Carla did I not send you an invite for this round?

Still have a couple of unreviewed mixes if people want to take them off my hands...

you did Alls, but I failed to get here before :embarassed:

doe sthat mean I can still get in sorta?

I'd love to get involved with one of these mixtape exchanges, I'm just afraid I won't be able to come up with enough obscure music, and the person will already know every song...

Yeah, I was afraid of that too. You could work with a theme or a good flow...

Join the next round! It's fun :)

I signed up for one of the unreviewed tapes too. I've listened to it once and I really like it.

Give me a few more days, please. I'll be back with a review this weekend (or Monday latest). (It's the tape with Psycho Killer ;))

I also signed up to one, and now is when my workload decides to increase :dozey:

Patience, i will have the review ready for tomorrow :D

Well, Redgirl, count me in for round 4 (however far in the future that may be) whenever it comes around. This seems like a fun thing to participate in.

I can send you an unreviewed one, and you could send one to me that I'll pass on to someone else

So is mine being reviewed by someone else now?

Yes, I sent yours on today - haven't heard back from the new recipient yet

We left a gap of around 3 months between rounds 2 and 3 to give people time to enjoy the previous mix and go shopping for new music... lots of people are introduced to bands they've never heard of before through this and they then go off to find more stuff by them

*looks back*

Indeed it is. Looks like it never got crossed off the list and so was sent out again.:embarassed::lol: Whoops.

Still a joy to listen to, though.

It really is a great mix... You should post a review as well...

No-one has reviewed my '2 hours of prog' mixtape yet :(

Nor my main mixtape

 You only sent me one link to pass on to your partner... and I've re-sent that to someone else seeing as your first partner has disappeared

I was joking Alison ;)

I only had the one mix-tape

D'uh... I'm a bit slow by the end of the week

I have already reviewed my mixtape but I was lucky enough to get to listen to another one.

Again many new (to me) songs, many bands I want to hear more from. This is a great way to find new music.

1. Long build-up before it bursts into loud and wild. And then it's over. Great opening track!

2. Starts with a dirty guitar, I love it. It's dark and disturbing, has a drive and energy. Abrupt ending.

This song won't leave me alone, it's determination and action. Reminds me of Joy Division.

3. My notes after the first listening says 'bland' but it isn't at all. This song has grown on me. A rich, dense sound with funny little surprises. Catchy.

4. Drums! I love them, dark and driving. Great lyrics and vocals, brilliant chorus. The ending is a surprise.

To me it's a song about transition that leaves you with the feeling that all will end well.

5. A thick wall of music with layers of graffiti on it. Do I hear bagpipes? I love the strong rhythm, lots of sounds, interesting voice. And then it changes towards the end.

I think this mystery mixer likes the unexpected and so do I. My favourite so far.

6. Noisy, catchy, I wanna dance and jump around. It's summer, festivals and fun. I'll definitely remember it! :)

7. Yes! More jumping. The voice isn't as strong as the music but it's a contrast that works well.

8. Another song where rhythm is central but this time more electronic with a deep bass tone in the back. Love it! Again a surprise ending, a little sad but in a good way.

9. Something completely different. Soft, jazzy, warm. Mmm... Wanna dance? I do. Feel-good, mellow song. The mystery mixer surprises me again.

10. Aaah, bass! This sounds familiar... Psycho Killer! Classic! But which version is it? It's not Talking Heads, is it? No... Haven't heard it in ages, good choice!

11. I have a new favourite! Love this one from the great intro and all through the magnificent chaos. Bagpipes again? Probably not this time either, but I hear them and I want more!

12. Old crackly vinyl, jazzy, sweet strings and a rocking guitar together with vocals both sweet mellow and desperate. Sounds strange but it works perfectly together in a very interesting song. It just fades out... Who IS this? Great song to end this mix.

Another great mixtape, diverse with many surprises. It wasn't made for me, but it could've been. Music I don't normally listen to, which means lots of good news.

I hope the original recipient will return to these shores and find this great mix of strong rhythms, noisy post-punk and mmm... those drums. Thank you, mystery mixer! :nice: I really enjoyed listening. What have I been listening to? :D

So Als, was kind enough to send me a mixtape, and I tried reviewing it:

  • 1. ahhh I love this : very dramatic drums…. I know this voice, what is it! It’s for sure an artist I have in my itunes, but I can’t put my finger on it! Edit could it be fiction plane? His voice reminds me of Sting
    2. hmm not a fan of the vocals, sorry, it sounds like a chant, not really my thing though. I do like the trasition bit in the middle
    3. hmm I do not seem to have a track 3
    4. something slow, it’s an alright song, nice for background music. But it doesn’t particulairly stand out for me
    5. dramatic, it reminds me of damien rice. It’s not a happy song, but it’s beautiful.
    6. Ohh Irish? Violins, uptemp and happy! I like this very much! Also i nice contrast with the previous song
    7. Liking this too, going to be hard to pick a favorite I;d certainly like to hear more of this ! is it a banjo In there? (i suck at this) but anyway the tune in there is so very happy, sounds like spring!
    8. Easy start and then really builds up, that’s how I like it, but country-ish, the singer has a very unique voice
    9. Don’t have that either, it says patrick wolf ? but it’s not working for me
    10. Dance, not really my thing anymore these days, but I can appreciate it, it was something I used to like, reminds me of a song I have from those days, it was by D note
    11. The beginning reminds me of Walking on a dream by Empire Of The Sun, but that changes quickly, liking the vocals, and the entire feel of the song.
    12. Slow rocky, sufjan springs to mind. I could be completely off here, so don;t killme if i;m totally wrong :P likei t very much though,
    13. But harder, heavier on guitar, reminds me of the kaiserchiefs, but the vocals and music don;t really connect for me..
    14. Good song, rocky, my kind. Not completely blown away lyrics are a bit cheesy to me
    15. Teehee turkish? Love the drums, it reminds me of a belly dancers, makes me wanna try that, (better that I don;t though) but this is more of a club thing?? This makes me think the creator of this mixtape has roots here? And some shouts in there sound like my name

My first mixtape, and I loved it :D really need the tracklist to this! Some thinsg I definitly wanna check this out

While writing this final bit I listen to track 1 again, and I think sounds like Sting! Could it be fictionplane?

Can’t pick one favorite but number 1,6 and 7 I think are REALLY great

so Tnx! :D

That was mine :nice: I'm really glad you liked it, I tried to make it as diverse as possible. Anyway, here are the tracks!

Band Name- Song (Album, Year)

1) No Age- Eraser (Nouns, 2008)

This band has been getting a fair deal of coverage lately. They've got a pretty cool DIY work ethic. Thought this would be a great song to start a mix with.

2) The Kills- Love is a Deserter (No Wow, 2005)

The Kills are a post-punk/ lo-fi band with a little hint of Blues. I love the band's edgy and catchy sound and this song is a good example of that.

3) Andrew Bird- Fitz & the Dizzyspells (Noble Beast, 2009)

The newest track on the mix I think. I find this extremely catchy and just uplifting. Especially the whistling.

4) The National- Mistaken For Strangers (Boxer, 2007)

Aren't the drums great? :D They pretty much make the song. When I first heard this, I played and replayed it. They're a terrific band with 4 very good albums out, this being the latest one.

5) TV on the Radio- Halfway Home (Dear Science, 2008)

This was a bit of a gamble on my part as I had only just started to get into them. But I felt this song went with the rest of the mix. I'm not sure its bagpipes in the background or just horns on some sort of loop. Great song and album either way!

6) British Sea Power- Remember Me (The Decline of British Sea Power, 2003).

These guys just rock! This was the first song I heard by them and it just got me. Its strange how, even though the lyrics are quite dark, it still has a very upbeat, catchy mood to it.

7) Wolf Parade- Fancy Claps (Apologies to the Queen Mary, 2005)

One of my favourite albums by a somewhat quirky band. The singer's voice is an acquired taste but as you said, the contrast works well.

8) The Album Leaf- Always For You (Into the Blue Again, 2006)

Lovely little song this. What is interesting is that its all one guy playing about 9 different instruments (as well as singing). Not too familiar with the rest of his work but this song is great.

9) The Sea and Cake- Midtown (Oui, 2000)

I felt like throwing a surprise into the mix and this is what came up :D. The jazz influences on this band make their sound mellow and relaxing.

10) Talking Heads- Psycho Killer (Talking Heads:77, 1977)

Ah you already know this little gem :D Its great, isn't it? It is Talking Heads btw, but there are different versions I think.

11) Wolf Parade- I'll Believe in Anything (Apologies to the Queen Marry, 2005)

Its Wolf Parade again! I'm surprised you didn't recognise his voice. The drums on this song are brilliant and can't help but sing along. I'm really glad you like it!

12) Portishead- Glory Box (Dummy, 1994)

I love this band! felt it was the best way to end the mix. Really mellow but still grabs your attention from when it crackles till it just fades on out. Their older stuff was a lot jazzier than their latest album, but its all very excellent.

I'm really happy you liked it (and that it finally got reviewed :P ). It was a pleasure putting this together and I hope anyone else who listens to it enjoys it as well. Here's the link: http://rapidshare.com/files/201961519/Mixtape.rar

mine was half reviewed... do i wait for it to be reviewed completely or do i reveal the complete trackling, link and my receiver? :uhoh:

@ burningmonk

You did a great job! I'm def going to look for more music from these bands, think I'll start with The National, TV on the Radio, The Album Leaf (just one guy? :stunned:) and of course Wolf Parade. Then the rest :D

How could I not recognize the voice on #7 and #11?

Funny it was Talking Heads, I wasn't quite sure, thought it sounded too modern :D

I have listened a little to British Sea Power, but it didn't get to me. I'll give them another chance now.

You had to wait a long time for a review... but I'm so glad I got you tape :)

4) The National- Mistaken For Strangers (Boxer, 2007)

Aren't the drums great? :D They pretty much make the song. When I first heard this, I played and replayed it. They're a terrific band with 4 very good albums out, this being the latest one.

I Love The National! I wish they would get on to album 5 already... Ive been dieing to hear new material after The Boxer!

it's nice to know that someone has included Wolf Parade songs in her mixtape. great choice! looking up related bands like Sunset Rubdown and Swan Lake (common factor: Wolf Parade's Spencer Krug) is a good idea too!

If there are still unreviewed mixtapes, I could do one.. I didn't make a mixtape though.
