United moved within touching distance of the title after a comfortable 4-1 win over West Ham at Old Trafford. Chelsea need at least a point against Newcastle to retain any hopes of pipping Sir Alex Ferguson's side to the Premier League title. "The way Chelsea have been talking is that it'll be easy up there - but we know that's not the case," he said. United are three points ahead of Chelsea with a superior goal difference but have played a game more. They face Wigan away on the final day of the season. Chelsea play Newcastle at St James' Park on Monday before playing Bolton at home on 11 May. A win against Wigan next week, or any slip ups by Chelsea in their last two games, will secure a second successive title for Ferguson's side. "We have not won anything yet but we hope we can win the league next week," added Ferguson. "There was a bit of nervousness in our play at times but we killed the game in the second half to continue what has been a fantastic season so far." Ferguson praised Cristiano Ronaldo, whose first-half double took him to 40 for the season and left him just one adrift of Alan Shearer's 31-goal Premier League record. "How many players could score that many?" said the United boss. "He is improving all the time. Plus he has spent 90% of the season on the wing." United had Nani red carded for a headbutt on Hammers defender Lucas Neill but rarely looked like dropping points in their last home game of the season. "It's been a great day for us and we've got a big chance," added Ferguson. "Our players have been absolutely fantastic this season. "We were down to 10 men and I said to try to run the clock down, keep possession and be patient in the second half and I'm very pleased because there was a bit of tiredness." Cristiano Ronaldo scored from 12 yards after three minutes and bundled home his 40th goal of the season from close range in the 24th minute. Carlos Tevez added a brilliant third from 25 yards before Nani was sent off for head-butting Lucas Neill. Dean Ashton pulled one back with an overhead kick, but Michael Carrick drove in a fourth after 58 minutes. The victory means United will retain the title with victory at Wigan next Sunday, thanks to their vastly-superior goal difference compared to rivals Chelsea. United were helped by a desperately listless West Ham side that never gave the slightest hint they would repeat last season's win at Old Trafford that preserved their Premier League status. And any fears boss Sir Alex Ferguson may have had about a hangover following their Champions League semi-final victory against Barcelona on Tuesday were dispelled by a vibrant performance. If United were craving a fast start and an early goal, they could not have wished for more generous defending on the part of West Ham that gave them the lead after three minutes. Ashton injured a muscle in scoring his spectacular goal and it was no surprise when he went off early in the second half, to be replaced by Carlton Cole. West Ham were in no mood to take advantage, however, and desperate defending allowed Carrick to stride forward unopposed to send in a deflected shot from 25 yards for United's fourth after 58 minutes. It was now damage limitation for Alan Curbishley's side and an opportunity for United to improve their goal difference even further. And United substitute Darren Fletcher almost added a fifth with 20 minutes left, only to see his angled drive come back off an upright. May 5, 200818 yr Chelsea victory keeps title hopes alive Ballack set Chelsea on course for their first win at Newcastle since 2001 Goals from Michael Ballack and Florent Malouda handed Chelsea a deserved win against Newcastle and ensured the title race will go down to the final day. Michael Owen had two first-half chances to give Newcastle the lead, while Ballack miscued when through on goal. But Chelsea took control after the break, Ballack nodding in on 61 minutes and Malouda calmly adding a second. The win moved Chelsea level on points with Manchester United, though their goal difference is vastly inferior. United, travel to Wigan on Sunday knowing a victory will see them retain their Premier League crown bar a freak scoreline for Chelsea, while the Blues play Bolton at Stamford Bridge. Blues boss Avram Grant will be buoyed by Wigan's recent run of results - they are unbeaten in five - and the current form of his own team, who have not lost in the league since 16 December. Chelsea arrived at St James' Park fully aware that defeat would effectively end their title hopes but it took them more than half an hour to establish any sort of rhythm and Newcastle will rue their failure to take their chances during that period. Inside five minutes Owen latched onto Nicky Butt's lobbed through-ball but volleyed high over Petr Cech's cross-bar and moments later Habib Beye slithered past Wayne Bridge and into the Chelsea penalty area, only to produce a wayward cross from a dangerous position. The hosts' big opportunity arrived in the 28th minute when Obafemi Martins worked his way into the box and, after the on-rushing Cech foiled Mark Viduka, Owen's follow-up was cleared off the line by a perfectly positioned John Terry.
