Viva La 200,000 seller

Featured Replies

VIVA La Vida flew off shop shelves and clocked up huge downloads after being released yesterday.

COLDPLAY’s eagerly-anticipated fourth album looks certain to be the fastest-selling of the year when figures are announced this weekend.

The collection should romp to No1 on Sunday with sales of around 200,000 — shattering DUFFY’s 2008 first-week record of 183,000.

Woolworths reported copies were being snapped up at a rate of 20 every minute. HMV had placed their biggest ever pre-order.

And web forums are flooded with posts raving about the album, the band’s most experimental yet.

One said: “It’s their best album to date. Ten out of ten.”

Relieved

Favourable comparisons to fellow stadium-slayers U2 were rife, as was praise for producer BRIAN ENO.

But CHRIS MARTIN and the lads were just glad to have finished the job.

Chris said: “I feel very relieved that the album is finally released.

“It’s out of our hands now. It doesn’t belong to us anymore.”

Their sales tally is still a long way behind OASIS’ record-setting Be Here Now, which shifted 695,000 copies in three days back in 1997.

But the industry has changed hugely and I don’t think we’ll see those frantic first-week sales again.

But full marks to Coldplay for moving with the times with ideas including letting fans listen to the new album online before its release.

Okay, I know this is a stupid question, but are they saying it'll sell 200,000 by the end of the weekend, or that it sold 200,000 today?

within the first 3 days - they're trying to compare it with Oasis who sold 695,000 after 72 hours for Be Here Now :)

Sorry, really sorry... but 200 in 3 days is very disapointing.

the last one sold 403 in a week but we all know that first day is the MASSIVE day... and they sold something like 150 K from X&Y... so 3 days and only 200K It's not too much and not even close to X&Y...

They beat duffy... but hey, who is she duffy? a 3 mounts old singre? shes very good but you cant say that the HYPE level was the same. I'm so sad that this cd is much more better than X&Y and less selling...

It probably won't be as successful as the radio-friendly, sometimes commercial X&Y, but it will still sell millions, no doubt.

And besides, they wanted to get better, not bigger.

200,000 is not that much.. but in these days when almost all the people just download the albums.. it's a really good number...

you can't compare with an album which was released in 1997.. when music downloads wasn't so massive as now

so.. congrats Coldplay

Off topic, isn't that what Prospekt said? Are the Sun just thinking Prospekt is Chris or are Prospekt and Chris one and the same?

200,000 in the UK or worldwide?

3 days? didn't it come out todya?

I can't wait til the 17th when it comes out in the US!!! i'll be up bright and early to go to the store and get the hard copy! ooooooh i hope we sell 3x the amount the uk sold! it's going to be awesome =)

I feel very proud!!! And I'm happy as a Coldplayer.

As some of you have said... It's not the same. Years ago the music industry was in one of its best seasons, but nowadays we know that the situation is not good for it, and anyways we should feel proud of what Coldplay is doing today by themselves and for us, not about what they're not doing against another good band which is actually one of the most loved in the UK and again we're not talking about equal parameters. Not only the music industry situation but also the importance of the internet all around the world affect the sales. So, Go Coldplay!

Viva La Vida!

Viva "Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends"

Vivan Los Coldplayers !!!

(sorry about my English grammar).

200,000 in 1 day is pretty good...can't wait to see US sales figures. 3 doors down sold 138,000 copies in their first week and they're a pretty big band...not as big as they used to be, but still pretty big. i say it should sell at least 500,000+ in the first week. at least.

It's not for 1 day... they the predict the 3 day sales in 200K,

they only know the sales in the firs day that's true but they can predict the 2 days sales "The collection should romp to No1 on Sunday with sales of around 200,000 — shattering DUFFY’s 2008 first-week record of 183,000. "

in sunday they will sell 200K and beat duffy and they far far away from oasis because of that. if they were sell 200K they waren'y behind oasis. common sence...

3 days - 200K. too bad.

Does this figure include digital downloads? If it does not, it is very inaccurate as I am sure many have also downloaded it digitally. Also, are they just guessing the final number or have they actually counted how many records were sold on day one?

Found another article about sale figures...apologize if it has already been posted somewhere.

Coldplay Looks Good For 400,000 Sales In The UK

by Paul Cashmere - June 13 2008

Coldplay's 'Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends' album may sell as high as 400,000 in the UK this week, based on first day figures.

The band's last label, 2005's 'X&Y' sold to that level in week one in the UK and went on to sell more than 10 million worldwide, including 3.2 million in the USA.

'Viva La Vida' was released midweek, so the next UK chart will only account for 3 days of sales, but that is expected to still place it in an easy number one position.

This week's fastest seller in the UK to date has been Duffy's 'Rockferry'. 'Viva La Vida' will easily beat Duffy's 183,000 first week sales.

However it is a long way off the record set by Oasis when 'Be Here Now' did 695,000 in one week in the UK.

Yea I was wondering if they include the downloads from itunes.Im pretty sure though they dont count the itunes downloads.Thats what i remember hearing a while ago somewhere. But im not sure. But if they dont include the downloads it really does go to show you how the industry has changed,iTUNES wasnt around when Oasis released Be Here Now im pretty sure. But i wonder if there is way to also calculate the downloads combined just to see the number.

As far as I know, the only way to know how much the album has sold on iTunes, and other digital shops, is for them to release the sale figure at some point in the future so we have to wait and see...

That's Great!

They really deserve it!!
