Dark K
I don't know if there is a thread like this one, but, anyway, it has been always in my mind what album represents the band members and the name "Coldplay" more. So far, for me X & Y fits them more to me, I mean, the album artwork, the style of the album, is just, that everytime I think of the name "Coldplay", it always comes X & Y. So, what about you guys? Pseudonym
Parachutes is what I wish they were seen like more often, but Id have to say A Rush of Blood to the Head. That album defines who they are and who they will always be no matter how many sound effects they add.

I have to agree no matter what direction they go I will always remember the AROBTTH age.
juanif94
i think AROBTTH is the album that respresents coldplay so far
majgirl
AROBTTH. Without a doubt for me the defining moment of this bands career to this day. I like the new record a lot, but its still for me not quite on par.

Death Hill
AROBTTH, it's their defining moment, I think.
the hitcher
AROBTTH it shows their abilty to write really powerful songs mixed with their experimental side. It has a nice split of piano and guitar songs. AROBTTH was the perfect follow up to Parachutes. My personal favourite album is Parachutes so it took alot to top Parachutes in my opinion and they did a good job.
gus
i think the four obviously the epic sentimentalism is in arobtth. like someone said: parachutes:heart arobtth: lung x & y:stomach vlvodaahf:brain

Unless they come out with another classic album like that one, AROBTTH will always be the one that they will be remembered for.
mountainloafers
Hmm, I really feel like Coldplay can now be considered for a solid collection of work.... You know they always say anything more than 3 makes it a collection. I dont know if Coldplay will ever be able to recapture the feeling of its previous album with its next. Aside from X&Y for me anyway each has been so distinct in its own feeling and sound. X&Y was a big grower for me. When it finally settled in it developed its own essence. As far as being instantly and sustainably enjoyable, AROBTTH sits at the forfront as one of my favorite albums of all time. VLVODAAHF is finding its place in that list for me as well. The feelings that each has given me are equally exciting, sentimental and deeply personal. I will not say one difines Coldplay more than the other. Nor will I say that one is more important than the other. They are a part of an important collection and I wouldnt give up either or part with them. The same can be said for X&Y and Parachutes. I wont dismiss them as lesser parts of the whole as they help make up an important part of an amazing early body of work that is Coldplay.
Shawndorman
a Rush of Blood to the Head is pure classic...pretty much unbeatable. VLVODAAHF is amazing, but nostalgic value and pure genius tips the scale to AROBTTH's favor.
Napoleon
Parachutes will always be the album that comes to mind when someone says Coldplay to me. It's easily one of my favorite all time records, so of course!
Guest Hyperfried
I can't help but go with the bandwagon sentiment: AROBTTH is and will always represent the true soul of Coldplay in its purest form. Parachutes represented, to me, the rawer, less refined version of Coldplay. X&Y was sort of a continuation of AROBTTH. A lot of beautiful, AROBTTH-like moments, but some of the songs were a bit... overthought, I suppose. Viva la Vida, to me, represents Coldplay combining the beauty of AROBTTH with true ingenuity and even more originality than before. It quite nearly paralelled it, and took them to new heights, but AROBTTH certainly remains, in my opinion, THE "classic" Coldplay album.

Starlight
AROBTTH...no question. Maybe I'm biased because of the personal and emotional connections I had made with that album, if isn't that what it's all about? It's a classic, and everyone is going to remember The Scientist and Clocks.

Hotplay007
when i first read what you Dark K, I thought... well duh, A Rush of Blood to the Head! then it turns out... everyone thinks that. lol.
blackchickintheback
AROBTTH of course, but I can say the same for VLVODAAHF. Viva La Vida combines all of what we love about Coldplay, and throws some new stuff in. :nice: AROBTTH was almost perfect, but it represented who they used to be. They're constantly mixing things up and trying something different, which is good.
footyfan10
i would say it is WAY WAY to early say what is most true to or defining Coldplay. Most bands only have one album, but the best bands always have a handful that define them at different points in time, and I think Coldplay is one of those bands (and i assume you all agree). That being said I think Parachutes will always be a fan favorite, but it won't be what everyone considers their defining album. And by fan favorite I don't mean the favorite, I simply mean the only place it will get proper cred is in forums like these. AROBTTH is what introduced them to the world as a great band. it was my introduction for them. because of this i will never forget it when they're ten albums deep and masters of the universe. X & Y will be the album in my opinion that kind of cemented them as biggest band in the world, but for all the wrong reasons. now while their newest effort still isn't getting the greatest reviews, I think its generally agreed that it is loads better than X & Y. But without X & Y the new one wouldn't be selling like it is. Viva la Vida or Death and all his Friends kind of blew me away though. It is, in my estimation, not yet defining though, because we have yet to see where they go next. Hindsight is twenty twenty, and it will allow us to see if this album can be defining. Like I said, six more albums (lets hope that happens lol) and who knows what defines Coldplay. But I think it's going to be different for everyone. The consensus though, I imagine from the first four, is that AROBTTH and VLV or DAAHF will be the one's the best define them becoming great. Parachutes and X & Y were really springboards for everything that happened after them. Fans will appreciate this fact, but I imagine few others will.
