Britney: 'I'm an emotional wreck but a good mum'

If balancing her eight-month-old baby on her lap while driving was not very bright, Britney Spears has made matters worse in an interview supposed to prove she is a "good mum."

And after receiving a ticking-off from police, you would have thought the singer had learned her lesson.

But in a TV interview, the pop star has sought to justify her behaviour by blaming her rural upbringing.

"I did it with my dad. I'd sit on his lap and I'd drive. We're country," the Louisiana-born singer said.

The 24-year-old was given a dressing-down by the US Department of Children and Family Services after the incident, which happened in February.

Miss Spears, whose hits include Oops, I Did It Again and Baby One More Time, blamed her actions on photographers, saying: "I was terrified they would put us in danger. I instinctively took measures to get my baby and me out of harm's way."

But speaking to American channel NBC, the singer was unrepentant saying: "I can't go anywhere without anyone judging me....I know I'm a good mum."

However motoring organisations have slammed the singer for her lacklustre attitude to safety.

"There are no excuses at all," a spokesman for the AA Motoring Trust said.

"A child should be properly restrained in an appropriate device. Parents should be responsible and realise that the consequences for this sort of behaviour are incredibly dangerous.

"I don't know what happens in some of these rural parts of America, but even in the deepest, remotest parts of Scotland people still don't do this. It's incredibly unsafe."

Despite persistent rumours that her marriage with Kevin Federline is on the rocks, Miss Spears used the interview to insist that she still loves him and that he was "awesome".

"He helps me. He has to. I'm an emotional wreck right now," she said.

She said that constant run-ins with photographers had made her life a misery and that they had "crossed the line a little bit".

"I feel like I'm a target," she said.

It has been a tough two months for the singer whose parenting indiscretions have been widely condemned.

Last month she almost dropped her son on his head after she tripped up in platform shoes in New York.

As the baby fell towards the pavement headfirst, he was caught by a bodyguard, his head jerking violently back and his orange baseball cap falling off.

A week before, the singer found herself in hot water after she was photographed driving with Sean Preston apparently not properly restrained in his car seat.

The boy was also found to have a skull fracture after reportedly falling from a highchair while under a nanny's supervision.

Despite her rocky relationship with Federline, Miss Spears recently announced her second pregnancy. The baby, thought to be a girl, is due in October.

awww poor britters! I think it's awful how the whole world (basically) is calling her a bad parent. She may not go about things (such as the driving with the baby on her lap, because that's just plain unsafe, but she was being pestered by the photographers and had the childs best interests at heart) the right way, but if anything, all this pressure is just going to make her worse.... :( poor britters

I hate people who judge her when they don't know her. Self-righteous people who think they're better than her, who think they know better than her what she's going through.

She's obviously very emotionally fragile but who can blame her.

And I hate people who say "oh well she deserves to be photographed because she's famous blah blah blah"

She had no choice in the matter! She was thrust into singing by a pushy mother, the girl became a mega star at 16! She had people telling her what to ever since. She didn't have a childhood or a chance to grow up properly. So no-one can blame her for finding it difficult to cope with her level of fame. And if they do then they're a cold hearted twat.

She just wants to be left alone...and I think she should be.

And before you say it no I'm not a Britney fan...I just hate the way people are treating her...judging her and her parenting skills. It's disgusting! These people should take a good, hard look at their own life!

How can they judge how someone handles that kind of pressure when they've never, ever been anywhere near that situation.

Some people just piss me off

You know... reading that actually made me feel a little bad for her. I have a feeling things won't end very well.

she has presented herself as trash ever since her first video. she has demonstrated this through her antics IN PUBLIC, ie her clothing selection, grabbing her "husband's" crotch for photographers. she is a terrible example for girls and she has brought this on herself. she knows how the press will react to what she chooses to do. she also is a terrible representation of people in the South. no class, pure trash.

That's this thing called an "image". Don't assume to know Britney beacuse you saw pictures of her and an exagerated story in a tabloid. Celebrities do this kind of stuff all the time to get publicity, after all sex sells. Madonna's been doing it ever since the beginning, and yet oddly I don't see anybody bitching about her.

And when it comes to a celebrity's personal life, it's none of our damn business, just like ours is none of their damn business. I think it's disgusting how people freely gossip about Britney and will even try to justify it, while if people were to gossip about us, we would feel betrayed.

And the worst part was that she was presenting a false image all the time - pretending she was all "sweet and innocent" when it turns out she wasn't.

At least Madonna was pretty much how she put herself across - a bit "tarty".

If Britney's mother was indeed wholly responsible for Britney's "career" she should be ashamed of herself.

However, if Britney had been more honest with the media from the outset, maybe none of this would have happened.
