2008 Beijing Olympic Games Thread

Featured Replies

I was confused about the swimming schedule. finals in the morning and preliminaries in the evening???

well, here`s the explanation:

Change in swimming schedule criticised BEIJING: Olympic officials tampered too much with tradition when they agreed to move the Beijing Games swimming finals to suit US broadcaster NBC, Australian swimming head coach Alan Thompson said yesterday.

"My problem with the schedule change was that money bought tradition in the sport," Thompson said.

NBC is paying nearly $900 million for the US media rights to the Beijing Games as part of its deal for the rights to the Games from 2000-2008.

The network pressed the International Olympic Committee to move the swimming finals from their traditional evening start so that US viewers could watch superstar Michael Phelps in prime time as he pursues Mark Spitz's record of seven gold medals at one Games.

"I think in this day and age, loyalty is very lacking in sport and often money talks too loudly," Thompson said at an Australian swimming press conference. "I think when it comes to issues like that, there are certain traditions that need to be followed in sport and they should have ensured this didn't happen."

I know! I love having the sports on all the time! And that opening ceremony was so spectacular!

That little boy was so adorable! What a great role model for little kids. :nice:

Gotta root for my Team USA football (soccer) team.

Am I the only one who didn't really enjoy this opening ceremony?Yes it was perfect and I was really impressed, esp. by these men how they were standing in a perfect circle....but many things were so wrong erm fake....

I have my personal highlights which gave me a big laugh.-

I better shut up in here..---

oh and about the smog. The german cyclist Stefan schumacher had to give up, because of the conditions...:(

(and I quite liked the fact that many important world political faces appeared in the audience and none of the germans was there...because they had other things to do...)

Thank goodness we have three awesome fencers. After Phelps dominates tonight (morning in china), USA might never give up the lead in the medal count...:D

Chinese gymnasts received high scores (more than 17.000) while other countries received about 14.500 - 16.500.

Holy shit! China's male gymnastic team are fricking amazing. Unbelievable strength. :stunned:

Russians are good too.

Well, it's a tough competition for China, Russia and Romania!

Without Paul Hamm, there's always a doubt for USA to win.

What a fantastic performance by Nicole Cooke in the cycling road race today. She showed a lot of guts in those awful conditions!

And just after she crossed the finish line I noticed that "Viva La Vida" was booming out over the PA.

How appropriate!!:D

Anybody else awestruck and amazed by the men's 4x100 free relay? THE most incredible swim race I've ever seen.

Yes.

Wow that was exciting. I couldn't believe he chased the French leader down like that. Word to the French, do your talking in the pool next time.

WOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Any other Americans pumped about the swimming relay?

That was the most excited for a sporting event i've ever been, and I don't even watch swimming!
