I think coldplay are easily the best band to come out of this century. Oddly enough there have been very few dominating forces in 21st century music.

They would've been run over by oasis, the verve, nirvana and radiohead in the 90s which was full of said powerhouses, but those types of bands have dropped off the maps as of the last 8 years (which is why everyone compares coldplay to historic bands like radiohead and u2 as opposed to current bands). Who else is there? muse?(although I think technically they started late 90s and has been unsuccessful in making an impact across the pond) the killers? the strokes? the shins? mainly a bunch of niche bands that do what they do really well but don't have the consistency or variety to reach u2-like status.

I'm kind of dissapointed that the past 8 years hasn't merited a lot of young potential for coldplay to compete against for the world's ears. Come a "best of the 00's" vh1 special coldplay will dominate, but who knows whether they would've survived the fierce competition of decades past.

Well Coldplay is clearly at the top...every single one of their songs is rated 4 or above on my itunes...and most are five...every song is simply an amazing work of art

I would have to say that radiohead and nirvana are the two recentish bands that come close are far as every song being absolutely great...i am not sure if they are current enough, "this generation"

and as stated before there simply hasn't been a lot of competition...no bands have been consistently great...i think this is somewhat a product of the itunes age...all u have to do is produce a hit single...it will sell a billion copies because of easy access online...but u dont need to produce a great album with great songs throughout b/c people are in it for the pop single...

Maybe Radiohead. But don't get me wrong, I absolutely love Coldplay, it's just I feel Radiohead has more recognition. But probably Coldplay is the most successful band of the decade, no other band has sold like them around the world.

Listen to this dude, he's right. There's been hardly any competition in the alternative area or whatever you want to call it thanks to the rise in popularity of hip hop and R&B, despite the often boring and repetitive themes in them.

The first band I thought on when I heard the title of this thread was, maybe not so strange, U2. Cause U2 has been compared to Coldplay before. But if U2 isn't counting here, there can't be any bands at all:)

Yup sadly no band has ever competed with coldplay......

Sadly I think The Music industry is worst now than the last decade .... COldplay is the sole band That can MOVE THE WORLD.. you get me?

Coldplay have CONSISTENT ALBUMS POUND FOR POUND SELLING MILLIONS OF RECORDS until now they sell strongly around the world (see my sig!!)

Ive got a few bands that can but inconsistently cant keep up:1.) LINKIN PARK ( 00's band that have sold 30 mill and 20 mill on the ir early studio albums from 2000, and 2003) SADLY their LAtest offering MINUTES TO MIDNIGHT is HUGE FLOP selling only 6 mill see? their not consistent and their latest album really sucked and i think its hard too recover from that.....

2.) GREENDAY --- ALTHOUGH THEYVE STARTED SINCE THE 80's I think this band has such inconsistency that you may not know which album is gonna be good

Their only hit albums WEre DOOKIE and AMERICAN IDIOT..theyve realeased so many albums by now theyve shouldve had become a legendary status by now .. but their not....... the two albums which were realeased far between each other... so you cant tell whether the next album will FLOP OR NOT so they too cant KEEP UP with coldplay

THats all ive got to say...... No one can Compete with them .as of now... ANd I know Its pretty Bad for the industry that only coldplay could be the one rulling hte worldy charts....:(

Linkin Park had a dramatic change following the collapse of nu-metal as the new sound of the 2000s going to alternative. It was a flop because it failed to be new and impressive.

As for Green Day.. that's their problem. Inconsistency. Failure to impress as well. Otherwise they'd be up there by now with CP...

I know of one band that does kinda sound like Coldplay, sound wise, but it doesn't beat them at all. They're called Turn Off the Stars and I have to say they are pretty good. You can kinda feel that Coldplayness a little, but like I said, it doesn't beat Coldplay at all.

Green Day is for laughs now in my opinion. Once my teacher told me they were around when she was in highschool, I was like whoaa.

Evermore's another one, except they're quite good

I could list a few good acts although nobody would have heard of them (thus proving point)

You're a daft question!

Well said. Couldnt agree with you more.

Coldplay are not the best band this century. Well, it depends how you define 'best' I suppose. Anyway.

How do you mean "close to Coldplay"? I don't think there can be LOADS of bands 'like Coldplay', i.e. big, famous, everyone knows them. There's only room for a few bands like that, that's not to say that there aren't bands out there who are just as good as Coldplay or even better. There are loads of bands I like a lot who HAVE consistently released great albums for many years and who I sometimes like more than Coldplay, but they're never in a million years going to get as 'big' as Coldplay. It's the media and the industry that raise these kind of bands up - people were looking for another Radiohead/U2, and the press latched on to Coldplay and bigged them up. Hey presto. It could easily have happened to another band.

I completely disagree. It's Coldplay's songs, fantastic live shows and unique personalities that make them stand out.

The main reason why they were propelled on the road to superstardom was the genius of "Yellow" (which still sounds as good today as it ever did), regardless of any role the media may have played in it.

Of course the media are going to play an important part, but they have to have something to "work" with in the first place.

Coldplay supplied amazing material. The rest was pretty much a formality.

You might be able to fool the public for a short time, but things are bound to fizzle out eventually if the singer or band fails to live up to the hype.

That's why countless bands have fallen by the wayside, while Coldplay have gone from strength to strength and have now produced such as fabulous album as "Viva La Vida".

Well I don't know about that, but I think I can justifiably be proud of it!:D

well, nobody can predict what would happen but coldplay was in that certain period of time luck is an importan factor also. but remember there was a lot of bands when u2 arrived(talking heads, simple minds ,etc) but u2 surpass that bands who are better for some people. the same thing is happening know with coldplay there are a lot of bands that some people think that they are better but this bands would never reach coldplay. and i think a lot of bands learn from coldplay a lot of thinks maybe there isnt a musical factor but theres alot of bands that begginig to think that play piano as a primal instrument is cool seeing the coldplay success and i think a lot of bands signed their contracts for playing piano and be mellow like coldplay.

^^ yes indeed I hear a lot of Coldplay sounds popping up everywhere. And I love it. It is just what this century needs. :flutterby:

Therein lies the problem; too many bands follow the Coldplay formula. Maybe I'm just being a cynical young fart.
