It was an awesome night, much better than Thursday's show... the power of a sold out crowd. Was front of the crowd and loved it. My mate and I sung out every word, knowing the setlist was no problem. I thought Bob Evans (support) was much better on Fri, he sounded great from up the front. A very enjoyable night, at my favourite venue in Melb!

Oh and the line was crazy long this time, we waited in the dodgy alley around the back. I'm pretty sure they opened doors early at 8:15 rather than 8:30. And thank god for them pulling everything back by 15mins.

Mim, I think I did see you on Thursday night in the crowd, up the front.. your description was familiar. I had a good look from the balcony, but, seriously, nothing beats up the front. Kav's wife/partner was behind us, so he kept looking in our direction the entire night.

Whooop!

Sounds fun, great pictures, glad you had a good time

Here are a few photos I took, out of 100....

I got loads of good ones, ill put them up later

Haha, between my friend and I we managed to take around 150 photos.

She shot most of them though sine she's way taller than me.

lol Grace, I had a feeling it was you from the start. It was purely coincidental that we went that side of the stage, but there were three things that gave it away:

1. When you said you went to coldplay concert

2. When you said this was your second (your sig says it is)

3. and... you like muse (your sig also)

So I was 100% sure chatting to you. Just surprised I wasn't as easy. My sig, comments give away heaps of clues that we chatted about!!!

Friday rocked

So Grace and Tauiwi met. What does the picture with the horses have to do with that? The plot thickens.

I was standing about 8 rows from the front right in front of Kav. So much better than Thursday when it was 3 rows from the front and I got blinded by the lights and had such a sore neck from looking up all the time. Sound was a lot better too. And men look a lot better without noticeable sweat. :wink3:

I agree that Friday was much better than Thursday. The sight of a sold out Palace is fantastic. I had not noticed those tinny little balconies at the top before. Of course lots more fans too. More singing and clapping. Bob Evans band reacted well to that. They sounded a lot more solid. Great guitar solo in their second song, of which I was going to remember the title, and of course forgot.

I loved Kav's partner/wife being there. Besides seeing one of Kav's rare smiles it made the songs so much more poignant. It was funny how he made so many mistakes at the start of Childhood Behaviour; sang out of key, voice choked up, sang the wrong line. Very sweet.

Did you notice the mistake I think Joe made on Thursday in Older Than You? On Friday he did it right and they all started to laugh. Anyone else notice that?

Had a great time. Keep the photo's coming!!!!!!!!

Eskimo detox starting tomorrow.

Alex, in saying I wasn't 100% sure I was about 99.99% sure (here comes the maths again...). As soon as you mentioned that you'd been to Thursday's show, and was up on the balcony, the little lightbulb in my head flicked on. I just didn't want to say anything in case you were like "wtf? " haha. Then when you said you'd been to so many gigs, including Coldplay (like in your sig) and then that you were hanging out for Oasis (in your sig) it pretty much confirmed it for me.

Nice meeting you! :nice:

Haha MimDownUnder, when we were chatting I slipped in that I work at a horse training farm... so that was just his way of saying "I knew it was you, you know."

Anyway, back to Friday night, I think some of the most memorable bits for me were:

- The way Kav kept looking in our direction

- Kav convincing us that we were 'perfect the way we are' even though he's not :P

- The psychadelic drum-solo part in
Losing My Mind
, which was totally EPIC. I got it on video but the sound quality's reallly bad (probably cos we were so close to the speakers)

- And, of course, the encore, especially
Life is Better With You
. The whole thing was just AWESOME.

And of course, the special appearance of Jesus Christ.

I want to go again :laugh3:

lol whoever took them was exactly on the opposite balcony I was on Thurs night!! Thats the same view I got from the front row of the balcony.

Yeah you had your camera out a bit, saw you were taking vids.... so they didnt come out well? I want to put my photos up on the net, but I need time for them to upload. No vids because mine doesnt take great sound.

Here's a review of the gig from fasterlouder.com.au:

Added spoiler in case you are going to future gigs [Min :)]

There is no denying Eskimo Joe’s force in Australian music. With four studio albums (three that have reached platinum), a solid fan base from their humble beginnings of the Sweater EP and enough ARIA and WAMi awards to put most trophy cabinets to shame, Eskimo Joe are one of the most prolific and respected bands to break into the Australia music scene. It’s no wonder that they sell out all their tours so easily. Eskimo Joe’s 4th studio album, Inshalla, is their most ambitious record yet, and a their latest tour in support of the album showcases their new material, whilst still plugging tracks from previous records for the original fans.

In support of his third album release, Goodbye, Bull Creek, Jebediah front man, Kevin Mitchell, performing under his solo name Bob Evans warmed up the eager crowd with his charming and captivating setlist. Performing a mixed bag of old and new content, Evans opened with a track entitled Sadness and Whiskey. Highlights of his setlist included Friend, Someone So Much, Hand Me Downs and the amazing Nowhere Without You. Bob Evans certainly captivated his audience with his diverse set, and certainly made fans out of those who were not familiar with his music. During his set, the crowd seemed to filter in and move right up to the stage to clap, sing and bop along to his catchy and warming songs, definitely a good sign for a support act, even one as well known as Evans.

Forty minutes of dull DJ music passed by and more fans filled the Palace theatre. The lights dimmed to cheers of excitement. A long time wait ended as the show began. Echoing throughout the venue, the thunderous booms of Foreign Land opened the gig, and Kav Temperley, Stuar Macleod and Joel Qaurtermain entered the stage. For an opening song Foreign Land, a song about the late Heath Ledger, could only be described as ‘epic’. The most powerful moment came with the lyric, ‘I smell the blood of an Australian.’ The song was conceived when Kav stepped out into the snow on the night of Ledger’s death, a mere two blocks from where he passed, and thought about the loneliness of Heath, fellow Aussie and Perth hometown boy ‘dying in a foreign land’.

Continuing on the bandwagon of new songs, Inshalla was rolled out mere seconds after Foreign Land. Straying away from the songs of album #4, the boys went back to the days of album #3, and got crowd and fan favourite Sarah out of the way nice and early. After years and years of touring, Eskimo Joe have the art of ‘setlisting’ perfected. By opening with hits early in the show to keep the adrenaline up in the crowd, it allowed the boys to fall back into mellow, deep songs, which they did with the incredible New York and London Bombs.

It was crowd survey time, as Kav took the time to see how many long time fans were in the audience. ‘Raise your hand if you have been a fan since Black Fingernails, Red Wine .’ The majority of the crowd were. ‘Ok, how about A Song Is a City ?’ Numbers dwindled a bit. ‘Ok ok’ laughs Kav, ‘How about Girl ?’ A few long time fans cheer at the front. ‘This one’s for you, we call it Sydney Song’.

Finishing off a series of vintage Sko’ Joe tracks with Pressure, the band moved back to newer territory with the mellow and acoustic Childhood Behaviour. Falling for You (including the extended intro as heard on Inshalla ) and another new track, Losing Friends Over Love. Before moving into the back catalogue of the night, they played Let Me Down with the crowd singing along to every word.

Older Than You from A Song is a City acted as the entree before the epic, breakout Eskimo Joe classic Black Fingernails, Red Wine. It was a moment not to be forgotten.

Departing the stage for a brief hiatus, the boys from Perth returned for encore time, a mini set of A Song Is A City classics. First on the bill was I’m So Tired, but the encore fun really began when for the first time in four years Life Is Better With You was played with some special guests, comprising of Bob Evans band, *Steve Parkin, very special guest and Little Birdy front woman Katy Steele and the one and only ‘dancing Jesus’, who bore a striking resemblance to Bob Evans…

Concluding the night, Eskimo Joe finished their phenomenal set with the crowd pleaser From The Sea. The crowd singing, the night ended on a high, it was impossible not to feel the excitement in the venue. However, Eskimo Joe had one more little surprise hidden up their sleeves (and yes, it could definitely top a dancing Jesus) when Kav, Stu and Joel broke into a simply perfect cover of Icehouse’s hit We Can Get Together. Kav was like a young Iva Davies, his vocals so similar to that of the Aussie legend, as he rip roared through it with perfection.

If anything, the absence of Sound of Your Heart and Comfort You were the only slight disappointments of the setlist, but with such an exceptional number of songs from previous albums, this can be forgiven. With the night ending on a perfect note, the fans exited the venue, and anticipation was already growing for Eskimo Joe’s next Melbourne shows. For an Aussie band whose style seems to adjust slightly with each album, they are one of the most amazing live acts to tour this year. Those with tickets for shows on the rest of the tour take note: You’re in for a wild night of Aussie rock that your will not forget for a very long time.

I feel the same way, Grace. Want another gig but I have nothing next until the Cat Empire in September!

Oh, and the horse pic was genius, wasn't it. Yeah it was kind of awkward-ish (knowing that we both knew who each other was but didnt say) but fun meeting you, Grace. lol you would have melted with kav looking our way heaps

Can't believe you didn't talk about the forum! Anyway thanks for the great video's! I'm going to Bluejuice next week. Something to look forward to.

Yeah I know.. hope you enjoy it!

Here's the band's review (from facebook)

Our second night in Melbourne was one of the best shows of the tour so far. Thanks to the great audience response we received. Its amazing what difference it makes when the crowd is really getting behind you.

It was the second show in the same venue, and whenever that happens it always feels a little more comfortable, just before we walked out on to stage we said to each other we were just going go out and enjoy ourselves and the whole show had a really relaxed feeling because of that. Afterwards we headed across the road to a bar called Society and had some drinks with all our Melbourne friends.

One of the things I really enjoyed about the show is that it was the first time I saw people properly singing along to all the new songs, so thank you very much for that, it made all the new songs feel real for the first time.

Next stop Adelaide.

Kav

Yes, I melted. Completely. Taken breathless. I was convinced he was looking right at me at one point. He wasn't but I felt like he was :P

And I have to admit, I laughed out loud when I saw the horse pic. Good work :D And I didn't feel awkard at all really, just curious lol.

I did take heaps of videos, cos I did that at the Coldplay concert earlier this year (though with a better camera) and they turned out fantastic, so I thought I'd try and do the same. Must have been a bit too loud for my camera's mic though!

Thanks for the review! I can't believe I didn't see that on facebook! It made me feel warm and fuzzy though :P

Edit: Oh and slightly off topic but... I want Hugh Jennings' guitar!! :P

Whoop

Flying to Perth tomorrow... Eskimo Joe on Saturday and Sunday in Fremantle!!!

:escaping:

Ah, nice Min! Enjoy the flight!!

'Enjoy' is probably way too optimistic a word.

It's terribly windy here and it was raining when we landed so it was extremely turbulent to say the least :wreck:

One more sleep till Freo though :D

I'm so jealous of you right now.

I want to see them live so bad!

Reckon they'd do a North American tour soon again?

The gig's tonight  Will be moving from Perth City to Freo later, accommodation's just 5 minutes' walk away from the venue.

Have fun tonight! :)

Amazing, amazing day.

Listened to Eskimo Joe soundcheck Childhood Behaviour and Inshalla, got an autograph and photo from Kav and Joel, almost froze to death in the cold waiting for entry, managed to reach the barrier... And got a nod from Joel who spotted me in the crowd.

Brilliant show, the energy from the band is crazy. And they just seemed so happy to be back home in Freo. Spotted Kav and his kid (wearing big headphones to protect his ears) @ the side of the stage when Bob Evans was on. Also, a guy proposed to his girlfriend onstage with Eskimo Joe, madness!!! But beautiful.

All in all, not a day I'll forget anytime soon.

WOW

that's amazing, I'm pretty jealous right now.

From what you said, it seemed intimate, with the nodding and proposal

It was a pretty small and intimate venue indeed. I hope you get your chance soon!

Photos when I get home, I don't have my camera cable at the moment!

awww shame.

But yes, I will anxiously awaiting!

Yeah the gigs in their hometown were always going to be amazing. Glad you had an awesome time! Great job getting the autographs!!

Min or anyone else ...

Did they also do the cover of 'We Can Get Together' (original by Icehouse)?

I'd so love them to do it when I see them in October ... :)

Yes! They did. I don't want to give too much away, but when I went both nights it was played.
