Interesting thing i snooped up on after listening to 'Songs for Silverman', an album by Ben Folds....

On this album written in 2005, contains a special little tribute track to Elliott Smith... The song is appropriately called: 'Late'

Admiring fans of both Ben Folds and Elliott Smith ...Please read the following lyrics...and you will be moved:

Late

Under some dirty words on a dirty wall

Eating takeout by myself

I played the shows

Got back in the van and put the Walkman on

And you were playing

In some other dive a thousand miles away

I played a thousand times before

And like pathetic stars, the truck stops and the rock club walls

I always knew

You saw them too

But you never will again

It's too late

Don't you know

It's been too late

For a long time

Elliott, man, you played a fine guitar

And some dirty basketball

The songs you wrote

Got me through a lot

Just wanna tell you that

But it's too late

It's too late

No, don't you know

it's been too late

for a long time

Oh no

Things were looking up

Least that's what I heard

Oh no

Someone came and washed away your hard-earned

Peace of mind

When desperate static beats the silence up

A quiet truth to calm you down

The songs you wrote

Got me through a lot

Just wanna tell you that

But it's too late

It's too late

No, don't you know

It's been too late

For a long time

It's too late

It's too late

No, don't you know

It's been too late

For a long time

These lryics, along with all that I complied about these two favorite artists lives' ...

I figure they make enough sense to make my eyes tear up a smudge when I hear this song. It's slow tuned too ... a solemn mood.

I suppose Ben Folds must have known Elliott closely...how else would he have known if Elliott played some dirty b-ball? And he spoke of clubs where he played as if Elliott had seen what Ben saw and played there too.

"...Oh no

Things were looking up

Least that's what I heard

Oh no

Someone came and washed away your hard-earned

Peace of mind..."

^^

with Elliott's new album soon to come out shortly before he died, it seems things were going well, but then there was talk of his love affairs (and i don't mean love affairs as in ...love triangles, i mean it as an affair )

and how he was crushed by his own emotions and probably drug abusing too.

well there's so much more too this, but I think I have written entirely too much.

It's just that, I have had that album since it came out and listened to it from time to time, but for some strange reason, it just NOW clicked. As if I had not been paying attention (which i suppose is true)

in any case, I do love the discovery!

Okay okay

Nik here is what I will give you from the albums...which ALL i own :D

Either/Or the title itself is something poetic because it is something used in debates kinda like  to reject a statement...

anyway he used to be in this heavy metal band called: heatmiser...then he quit it (i forget why..but mostly to do his own thing)

and he also did not like that his old band had the DIY (Do It Yourself) because when you do it yourself and don't have additional help you end up settling for second best in producing your album

so he had the idea that DIT (Do It Together) would be much better if it meant making a better album...BUT not letting producers change your style (which Elliott said is a really tough thing to do) OH SO MUCH TO SAY!

So either/or ... he put his first album together basically from scratch and he did vocals and acustics seperatly then spun them together.

by himself.

Alameda is a simple song that I like alot and I wish that the style he used in the first album had stuck on to the next. All of the tracks are raw and simple...but at the same time...elegant because of his voice which seems to just ..be carried amongs his guitar melodies

Angeles is said to be about drugs (and many stupids say that most of his songs are about drugs  when this is not true. ) I dont think Angeles is about that .. I think it's about the whole go-to-California- and-make-it-big mentality. so he used the word Angeles as in Los Angeles, California...and that in Cali, if you were not careful ...you might make bad deals with producers who would suck you in with promises of letting you stay in your musical style but still make mucho money. When in reality, you would let yourself make that decision and lose yourself.

"...so glad to meet you

angeles

picking up the ticket shows there's money to be made

go on and lose the gamble that's the history of the trade

did you add up all the cards left to play to zero

and sign up with evil

angeles..."

and here is the big guys trying to suck you in:

"...i could make you satisfied in everything you do

all your 'secret wishes' could right now be coming true

and be forever with my poison arms around you.."

 angeles is my favorite song  ever

you wanted discussion Nik..so I will GIVE you discussion

next song to anylise ( i will not talk about aaaalll the songs...just a select few)

Between the Bars:

this also is a double meaning title...it can be in between the bars (like drugs...) that feeling of reality when you are NOT on bars..or it could be feeling like you are incarcerated (hence, between the bars). I think it's title means both.... and it is talking about a girl who is fed up of the people she lives around and is willing to let someone fend for her.

"...And I'll make you okay,

And drive them away

The images stuck in your head:

People you've been before

That you don't want around anymore—

That push and shove and won't bend to your will.

I’ll keep them still.

Drink up, baby, look at the stars.

I'll kiss you again

Between the bars,

Where i'm seeing you there,

With your hands in the air,

Waiting to finally be caught...."

Now...Say Yes:

this is one of my favorites as well..because the lyrics are straightforward if you open your heart....

YOu have to have to listen to this song because it's uber sweet! :D

basically, he is in love with a girl whos is still around the morning after...as in..after the sex at night..she is still there...its not a one night stand like any other.

and this couple used to do that (one night stands) but when they broke up..he realized that she was it and that he grew up into a man (man enough for her) ...

and she loves him too because she is still around...

and he wants her to officially say yes... (maybe a proposal)

"i'm in love with the world through the eyes of a girl

who's still around the morning after

we broke up a month ago and i grew up i didn't know

i'd be around the morning after

it's always been wait and see

a happy day and then you pay

and feel like shit the morning after

but now i feel changed around and instead of falling down

i'm standing up the morning after

situations get fucked up and turned around sooner or later

i could be another fool or an exception to the rule

you tell me the morning after

crooked spin can't come to rest

i'm damaged bad at best

she'll decide what she wants

i'll probably be the last to know

no one says until it shows see how it is

they want you or they don't

say yes

i'm in love with the world through the eyes of a girl

who's still around the morning after"

I can discuss more if anyone cares for it...but this is long enough as it is :)
