Magpies turn to Shearer

Alan Shearer is to take over as Newcastle United manager for the remaining eight games of the season as the club battle to avoid Premier League relegation.

Sky Sports News revealed the sensational story late on Tuesday night and Shearer is now expected to be officially unveiled on Thursday morning.

Former boss Joe Kinnear - who is held in high regard by owner Mike Ashley - is currently recovering from triple heart bypass surgery and he was due to meet cardiologists next Monday to determine if he was fit to return to the touchline.

However, it has been suggested that he could now move to a role upstairs, possibly as director of football, as St James' Park legend Shearer, the top scorer in the club's history, takes charge.

The 18th-placed Magpies are facing a fierce fight against relegation and are desperate for a morale boost, which Shearer's appointment will inevitably provide, in their bid to escape the drop zone.

Former England captain Shearer has been keen to enter into management and he was linked with the Tyneside hot-seat when ex-chief Kevin Keegan dramatically quit his second spell earlier in the campaign.

Newcastle, who were under the caretaker control of Kinnear's assistant Chris Hughton, face an unenviable run-in, and it is thought their fixture list provides the toughest test of all the teams attempting to survive in the top flight.

Shearer's first game will be Saturday's home meeting with high-flying Chelsea, before matches against Stoke, Tottenham, Portsmouth, Liverpool, North-East rivals Middlesbrough, Fulham and Aston Villa.

Does nobody else not just think this is an april fool's joke?

Shearer has a contract with the BBC for his pundatry on Match of the Day.

It apparently was on SSN last night (like on the 31).

Who knows. We'll see tomorrow. I guess he would be able to get out of his contract with the BBC if he got the Newcastle job though.

BBC were reporting it from 11pm GMT, it's true.

Newcastle are a joke everyday, not just April 1st. :drummer:
Right, so who do you support then?

She supports the team soon to be bottom of the championship when the football league decide to dock them points ;)

which will be a shame :(

Great backs to the wall performance from Man United, the goal from Macheda was a beauty.

Damn, that Villa game was not good for my heart!

Champions league time!

Lucky united, Villa is going to beat you one day.

The day will come - soon! :nice:

So Southampton could start next season with minus 10 points if they don't get out of the drop-zone, and even if they finish 21st in safety they could still be docked 10 points.

So Southampton are in league 1 next year...

You just couldn't write this script, who would have expected Macheda to do it again.

Another 2 points dropped against a team we should have won against :(

But a point is still a point when the teams around you lose as well.
