Unstaged show - live build-up

26 October 2011 6:32 pm

We're blogging the pre-show news from tonight's Madrid show

news_line.png

Tonight's American Express UNSTAGED show tonight will be webcast live in countries around the world at http://www.youtube.com/coldplayVEVO. The show starts at 10pm Spanish time / 9pm UK time / 4pm ET / 1pm PT (click here to find out what time that is where you are). This our build-up blog.

10.45pm: Hopefully you're enjoying the show. Those of you in countries who can't see it, don't forget you'll be able to listen to tomorrow night's Norwich show live on BBC Radio 1's website, wherever you are.

Here are a couple of pics from the show...

mad23.jpg

mad24.jpg

mad25.jpg

mad26.jpg

And with that, we'll bid you goodnight (the band are doing a runner to the airport straight after the show). Enjoy the live stream. And we'll see you tomorrow in Norwich...

10.16pm: OK, the show has now begun. It sounds like there were a few load issues with YouTube, which we're told are now sorted. So tune in at http://www.youtube.com/coldplayVEVO now!

We'll leave you with the traditional pre-gig huddle...

mad22.jpg

9.55pm: Final preparations...

mad21.jpg

9.53pm: Here's Will

madwill.jpg

9.30pm: Here's Jonny*

mad19.jpg

* Yes, we do that same joke every live photoblog. Apologies.

9.22pm: Here's Mr Christopher Martin doing keepy ups in the dressing room just now (talking of football, there's talk of several very famous players coming along to the show tonight...)

mad18.jpg

9.11pm: "At what time will the stream on youtube start?" asks Colin to [email protected]. Not sure, actually. The show starts in 49 minutes, but not sure when they'll be turning on the stream. Guess we'll have to wait and see...

9.08pm: And here's a slightly wider shot of Fedde doing his thing (the venue is filling up now).

mad17.jpg

9.05pm: So, 55 minutes until stage time and Fedde Le Grande is warming the crowd up in some style (he was playing Missing by Everything By The Girl when this picture was taken).

mad16.jpg

8.54pm: Natalie has asked how long the band are playing for tonight. Well, we've just a setlist and there are 19 songs on it...

8.48pm: Lots of the Coldplaying massive have been asking for a photo of the band giving them a shout of. And so here is one. Sort of.

mad15.jpg

8.42pm: We spotted some new items on the merch stand - which, we're told, will be going into the Coldplay Online Shop very soon.

mad14.jpg

8.41pm: Update on the band's whereabouts. Will is playing a football game on his phone. The others are not in the dressing room. Here endeth the update on the band's whereabouts. (Sorry.)

8.37pm: Take all this in and you'll be fine...

mad13.jpg

8.36pm: Apologies for the delay - we got a new blog from Roadie #42 - so we obviously had to post it.

8.14pm: Just been for a little wander outside the venue. It's a stunning old building.

mad12.jpg

7.52pm: There is a cricket bat in the band's dressing room. We haven't seen anyone playing with it, but it's nice that it's there.

mad11.jpg

7.43pm: A few of you have been emailing [email protected] from countries which won't be able to watch tonight's show online. We are genuinely sorry about that - it's not something in our control. But you will all be able to listen to tomorrow night's Norwich show live on BBC Radio 1's website, wherever you are.

7.39pm: Two of Mylo Xyloto's three producers in one picture - it's Dan Green and Rik Simpson! (Don't think the third, Markus Dravs, is coming tonight. He'll be watching online. Probably.)

mad10.jpg

7.38pm: Lots of you asking [email protected] what the band are up to at the moment. Last we saw, they were just chilling in the dressing (it's been a very busy few days/weeks).

7.35pm: And we're back. Here's what was on the menu:

mad9.jpg

We had the soup (warming) and the pork (tasty). The "eggs in green sauce" seemed to be going down well with others.

7.05pm: Right. Meal voucher has just arrived. Off to grab something to eat (taking camera...). Back soon.

7.03pm: Leticia has emailed [email protected] to ask how many people Coldplay will be performing in front of tonight. We're told 16,000 are expected (and that came from The Oracle, so it must be true).

7.00pm: Here's the view Chris will have tonight (well, it'll a bit darker - as the sun sets in 21 minutes, according to a sign on the wall in the office we're in).

mad7.jpg

6.58pm: And the first person with the correct answer (which was, amazingly, Hurts Like Heaven) was Laurie Maine. Well done Laurie! :-)

6.47pm: QUIZ: email [email protected] if you can guess which song this will be used on tonight...

mad6.jpg

6.41pm: A sign which confused us considerably earlier (which way? How about an arrow?)

mad5.jpg

6.38pm: Here's Coldplay's soundman (and Mylo Xyloto co-producer) Dan Green during the rehearsals.

mad4.jpg

6.31pm: And here's a photo of the band during rehearsals. As you might gather from their attire, it is *properly* chilly in Madrid today.

mad3.jpg

6.24pm: Phil Harvey - Coldplay's fifth member, and the subject of some kind words from the band in today's press conference - has just sent us this photo of Anton Corbijn directing the rehearsals for tonight's show, which have just been taking place.

photo.JPG

6.18pm: After the press conference, the band were presented with gold discs for Mylo Xyloto by the Spanish label (which is pretty impressive given that it only came out this week). They've certainly set a high bar for the label in other countries to follow with the quality of their presentation - the spray can is a particularly nice touch.

mad2.jpg

6.16pm: Having arrived from the UK this morning, the band went straight to a hotel in Madrid, where they held a press conference for the world's media. It looked a little like this...

mad1.jpg

6.12pm: We'll only be blogging until the show starts, by the way. As then you'll be able to watch it online. But that still gives us almost four hours of live photoblog fun. If you'd like to say hello, we're on [email protected].

6.09pm: Hello! You join us backstage at Plaza de Toros de Las Ventas in Madrid, where Coldplay's American Express UNSTAGED show tonight will be webcast in countries around the world at http://www.youtube.com/coldplayVEVO. The show starts at 10pm Spanish time / 9pm UK time / 4pm ET / 1pm PT (click here to find out what time that is where you are). It will also be available to watch live on mobile devices via VEVO and YouTube apps for iPhone, iPod touch, iPad and Android. And if you're in New York, you can watch it on big screens in Times Square.

The Unstaged show be available to watch in the following countries: Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Czech Republic, France, Hong Kong, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Korean Republic, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Poland, Russian Federation, South Africa, Spain, Taiwan, United Kingdom and United States. (Apologies to those of you in other countries, there will be other big events which you'll be able to watch soon.)

I LOVE the photoblogs yay ::dazzled::

Roadie #42 - Blog #152

26 October 2011 7:20 pm

#42 catches up on the whirlwind that has been the last seven days

news_line.png

So there we are - the record is finally out there.

For me, it mainly means I can stop worrying about having the files on my laptop. For others hopefully, it means being overjoyed that they finally have them on theirs.

It also means that (praise the lord) the pre-release-promo phase is coming to a close. It’s been a white knuckle ride for all concerned and not a little exhausting. I’m constantly amazed by the way that the band can not only function throughout this schedule, but actually be cheery and engaging with the relentless round of interviews that they get on top of what we’re dealing with.

The schedule was shuffled crazily at the last moment last week to accommodate the Steve Jobs memorial ceremony at Apple Headquarters. We of course, were very much on the periphery of it. The event and those that were gathered were literally at the very heart of the Apple organisation. The love, respect and sense of loss clearly palpable in the stillness and quiet.

The speeches were both moving and at times very very funny. (Jony Ives: “we worked together for fifteen years and he still laughed at the way I said Aluminium”). In the midst of a corporate campus so dedicated to the cutting edge of technology, it was a deeply emotional human experience.

20111026A.jpg

By the time we reached New York for the Colbert Report and the Today show, the fatigue was running full tilt. Good performances from what I recall, but I have to admit to recalling little else…

20111026B.jpg

20111026C.jpg

20111026D.jpg

Coldplay have played the Jools Holland show at BBC TV centre several times now. It always feels very comfortable and familiar. There’s the inevitable nerve-jangle of live telly, but it’s more than made up for by the chance to stand twenty foot from The Waterboys as they do their thing.

20111026E.jpg

There’s a performance of another kind going on in Madrid. The album-launch show is to be webcast live, so there is a complete run through being undertaken to a tape of the stadium show in Johannesburg. The web-stream is being tested, so the band stand huddled around a laptop in the TV studio in London, as hundreds of miles away, four bored looking crew stand on the stage pretending to be them for the cameras - completely unaware that their doppelgang-ees are looking in, grinning.

I’ve a feeling that tonight’s version may be somewhat more dynamic. Well, you can see for yourselves, I guess...

Norwich R1 show - live photoblog

27 October 2011 3:47 pm

Join us live backstage from tonight's Radio 1 show

news_line.png

On Thursday 27th, Coldplay played a special live show for BBC Radio 1 at the University of East Anglia in Norwich. Our live blog is below. You can listen to the show on-demand on Radio 1's website by clicking here (UK) or here (rest of the world - skip to 1 hr) until 3rd November.

21.35: So, here are some pictures from after the last song of the main set. Hope you enjoyed it wherever you were listening. The band actually came back on to do an encore of Green Eyes, Shiver and Us Against The World - which was a real treat for those in the audience (and what an audience they were). And with that, folks, goodnight. Hope you enjoyed the blog, and thanks for all your emails. Anchorman

anof5.jpg

anof4.jpg

The elephant made an appearance too...

anof1.jpg

21.30: Right, we're in a people carrier on the way to London. Pictures coming...

20.48: We've got to go and ready to jump in the car back to London. Will try to post some more pictures once we're on the move (the joys of mobile broadband...)

20.43: Chris and Will during Up In Flames.

anno1.jpg

And, to give you an idea of how intimate this venue really is...

anno2.jpg

20.34: And here's Dan doing his soundman thing (this one is "arty" too)

aaano3.jpg

20.32: "Hi Anchorman! Do you know how long the concert is going to be this time?" asks Yasmin. Tonight's live broadcast is an hour. Which means we're just past halfway already...

20.32: Live photoblog rule #276: any bad/blurred/out-of-focus/overly dark live pictures are not bad, they're "arty".

aaano2.jpg

20.28: This is how it's looking from where soundman Dan Green is. As you can probably gather from the radio broadcast (link above) there's a pretty amazing atmosphere down there.

aaano1.jpg

20.20: "Just having brekky in Australia, listening to the boys live in Norwich, where I come from...sounding great!" says Jon to [email protected]. Ah, the wonders of technology...

20.15: Some pictures from the show so far (this was during Yellow)...

aano2.jpg

aano1.jpg

aano3.jpg

aano4.jpg

aano5.jpg

20.02: A final huddle in the corridor and they're on! Listen live right now by clicking here

anor6.jpg

19.52: Will reminds Phil of that time he danced at a disco in Exeter (it's a long story...)

anor5.jpg

19.48: 11 minutes until stage time...

anor4.jpg

19.38: Fearne Cotton and Greg James have popped in to say hello. It's Radio 1 DJ central in these parts today.

19.35: Will, Jonny and Guy are busy doing their vocal warm-ups (which essentially involve going "Weeee-eeeee-eeeeee" and "Ahhhhhh-ahhhhhh-ahhhhhh" and the like). Here's an action shot of Jonny mid-flow...

ano3.jpg

19.25: It's Mylo Xyloto co-producers Dan Green and Rik Simpson!

anor2.jpg

Was it really only last night we were in Madrid with them? Feels like ages ago.

19.15: Are you folks all listening online then? Presumably you are? Does it sound good? Here's a picture of Zane Lowe doing his DJ thing...

anor1.jpg

19.06: Quite a few of you have been emailing [email protected] asking for a picture of Guy. Here he is, strumming on a mandolin just now....

nor15.jpg

18.52: Here's another shot from today's dressing room football match...

nor14.jpg

18.51: Sorry for the gap in photoblog service. We went to grab some dinner. But we are BACK.

18.10: Radio 1 DJ Zane Lowe is here for an interview now. They're talking about the time that Will threw a drumstick at him. Listen out on Radio 1 tonight for the interview before the show.

18.05: Doors are about to open, and you can hear the fans outside singing the Viva chant already. Feels like it's going to be a good night.

17.58: We just had an impromptu game of dressing room football: Jonny and Phil vs Chris and Anchorman. The goal posts were a chair at either end - you had to get the ball between the legs of the chair to score, which was decidedly tricky. It was a titanic struggle, which ended 1-1 (when some more journalists arrived for an interview).

nor13.jpg

17.41: Here's some photos from last night which we didn't get a chance to post. A little pre-show cricket. This was literally less than 10 minutes before the band went on stage...

nor11.jpg

nor12.jpg

Jonny would like to make it clear that Will was being bowled LBW in this shot (by Jonny).

17.37: Chris is in the dressing room, having some dinner and doing an interview with some student journalists from the university which houses tonight's venue. They're asking some good questions, too. He's currently explaining to them why Coldplay love Glastonbury Festival so much ("It's all the positive things of life").

nor10.jpg

17.30: Coldplay's radio plugger Kev doesn't always dress like this...

nor9.jpg

17.19: Thanks to Darren who's just emailed [email protected] with a link to this amazing picture of five Coldplay fans in the queue outside, dressed as elephants. Amazing effort!

17.10: Here's another couple of photos from the Live Lounge performance - where Coldplay played Hurts Like Heaven, a terrific cover of Rihanna's We Found Love and Paradise. You can listen on-demand to all that at Radio 1's website by clicking here - just after 2 hours in.

nor7.jpg

nor6.jpg

17.00 Exactly three hours until stage time. And here's a photo of Chris chatting to Radio 1 DJ Fearne Cotton at the Live Lounge recording in a UEA student bar earlier. There are more photos from that available at Radio 1's site here.

nor5.jpg

16.57: Those who have gone before...

nor4.jpg

16.55: And here's the setlist from that night in January 2000 - according to Songkick:

1. Don't Panic

2. Shiver

3. Spies

4. Sparks

5. Yellow

6. Trouble

7. Parachutes

8. High Speed

9. We Never Change

10. Everything's Not Lost

11. Help Is Around The Corner

12. Bigger Stronger (Encore)

16:52: Here's tonight's dressing room - which, according to the band, is the very same room they had as their dressing room (sharing with Campag Velocet) when they played the UEA on 29 January 2000 as part of the NME tour, which they opened.

nor3.jpg

16.50: Sorry, that journey took a little longer than expected (seems we hit Norwich rush hour), so the band went straight into soundcheck. Here's a photo - taken almost from the back of the UEA, which gives you an idea of how big it is (1,500 capacity).

nor2.jpg

15:50: Off to the venue now (we had a few hours in a hotel) - lots more pics when we get there. Until then, catch up on last night's show here.

15:43: Hello! Yes, we begin a second day of live photoblogging, ahead of Coldplay's show in Norwich tonight. We'll start with a picture taken at last night's in Madrid which we didn't post yet. This shows the band coming off stage after Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall provided a mighty climax to a thrilling show.

You can see me in this picture from Paradise. Look over Will's left shoulder, and I am the blur in front of that white wall piece. I was next to the cameraman the whole time so I wasn't in any of his shots. So amazing to have been there.

^^^Dianne, I could see the back of your head a bunch of times from the other angle:D

Coldplay is on Ellen again tomorrow. Saw it advertised today. I suspect it is the unaired songs from last visit...MAybe some other taped messages with the band we haven't seen yet too???

Good evening. Lots of you have been asking for the official Mylo Xyloto lyrics. So, here are the lyrics for all the songs on Side A. We'll post Side B soon.

HURTS LIKE HEAVEN

Written in graffiti on a bridge in a park

‘Do you ever get the feeling that you’re missing the mark?’

It's so cold it's so cold

It's so cold it's so cold

Written up in marker on a factory sign

‘I struggle with the feeling that my life isn’t mine’

It's so cold it's so cold

It's so cold it's so cold

See the arrow they shot

Trying to tear us apart

Take the fire from my belly and the beat from my heart

Still I won’t let go

Still I won’t let go

Of you- ooh ooh

Cos you do

You use your heart as a weapon

And it hurts like heaven

On every street every car every surface a name

Tonight the streets are ours

And we’re writing and saying

Don’t let em take control

No we won’t let em take control

Yes I feel a little bit nervous

Yes I feel nervous and I cannot relax

How come they’re out to get us

How come they’re out when they don’t know the facts

So on a concrete canvas under cover of dark

On a concrete canvas I’ll go making my mark

Armed with a spraycan soul

I’ll be armed with a spraycan soul

And you ooh ooh

You ooh ooh

Cos you use your heart as a weapon

And it hurts like heaven

Woah oh oh oh, woah oh oh oh

Yeah it’s true

When you

Use your heart as a weapon

Then it hurts like heaven

And it hurts like heaven

Oh oh oh-oh

And it hurts like heaven

Oh oh oh oh oh oh oh

PARADISE

When she was just a girl

She expected the world

But it flew away from her reach so

She ran away in her sleep

And dreamed of

Para-para-paradise, Para-para-paradise, Para-para-paradise

Every time she closed her eyes

When she was just a girl

She expected the world

But it flew away from her reach

And the bullets catch in her teeth

Life goes on, it gets so heavy

The wheel breaks the butterfly

Every tear a waterfall

In the night the stormy night she'll close her eyes

In the night the stormy night away she'd fly

And dreams of

Para-para-paradise

Para-para-paradise

Para-para-paradise

Oh oh oh oh oh oh-oh-oh

She'd dream of

Para-para-paradise

Para-para-paradise

Para-para-paradise

Oh oh oh oh oh oh-oh-oh-oh

Lalalalalalalalalalala

And so lying underneath those stormy skies

She'd say, "oh, ohohohoh I know the sun must set to rise"

This could be

Para-para-paradise

Para-para-paradise

Para-para-paradise

Oh oh oh oh oh oh-oh-oh

This could be

Para-para-paradise

Para-para-paradise

This could be

Para-para-paradise

Oh oh oh oh oh oh-oh-oh-oh

CHARLIE BROWN

Wooh, ooh ooh ooh

Stole a key

Took a car downtown where the lost boys meet

Took a car downtown and took what they offered me

To set me free

I saw the lights go down at the end of the scene

Saw the lights go down and standing in front of me

Poh ooh ooh

In my scarecrow dreams

When they smash my heart into smithereens

Be a bright red rose come bursting through concrete

And a cartoon heart

Light a fire a fire a spark

Light a fire a flame in my heart

We’ll run wild

We’ll be glowing in the dark

Oooh ooh ooh

We’ll be glowing in the dark

A-woo-a-wooooo

All the boys, all the girls, all that matters in the world

All the boys, all the girls, all the madness that occurs

All the highs all the lows, as the room a-spinning goes

We’ll run riot, we’ll be glowing in the dark

Ooooh, ooooh, ooooh

So we’ll soar

Luminous and wired

We’ll be glowing in the dark

-----------------------

US AGAINST THE WORLD

Oh morning come bursting the clouds amen

Lift off this blindfold let me see again

Bring back the water let your ships roll in

In my heart she left a hole

The tightrope that I’m walking just sways and ties

The devil as he’s talking to those angel’s eyes

And I just want to be there when the lightening strikes

And the saints go marching in

And sing

Slow it down

Through chaos as it swirls

It's us against the world

Like a river to a raindrop I lost a friend

My drunken hazard daniel in a lion's den

And tonight I know it all has to begin again

So whatever you do, don’t let go

If we could float away

Fly up to the surface and just start again

Lift off before trouble just erodes us in the rain

Just erodes us in the rain

Just erodes us and see roses in the rain saying

Slow it down

Through chaos as it swirls

It's us against the world

Through chaos as it swirls

It's us against the world

-----------------------

EVERY TEARDROP IS A WATERFALL

I turn the music up, I got my records on

I shut the world outside until the lights come on

Maybe the streets alight, maybe the trees are gone

I feel my heart start beating to my favourite song

And all the kids they dance, all the kids all night

Until Monday morning feels another life

I turn the music up

I'm on a roll this time

And heaven is in sight

I turn the music up, I got my records on

From underneath the rubble sing a rebel song

Don't want to see another generation drop

I'd rather be a comma than a full stop

Maybe I'm in the black, maybe I'm on my knees

Maybe I'm in the gap between the two trapezes

But my heart is beating and my pulses start

Cathedrals in my heart

And we saw oh this light I swear you, emerge blinking into

To tell me it's alright

As we soar walls, every siren is a symphony

And every tear's a waterfall

Is a waterfall

Oh

Is a waterfall

Oh oh oh

Is a is a waterfall

Every tear

Is a waterfall

Oh oh oh

So you can hurt, hurt me bad

But still I'll raise the flag

Oh

It was a wa wa wa wa wa-aterfall

A wa wa wa wa wa-aterfall

Every tear

Every tear

Every teardrop is a waterfall

Every tear

Every tear

Every teardrop is a waterfall
