If I was Coldplay, I'd say "Ok. Since the sound problems were only in the first two songs, we'll play a free gig of just the first two songs"

A bit much...

Not every concert is going to be flawless, and you cant expect that it will be when you purchase a concert ticket. All you're guaranteed with the purchase of your ticket is a concert, and barcelona got one. Reviews I've read from journalists have said it was a FANTASTIC show aside from the sound problems in the first 2 songs only. It seems its only really fan reviews that are saying how terrible it was...

They put in a lot of work to give a good show, they werent slacking or brushing Barcelona aside. Technical problems are bound to happen once in a while though, especially on a tour of this length...

What about the people at the gig recently where the curtain fell down on the guys? Are they gonna petition wanting a free show??

I think Guy played a wrong note at the concert I was at, I want a free gig now!

In Prague last year they played Fix You again because of a bearable mistake most people didn't even recognize. I'm wondering why they haven't started playing again or repeated Violet Hill later.

Anyway, the petition is a bit overrated

My comment from Barcelona

It hurts to say this. I love you like Coldplay, and I wish him well. But I must explain:

If you go to a concert with your family (the first time my daughter was one in a stadium), you spend 225 euros for the concert (me, my wife and daughter), and for over half a year waiting for the concert, you find that is recorded in DVD ... wait a fantastic night, especially with Coldplay. Ok? 're Thinking what I'm saying?

But ... the sound comes evil, lazy. Not for just 3 songs, but throughout the concert. You wait, you want that is not true. You hope that the sound does not spoil your night. In the grandstand area (right side of the stadium) we had serious problems with sound during the whole concert. If you explain to our disappointment, people crying after the concert ... I spoke quietly with my family during the concert. Is this normal?

Sorry for Coldplay, but in Barcelona it was bad, really bad. I if you know please their fans, will be their problem. At least, I ask that there be no doubt of what we live for more than half of the stadium. More respect, please. Coldplay just tell that he was very ill. It was not our fault, and we want to reconnect with the group.

I'm 49. I'm not a creature, and have lived many concerts in my life to say this was the worst and most disappointing I've attended.

Coldplay can not respond with a lie, that problem was only 3 songs. There are too many testimonials. Coldplay should react differently, not simply deny something of which there are many videos and testimonials from people who lived it.

Will continue talking about this concert, for sure. Coldplay should do something with it.

okay I can tell you know you can talk about this for a long time but CP won't do "anything" cause what should they do as even the people can't agree if it was for three songs, was it a big problem or not...???

As you went to live shows before you know that things during live gigs can always happen, they shouldn't but sh** sometimes just happens.

They played by now approx. 150 gigs on this tour and one gig the sound was not 100% in some areas which I think is a pretty good quote.

Its a shame for the people who went there but what exactly do you expect???

- Money back?

- another gig?

- should they stopped playing and went off stage?

Tell me...

And you, what would you do if it had happened in London as I say?

Josep

I would be p**ed off for a day or two and then move on. Cause I know things just can go wrong. But as I said before what do you want to happen? We can all moan and complain but what shall happen???

I Totally agree with Josep. I was there, as you can read in my older post.

I beg all of you to respect the critics. I believe that everyone has right to explaining and to complaining. I have read absurd things as like :"Don't you worry, since a DVD has been recorded, you will listen at home." That's sounds inaceptable comming from Coldplay fans that could apreciate the magic in a live show.

I never expect that the band was lying shamelessly saying only the three first songs sounded badly, when the sound was deficient during the whole show except for the people of the first rows. Sorry, guys...it's not my first concert at all (The Police as well in 2006 at the same venue...U2 in Wembley and many more) I can recognize when the sound quality as quite good and not.

Me, I go from Madrid to Barcelona. I did five hours of queue for to hear absolutely nothing (like me many persons who were at my side).

It was my Coldplay's first concert and I was practically crying. I'm going to go at Wembley, but what happens with those who cannot go to London or somewhere else?

okay under these circumstances I can understand your complaints. if it were only the first two songs, they could just have started anew but it seems like some areas had massive problems during the whole show. that's sad of course, i really hope for you to get a reaction by the band.

on the other hand there are different opinions as well. if there was a common opinion stating the sound was bad, the fans should be compensated because they paid a lot of money for it. coldplay concerts are way too expensive to just say shit happens.

Maybe its because you guys just realized NOW that Coldplay doesn't blow peoples ear drums out with their concerts. I can't understand how a they would have certain speakers out for the entire concert and not fix it. Good god move on with you're lives

EDIT- Just because Roadie #42 only noticed the bass going out for three songs doesn't mean Coldplay themselves say it was only gone three songs. It's one person behind the stage, how could they possibly know what's going on at the back? Eesh, people.

Having said that, I'm surprised they wouldn't notice... perhaps everyone else plays loud at that stadium but not them?

I guess so... I have the show downloaded and during all the slow parts, people are just carrying on conversation right through the music. (Hardest Part, beginning of DAAHF etc.) Not surprised some people couldn't hear, the crowd for a most part was pretty rude.

Coldplay...so gracious. To demand a new concert for only 3-4 songs...rediculous. Coldplay gives the WORLD free downlowds, free CD's, free videos...come on! Because of their big heart for the fans, we all got to see them...touring for over a year, give them a break. This petition is putting a bad light on Spain..shit happens.

Yes, you're right. Here we are almost Neanderthals (the spanish people and of course all the crowd coming from another countries that were in Barcelona)...ok, the question is closed for me. I just hope that you never have to face a problem like this.

Thanks for all, this is my last post.

See you in Wembley.

Cheers.

Coldplay have incurred the wrath of fans after sound problems marred a concert in Spain, writes the London Evening Standard online today. Thousands of people have signed an internet petition demanding the band performs a free gig or gives them a refund.

Frontman Chris Martin's wife Gwyneth Paltrow was among the 63,000 fans at the sell-out show on Friday at Barcelona's Olympic Stadium. But sound problems began 30 seconds in following the failure of three amplifier towers. By today more than 2,200 concert-goers had signed an online petition calling on Coldplay to perform a free gig or refund the £60 ticket price.

A Coldplay spokesperson admitted the problem, but claimed it had been put right by the third song.Fan Juan Manuel Ramos said: "I spent a lot of money to get from Tenerife to Barcelona to see this, and it was the worst concert."

#42 and the Catalan chorus, as written on 7th September 2009

I remember somewhere back last year I talked about the band's stadium show in Tokyo. It was an absolutely belting night and I wrote the following: "You get the impression that the guys are on such a roll that the PA system could fail, the lights could go dead and they'd still carry on, just them and the crowd, too caught up in the moment to notice anything had changed."

Roadie sensibility sometimes approaches the superstitious - so much so that phrases such as "tempting fate" and "touch wood" are commonplace and spoken with completely straight faces. It should come as no surprise then, that the chance to test out the bold claim above, comes on a night with 64,000 punters and a bunch of cameras filming for an as yet unspecified project.

The band take to the stage to absolutely deafening cheers. If any crowds on this tour have actually sung the opening melody from Life In Technicolor, they haven't done it as loudly as this lot. I'm underneath the stage and I can hear them. Great night, guaranteed.

There I go again....

Suddenly, as the band hit the huge thumping chords before the verse of Violet Hill, something is plainly up. Intermittently, I stop feeling the thud of the bass through my feet. From where I am, I can't place what's going on exactly, but the scrambling of audio crew makes it plain that the problem-solving hot potato appears to be theirs.

Much happens very quickly to get the stage left PA stable. From Clocks forwards, my feet remain shaken throughout, which means that we're back on track. It also means that the problem has been nipped in the bud by the third song. This could easily have turned into a gig-spoiling nightmare, but there are many very experienced and skilled people here who weren't about to let that happen.

Lets not forget though, that there's also four very stubborn and determined fellas on stage not about to let that happen either. I remember Jonny telling me about the band's first Glastonbury show, way back when. They were dropped off at the wrong gate, miles from their stage with only minutes before they were due on.

Many fledgling bands would have accepted defeat, perhaps been a bit gutted, perhaps just taken it away as a story to tell in the pub. Coldplay however, ran the width of the festival site with their guitars, borrowed as much as they could lay hands on from other bands present and did the gig whilst still trying to catch their breath.

There are many stories throughout their history that illustrate this shared personality trait. Problems, setbacks and obstacles seem to fuel them on to succeed out of sheer defiance. If anything, this has got stronger with age. They don't let up one bit tonight and turn in an astonishingly impassioned performance.

And then finally, we have the sixty thousand Spaniards. They're jet engine loud throughout, willing the band onwards and chasing away the demons. The decision to film here was down to one thing only - that is, the fact that the crowd are utterly astounding.

FC Barcelona, the world-beating football team that play in this city, have apparently adopted Viva La Vida as their unofficial anthem. This means that many of the crowd here tonight are already well-used to belting out the "woah-oh-woah-oh-oh" from the chorus during matches.

Today, they've been singing it outside whilst queuing, they've been singing it between the opening acts and they're singing it between songs tonight. When the song itself kicks in, it's the proof that what I said way back in Tokyo is indeed true. The event and the emotion are bigger than any technical concerns.

What's important here is the band and the audience and more even than that, the songs. It's the shared experience, the communal celebration of this thing that so many people feel the same way about.

It's been an emotional night, for sure. Never a dull moment.... R#42

:o

I'm tired of this shit, I'm tired of saying it again and again and again and again but I will do it (again): IT WAS AN AWESOME CONCERT!!!!!!!!! I LIKED IT A LOT!!!!!!

I just can't undestand some people.

Totally agree with that!!!

All their gigs have been fantastic, as nobody has ever complained as you're doing now. Things have reached such a point that is shameful, like when you're a child and you can't have what you wanted.

And about all of you who're angry... how many people do you think were affected?? I bet it's about 1/4 of the whole stadium, maybe a little more, but it was just a minority, so that kind of problem doesn't deserve so much noise!!

Just think that problem was not too serious, I mean, it could be disappointing, but if it had been another kind of problem?? the sound too much loud, misplaced fireworks, electrical problems because of a storm (that could be possible according to the weather news), some accident in the crowd... THAT could be a serious problem!!

But if you think that the music is too low... just shut up and listen!!

This is the biggest load of bullshit I have ever heard! The sound is never gonna be that great at a stadium show, any regular gig goer knows that. Anyway the main group behind this is all the Johnny come lately fans who are moaning "oh this was my first time seeing Coldplay and my night was ruined...". Well maybe you should have gone to see them play somewhere before a little more intimate, they play a good few times in spain every tour don't they? Or does it take for the Barca team to be running out VLV every Saturday before you starting taking an interest and jump on the bandwagon?! Get a life.

Any real Coldplay plan fan would not join this petition.
