Sex Pistols, The Ramones, The clash are some of my fav bands!

  • 1 year later...

so back on punk... i did more research again... mostly about their way of living, ideas and so on, like it or not are part of History, musically, socially and politically, imo.

any expert about the genre and culture can advice me more bands of the 90's (specially the big ones around 1995) that are punk and not any of their mainstream derivates as punk rock, punk pop and all that specially the modern crap labeled as punk something?

i'm more interested in the ones with more political stuff, or if their subgenres the ones that 'purely' are punk as the harcore and the straight edge, and i don't see clearly what is their relation with ska and emo :|

do they have any relation with reggae and hip hip/rap?

thanks :)

gosh i should had study History of Music or be writing books about it or something

Oh no. Misguided socialists.

I don't like all punk, but I am a huge fan of certain punk artists. So many other bands that I love grew out of or were directly influenced by punk.

i think hate threads on things that do not warrant them are immature and moot.

bye

it's worth noticing that this thread began in 2003 and the original poster has since long gone away.

^ha.

Obviously I did indeed not notice that.

...oy.

so, which bands of this kind do you listen, would recommend?

I can't stand the Sex Pistols music and Jonny Rotten is a complete **** which makes me dislike them even more.

Love The Clash though.

i have to agree so far... yet i don't know why seems sex pistols have more attention as to say, probably cause they partially 'set' the wearing style  (yeah i researched about that aswell).

ok, so researching on the board i listened some bands of this style that Corum mentioned time ago (he was asking for bootlegs) and another that Eric made.

For whatever reason it made me reseach about Ska (surely will be the next style i'll check), since i find some of those early bands very festive and so a bit similar to Reggae (and then i discovered that Ska is like the father of Reggae).

anyways so far i checked:

Sex Pistols, i tried to but had to quit after the second track :| shall be more patient next time.

Dead Kennedys, very festive sound, lyrics i have to check more but don't seem that political to me (as i suppoused the genre was), though i understand why that band apparently got popular among graffiti/(skate) people, at least here.

Lagwagon, sound is fast (what i heard Punk is meant to be), album is listened quick.

Stiff Little Fingers, seems more political but also fast sound and more like garage sound and hard in general.

Buzzcocks, not much to say about them, though i liked.

Just as to when i checked Metal and digged into subgenres as Grind, i had to alternate a couple or 3 albums of the genre and another of more indie, to relax.

Definitelly i think i should had study History of Music or Sociology.

Btw is 'amazing' how some bands are linked in those 'similar artist' option which match so strangely, as from some of them they associated it with Elvis Costello for instance, i don't think he sounds anything as Punk, does he? :uhoh:

Shame that i can't seem to find Minor Threat when i was interested as is said are creators of the 'straight edge' subgenre, and i wanted to check all the main variations it have. (as i always do with any genre i check).

I love the Sex Pistols. Of course Johnny Rotten acts like an asshole. His name is Johnny Rotten! I think he does a lot of it because he craves attention and likes to be sensational. It's no different than being a class clown. Anyone who traffics in shock value will say things to get a rise out of people. It's what they do, but not necessarily who they are or what they believe.

I've met Johnny Rotten on more than one occassion. He was very nice, gracious, and engaging. Like I said, he always likes to act like a comedian, so he was throwing out comments in a small group designed to get a reaction. He seems to feed on that type of attention. However, I find him to be a very observant and witty guy. Not only that, he was at the forefront of two musical shifts - both with the Sex Pistols and PiL. Definetly one of the most important artists is music history, and I almost instantly identify him as the embodiment of punk music.
