Good morning. We're pleased to report that Coldplay have been nominated for three awards at the 54th Grammy Awards. The band are up for:

- Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for Paradise

- Best Rock Performance for Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall

- Best Rock Song for Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall

The ceremony will take place in Los Angeles on Sunday 12 February. (Mylo Xyloto was not eligible for any awards, as it was released after the cut-off date of 30 September 2011.)

#42 gives us the inside line on rehearsals for the arena tour

news_line.png

I’m sitting in the lounge waiting for the flight up to Glasgow. I suppose technically, tonight is the first proper show of the Mylo Xylotour. It’s not surprising really that it doesn’t feel like it. The Rock Im Park festival was the first gig show we did with these songs. That was on June 3rd - exactly six months ago to the day, come to think of it. I’ve worked for bands whose entire album campaign lasted less than six months and that was our round of promo to warm up and get us underway...

So when we got into production rehearsals this week, it was a slightly different experience than previous times. Production rehearsals are usually a rather fraught affair. There is usually the stress of an album launch hanging over everything and an entire album’s worth of new songs to learn.

In fact, it’s bizarrely the reverse this time. The new songs are down (apart from a couple of additions). It’s the old ones that they’ve decided to bring out of mothballs that are causing the trouble. Chris turns to his microphone during one run through and advises nobody in particular “If you want to get a video of us completely fucking up a song we haven’t played for ten years, then get your phone out now”.

10111203A.jpg

I think better of it, partly as it would hardly be fair to film it - and more so because I’m buried in keyboard programming. It’s not just them who haven’t been near this song in ten years…

I’ve written at length before about how Will gets a rum deal in reporting sometimes. He’s often painted as a stern “no man”. Someone slightly scary, who constantly exercises his veto on proceedings. In situations like this though, he shows his true role as the rock. When the band all disappear off into slightly different versions of the old song, it’s him they turn to (quite literally) because he will always be the one mouthing the words and counting the time into the chorus. He is the memory bank, the metronome and the collective safety harness.

10111203B.jpg

The setlist gets thrown into the blender most days. It’s hard to keep up, as everything is completely fluid - things change from moment to moment. This is as it should be, of course. There’s only a few days to overhaul and retool before taking it out into the world once again.

One thing I couldn’t help but notice, though, is the most major difference between this and previous production rehearsals: it seems to mostly be about the audience this time. When a song stops and changes are discussed, it’s not in order to throw more impressive technology, staging or effects at things. The comments from the stage are all about the folks who will out there up in the seats.

“Hmmmn, if we put that there when we’re down here, what’s the view going to be like over there?”

“Actually, in this bit of the song, it needs to feel more human, lets turn off all of this, this and this and just let it be about them."

Normally, we’d be throwing everything *including* the kitchen sink at the setlist at this point. One is reminded of a famous quote (amongst the roadie world, anyway) from a seventies megastar frontman in a production meeting. He simply waved his hand and said, “Just blind them and deafen them for the first 5 minutes and after that, they’re all mine dahhhhling.”

Perhaps it’s the confidence gained from the solid shows already behind us, or the fact that there’s no anxiety about whether the record is going to do OK out there in the world. Either way, there’s a beautiful show here that’s wrapped entirely around the songs and the audience.

Of course tonight in Glasgow could still be a train-wreck, but more than worrying about it, I’m actually looking forward to seeing how it all turns out.

I wonder what is the song that they've not played for 10 years :wacky:

Can't wait to see the setlist!

^^ Me too! When I read it I was like: "WHAT ?! WHICH SONG WHICH SONG WHICH SONG ???!!!IS IT ONE I PARTICULARLY LOVE ? WHICH ONE IS IT FOR GOD'S SAKE!"

Hm. I think I get a little too excited sometimes...

I wonder what is the song that they've not played for 10 years :wacky:

Same here! :bomb:

^^ I also made kind of a weird excited noise when I read that.

(But I don't want to know what song it is for the next two weeks.)

One that has keyboards and guitars on it...but let's say that it maybe wasn't part of the original arrangement; the only possible songs are:

Spies, Sparks, High Speed and We Never Change!

Other songs have been played in recent years...

Glowbands in Glasgow

4 December 2011 3:07 pm

Check out a great video shot during Charlie Brown

news_line.png

Good afternoon. On the December arena tour, the audience will be given some extremely clever radio-controlled glowbands. As you'll see below, they were looking pretty booming great during Charlie Brown on the opening night in Glasgow...

Big thanks to Andy Bramley and the XL crew for the footage, and to Roadie #42 for putting the video together.

Same here! :bomb:

When was the last time they played Amsterdam? Earlier this year Phil said it would likely return to the setlist.

(I realize that's not quite 10 years but it could have been an approximate/figurative time reference.)

Although I can picture some really awesome alternate version of Spies.

I have read somewhere that they played DAYLIGHT? Was that the song?

i hope they play spies

Emeli Sande interview

5 December 2011 12:17 pm

We caught up with Coldplay's latest support act

news_line.png

Good morning. On the December arena tour, fast-rising Scottish singer Emeli Sandé is opening at Coldplay's shows in Glasgow, London, Paris, Cologne, Rotterdam, Antwerp, Frankfurt and Berlin - as well as the Under 1 Roof show at The O2 in London on 10 December (click for tickets). We gave Emeli a shout to find out a bit more about her...

edp4776-010-MF.jpg

Hi Emeli, how are you?

I’m very well, thank you.

Are you looking forward to your tour with Coldplay over the next few weeks?

Yes, I’m really excited about it.

Have you done a tour of this kind of size before?

No, nothing like this. I’ve only really done intimate shows, and just finished my first headline tour. But this is the first one that’s this big.

Do you know how the band came to pick you to do this tour?

I’m not sure. I did a cover of Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall and I know they saw that, so maybe that was the introduction to what I do. And I know they spoke to Miles at the label and he played them some stuff. But I was over the moon when I found out.

You said yes straight away?

Oh, absolutely. That was a big definite yes.

Have you played support shows before?

I’ve done a few, yeah. I supported Alicia Keys when she played in London at the Royal Albert Hall, which was incredible. And I joined Tinie on stage at Wembley the other night which was fantastic. So I’ve done bits and bobs, but this will be the first solid run.

As a new artist a lot of the crowd won’t know much about you, so you’ve presumably got to try to win them over.

Yeah, exactly. But I’m up for that. I’m just excited to introduce people to my music.

How would you describe your music to someone who hadn’t heard it?

I would describe it as soulful, I think. And lyrical. It’s all about the lyrics for me.

[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jAnIfqF-Mu8&feature=player_embedded]Emeli Sande - Daddy ft. Naughty Boy - YouTube[/ame]

You’ve been going for quite a while, but you’ve really started to come to people’s attention in the last few months.

That’s right. I’ve been in the business writing for people for the past couple of years and just trying to get everything together. And, yeah, these past six months have been insane.

Who have you written for that Coldplay.com readers might have heard of?

I’ve written a lot for Simon Cowell’s label, so I’ve written for Susan Boyle and Leona Lewis. And I’ve written with Tinie Tempah and Alicia Keys as well. So, yeah, lots of people.

Do you regret letting any of the songs go?

No, as soon as I let them go, I’m like “It’s theirs now”. I’m fine with it.

But if it becomes a worldwide hit, don’t you wish you’d held onto it?

Well, I’ll still benefit with that, so it’s alright!

The Coldplay tour opens in Glasgow, so you get to start off in friendly territory.

Yeah, I studied in Glasgow. I can’t wait. I did the MOBOs at that venue too. It’s great.

There are some long journeys on this tour - which goes between countries on consecutive days, have you done that sort of thing before?

No, I haven’t. I’m sure it’ll be a learning experience!

Have you got a full live band coming on the road with you?

Yeah, my band is four guys. We’ve got to know each other really well over the past year and I’m really happy with how we play together. It’s going to be fun.

How does your music translate live?

We play around with it a bit, but the songs that people might have heard are pretty similar when I do them live. And there’s a whole different side of what I do that people haven’t heard yet, so I look forward to introducing people to that. There’s a lot more intimate songs that people might not expect.

So, are you a fan of Coldplay?

Yeah, a massive fan. I’ve followed their work for ages. I remember when I was studying I used to listen to their songs all the time. I think it’s brilliant writing.

Have you seen them live?

No, I haven’t. I was performing on Jools Holland and they were on the same show. So I saw that, but I’ve never seen a proper show.

Do you have a favourite Coldplay song?

I love the old stuff, like Yellow. But then I love the new stuff like Every Teardrop and Paradise. But I think if I had to pick an absolute favourite, I’d go with Fix You.

Your debut album is out early next year?

Yes, in February. It’s called Our Version Of Events.

You’re in that weird period before the release of a debut where it’s all going well, but you still don’t know exactly how people will respond to the album. Are you feeling excited or nervous?

I’m really excited. I feel very positive about it all. I’m proud of what I’ve made so we’ll just see what people think.

And presumably you just have to try to ignore the “ones to watch” hype and just get on with it.

Yeah, you can’t control it. It’s up to whoever’s judging it. So I’m just gonna keep doing what I do. That’s how I got here, so it’s what I’m going to continue to do.

Are you planning to get outside the UK soon?

I would love to. I think we’re going to start doing that sometime next year, but we’re focusing on the UK for now.

So you should probably try to enjoy this Christmas, because next year looks like it will be a busy one for you.

Yeah! I’m certainly going to try.

It's such a silly time to put tickets on sale. Too late to bought as Christmas pressies as most people have already done it all and right when no-one has any extra money for themselves :freak:

I can be selfish and get 1 good ticket for myself or I can get 3 crappy ones so I can take my sons along again. They'd be very sad if they couldn't go:-(

Agreed! And with all the presale tickets being sold to AMEX holders, I almost feel like I have to break down and get a card (for no other reason). :\

Based on the dates posted thus far, it looks like they'll to some east coast / east-midwest shows in the fall, and come back around the following summer for the "shed" gigs (similar to the schedule for the Viva tour). I mean, they haven't even listed New York dates, and I highly doubt they'd leave that out ( + Detroit). I just hope they don't end up having dates at the same time as Radiohead (who haven't announced theirs yet either)... I'd scream in frustration. :|
