01 Moon River, Andrea Ross. Gorgeous voice, beautiful song.

02 Quite cute. Not really feeling it sorry.

03 Prince? Hmm, cool. I still need to investigate Prince. I only know a few of his songs. Cinnamon Girl is a tune.

04 Not feeling it.

05 Great bass.

06 Virtual Insanity - Jamiroquai. I liked it when it was first released.

07 I like this. Sick beat, edgy, sexy. Mary J Blige?

08 Nice percussion in the intro. RHCP? Not really a fan.

09 The voice sounds a bit like Michael Stipe, but, is this REM? Really? This is cool. I've only listened to Automatic For The People. Must investigate REM (assuming of course that this is REM).

10 Chiming guitar - U2? Sunshine. I'm seeing summer, sun, fields, loveliness. Never really felt the need to get into U2, though.

Hi Chris, I was the mystery mixer... I tried to do something different then I might normally do just to keep it interesting...

Track 3 Elephants and Flowers by Prince from the Album Graffiti Bridge. Ive always been a fan of his. Not my favorite song of his but it seemed to work here. Ive been getting into some of his less popular tunes lately. They mix with TV On The Radio's stuff pretty well I think.:)

04 Not feeling it.

Track 4 Walking On Sunshine by Jesus Jackson. Hmm... too upbeat maybe? This song defies a shit day for me and just makes me happy...

Ok, for those of you who have yet to read a review of your Mix, if you like, I'll mail your link to someone else and get them to review it...

For those of you who have already reviewed a Mix, if you'd like to volunteer to listen to another one, let me know

Here's my review for [edit] the mystery person. So sorry for the wait, I went away to Wales for the week and there was no internet where I was staying.

Anyways:

Firstly, I would like to say I love your mixtape. Such a variety of musical styles and contrasting tracks. You must have put alot of thought into the choice of tracks, and I thoroughly enjoyed listening to it and would like to discover more of some of the artists.

Track 1:

Wow! What a way to start! Soft building silence, gentle piano, then the lubricious voice, slowly layering to become an instrument itself. The first section: simple piano, layered vocals and little bell sounds... and then. Bang, the track explodes into life, going from the simple vocals - then the synth - big sounds - drums - but still the layered vocals adding so much depth to the track. At times the sound coming from my speakers, especially when the bass drum beats was almost epic. I've re-listened to this track and i'm picking up new intricacies every time. 2/3 through: Back to the basic backbone, the vocals and synths in the background and the piano. The long spreading falsetto voice, almost singing a word. Then everything slowly fades out.

What a way to start the mix. I love this track! Siqur Ros Maybe?

Track 2:

Taken by surprise at the change to the walking double-bass and cow-bell ring opening of the track. In the background I think I can hear a wooden xylophone-style instrument. No 'modern' electric instruments here. This grew on me the second listen through when I started to listen to the vocals and lyrics. Is that an Oboe coming in with the vocals? (I'm not very good at distinguishing instruments). I liked the way the singer sang in this, it matched the whole style of the song and the instruments being played.

Track 3:

Again, another surprise at the change of musical tack. Strong guitar riff to start with which returned throughout the song. Lots of stop-starts in the background. When I first heard the opening riff I thought it would continue through the whole song, but instead the main basis of the song is the vocals and the percussion riff. I liked this song. Lots of varying and different things happening.

Track 4:

Starts with a 'grungy' guitar and a ascending and descending bass and snare then the 'grungy' repeating vocal sound. Lots of guitar and bass creating a 'dark' sound. Not many vocals, until about half way though when the dark foreign chanting start. It reminded me slightly of Rammstein. (What language, sounded eastern European?). At times not very easy to listen to

Track 5:

Liked the start to this: the guitar intro. Flowed well from the previous track. Then the vocals slightly distorted; couldn’t make out if it was a female or male singer. I would imagine the track name is ‘The Boy Never Gets Older’. The sound had to what to me sounded as some European influences. Fairly short but good.

Track 6:

Another surprise: a punk track. Heavy bass and shouty vocals, I can’t say punk is my thing, but this slightly grew on me.

Track 7:

Piano, long flowing synth in the background and what sounds like a harp, some very sweet vocals which launch into the tech drumbeat, slightly reminded me of Air.

Track 8:

Foreign vocals, I guess Spanish? Catchy opening, I found myself wanting to join in with the chorus. Very funky. I think it is a Accordian in the background. Short but sweet and a great introduction to the next song. At first I thought it was a long intro to the next song.

Track 9:

Very upbeat guitar intro, sounded familiar. Joined in the ‘hey hey hey’, I really liked this track. Very, very catchy tune. Is it by Vampire Weekend?

Track 10:

Strong guitar intro, must be a rock/Britpop band. Quick tempo.

Track 11:

Firstly I thought this track sounded like the Kaiser Cheifs. My friend told me this is ‘Golden Skans’ by The Klaxons. What a tune! I love this track. Really catchy intro and I can’t stop listening to it.

Track 12:

Opens with a distorted piano and a wavy synth in the background. Short female vocals with the piano chords. Then opening up with the drums and guitars. I liked this track, it has a nice uplifting feel to it and I liked the vocals.

Track 13:

The opening reminded me of the kind of music that would go with a grassy sunny meadow. The horns added a bounce to the track and it was really nice to listen to. Another different sound; it reminded me of track 2.

Track 14:

Very funky. A mix of bass and techno accordion. Another track with foreign vocals, I’d love to know what language. The accordion sounded cool, and there was a xylophone in the background. Towards the ¾ there was a little Latin style interlude and some English vocals.

Track 15:

“I am a vampire”. Nice way to end the mixtape. Short, but sweet track.

Thanks for your mixtape. I really liked some of the songs and would love to listen to more by them.

nope sorry that is not mine, it must be about one of the guys that did not get their reviews... who were complaining about that?

Track 1: It begins with an electric guitar and then a riff that is played throught all over the song. The rythm and the lead guitar was sort of pop, so the voice, with a catchy chorus. It was ok.

Track 2: Same stlye as the first, just that this time, there is more variety, more decent guitar solo, and the intro with a piano and the usual instruments, the piano plays only during the chorus and a different outro with falsetto and background voices backing up the lead singer, well it was fine.

Track 3: THere is not track 3, neither 8 or 12; I supposed you made a mistake or had to delete songs but nah nevermind

Track 4: Beggining with a harmonica, this is surely a Dave Matthews Band song, with that reggae-rock or coffee rock style. Not much my thing

Track 5: how I wish, how I wish you were here!! Sorry couldn't help singing to this awesome song, Wish you were here by Pink FLoyd, what can I say about it? MOst of us love this classic.

Track 6: Fake Plastic Trees by Radiohead. Amazing and beautiful song. That track 5 and 6 follow up was great and strong.

Track 7: Well it begins with some like reversed chords and electronic stuff, then a piano do some little arrangements, I'm sure it's a post rock or art rock song but not exactly, amazing guitar chords enter, lead guitar with arpeggios that fit perfectly the song, then drums and bass kick in, and little electronic sounds. Then things go louder when electric guitar goes heavier and the keyboard/electronic organ adds a very catchy riff. The singer has a pleasant voice too. Great song, I can't wait to know the name and the artist. I loved this one.

Track 9: Keane, I don't like them much, but this song wasn't bad at all

Track 10: A jazz song, with the bass and the drums, you know cymbal based rythm with nice bass and some tubs and trompets. Yeah nice work, but at 6:54 it becomes boring and repetitive.

Track 11: mmm, how should I define this song? It's different, it's like a mix of jazz and rock, the singer has style, nice bass, drums and guitar, but what make this song special is that rythm voices they do, you know like those on jazz, I loved this one, nice guitar solo and specialy the outro rocking out. I'm eager to know this one too.

Track 13: Begginin with lovely electric guitar arpeggios, very lovely guitars, then the drums and bass join in the catchy chorus with those oooohs. I suppose the song is named America. Very good song.

Track 14: Good way to end. An acoustic guitar based song with some bass and drums of course and organs on the bridge. And it ends soft with beautiful strings and acoustic guitar arpeggios.

Ok, at first I thought it was going to be just a sort of café playlist, like the music they play on Starbucks, but after some songs I discoverd it was rather a delectable mixtape with enjoyable songs :)

I'm glad you liked some of the songs. This mixtape was a kind of compilation of the songs that got me into the artists that I like now, some of them are not their best tracks but their the songs that introduced me to them.

Track 1: ‘Up on the Downside’ – Ocean Colour Scene:

The Ocean Colour Scene are a 90’s Britpop band with some excellent tunes. This song came up when I put ‘Coldplay’ into a music suggestion website. I really like the OCS, and it was a tough decision between this track and ‘The Day We Caught The Train’, but this was the track that got me into the band. I would suggest ‘The Riverboat Song’ or ‘The Day We Caught The Train’ if you would like to hear two different sides of the band.

Track 2: ‘Fill My Little World’ – The Feeling:

Whenever I hear this song it always puts me in a good mood. It’s the perfect soundtrack to a warm sunny day. It takes me back to summers spent at my Gran’s garden in the sun. The Feeling is one of my favorite bands along with Keane and Coldplay. Its worth checking out ‘Sewn’ and ‘Join With Us’.

Track 3: ‘Let it Be’ – The Beatles:

Unfortunately this track for some reason did not turn up on the mixtape. The Beatles are one of the greatest bands in the world, ever. I loved them as a child, especially the album ‘Yellow Submarine’. ‘Let it Be’ is the most uplifting and positive song ever.

Track 4: ‘Sleep Through The Static’ – Jack Johnson:

I love Jack Johnson. He must be the most chilled out person in the world. Although this was not the track that got me into him (it was ‘Banana Pancakes’) this is by far the best song, along with ‘All at Once’ on his new album. The message in the lyrics is so ponient:

“Shock and awful thing to make somebody think

That they have to choose pushing for peace supporting the troops

And either you’re weak or you’ll use brut force-feed the truth

The truth is we say not as we do”

I could listen to this song all day, its so laid back and chilled. I know a lot of people find Jack Johnson too bland, but its just so relaxing and he writes some very catchy songs. This track goes perfectly with ‘All At Once’, and it’s worth having a listen to ‘Banana Pancakes’

Track 5: ‘Wish You Where Here’ – Pink Floyd:

It was only January this year that my friend showed my ‘Wish You Where Here’. This is such an amazing song, I went out and listened to the whole LP, found it fantastic, ‘Shine On You Crazy Dimond’ is like one massive guitar orgasm. Then I went on to discover ‘Dark Side of The Moon’. I really love the album, and it’s a work of creative genius, I’m now finding Pink Floyd influences in almost every band I listen to. I think ‘Prospekts March’ is a great homage to ‘Wish You Where Here’.

Track 6: ‘Fake Plastic Trees’ – Radiohead:

My friend Alex is a massive Radiohead fan, and it was through his constant playing of their songs that I gave in and became a fan. ‘Fake Plastic Trees’ is one of their slightly less depressing songs, (Alex complains that Coldplay are depressing). I think Radiohead are one of this generations greatest bands, ‘Ok Computer’ and ‘In Rainbows’ are two bloody fantastic albums. It was a really hard choice of which song to choose, as they have so many different styles, but in the end, this was the track that got me into Radiohead.

Track 7: ‘How To Be Dead’ – Snow Patrol:

I’m really glad you liked this song. It was one of the very first songs I ever liked from a band. The album that this song comes from ‘Final Straw’ is IMO their best, and a thousand times better than ‘Eyes Open’ which was when they became popular. I would relly suggest listening to ‘Chocolate’ and ‘Run’ from their album ‘Final Straw’.

Track 8: ‘Mr Jones’ – Counting Crows:

This didn’t make it to the mixtape either. My dad was a big fan of Counting Crows and it rubbed of on me. ‘Mr Jones’ is a great catchy song about friendship, identity and angst.

Track 9: ‘Perfect Symmetry’ – Keane:

[iloveKeane]

I love Keane almost as much as Coldplay (and that really is a lot!), along with Snow Patrol, Keane was one of the first few bands that I truly got into. Many people complain that Keane is too bland, or sounds the same. So instead of putting on ‘Everybody’s Changing’, I chose this track, which can only be described as ‘epic’. Everything about this song is great. It comes from their new album ‘Perfect Symmetry’, which was IMO the best album of 2008 (Yes, I know which other albums came out in ‘08 to…). The lyrics are so poinent: ”Who are you? What are you fighting for? Holy truth, brother, I choose this mortal life.” This song is the proverbial tits for so many reasons, and is a w e s o m e live. The song has everything, a big piano riff, a choir section, and some of the best lyrics and vocals to come from Keane. I would strongly suggest to anyone (even if they don’t like Keane) to listen to their new album, they will be blown away!

[/iloveKeane]

Track 10: ‘Brooklyn’ – The Youngblood Brass Band:

I saw this band at a world music festival called Womad. They where one of the best live acts I had seen in a long time, this track really does not do the band justice, I meant to put on the live version which manages to capture a fraction of the energy that they have when they play live. I like this band because its traditional Brass instruments played in a modern way and the outcome is fantastic.

Track 11: ‘Pressure Point’ – The Zutons:

This song was a demo song on a PSP years ago, after listening to it, I went straight down to the music shop and brought their album. If you like this song, then I can guarantee that you will like the album it comes from ‘Who Killed The Zutons?’.

Track 12: ‘Jerk It Out’ – Caesars:

This song was on an advert for the iPod shuffle years ago. It’s a catchy, heavy song. But sadly this didn’t copy onto the mixtape.

Track 13: ‘America’ – Razorlight:

The whole of their album ‘Razorlight’ is of this standard. It’s a great song, I like the lead singers voice and this song has some political undertones. I’m glad you liked this track, its well worth listening to the album it came from ‘Razorlight’, I also like another song by them called ‘Golden Touch’ which I reckon you will like.

Track 14: ‘This Boy’ – James Morrison:

James Morrison – his first album ‘Undiscovered’ is a fantastic mix of soulful guitar songs. I decided to end the mixtape on this, as it’s a nice uplifting song, which I love to listen to. Although this was not the song that I first heard by him (it was ‘Wonderful World’), this is one of his album tracks that shows the quality of his album. Have a listen to 'Wonderful World' or 'Undiscovered', two tracks that I also love.

oh thanks, how could not I identify snow patrol? :P and Jack Johnson is almost like dave matthews, thanks for the tracks!

My member has gone awol, and hasn't signed in since the 17th Feb :(

I believe they'll be posting the tracklist, and therefore revealing their identity, very soon...

This one was mine. I'm glad you liked it, i tried my best to get it to be diverse and up and down all of the time. I gotta admit i did a bit of stalking to try and guess what you liked.... and then give you the exact opposite :D I didn't wanna give you something you could've putten yourself together, so hopefully you liked one or two songs enough to get their stuff :nice:

Here's my review for [edit] the mystery person. So sorry for the wait, I went away to Wales for the week and there was no internet where I was staying.

Anyways:

Firstly, I would like to say I love your mixtape. Such a variety of musical styles and contrasting tracks. You must have put alot of thought into the choice of tracks, and I thoroughly enjoyed listening to it and would like to discover more of some of the artists.

Track 1:

Wow! What a way to start! Soft building silence, gentle piano, then the lubricious voice, slowly layering to become an instrument itself. Bang, the track explodes into life, going from the simple vocals - then the synth - big sounds - drums - but still the layered vocals adding so much depth to the track. The long spreading falsetto voice, almost singing a word. Then everything slowly fades out.

What a way to start the mix. I love this track! Siqur Ros Maybe?

Saeglopur – Sigur Rós

You got it right, it is Sigur Rós. I absolutely adore this song, it has such a great mood there are sounds everywhere and i just cannot get sick of it. I wanted the mixtape to open with something calm and mellow but at the same time interesting enought that you wouldn't instantly wanna skip the track. I thought this one was the way to go :nice:

Extraordinary Machine – Fiona Apple

It's odd that a lot of us have a thing for female voices. I am one yet i don't ussually listen to stuff sang by girls. Fiona Apple however, is absolutely amazing. This is a woman that i adore listening to (her album that goes by the same name of this track is all sorts of interesting for someone as young as her). I needed a track that would get song #1 and #3 to flow perfectly and this one seemed to fit perfectly.

Devil’s haircut – Beck

From his album Güero. Get it. Seriously. This is one man who's not afraid to change his musical style not only from one album to another, but from track to track. Beck is not afraid to loose a bit of his fanbase due to this changes, 'cause the man is utterly brilliant. Can you tell i love his music?? :p This song is one that i wanted to get it in the mixtape at all costs

Guerra – Café Tacvba

I wanted to make a complete change at this point in the mixtape and i love this song (and this band) so i stuck it in there. This is a mexican band (the best one if you ask me) so the chanting was actually spanish :P It's certainly not a tipycal song by them, if such a thing exists. Their early albums had a very thick traditional mexican music sound, while the latest ones are more so alternative rock. But on the way from point A to point B they did this double album (Reves/Yo Soy) which is completely experimental and almost entirely instrumental. That's where i got this song from. It's not only their most creative work, but also an album that is almost impossible to get (which is odd for something that was released in the 90's). It's probably not very easy to like Cafe Tacvba if you don't have a latin background, but maybe you should give another one of their tracks a try. Maybe they'll grow on you :D

Broken Boy Soldier – The Raconteurs

This was actually a last minute add, i had another Raconteurs song in this spot but it didn't work so i just switched songs :P

This is what happens when Jack White gets to have more than just someone playing the drums (and someone not very good playing it) with him. I love this song, it sounds so different to anything that's out there. Oh, and it's actually a male singing :P

Track 6:

Another surprise: a punk track. Heavy bass and shouty vocals, I can’t say punk is my thing, but this slightly grew on me.

A later date – Joy Division

I wanted to add something older and completely diferent to the direction the rest of the mixtape was taking, so here it is :smug: It was either this or something by Queen, but i imagined you'd completely identify a Queen track, so....

Joy Division rocks people

Track 7:

Piano, long flowing synth in the background and what sounds like a harp, some very sweet vocals which launch into the tech drumbeat, slightly reminded me of Air.

Sugar Water – Cibo Matto

Duet of crazy japanese girls that met in NY and decided to make music together. Their music is crazy and funky and usually is named after something eatible  This song goes waaaay back for me. I heard it years ago, but couldn't get my hands on it until a couple of years ago. This is by far my favorite track by them, it sounds kinda sexy and almost... haunting. Sean Lennon was part of the group for a while, but the band's no longer together. Here's a little fact for you: one of these girls is "Noodles" from Gorilaz

Track 8:

Foreign vocals, I guess Spanish? Catchy opening, I found myself wanting to join in with the chorus. Very funky. I think it is a Accordian in the background. Short but sweet and a great introduction to the next song. At first I thought it was a long intro to the next song.

La Primavera – Manu Chao

There's no way to describe Manu Chao's music. Is just as latin as it gets without being traditional or uninteresting. You just gotta listen to it. It is spanish, and it was an accordian. This song actually is an intro to another track, and i intially had them both in, but it seemed a bit much. Plus the next track worked perfectly with it :nice:

Track 9:

Very upbeat guitar intro, sounded familiar. Joined in the ‘hey hey hey’, I really liked this track. Very, very catchy tune. Is it by Vampire Weekend?

A-Punk – Vampire Weekend

You can't possibly listen to this one and not join the Hey hey hey hey!! Or at least i can't :P It's joyful and fun and makes you wanna sing along and jump around to the beat. Something a bit friendlier was needed in the mixtape, and there's no better way to achieve that than with Vampire Weekend. If you haven't, try and listen to their album. There's some really good stuff in there :D

Track 10:

Strong guitar intro, must be a rock/Britpop band. Quick tempo.

What a waster – The Libertines

Despite Pete Doherty, i always liked The Libertines. I still do. I was torned whether to add one track by them or not, but i like this song too much to leave it out :P

Track 11:

Firstly I thought this track sounded like the Kaiser Cheifs. My friend told me this is ‘Golden Skans’ by The Klaxons. What a tune! I love this track. Really catchy intro and I can’t stop listening to it.

Golden Skans – The Klaxons

I like your friend :P

I haven't given myself the time to really listen to the full album (even if i do have it :\). This song is what got me to pay attention to them and i absolutely love it. It's different, a bit familiar but you just can't stop listening to it. I'll make the time to listen more carefully to the rest of the album.... i bet is just as good.

Track 12:

Opens with a distorted piano and a wavy synth in the background. Short female vocals with the piano chords. Then opening up with the drums and guitars. I liked this track, it has a nice uplifting feel to it and I liked the vocals.

Ferreting – Apparatjik

Jejejje, it's actually a dude singing :P

Experimental, unsigned band. If you know who Mags from Aha, Guy from Coldplay and Jonas from Mew are, you already know who 3/4 of Apparatjik are. They don't have a record out, but are constantly adding new stuff to their myspace, which is quite interesting, to say the very least. If you feel like it, they've got another song at my space, and it's pretty damn good :nice:

Track 13:

The opening reminded me of the kind of music that would go with a grassy sunny meadow. The horns added a bounce to the track and it was really nice to listen to. Another different sound; it reminded me of track 2.

Spring 2008 – Architecture in Helsinki

This is just as happy and cheerful as a song can possibly get. Being british, I thought you could use some sunshine, at least in the form of a song :nice:

Track 14:

Very funky. A mix of bass and techno accordion. Another track with foreign vocals, I’d love to know what language. The accordion sounded cool, and there was a xylophone in the background. Towards the ¾ there was a little Latin style interlude and some English vocals.

Cornman – Kinky

I feel like i flooded you with spanish-speaking bands :P

This is a mexican band that i really like, this one's from their first album which is a lot funkier than their recent work. It's fun and at times not even i can tell wth it says :P

Track 15:

“I am a vampire”. Nice way to end the mixtape. Short, but sweet track.

Vampire – Antsy Pants

This is actually from the soundtrack of "Juno" and as you could tell it's a very odd little song. Something weird and short was what i wanted to end the mixtape and somehow some kids singing "i am a vampire" not even on key was as odd and short as i could find :P

Thanks for your mixtape. I really liked some of the songs and would love to listen to more by them.

I'm glad you liked my mixtape and hope you continue enjoying it :nice:

If anyone feels like dowloading the mixtape this is the link :D

Will defo download yours Pris, it looks great!

I must get some Sigur Ros, so many people around here keep recommending them...

Well at least that's one :P

And you should definitely get some Sigur Ros

I've started to listen to Takk by Siqur Ros. What an album. I love Hoppipolla, the piano intro, then the grand sound it breaks into, and of course Sæglópur. I can't believe that this album was on my sisters CD rack and I hadn't discovered it until now. Thanks Pris.

I'm going to have to find more by the artists on your mixtape, there isn't an artist on your mixtape that I don't want to hear more of. :D

I diddn't know Guy was part of Apparatjik, it would be cool if he brought some of the more experimental sounds to Coldplay.

Briggins: I'm sorry, I haven't really had the time to look at your mixtape and give you the artists, but hopefully next week, so I hope you have a little patience :embarassed:

Urgh... I signed up for one of the spare tapes and then haven't had a chance to write about it. It's a great mix, anyway. I love it. Review coming soon. (It's the one that starts with a Killers song and then a Franz song...)

*looks back*

Indeed it is. Looks like it never got crossed off the list and so was sent out again.:embarassed::lol: Whoops.

Still a joy to listen to, though.

I'd love to get involved with one of these mixtape exchanges, I'm just afraid I won't be able to come up with enough obscure music, and the person will already know every song...
