Facebook Sucks.

Featured Replies

It's de-humanizing I tell you.

I just found out my best friend from junior high is engaged. I know because of Facebook- she changed her relationship status. No warning, no announcement, just a little heart on a page.

I also just found out a friend, or at least a friend of a friend had died very suddenly. How was I told about this? There was a Facebook group for his funeral, two lines below that engagement notice. I found out that he was sick last week (on Facebook!), which was shocking, but I had no idea... He was 25 and brilliant. And now he's gone and no one even told me. Why would they have. But I just found out in a little box sandwiched between my aunt's lunch and someone else walking their dog. Or something like that. Like it was nothing more significant than doing laundry.

I have an easier time having a conversation with some of the people on here than with real once close friends who now seem to think that Facebook is the answer to maintaining relationships. They've even given up on msn. They run off and say "it's ok, I'm on facebook". Which means I find out that they're brushing their teeth, but nothing about who they really are or think or what's going on. Until you find out their boyfriend has cancer one day. And is dead the next week.

Talk to the people you care about, guys. Really talk to them, face to face in person if you can. Because you don't know. You can never know, you know? I wish I knew how, but in true Maritime fashion, everyone is moving away.

Excuse me, I have a long, dark night of the soul to attend to.

Oh Mo that sucks :\

It's like things always have to go to the extreme before you notice them.

I actually think about these things quite often - You never know what's going to happen and who's gonna go in a way or another, gah.

Which just goes to show you can only ever realistically keep in touch with a small group of people properly.

Facebook is a useful tool if used sensibly, as with everything else.

Having "hundreds of friends" is meaningless as it's unmanageable.

Yeah it sure does suck!!

Awwww, so sorry for his death! :(

Such an ugly fact that people take this site so seriously. Argh, pisses me off!

On the other hand, however, I'd assume it's a worse case in countries like the US, Canada and Britian. Here most people use it to get in touch with old friends from school or use little of those page comments or whatnot.

As for myself, I don't have a Facebook account nor do I plan to having one anytime soon. Just never been my thing, you know? Honestly, I used to have a hard time using MSN too! My friend used to argue me a lot for things like "Oh, what do you mean by this?!" or "Why're you so upset? I didn't mean anything!" and I'd be like "Damnit, I'm not upset! I was just giving away a simple remark. If you hear me, you'd know!". Hehe, yeah, used to annoy me a lot. Though I do blame my friend for the most part now as these encounters happened mostly with her! hehe

Anyway, I'm not saying it's the worst thing out there and it's too devilish, I know it can be somewhat useful in the getting-in-touch department. But I just hate it, sorry. Use phones, mobiles.. smth! I mean, goddamnit, texting and leaving comments dosen't always mean the same thing as when you hear them in person or on the phone!

Ah, sad, just sad what these social networking bloody sites have turned most people into. :-/

i hate facebook. so much.

it's for pedifiles.

i have one cause my friends made one for me... i really don't want it.

does anyone know how you delete these stupid things?!

They are 2 incomparable things

that is like saying Love is better than Cheese

does anyone know how you delete these stupid things?!

I heard from a friend that you can never really delete it. When she tried to delete hers, it said that they would keep it 'dormant' in case she decided to come back.

A bit scary :stunned:

I'm fed up with the height of nosyness that facebook has reached really. It posts stuff you write onto other people's news feeds.... why?! what's it to do with them?

I'm sorry to hear about your story though M. :( Very sad.

Facebook takes the emotion away from everything.

i think facebook is good for the quick note and for sharing pictures, but i've learned the hard way that you can't really keep up relationships with it. i don't think you can keep up relationships at all without making an effort to see a person physically, or next-best, call often, then MSN/AIM after that. i generally like facebook and have a good time with it, but i'm really sorry to hear about both of those things, mo. i agree that it's terrible to find out important things in such an impersonal way, especially with people you thought you were close to.

i know people that spend hours on facebook. i just can't do that. usually i check the news feed to see if there's anything THAT interesting that my friends are doing, see if there's anything i need to respond to, and look at photos. other than that, i'd rather spend my time here on coldplaying. it's so much more personal, and i'm able to create great friendships rather than let others go stale.

facebook is where i draw the line, though. no myspace for me, thank you.

Facebook, like anything online, is what you make of it, I go on to check a few things, maybe post a comment on someone's wall, look at pictures people have been tagged in, it's great for that kind of thing

I think you are looking far too much into it and wanting it to do more than it is supposed to

I agree.. it's not that facebook it's bad... but if some people thinks that facebook it's enough to keep close relationships... then it's people's fault

I'm sorry to hear that Mo :(

I'm so sorry.

I know what you mean though. Even though it helps when keeping contact with people that you rarely see anymore, it's ridiculous that it's defining relationships. It's so much better to just be there in person.

Space Cadet, facebook isn't stupid, the people who take it seriously and don't actually have social lives outside of it are stupid. It's a good way to find whoever you need to talk to since almost everyone has one. It's not meant to capture the real personalities of people - it's meant for asking someone when something in class is due, checking a phone number if you don't know, looking into a friend's top artists, or showing off your best photos. Basically, facebook is the iPhone of the internet - it has everything you need pretty much all in one place. Just because people misuse facebook doesn't make facebook itself suck, it makes the people suck.

R.I.P. to your friend.

I hardly ever go on facebook these days
