Why is this film getting so ridiculously overrated?

I would give it a 7 at most. I enjoyed it and I liked the interesting way the story was told, but it's pretty forgettable

I have to agree. It was so acclaimed, but surprisingly unoriginal. It's basically an indian imitation of over-used hollywood cliche's. I was pretty disappointed.

Last movie I saw was "the kite-runner", which I thought was really great. 8.9/10

The story was quite original if you ask me. How many other films are there about a guy who goes on Millionaire and who can connect every answer to an event from his life? It's so much more than an Indian take on Hollywood cliches (it's actually a British guy who directed it but I know what you mean). Yeah you might have guessed what happens from the very start but the journey to that ending and the charm of the actual story is what makes it so good. Not to mention the terrific acting, the fact that for the feelgood film of the movie it's incredibly heartbreaking and soul-destroying in places and that at the end you don't know whether to laugh, cry, smile, do back flips or scream, "Isn't life great?!" You're more than welcome to dislike it though :P

The Shawshank Redemption

That movie is incredible

agreeed :wacky:

it's cliche in that the ending is all tied up and happy, but it's the structure and writing of the entire film that gets me. i also feel a bit more connected to the movie as a whole because of some personal things, but i thought while the plot of the "long lost love" thing has been overdone, this particular story made it completely original.

the 1968 version of romeo&juliet.

8.5/10.

mercutio and tybalt are so freaking awesome, and romeo is super hot.

Oh no don't get me wrong, I thought the way it connected with Who Wants To Be a Millionaire was really great and original, but it was the only good thing about the film for me. I also don't think it was particularly uplifting, the end credits made me smile, but the ending really did not, I thought it was cheesy and predictable, I wanted him to get hit by a train or something to save it from the fact that you knew how it was gunna end from the first scene.

It is just an alternative take on every film ever made of the same genre, like I said, I really like the storytelling device, but other than that it's very forgettable.

Odd thing about the millionaire bit though is that it didn't have any real purpose in the plot. The phone call was about it, and even that didn't change anything or make a difference in the storyline since he had already talked to her recently. The millionaire game was only ever a device to retell his life. You'd think that there was something vitally important hinging on him winning that game because of the torture scenes at the beginning, but, for all intents and purposes, it didn't change a thing.

I don't think it was a bad movie at all, in fact it's a very good movie in most respects, I just don't think it lived up to the widespread acclaim it got. The previews promised I'd be walking out feeling like a champion. But there was no climax at the end, he just walks out and meets her, and kisses her with the titanic soundtrack running in the background. The millionaire game was unnecessary, even though so much time was devoted to that subplot.

Without the Millionaire bit though it would have just been a bland cheesy predictable movie.

True, and I enjoyed seeing the show, I was just kind of let down that it tied in to the rest of movie in such a minor way.

I've said it before, but I'll say it again, people, calm down with the ratings

9/10 would be the rating I would give to my favourite movie of all time.

Yeah, 10/10 kind of indicates true perfection, which if we're being honest, is never really possible, is it? I'll change my 10 to a 9.

the game plan

(on the bus tv while we were coming here (6 hours in bus).

6/10

it was ok, but as all those kind of movies you can predict the end since the early begin of the film. :uhoh: it was funny in some moments.

Gandhi

Be Kind Rewind

6/10

It was a good film, but I can't remember anything about it :(

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button 8/10

Revolutionary Road 7/10

7 ?????????!!!!!!!! :veryangry2:

I am legend 5/10

it was too slow in my opinion and some parts aren't so real.

Fuera de Carta 8/10

i loved the funny parts and how it was combined with the main drama, the only bad thing is that at times may be it was a bit too vulgar.

I just saw Steamboat Bill Jr.

Such a terrific silent film from 1928! Buster Keaton was amazing at physical comedy, all while showing zero emotion.

7/10, just because the soundtrack I saw it with wasn't great.
