddam Hussein's government have weapons of mass destruction in 2003? Half of America apparently still thinks so, a new poll finds, and experts see a raft of reasons why: a drumbeat of voices from talk radio to die-hard bloggers to the Oval Office, a surprise headline here or there, a rallying around a partisan flag, and a growing need for people, in their own minds, to justify the war in Iraq. People tend to become "independent of reality" in these circumstances, says opi…

South West 'best' for happiness Middle class people in the South West of England are happiest and those in the South East most miserable, a survey suggests. The YouGov questionnaire asked people if they were "very happy" and only 28% in the South East said yes. In contrast, the South West enjoyed one of the lowest stress figures. Business leaders hope it will encourage more to relocate to Cornwall, which while being apparently happy, is also the poorest county in England. The annual gross domestic product in the region is just 65% of the UK average. HAPPINESS INDEX 1 South West 2 West Midlands 3 East Midlands 4 East of England 5 London 6= North Eas…

The parents of a teenage girl who went missing with her aunt's 18-month-old baby have urged her to tell them they are both safe and well. Ellie Johnson was taken from her home in Fulham, west London, by her 17-year-old cousin Amy Jones during a family visit last Thursday afternoon. Police say they are growing concerned for their safety and are treating the case as suspected abduction. They were last seen at 1700 BST on Monday on King's Street, Hammersmith. In a statement, Amy's parents said: "Amy, we are all very worried for you and Ellie. "We know that you love her and want the best for her. If you can, please contact anyone who can get the message to us…

http://www.time.com/time/magazine/printout/0,8816,1220509,00.html Actually, the Middle East Is Our Crisis Too The war is now part of the global conflict between the U.S. and radical Islam By CHARLES KRAUTHAMMER Something radically new is emerging in the Middle East: the century-old Arab-Israeli dispute has been transmuted from a nationalist to a religious war. And as a result, the Arab-Israeli wars are now merging into the global conflict between radical Islam and the West. The transformation was swift in coming. Hamas' electoral landslide in Palestine just six months ago marked the political death of Yasser Arafat and the secular, vaguely socialist and entirel…

From Radiohead.com "ive had enough of this our government sitting on the fence with the US while world war 3 appears to be breaking out in Lebanon and Northern Israel. we must throw Tony Blair our of office NOW. he does not represent the views of the british people. he does not represent the views of his foreign office and officials. he does not even represent the views of those in his cabinet. he cares far too much about his relationship with Bush, and Murdoch. this man is not fit to be our prime minister. its a nice sunny day. come on lets do it. you know it makes sense. a vote of no confidence. or something. anything.." From much Googling it looks like a big fat no, but I wondered if anyone else knew? When you PAY for a song from iTunes they protect it so you can't use it with any other music player (which is sucky cos I paid for it, it's my song, I should be able to play it wherever I like). But anyway I usually put music on my pod using Realplayer (cos I don't like using itunes), but I can't because of the stupid AAC format. Any ideas how to convert it? I've looked elsewhere but it has been of no use. And before you say 'why don't you just use itunes to put it on your ipod?'. I can't because itunes likes to erase my pod whenever I connect it

Just out of curiosity, does anyone on here follow the tour? I do somewhat- my dad used to race many years ago, so he's still really into cycling. It's turning out to be a strange year. Lance Armstrong has retired and his biggest rivals including Jan Ulrich have been dropped over a drug scandal, so it's anyone's race, really. Even my favorite rider Stewart O'Grady doesn't have much of a chance at the green jersey after he had an accident a few days ago and fractured a vertebrae- ouch!- although he's still riding.

Speed cameras that shame drivers into slowing down rather than fining them may be introduced on English motorways. The cameras record the number plates of speeding drivers and flash them up on a screen but do not issue penalties. They were used during June along a stretch of the M42 in the West Midlands and proved a success with nearly half of speeding drivers slowing down. Now the Highways Agency has said the signs could be extended to other English motorways and major routes. A spokeswoman for the agency said it was the next step on from signs seen in many villages which flash up the speed limit and the words "Slow Down" when drivers are recorded speeding.…

Replica guns 'put lives at risk' The replica gun (right) is nearly identical to semi-automatic (left) Lives are being put at risk by youngsters carrying imitation firearms, police have warned. The warning follows a spate of incidents in recent weeks. In Portsmouth, a police support Officer was shot at with a BB gun and two BB guns confiscated on Thursday looked like genuine weapons, said police. Insp Gerry Kiernan said teenagers needed to realise that by carrying replica weapons they were putting themselves at risk. 'Extremely challenging' Insp Kiernan said: "The problems that these weapons present are numerous. "There is the potential for alar…

We have just got back from holiday. We went to the canary islands where it is cheap for electrical goods. My dad went with the intention of buying a Casio Exlim camera preferebly the latest one. We went to buy one as it worked out at about £116! He was just about to buy the camera when he asked if there was any similar cameras. The guy in the shop gave my dad a 'euro cyber x-3312' made by hitachi. The guy basically wowed my dad saying it has a 3' screen, 12 mega pixel? and 8X digital zoom. I think my dad has been ripped off as he paid 30 euros more. On the camera it says 12 mega pixels but in black it says maximum effective 3.1 megapixel. What does this mean is i…

http://www.factsandlogic.org/ad_96.html Who are the new anti-Semites? The new anti-Semites do not publicly proclaim their desire to bring about a second Holocaust or to subject the Jews to mass murder or annihilation. The hatred is aimed against the state of Israel, which, according to the new anti-Semites, represents all that is evil in the world and which is the main violator of human rights and guilty of virtually every other abuse that can be conceived. This poison is now so widespread that a poll taken in Europe not too long ago found Israel to be the greatest menace to the peace of the world — far ahead of such murderous regimes as those of Iran or of Nort…

Brazilian Cristiano da Matta had surgery to remove a ruptured blood vessel in his head after a collision with a deer during Champ Car testing. The former Toyota F1 driver, 32, is in intensive care after the crash at the Road America track in Wisconsin. Da Matta has 12 Champ Car victories and claimed the series title in 2002. Eye-witness reports suggest he collided with the deer head on, with the animal hitting his head as his car crashed into the barriers at full speed. The deer had run from the woods onto the Elkhart Lake track near turn six, track officials said. Da Matta underwent emergency surgery on Thursday for a subdural hematoma at the Theda Clark…

by Katie Ledger Computer literacy is increasingly seen as an essential skill for children. But what is the best age to introduce them to computers and does it give them a head-start? There are plenty of so-called "kids computers" on the market, aimed primarily at the "three years and over" market. Most of them offer educational games and interaction but no internet connection. The benefit is that they introduce your child to a keyboard and a feeling they have a direct influence over their environment. Every Saturday morning at a north London school, a class meets to hone their computer skills and prepare for upcoming exams. The oldest child is seven yea…

Martin O'Neill is about to be unveiled as Aston Villa's new manager. Villa have called a news conference for 1830 BST on Friday to announce David O'Leary's replacement, and it is widely expected to be O'Neill. BBC Radio Five Live's Pat Murphy reported earlier on Friday that "all things being equal he will be named as manager later today". O'Neill has been out of football since leaving Celtic in 2005 to look after his ill wife, Geraldine. Her health has improved and O'Neill now seems ready to take charge of Villa in time for the club's pre-season tour of Germany and Holland which begins on Saturday. Then, in a picture taken at 10:25am ... 3 hours later .... it shows the same girl being loaded into an ambulance. What does this tell us? The photos were staged. They're propaganda. Who would do such a thin…
