I caved and listened to the sampler! Figured it's not the whole song plus I've heard most of Side A live anyway! I think that satiated me for me!

Sooooo excited to see the SNL performance!

Coldplay on SNL. Love that, can't wait!

I'm excited to see them on SNL, however I've been disappointed overall with SNL performances lately (this season and last season, at least). Not anything on the artsists' end, there's just something biffed with the sound quality on the broadcast. It's like the lead vocal mic is turned up way too high so it's not balanced with the music at all. It's comparable to singing/breathing with a little music in the background, if that makes any sense. Watch last season's Lady Gaga performance and you'll see what I mean. The mic is up so loud you can hear her breathing/panting more than the music almost.

#42 and the tiny show in the tiny venue with the tiny doors

news_line.png

Neill Lambert (my keyboard-world partner in crime) has just been on stage to check the piano before the KROQ webcast begins. Before he’s even got back to our rig at stage left, Anchorman (my website co-conspirator) has emailed me a screen-grab...

20111019A.jpg

I point at the image on the laptop when Neill returns, telling him he’s just been live on the internet. His reply neatly sums up the timezone roulette we’re all living right now.

“Well at least I’m live somewhere…”

I’ve always tried to steer away from discussing jetlag in these musings, on the grounds that it could be construed as trying to make myself sound windswept and interesting by just complaining that I’m a bit tired.

Realistically, though, it’s pretty much unavoidable, given that I’m documenting the touring experience. But it’s working in a somewhat interesting manner at the moment. We’re in LA, which is 8 hours behind our beds at home. Usefully, though, a lot of the TV shows we have here mean early starts.

Initially, looking at the schedule and seeing 5.30am lobby calls was a little shocking. However, jetlag here means that we’re all waking up at four anyway - so maybe two wrongs really do make a right?

20111019B.jpg

(Guy with Coldplay manager Dave Holmes - early risers, both)

Today’s show is a radio thing for KROQ, who have been behind Coldplay here in the states since the very word go. The band are playing in a tiny black box room with a crowd that Chris points out is smaller than at their first ever show.

The building is so small in fact, that production manager Wob Roberts informs me that the only way to get most of the gear into the building was to take the single back door of its hinges. As for the Viva Tympani - forget it…

Yellow blasts the tiny space rather wonderfully and they’re off. It’s six songs over the course of two hours, but even so we’re done by 10am.

It’s difficult to know what the best strategy for the jetlag is. If we adjust to west coast time, that’ll wreck us when we leave for the east coast in a day or two - and by the weekend, we’re back in the UK and need to be alert and on the ball during daylight hours.

I’ve decided to follow my standard policy of simply feeling knackered, dazed and confused all the time regardless of what time of day it is.

It’s got me this far…

I can't imagine how exhausting it must be for everyone working over there. Once there was a time when I slept like 4 hours a day, and this went for a few weeks. I felt like utter crap. But the roadies and everyone else there has to do so much more physical hard work with moving all the gear and stuff, it must be shattering. Poor folks :(

Final allocation of Norwich tickets on sale now

20 October 2011 1:10 pm

Coldplay.com readers can buy the final tickets for the UEA show online

news_line.png

Good afternoon. As previously announced, Coldplay will play a special show at Norwich's University of East Anglia on Thursday, 27 October, as part of BBC Radio 1's Student Tour.

Tickets, priced £20, were sold at the UEA box office to personal callers on Saturday, 15 October (after fans queued over night).

However, a final 100 tickets to the show have just been released for sale - and Coldplay.com readers can buy them online from here now. (We wanted them to go to you folks - but you'd best be quick if you want some.)

If you can't make it, the gig will also broadcast live on BBC Radio 1 (listen live on your radio in the UK, or online anywhere in the world).

Tickets are limited to two per customer. To avoid these tickets being resold at inflated prices entry for these shows will be via wristband only. On the show day, 27 October, wristbanding will open at midday at the venue. Ticket buyers will need to go to the box office with their ticket receipt, photo ID matching the name on the receipt and if they have purchased two tickets their guest must be in attendance with them. Each customer will be wristbanded and can then return to the venue in the evening for the concert. Doors open at 6.30 pm and the show starts promptly at 7.00 p.m. so please arrive early. Please note that any wristbands that have been obviously tampered with will be refused entry.

He didn't even mention having to load out from the Ellen Show at 5pm the night before the KROQ show. Ellen ended about 5pm, and they had to be totally off her stage before 6pm, when her next show was being taped. Then they had to drive the 20 miles or so to KROQ, in rush hour Los Angeles traffic. I was talking with some of the KROQ folks and they said the roadies were there very late setting up and then back again at 6am for the 7:30am broadcast. Will played his bass drum instead of the Viva tympani at both shows, and I noticed for the first time at KROQ that the Viva bell now has MX painted on it - don't know how I missed that before.
