Coldplay take more experimental route on new album

Chris Martin: 'We started to use more colours'

Coldplay claim they are taking a less populist approach on their new album.

The band also claim that their upcoming fourth record will spell a new chapter for them.

Guitarist Jonny Buckland said: “We felt like the first three albums were a trilogy and we finished that. So we wanted to do something different.”

Speaking to Rolling Stone, frontman Chris Martin described their new approach.

He said: “Whether or not it’s good, we certainly started to use more colours. It’s impossible to please everybody, and it took us a while to learn that.”

Producer Brian Eno has reportedly improved the band’s working methods, making them take more breaks in recording, for example.

Possible lead single '42' is reportedly a three-part epic complete with strings and beats, while 'Strawberry Swing' is said to incorporate African influences.

The follow-up to 2005's 'X&Y' is due out later this year.

all the articles are starting to come! we're getting close!

OMFG.

Well this article is all I could have hoped for. So much of the stuff they say is EXACTLY the direction i wanted them to go in. I'm not gonna repeat what everyone else has said, but I dont think I've been so excited in my LIFE!

You know, I was a bit doubtful about this album living up to expectations. But now I know this is going to be their masterpiece without a doubt.

Yippie kay yay! I'm sooo happy right now! :)

Cant wait!!

Sounds really promising and exciting!

A.

I CAN'T WAIT

And i'm reallllllllllllllllly glad, that they are re-inventing themselvs.

And a lower voice... GOD this made my day.

:D:D:D

COME ON!!!!!!!!! THIS IS TORTURE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I CAN'T TAKE IT ANYMOOOOOOOOOOORE!!!!!!!!!!! I honestly NEEEEEED to hear something!!!!!!!!!!! Even a very descriptive Prospekt entry would suffice. I think the guys enjoy watching us squirm :) This is like 500 Chris-tmas' (pun intended)!!!!!!!! Come on guys!! Give us SOMETHING!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wooo!

I really hope they give out that track violet hill, I am sure it is a stunning one, and I am completely cool with them giving it away and making more room for another track. I was really curious about a couple of songs they had previously listed for the album tho, titles like "Lost" and "lefrightleftrightleft" (I absolutely loved that title, it immensely intrigued me and looking at all the other titles it would have stood out amongst tracks)

I wouldn't mind if they don't keep their word on making this album short and make it about 70 minutes long instead haha.

I guess there'll b a bunch of extra material, hopefully they bring it to light in time. I mean, the songs are done, why throw them away, I'm sure that they all are great songs.

been away for a while and finally hear some great news!!

can't wait for this new album, and hopefully they release that promotional track after all...I wanna hear some new coldplay!

I still cant wait, each time i hear new news on here i get even more anxious and 1 day becomes a month to me. Oh man release it soon please.

I hope they don't give away Violet Hill and then leave it off the album, I hate non-album tracks! Keep it on there if its that good!

This is great! Finally some real information!

And again more song titels... that gives us about 18 song titles :P

But they might have changed some of the old titels into these new ones...

I also noticed the absence of the exclamation mark, hopefully they drop it with Lost! too...

No More Weepy Radio Ballads? Coldplay Says They're Reinventing Themselves on New Disc

Coldplay will reveal they're all dark and twisty inside on upcoming disc. (WENN)

Earlier this week, there was news that Coldplay was making the final tweaks on their upcoming fourth album, and now the first few wee morsels of intel on the disc have leaked courtesy of Rolling Stone.

According to the music mag, Gwyneth Paltrow's favourite rock stars are tossing out the sound that made them the darlings of rock-radio listeners worldwide for their new album, expected to hit store shelves in May.

"We felt the first three albums were a trilogy, and we finished that," guitarist Johnny Buckland told Rolling Stone. "So we wanted to do something different."

Frontman Chris Martin added his two cents on the re-invention they've been trying to capture in studio since November 2006, saying: "Whether or not it's good, we certainly started to use more colours. It's impossible to please everybody, and it took us a while to learn that."

Tracks from the Brian Eno-produced disc have yet to leak, so time will tell whether the changes are in fact as drastic as the band's quotes might make it seem, but Rolling Stone - who got a sneak preview of nine new songs which may or may not appear on the final cut - describes the band's new direction as having a "rougher" sound, with "distorted guitars" and afro-pop influences. The lyrics take on gloomy subject matter, with the usual themes being "death and loneliness."

Here's the names of the nine recorded tracks that have been revealed so far:

"Violet Hill"

"42" (is being considered for the first single)

"Yes"

"Death and All His Friends"

"Cemetaries of London"

"Life in Technicolor"

"Chinese Sleep Chant"

"Strawberry Swing"

"Reign of Love"

every time i think about this, i get these little excitement tremors. it was happening all last night and now into today!! i wonder if i've ever been this excited for something before...the only other thing(s) that come close are waiting for the harry potter books to come out.

i'm actually kind of glad theyre saying it will be out in may, because i'll be out of school by then and will have all the time in the world to anticipate and then enjoy the album in the first few weeks. if i was still at uni at the time it was going to come out, i wouldnt be able to get much time to really listen to the thing, and i certainly wouldnt be able to freak out about it properly in such a public place :D. i can't wait to be in the privacy of my own home to listen to it!

the description of 'strawberry swing' sounds like that one of glass of water.. african songs...

I'm wondering which previous track was renamed if any was...

Sounds great, I can't wait for this album. :)

I can't wait :bigcry:

and what happened to that song for the escapist?? or is that one "reign of love"?

Hopefully they've been videorecording and documenting their recording process to release like a "special edition" of the album..

My stomach is doing little flips while I think about this.

I'm so nervous.

A good kind of nervous, of course. Ohhhhh!

Coldplay dishes the truth… kind of

Today, Rolling Stone posted quite the elaborate expose on the upcoming LP4 for Britain’s encapsulating act, Coldplay. It’s an impressive track-by-track listing of what one might expect from the band’s long awaited follow up to 2005’s X&Y. There’s even an indication of what might be the new single, where this new sound is coming from, etc.

Several tracks are considerably rougher around the edges, with distorted guitars and more prominent percussion. The lyrics are darker, dealing with recurring themes of death and loneliness. And on several songs, Martin extends his vocal palette considerably beyond the falsetto that has largely defined him, exhibiting a lower, sexier mode that feels more personal and real. “Whether or not it’s good, we certainly started to use more colors,” says Martin. “It’s impossible to please everybody, and it took us a while to learn that. It’s just the freedom to say, ‘Everyone might not like this. We’re into it at the moment, so let’s just get it done.’ “

For an album cloaked in mystery, there sure is a whole lot of information here. Taking into account the hype already behind this album, fans should expect something at the very least, above par. For now, this will have to ease your patience. I still love this video.
