The Mixtape Exchange, Round 3: Swaps complete, please post your reviews

My mix has gone with me everywhere... To work, in the car, up the mountain, to lunch, its been played in nearly every room in my house and in many different environments... Different songs take on a whole new meaning when played in the car if you ask me. I love a good road mix. While I wouldnt say my mix is perfect for that long drive its as varried as the view seen along the way. I like it.

Track 1 Slide. I loved this song when it was released and kept loving it for a while, as did many folks. A good opener after youve heard the whole mix.

Track 2 Are they French? Has kind of a Euro-rap-ska vibe to it. Interesting listen. Not something I would have ever chose to listen to. Love the mixtape exchange

Track 3 LOVE THIS! Georgeous voice, vibe, and lyrics... Romantic and timeless

Track 4 Reminds me of Joy Division. Great guitars!

Track 5 Not what I thought it was going to be when I first heard the drum beat. Female vocal is more like a spoken word performance... Organs and keyboards are rather sinister. I imagine this in a vampire movie soundtrack. Goth is not really my cup of tea... But Whats A Guy To Do?

Track 6 Love the opening guitar riff! On headphones it travels from ear to ear. At first it seems like its going to break into an all out speed metal jam until the viola or violin introduces itself amongst the rock. Instrumentals always leave me wanting more though.

Track 7 Is in MP4 format so I have to play it on the VLC player. Another instrumental. I like this one better than track six. Still I always like to hear the vocal instument so much... I miss it when it isnt there.

Track 8 This is right up my alley! Its like something I would purchase on my own. Who knows I may already own it. I like this song the best out of them all. It has an Elliot Smith. Sufjan Stephens vibe that I like very much. The lyrics are great. A definate keeper!!! Must know who, what and where.....

Track 9 A fantastic throw back! The Girl From Iponeema <----- spelling? All wrong I know. This is a great performance from Frank.

Track 10 Another LEGEND! Billie is truely one of a kind! I saw a wonderful play in Chicago based on her life and Ive always been a fan of her music.

Track 11 Another Joy Divison/Bahaaus eerie 80s ditty. Im sure Ive heard this before and I absolutly love it here! Great tune excellent music! Love the bass and guitar parts and how they respond to each other. 2nd favorite track on the mix!

Track 12 Live track LA LA LA LA LA LA LA LA Festive and fun ending to a mix that only gets better as it goes along.

Your choices were a mixture of genres and vibes, I very much appreciated that. As the mix goes on I start liking what you have created more and more. I hope it was worth the wait for the review. It was worth the wait for the mix for sure. Thank you! I will keep it and listen to it again for sure.

Jeff

It was mine! :cheesy:I'm glad you liked it, but I think I could make it better if I had more time. The thing is, I had exams from late January til late February and wasn't even online that much.

Anyway, here's the tracklist:

1. Goo Goo Dolls - Slide

I've heard this song for the first time in 2005. Loved it from the beginning, but then I somehow forgot about it - maybe because I didn't listen to music on my family's PC anymore. But then I heard it again this year and started loving it all over again.

2. Yelle - Je veux te voir

Yeah, French. :D It's a song that makes me laugh every single time I hear it. Apparently, the song mocks a French rapper, Cuizinier. I don't know the background story, though.

3. Kommil Foo - Atlantis

It's a Belgian duo. I first heard some when some Belgian backpackers were playing their songs on a train. I've found this song after a lot of searching, and I love it since then despite not knowing the language.

4. Sonic Youth - Candle

I don't have much to say about it … except that I like it and thought it'd be good to put it in the mix.

5. Bat For Lashes - What’s A Girl To Do?

Natasha Khan, AKA BFL, was Radiohead's support act in most of concerts of the European In Rainbows tour. While her songs may seem bland on the album (Fur and Gold), the live versions of them are pretty good – she surprised me in a good way.

6. Apocalyptica - Quutamo

I'm sorry to disappoint you, but those weren’t guitars. :p Cellos were right there from the beginning! Apocalyptica is one of those bands I was obsessing over for maybe a year and while I’m not listening to them at the moment, I still find their songs amazing – because of the melodies and the fact that they don’t use guitars to make such a sound. This song also has one or two versions with vocals in French and German so if you want to hear them, just give me a shout!

7. Mart - A Coast To Roll On

This is a very very unknown band that I have discovered maybe two months ago. It’s a group of local musicians playing music that wasn't really present not even known 'round here until they formed a band. At least I haven't heard anything similar from any other local band. They had a show a while ago: a film was playing in the background and dancers were performing, too. It was mindblowing. If you want to hear the rest of the album (Paralelle), just click here.

8. Andy Yorke - Ode to a Friend

It’s Thom Yorke’s younger brother. I didn't want to keep it in the mixtape at first but then I thought: “Why not?” He's the former singer of Unbelievable Truth and in 2008 he recorded his solo album, Simple, and this is where the song comes from.

9. Frank Sinatra - The Girl From Ipanema (with Tom Jobim)

Actually, this is, setting aside the most known Sinatra’s songs, the second one I loved from the start. I find all the emotion described in their voices and I can’t help but feeling blue when I hear it.

10. Billie Holiday - I’ll Be Seeing You

I found this one in one of Radiohead’s “office charts” that were posted on their website. But this is not why I added it to the mix – I find it gentle, dreamy and absolutely lovely. A great song, I reckon.

11. New Order - Ceremony

No Radiohead would among other things mean not knowing this song. I am obsessed with it and I’m listening to it almost all the time. It’s a classic song that everybody should know.

12. Vlado Kreslin - Passenger

A cover of Iggy Pop’s Passenger made by Kreslin, my favourite Slovene singer/songwriter. I hope you liked it – of course it’s not one of his best songs, but I wanted to show you what the atmosphere is like when he is rocking out on the stage. His music is rock and also folk, you should listen to some of his Slovene songs (I didn't put in another song sung in a foreign language because I think two were just enough). You can find one [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c507PdRnkog]here.[/ame]

It’s more or less a love song; he sings about a failed relationship with a woman he still loves (my favourite line is [translated] "A large part of me is you, a large part of you is me, and a lot of me is still up there ...").

And here’s the link for others that’d like to hear my mix.

VERY COOL! I had no idea you made my mix Nina... Thats awesome. I played you mix again today. Ive downloaded several of them and like nearly everything Ive heard. Andy Yorke's song gets repeated alot. The New Order song stumped me. I could not remember the name of the band so Joy Division came to mind. I have been told time and time again to listen to Sonic Youth and I still do not own one of their albums. I have several of their songs though. Thank you again for the mix it is a good one!

j

They say Daydream Nation is a good album to get into them. But I'm not the one to advise you what to listen to. Download albums randomly, that's what i usually do :D

Here is my review. Not the most exciting thing, but oh well!

1. Not the biggest fan of the vocals in this one. But some interesting sounds. In some ways it reminds me of Our Lady Peace.

2.Love the strings and brass in this one. This stays awesome throughout. I'll definitely be checking them out some more.

3. Sounds good right after number 2. I'm not sure exactly what to say for these reviews haha. Are those bagpipes? If so very cool. I used to play the bagpipes.

4. Kind of a haunting start. I'm guessing this is the same artist as no. 3. I like 7+ minute songs that are not boring.

5. Sounds more like classic rock. Not necessarily my favourite. But not a bad song either, just not my type of music I guess.

6. Sounds like a Sufjan intro or something. Some good songwriting there.

7. Is a cat being murdered? Sounds like an intro to something interesting. Liking the vocals.

8. Brass + hand claps + choir vocals...this might be a little too happy for me!

9. Not a huge fan of the vocals, although it sounds familiar. Trying to put my finger on it.

10. Liking the guitar intro to it. Intersesting song.

11.Another decent song. Can't say anything on this mixtape has really blown me away. Its not bad, I guess just not what I'm feeling at the moment.

12. Really different. So far my favourite song on the mixtape. Interesting percusion and like the strings.

13. I don't understand a word of this, but its good.

14? something messed up on my iTunes...not sure how many songs are in this mixtape. I think this is the last one.

A long instrumental. Maybe a little too long. Some interesting parts in it for sure.

They say Daydream Nation is a good album to get into them. But I'm not the one to advise you what to listen to. Download albums randomly, that's what i usually do :D

and 'Rather Ripped'...it's one of their more accessible albums.

I've looked through the thread and checled my list of participants and I think there are 6 Mixes yet to be reviewed. I'm sending reminders t those people, but I know for a fact that a couple of them haven't been on the board for a while.

Hopefully they'll check in soon.

i'm making yours as we speak.

Cool avi, by the way! New season, I presume?

@ Briggins: Uhm..I think something went wrong, because I made a mixtape with 21 (!) songs (and even 2 extra songs because I couldn't choose:embarassed::rolleyes:)

And I'm not sure what songs you did receive, so it's gonna be a puzzle for me to see what songs you díd receive :P

So I hope you have a little patience ;)

Haha no worries, yeah something went wacko with the songs. I could always try to listen to it on a different computer or something.

My review of this mix comes as a treat to me. Alison asked me to review this KICK AZZ mix because its original recipient hadnt signed on to do so. Well let me tell you its full a little gems... A study of this music at its subtle but substantial relevance!

A Diamond In The Rough...

It is..... and,

I got to say it is a sparkling one!

Flanked by familiar bookends the mix left me otherwise stumped and frazzeled by the comforting familiarity of it all and just as amazed by my bewilderment... All throughout the first 3 listens I kept asking my self, "who is this? " and, it was always a GOOD thing. This mix could not have fallen into better hands.

CANT WAIT FOR THE TRACK LIST

1. Dustland Fairytale by The Killers.

My favorite song on Day and Age. GREAT SONG!

2. Has a nice groove "I Know You Turn It On" I am assuming is the name of the track. Follow you Rome, Get you on home and turn it on!... Great lyrics. The song steeped its roots in punk and ends with one last YOU TURN IT ON! LOVE IT!

3. More laid back, in a great way after the ROCKING SHAKER track 2 was. This song is fantastic. (personal aside) "can we hang out?" You can play what ever you want. This song bursts to life at the end getting the mix back into a rocker again. At this point in the 2ND full listen I was like HELL YEAH!

4. Track four sonic opening is nice. This song makes me want to drive WAY too fast! I love it. His vocals are very similar to the guy in track 3. Ultimate road track. Everytime the chorus kicks in its like laying it on the gas pedal.

5. I think about this track maybe a little more than all the others. With its tender "country style" opening guitar to this guys eFFing awesome vocal! Ive heard this song a hundered times on the radio or somewhere and never really LISTENED to it. I love its Rolling Stones "Mick Jagger" feel! The Stones would tear this song up in a good way. I should know who this and cant wait to find out who it is so I can get more.

6. Ok, YOU GUYS! If you have bothered to read this far... Go ahead and download the link when it is left. This songs thumping beat it followed by the lyrics "put out the fire boys, put out the fire on us... bring your buckets, bring your cousins bring your sisters and your brothers boys put out the fire on us.... KILLER TRACK! Love the piano kicking in towards the end!

7. You have really kept my interest. Everything you have chosen is top notch. Another great "raspy vocal"

The only thing up to this point is there hasnt been a female vocal. Not taking points away from it of anything. It just seems like a popular thing to do on mixtapes and you have stuck to your guns with what seems to be a theme... Or great investigation of the person that was originally intended to review it. Well Ive gone on and on and I am going to save the rest of my review for later this evening or first thing in the morning. I need to let the dogs out and such. bbl

Ok well I would describe mine as being very psychedellic and experimental

Track 1- was an instrument with some cool synths and beat

2 - I think it's called an End has a start or something he says it in the song and it suits the theme but I think the guitarist is very talented- Jonny's better of course

3- I actually like this song at first it sounds really hardcore but after listening to it, I would have to describe it as quirky

4-He sings about shining light but it would definetly be a car song for me. It's the guitar strokes that really make it but what I love- I love the abrupt ending it's just like someone cut it with scissors.

Still yet to listen to the others

Review:

the mixtape i've received has 10 tracks. (although the unzipped folder said it has 11 files).

track1.

3:35

female voice... is a bit like down-tempo to me... sound familiar. (it says is Heart of Glass by Nouvelle Vague, i only knew about the original, that's Blondie). ;)

i liked it.

track10

3:01

is enegetic and calm at times. another female voice... at times tries to be a hard voice  the chorus is very catchy  and sound familiar to me too... i should knew it surely but i can't identify the track nor the singer. May be is called Cool to be kind. they say that a lot.

track 2

4:17

rap song, clapping, choral parts... swearing. :P my player says something as the author is Timberland, but since i'm not into that music i can't identify who they are or the song title. :\ but i would had said they are Simple Plan or some similar band. also energetic in some parts and catchy too, some electronic guitars about the end of the track. (that make me think of spanish rap song Mentiras by Tote King :o )

track 3

2:52

another female voice, catchy lyrics and music. says her mom didn't wanted her to go with some guys or something like that. ... wow a guy voice joins. i think i should be able to identify this one but i can't ... i like the trumpets, and the jazzy part. (i have to confess that at the first seconds i thought it was a Tryo song like Desolée pour Hier soir).

track 4

3:08

the player says is heartbeat by annie.

another female voice. i've never heard that singer before. some dance traces but the voice sounds mellow. a bit like Kate Ryan.

track 5

4:33

begins with piano, a male voice, ... sounds sharp to me.. well husky.

i think is a cover of an original song of another author... may be for the way he sings it sounds like a xmas song to me or something like that. goes more rythmical now, another voice joins, now sounds like folk... like irish folk or something... so it makes me think it's sung by some american singers. yep definitelly must be a xmas song...

again i have the feeling i should knew that song but i don't know it. :embarassed:

track 6

4:08

my player says is Do it again by the chemical brothers.

ok the music sounds like TCB to me, but surely i couldn't had identified the song.

"Oh my god what have i done? do it again" as their Galvanize song it ends with some arabic music style to me. :)

track 7

3:38

another energetic song  male voice. now is a due... mm may be is the last shadow puppets? ... it sounds like Alex Turner there but don't sound like the Monkeys really. seems a bit like alt-country. wait wait is a radio performance...

track 8

1:46

my player says is sunshine on my window by spiderbait

another female voice... lol is crazy, goes from very mellow and calm to very rocky part :P hehe.

track 9

2:54

my player says is: arctic monkeys' mardy bum.

and right it is... is the only song (and first track) that i can had identified beign honest. :P

 so well done to the mix maker :) i got to discover some new music to me, i liked it, good changes from slower to rocker songs and good male-female mixture too. (i don't use to like female voices :uhoh: ) generally has actual music, no instrumental tracks.

(the only bands i already knew were: Nouvelle Vague/Blondie; The Chemical Brothers, Arctic Monkeys).

---

and the mixtape i did hadn't been posted yet, so i don't know if wait, so to post the download link or not. :\

That's my tape :D

hmmm.

Ok, sorry for the delay... Let me put your mix on again!!!

Now, where was I?

brb

8. Has a similar but more mellow vibe as the band in track two... For me this is the entire mixes weakest link. Something about parts of his vocal seem wimpy to me. I love the song and music is thumping. The vocal just isnt there...

9 Lounge-y back of the bar room ditty with BIG personality. Has a Nick Cave smoked a "doob" vibe about it that restrains itself from blowing up into a cliche

10. THE BEST SONG OF THE MIX PERIOD!!!! Reminds me of Reckoner by Radio Head for some reason.

11. I picture the music video for this song taking place in a desert town... All hot and sweaty. This is a sexy song... Good "mood" music ya know?

12. Started of sounding like Dave Mathews but I question that. Its Dave/Dan Kearny? Is that his name... Dern it. Ive heard this and I love it. It would fit right in on my mp3 player with several other sultry numbers. good stuff!

13

I always hate track 13 lol... superstitious maybe I am always irked by 13...

With its mysterious opening THIS track 13 was off to an appropriate start and really battles closely with track 10 as the best of the mix. Eerie and haunting. The story told here is best heard in the song itself... AWESOME!

14 Beautiful .... gorgeous female voice makes its debut and its a perfect duet... Cant wait to hear who this is....

15

Arguably the best track on Keanes Under The Iron Sea...

PROSPEKT!!!! I will never forget this mix. No, really... Love it! You know, I gotta say that Alison asked me to politely respond to your mix because the original person didnt get it. I want you to know I have kept it with me on my mp3 for the past, 3 - 4 days or so and it just keeps growing on me. I am grateful to have had the opportunity to have reviewed it. I think it was meant to be... It is far from "main stream" it is hardly accessible in many of its areas. Maybe it sticks too much to one genre and would miss the mark with others, but I LOVE IT!

Thanx, J

Haha. Thanks. I feel great that you actually liked it. The reason you didn't hear many females vocals is because I pretty much don't like them at all. So yeah. :P

What I tried to do with this mix was have it be real upbeat... but then I kind of lost that as it kind of slowed down near the end. But basically, I just picked some of my favorite songs. I'm happy you liked it. :D

Here's the tracklist...

1. The Killers - Dustland Fairtytale

You recognized this song, so you obviously know how great it is. Upon first listen to Day and Age, this was aboslutely my favorite and still is. I love how it builds up.

2. Franz Ferdinand - Turn It On

Great funky sort of sexy song. One of my favorites on Franz Ferdinand's new album "Tonight." The rest of the album has a similar vibe. So if you love this song, you will definately love the rest of the album. You should check it out.

3. Razorlight - Hostage Of Love

Being from Canada, I never really knew the flack these guys got over in Europe or whatever. I kind of do now, but some of their songs are just awesome. Just like you, I love how it erupts at the end. It's great. Another song you might wanna check out from the same CD is "60 Thompson," which is more mellow but nice and acoustic yet.

4. Gaslight Anthem - The '59 Sound

It's funny how you kept talking about a gas pedal and the band is Gaslight Anthem. :P Yeah maybe not? But it's a good upbeat tune. If you wanna listen to the acoustic version... it's good too... really nice and emotional.

5. Jet - Move On

I loove this song. A bit country, but it doesn't matter. It's nice and soothing. Love the part about three minutes in when he sings with that passion. I only have one of their CD's which is "Get Born." But from there you might like "Look What You've Done" and "Come Around Again."

6. Cold War Kids - Hospital Beds

Just got into this band recently. Totally love them. Love this guy's voice and love how they incorporate the piano into the harder vibe. I chose this song because I love the beginning and the lyrics. I'd also recommend "We Used To Vacation" which is probably my favorite song of their's.

7. Howie Day - Sorry So Sorry

I agree with the raspy voice. I love it. Most of his songs are pretty similar... but that doesn't mean they're bad. "Ghost", "Collide", "Numbness For Sound", and "Secret" are some other good tunes by him.

8. Editors - Escape The Nest

I'd probably agree with you on this one about the instruments. The guitar is probably my favorite part of the song. I don't actually mind his voice... I don't usually listen to such deep vocals... but I dunno... It's really grown on me. I laughed though when you said it had the same vibe as Franz Ferdinand... but I dunno maybe I'm just not seeing it. :P

9. Franz Ferdinand - Words So Leisured

Another Franz song. I like it, kind of witty and laid back. This is a B-side of theirs that is kind of a slowed version of(same melody) and has some of the same lyrics as another one of their songs, "Dart of Pleasure". So I dunno, I bet it would be interesting for you to listen to that?

10. Thom Yorke - Black Swan

Probably reminds you of Radiohead because it's Thom. :P I love this song, really mellow. It's just fantastic. Although it took me about a month of listening to realize that chorus said "fucked up." I'm slow. :p

11. Last Shadow Puppets - My Mistakes Were Made For You

One of my friends told me he got a really Indian vibe from this song. Now that he mentioned it I can kind of hear it. Really sort of a sensual song. It's good. :)

12. Jack Johnson - F-Stop Blues

I love love love Jack Johnson. Everyone says his songs all sound the same or whatever. But I just find him so peaceful and calming. If you love this song, you'd love the album this is off "Brushfire Fairytales". Really mellow and more of the same. This is probably my favorite off it.

13. Arctic Monkeys - 505

Same singer as track 11. I love this song... as you said the beginning it beautifully haunting. And then when it erupts when he goes "I crumble completely when you cry" it's just perfect. Beautiful.

14. Snow Patrol - Set The Fire To The Third Bar

Probably my favorite Snow Patrol song. It has the same haunting feel to it. One of the few instances where I love female vocals. It's really nice. Another song with great female+male vocals is "9 Crimes" by Damien Rice. I was gonna put that in, but I felt it was almost too mellow for the tap. Just a recommendation. :)

15. Keane - Hamburg Song

I'd have to agree with you on this one for sure. For me, it's totally the best off that album. No competition. wanted to end with something kind of calm and soothing. So I put this. I think this song is absolutely beautiful.

Here's the link btw. If anyone else wants it? http://www.sendspace.com/file/dogky3

12, 14, and 5!!!

HAH! I should have known all 3 of these... as I own all 3 cd's... LOL:stunned:

Whoops... Oh well. I got into Snow Patrol very recently and purchased their albums and the Reindeer section out of order. Ive yet to listen to everything. Thats terrible, I know. Jack Johnson is great I dont think I do have the album this track came from but I do own his 2 latest ones...

I am going to look into all of the other artists on this mix! Thanks for sharing it! The Arctic Monkeys are fantastic! I am going to start there.

No review for mine yet??

Wow, has anybody ever read a post and thought there had to be something wrong with it, but not figured it out until about a day later? That just happened. What possessed me to type "Coldwar?" XD
