Ooooh, you remember! :o  Well no, that wasn't my mix. :P Woot for Apocalyptica though! :wacky:

i'm not even 100% sure it was apocalyptica though!

I think i kind of ruined the whole mix by thinking "ah, so this is what Nina listens to.." all the time hahaha. Well, not really ruined but listened to the songs in a certain way..

It was yours? Wow, what a coincidence, you got my mix and i got yours

Yeah, funny how that worked, eh? :inquisitive::cool:

I thought you'd both get a kick out of that!

I did consider drawing your names again, but then I figured fate really wanted you two together :D

Well, there is one song I like a lot (#10) and I recognized it as soon as I read that part of the lyrics. :nice: I don't really listen to female vocalists though.

Well this was an odd, difficult one to do. I tried to look up stuff you might like, but it seemed like you listened to pretty much everything I do and then some, so I didn't exactly have much to add. That disqualified most of the things I had been planning to center my mix around.

There 3 options in a case like that I can think of, go weird and obscure (which doesn't always make for the best mix), go local (which I already did on my last mix), or go for a theme and not worry too much about whether or not you've heard them before. I sort of went for all three- the themes were pretty loose but guided everything, about half the tracks ended up being somewhat Canadian, and there's a couple of the more out there things (Though I tried to stay away from my little IDM habit).

There were two themes. One was that I wanted everything to have a strong female presence even if it wasn't obvious, like with Hey Rosetta! and Guillemots where the girl plays the violin or the bass.

The other was that I wanted most of the songs to have a strong string element, just to put a little twist on it all that would hopefully make it work together. Lots of violins, cellos, and double basses all over the place.

Anyway:

1. Zoe Keating - Tetrishead

I noticed you mentioned that you played cello while I was looking through old mixtape threads trying to figure out what you might like, and then I knew I had to put some Zoe Keating into the mix.

This girl is amazing. She builds up whole worlds out of nothing but a multitracked cello. Her stuff isn't for everyone necessarily, and it can be quite experimental, but it always blows my mind so I hoped it wouldn't seem too out of place. This is the piece that the two themes sort of developed from. You have to see her play live- she does everything with a loop pedal:

[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rJiybW81mXA]YouTube - Tetrishead[/ame] ooh, and I just noticed she does a Muse cover there too!

2. Belle and Sebastian - Legal Man

I threw this one in on a whim while browsing through my mp3 player. Glad it worked. :nice:

3. The Secret Machines - Lightning Blue Eyes

Yes, it's a guy. Thematically the one track that has nothing to do with anything, but I love it and I thought it fit. The Secret Machines' music has this transcendent quality to it (even if their lyrics don't) that I can't get enough of. (At least until their guitarist quit to form a dreampop group, but that's another story...)

4. KT Tunstall - The Hidden Heart

One of her finest songs, I think. She says it was inspired by the book The Giving Tree. I love how it sounds kind of quiet if you don't pay much attention to it, but if you can kind of get down into it and sort of go along with it on it's level, it explodes halfway through.

5. K-os - Crabbuckit

If you haven't been properly introduced to K-os yet, you really should be. He's the rapper that made me like rap after I swore I could never like any of it. This was a fairly big radio hit here in Canada a few years ago, and it's one of the most maddeningly catchy songs ever. I threw it in because of the big double bass. If you like this you need to check out his songs "Sunday Morning" and "The Seekwill" to start with.

6. Guillemots - Made Up Love Song #43

Yes, this was one of the bands that Nik championed. I threw it in because of the girl who plays a double bass for them. And because it's such a silly, happy song it always makes me smile.

7. Caribou - Melody Day

Caribou was one of those artists I'd been meaning to check out for a bit now. He recently won the Polaris prize for the album that this is on- it's sort of like Canada's answer to the Mercury Music prize. I like the way the rythm in this song is just a tiny bit off, so that it's almost like the sound equivalent of an optical illusion (or stargazing). Listen carefully and it's like there's not much there, but let it sit just on the edge of your conciousness any everything comes together into something different as all the layers shift. It reminded me of the first couple of times I heard some of Radiohead's stuff, before I could get my head around it.

8. Burial - In McDonalds

One of Burial's ambient pieces. He's one of my favorite artists at the moment. Close your eyes while listening to his stuff and whole cityscapes and stories will stretch out around you. The vocals at the end are a repurposed sample from an Aaliyah song, apparently.

9. Hey Rosetta! - Black Heart

The best thing to come of of Newfoundland in a while. Their live show is mindblowing. I love the way they combine harder rock with orchestral chamber pop- two of their full time members play the violin and cello. If their recorded music ever lives up to the way it sounds live... look out world. They just cleaned up at the East Coast Music Awards last night.

10. Stars - Your Ex-Lover Is Dead

Because every mix needs some Stars, and this mix needed a song in 3/4 to break up the rythm a bit. Stuck next to Hey Rosetta! because they opened for Stars when I saw them last fall and the two fit together well. It was one of the best shows of my life, actually. (Just ask Briggins- he saw it too). Their lyrics are usually amazing; check out the song "Heart" for example.

11. Santogold - L.E.S. Artistes

Hooray for Santogold. She is the awesomesauce, says I.

12. Jenn Grant - Sailing By Silverships

Halifax's sweetheart. (Well, unless you count Ellen Page...) I saw her live before her first album came out when she opened for In-Flight Safety and said "this girl is going to be huge, or at least she should be". She's well on her way to it now, nationally at least. Her second album that this song is off of just came out a week or two ago.

13. Loreena McKennit - Courtyard Lullaby

My favorite songstress ever. She started out Celtic before absorbing all sorts of world music. She can be a little weird, but I love all the textures and images and old poetry- even Shakespeare- she blends together. I wanted to end the mix on a peaceful note, and this is one of my favorite songs of hers. If you fall asleep to it, it can give some amazing dreams. "Last night you spoke of a dream/ a forest stretched to the East/ And each bird sang its song/ A unicorn joined in a feast."

Anyway, so that's the mix. It ended up very different than it started, and a lot more personal than I meant for it to be (it's actually quite typical of what I would mix together on my Zen) and a lot quieter than I meant for it to be (I guess I really was in a weird mood last week), but I'm glad there was a few things you liked.

About Hey Rosetta!; they're coming here May 1st! I can't wait to see them again. They've turned into one of my favourite bands and definitely one of the best live bands I;ve seen.

About Stars: I actually liked the first show I went to better because I was so close to teh stage and could see. Sound wise the St. Matthew's show was superior, but I just couldn't see!

Nice to see Loreena McKennit in your mix Space Cadet, she's a favourite.

Haven't listened to her in while though. Never seen her live, must be very special.

Neither has mine :(

Maybe my partner is looking for nice ways to say: absolute crap!

Well my partner didn't send me one unfortunately, but Ali kindly arranged for someone else to make one for me, which was really cool of you both! Whoever did make one for me, thanks so much! I've not had a chance to listen to it yet but I will do asap :) x

Well this was an odd, difficult one to do. I tried to look up stuff you might like, but it seemed like you listened to pretty much everything I do and then some, so I didn't exactly have much to add. That disqualified most of the things I had been planning to center my mix around.

Wow, some suprises there! First of all the first song and the fact that it's actually only one person playing is pretty amazing..gotta check more of her stuff out later!

I'm also very amazed that i didn't recognise KT Tunstall..no idea how that happened..i'm gonna listen to more of her stuff now to compare this song to them hah.

I've been planning to listen to more Belle And Sebastian for ages and maybe i'll finally do that now, their stuff seems to be quite interesting indeed.

I'm definitely going to check Hey Rosetta! out too now :nice:

Thanks for the mix, it was good and introduced me to some new great bands!

Review:

the mixtape i've received has 10 tracks. (although the unzipped folder said it has 11 files).

track1.

3:35

female voice... is a bit like down-tempo to me... sound familiar. (it says is Heart of Glass by Nouvelle Vague, i only knew about the original, that's Blondie). ;)

i liked it.

track10

3:01

is enegetic and calm at times. another female voice... at times tries to be a hard voice  the chorus is very catchy  and sound familiar to me too... i should knew it surely but i can't identify the track nor the singer. May be is called Cool to be kind. they say that a lot.

track 2

4:17

rap song, clapping, choral parts... swearing. :P my player says something as the author is Timberland, but since i'm not into that music i can't identify who they are or the song title. :\ but i would had said they are Simple Plan or some similar band. also energetic in some parts and catchy too, some electronic guitars about the end of the track. (that make me think of spanish rap song Mentiras by Tote King :o )

track 3

2:52

another female voice, catchy lyrics and music. says her mom didn't wanted her to go with some guys or something like that. ... wow a guy voice joins. i think i should be able to identify this one but i can't ... i like the trumpets, and the jazzy part. (i have to confess that at the first seconds i thought it was a Tryo song like Desolée pour Hier soir).

track 4

3:08

the player says is heartbeat by annie.

another female voice. i've never heard that singer before. some dance traces but the voice sounds mellow. a bit like Kate Ryan.

track 5

4:33

begins with piano, a male voice, ... sounds sharp to me.. well husky.

i think is a cover of an original song of another author... may be for the way he sings it sounds like a xmas song to me or something like that. goes more rythmical now, another voice joins, now sounds like folk... like irish folk or something... so it makes me think it's sung by some american singers. yep definitelly must be a xmas song...

again i have the feeling i should knew that song but i don't know it. :embarassed:

track 6

4:08

my player says is Do it again by the chemical brothers.

ok the music sounds like TCB to me, but surely i couldn't had identified the song.

"Oh my god what have i done? do it again" as their Galvanize song it ends with some arabic music style to me. :)

track 7

3:38

another energetic song  male voice. now is a due... mm may be is the last shadow puppets? ... it sounds like Alex Turner there but don't sound like the Monkeys really. seems a bit like alt-country. wait wait is a radio performance...

track 8

1:46

my player says is sunshine on my window by spiderbait

another female voice... lol is crazy, goes from very mellow and calm to very rocky part :P hehe.

track 9

2:54

my player says is: arctic monkeys' mardy bum.

and right it is... is the only song (and first track) that i can had identified beign honest. :P

 so well done to the mix maker :) i got to discover some new music to me, i liked it, good changes from slower to rocker songs and good male-female mixture too. (i don't use to like female voices :uhoh: ) generally has actual music, no instrumental tracks.

(the only bands i already knew were: Nouvelle Vague/Blondie; The Chemical Brothers, Arctic Monkeys).

---

and the mixtape i did hadn't been posted yet, so i don't know if wait, so to post the download link or not. :\

Track 1: It begins with an electric guitar and then a riff that is played throught all over the song. The rythm and the lead guitar was sort of pop, so the voice, with a catchy chorus. It was ok.

Track 2: Same stlye as the first, just that this time, there is more variety, more decent guitar solo, and the intro with a piano and the usual instruments, the piano plays only during the chorus and a different outro with falsetto and background voices backing up the lead singer, well it was fine.

Track 3: THere is not track 3, neither 8 or 12; I supposed you made a mistake or had to delete songs but nah nevermind

Track 4: Beggining with a harmonica, this is surely a Dave Matthews Band song, with that reggae-rock or coffee rock style. Not much my thing

Track 5: how I wish, how I wish you were here!! Sorry couldn't help singing to this awesome song, Wish you were here by Pink FLoyd, what can I say about it? MOst of us love this classic.

Track 6: Fake Plastic Trees by Radiohead. Amazing and beautiful song. That track 5 and 6 follow up was great and strong.

Track 7: Well it begins with some like reversed chords and electronic stuff, then a piano do some little arrangements, I'm sure it's a post rock or art rock song but not exactly, amazing guitar chords enter, lead guitar with arpeggios that fit perfectly the song, then drums and bass kick in, and little electronic sounds. Then things go louder when electric guitar goes heavier and the keyboard/electronic organ adds a very catchy riff. The singer has a pleasant voice too. Great song, I can't wait to know the name and the artist. I loved this one.

Track 9: Keane, I don't like them much, but this song wasn't bad at all

Track 10: A jazz song, with the bass and the drums, you know cymbal based rythm with nice bass and some tubs and trompets. Yeah nice work, but at 6:54 it becomes boring and repetitive.

Track 11: mmm, how should I define this song? It's different, it's like a mix of jazz and rock, the singer has style, nice bass, drums and guitar, but what make this song special is that rythm voices they do, you know like those on jazz, I loved this one, nice guitar solo and specialy the outro rocking out. I'm eager to know this one too.

Track 13: Begginin with lovely electric guitar arpeggios, very lovely guitars, then the drums and bass join in the catchy chorus with those oooohs. I suppose the song is named America. Very good song.

Track 14: Good way to end. An acoustic guitar based song with some bass and drums of course and organs on the bridge. And it ends soft with beautiful strings and acoustic guitar arpeggios.

.....

Ok, at first I thought it was going to be just a sort of café playlist, like the music they play on Starbucks, but after some songs I discoverd it was rather a delectable mixtape with enjoyable songs :)

  • Author

Delectable?!!

That's a lovely word!

Hope your partner posts the link so everyone can listen...

oh well I should have said something else :P, well, the truth is that I enjoyed the songs, except for the 5 I said :P

  • Author

I wasn't being cheeky, I honestly read your review aqnd thought "delectable - what a great word" :)

Ricardo - I'm glad you enjoyed my mix. I'm sorry my review is taking a while, the joys of exam coursework are sapping my time.

Edit: Writing review now. ;)

Well, first thing first: thank you to my partner for this lovely mix! There's a lot of accoustic guitar on it and I would say it's overall a 'quiet' mix. It's really a nice discovery for me cause I didn't know any of the songs (except for one)! So it was a pleasure to hear this ^^

Track 1: wow it's beginning well!! I'm treated with a soft rock song with some indian vibe (is this a cythar??). I like the man's voice, kinda sound like the singer of Fleet Foxes. Really like this one! The cythar (?) parts are addicting. Great opener!

Track 2: accoustic guitar and man singing. A nice folk song.I don't think it's an old song but it has this 70's-flower power vibe ^^ Like it, makes me wanna run and go woodstock XD

Track 3: again, a dominant guitar song at the beginning, followed by horns and a great drum beat...An accordéon at the end, remind me of my dear country, feels like they ended playing the song at the top of Montmartre ^^ I'm not fan of this one but it remains a nice listen.

Track 4: After two soft tracks, here's an upbeat one to lift the mood! Don't know the band (well, I kinda suck till now XD), it's a duet man/woman. Their voices melt well together. I love the beat of this song, it's really catchy, makes me wanna dance!! Love this!

Track 5: again, accoustic guitar with a woman singing. She has a beautiful voice. This song has a warm feeling. It's really a lovely song!

Track 6: mainly accoustic guitar+man singing at first, then other instruments joins in, gets depth to the song and makes it really attrativ. Don't know the guy but he has a nice voice. I'm sure this song would fit well in an movie soundtrack ^^ Like it.

Track 7: At least, a song that I KNOW!!! I was speaking of Fleet foxes earlier, here they come!!! It's 'ragged wood', my favorite on their album!!! How did you know this XD?!! Are you a mind reader?! Love all in this song, just pure greatness!

Track 8: accoustic guitar song with a woman, becomes more upbeat near the end. Her voice reminds me of Bjork. Good song but I'm not totally diggin it.

Track 9: Didn't expect this one...some strange electroish intro (synth??), then two male voices (maybe more), hand clapping in the background, drums. I would call this 'experimental' but not in a bad way. I liked the 'water' sound at the end, funny!

Track 10: a kinda upbeat song. Man is singing, and again, I don't know why, I feel like I'm in the 70's ^^ I'm sure it's not an oldie but that's just the feeling of it. Like the drum loop on that one. This song goes crescendo, like this too, it's make it kinda epic. Good song!

Track 11: Remix of the 'Bolero' of Ravel if I'm not mistaken. But it's sounds also like 'Carmen'...Dunno by whom it's done but it's kinda nice to hear this music piece heard sooo often this way ^^

Track 12: Man's voice driven by a great drum loop and violins *w*. The bass line drives the song nicely. I would say that it's a voice a 'mature' man in his 40 (??), which makes the song kinda deep. It has a nice vibe through it and the violins make takes it to another level. Great ending song ^^ Again, could fit well in a movie soundtrack!

Now I can't wait to discover who those mysterious artists are!

It was mine :nice: I'm very glad you liked it actually since I had no idea what sort of music you were into. And somehow most of the songs on the mixtape were a gamble but I did stick to a certain theme, which you've noticed to be a quite, sort of indie one. But you did like it, yay! :D

Tracklist:

1. Andrew Bird - Fake Palindromes

Andrew Bird is one amazing singer. His songs are just a bliss to listen to. And this song, which you seemed to've enjoyed quite a bit :D is my very first favourite, but however his new album Noble Beast (which you must get!) is the one that was able to get me into him but now that I listen to his other album The Mysterious Production of Eggs, which this song is taken from, I see it just as beautiful and lovely. Regarding the song btw, I think it's Violin rather than Cythar, never occured to me that it could be Cythar actually. But I don't know if the Cythar could be played this fast..

2. Neutral Milk Hotel - In the Aeroplane Over the Sea

The same-titled album is one true masterpiece. Don't know what else to say about it as its genre of music is pretty clear with this song but i definitely, definitely recommend it.

3. Beirut - Elephant Gun

Beirut is a band I fell in love with from my first listen. Most of their songs are folk-indie, accompanied with any sort of instrument you could imagine; horns, accordions, violins, ukuleles, cellos etc. I am a bit surprised you didn't enjoy this that much, but you might be not that into this sort of music, which I could understand. Although, if you ever fell in love with this in the time to come, don't be hesitant to download their albums :D which are so far: Gulag Orkestar and The Flying Club Cup.

4. Los Campesinos! - Death to Los Campesinos!

I recently got into this band and I must say they are one cheerful and very danceable band :D I'm very glad you liked them as well. And they're not a duet, actually. They are one big band, 7 members to be exact. Try downloading their debut album: Hold on Now, Youngster...

5. Laura Marling - Ghosts

Quite a talented new singer with such a beautiful voice. And she is only 18! Which is quite amazing in itself. Her debut album is called: Alas, I Cannot Swim.

6. Sondre Lerche - Two Way Monologue

I've downloaded his same-titled album recently for I was curious about his music. He is quite good. I could describe him as an easy listen. Didn't turn into a fan yet or anything. But what made me choose this song is that I felt it fits well with the other songs, also it has that poppish feel that makes people enjoy it, whatever the kind of music they are into.

7. Fleet Foxes - Ragged Wood

I am one lucky gal with this one :D I was a bit torn between this or He Doesn't Know Why but eventually I settled with this one. Very glad it turned out to be your favourite!

8. Florence and The Machine - Girl With One Eye

I just LOVE this song. They don't have an album out yet, only randomly scattered songs on the internet. I just quite enjoy this soulful vibe to her voice and on second thought it does sound a bit familiar to Bjork's voice! The lyrics in this song are bit on the freaky side, I must admit :D Still though, I do enjoy it very much. Could they be the reason for not liking it?

9. Animal Collective - My Girls

The only reason I used this song in my mixtape is seeing MGMT on the tracklist of your mixtape hehe. I really like this song, should probably listen to the whole album again, actually. But you should try and download it, it's called: Merriweather Post Pavilion.

10. British Sea Power - Waving Flags

Great, great rock band. I just love them. This song is such a brilliant song too. Epic, indeed, as you said yourself. Glad you enjoyed it!

11. Zbigniew Preisner - Bolero, Trailer for "Red" Film

This song is from the soundtrack of Trois Couleurs: Bleu, one of my favourite films. It sort of blends well with the next song so I thought it'd be a nice way to end the mixtape

12. Elbow - One Day Like This

Elbow are such a great band. And their album The Seldom Seen Kid, which this song is from, is quite a good one. I literally enjoyed every song on it. And I'm very glad you thought it was a great ending song, I was hoping you'd notice :D

And that's it. I say again, I'm very glad you enjoyed it and I just hope I've been able to introduce you to bands that might become a favourite of yours later one

Ok, so after listening very carefully to all 14 tracks of my mixtape, here goes the review :D

Track1

Starts off with a sort of classical tune that after 10 seconds converts into a hip hoppy song. Not my kind of music, but this is so upbeat that I kinda like it :P It’s a great song to start the mix.

Track2

This is by far my favorite track. Since the very first listen I completely LOVED IT. The drums all over the place, the guitars, the odd singing and the beat are fantastic and it makes me wanna jump around like a loon  This is something I could listen to every single day :D

Track3

Red Hot Chili Peppers. Rockish. I’m not a big fan of their music, but I like a few of their songs. For some reason this song at first reminded me of Audioslave minus Chris Cornell’s vocals :P

Track4

Mwahahha, The Racounters “Steady as she goes”. I was gonna add this song to my mix tape, but the file was damaged so I added another one in it’s place :P Love it :D

Track5

Very calm and mellow instrumental. Reminded me of the soundtrack to the lord of the rings or something like that :nice:

Track6

Acoustic guitars. Girl on vocals. There’s a folky vibe to this song. Very soothing, sounds like something I’d have in the background while reading a book.

Track7

Incredibly calm song, barely there piano and drums. The voices of these dudes take over the song completely. It sounds almost… old. Like one of those really mellow songs that are timeless. I like it :nice:

Track8

This one’s interesting. Completely different to the rest of the mix. The vocals at first are less clear, that changes as the song evolves. It goes from a rock-ish vibe to completely mellow by the half of the song, I probably would’ve found it annoying by that point but the guitar playing is magnificent. Then it goes back up. Even though it’s a long track it doesn’t gets boring.

Track9

It starts off with acoustic guitars, almost latin sounding. Then the singing starts and I get very confused :P At first I thought it was portuguese, but now I don’t know  It sounds…. Almost like those greek wedding songs :D Completely insane, happy, fast, foreign yet something I can relate!! I didn’t understand a word, but I really liked it :D

Track10

Coldplay’s Postcards From Far Away :wacky:

Track11

Back to the rock side of things. Great guitar riff and I really like this man’s voice. Somehow I feel like I’ve heard this before, yet I can’t put my finger on it

It’s loud and out of the sudden it’s done. Gotta know who’s from ‘cause I really liked it :nice:

Track12

Another one that sounds familiar. Almost like Dave Grohl’s voice, but not quite. Rock&roll with the tiniest hint of country at some parts… just enough so it keeps sounding completely cool. Makes me wanna clap along to the chorus. Really catchy

Track13

Ahh, man i adore this song!!! Foo Fighters “The Pretender”. Gotta love it *headbangs* :D

Track14

Green Day’s “Time of your life”. This brought me back to when I liked GD. I think I’ll always love this song. :nice:

There it is. I'm really glad i got to be a part of this proyect, lot's of interesting music there!!!

Can't wait to get the actual track listing and see who the hell i've been listening to :D

2. Neutral Milk Hotel - In the Aeroplane Over the Sea

The same-titled album is one true masterpiece. Don't know what else to say about it as its genre of music is pretty clear with this song but i definitely, definitely recommend it.

wow, i'm glad you included this song! one of my favorite songs ever! and the album is excellent!

That's my mix :). I tried to find out what kind of music you listen to but I failed (I'm a terrible researcher), so I decided to give you some of the music I listen to and hope for the best.

I wanted it to start and end with rock (that's where it always starts and ends for me) and have a more calm, meditative part in the middle. And I think I have a couple of surprises for you.

1. Lazee - Rock Away

Swedish rapper with a quite different style, a mix of hip hop, rock and house. This is his first single and I just love how he both have the bad boy image and make fun of it.

A really cool and funny guy. And he mentions Red Hot Chili Peppers, gotta love him!

2. !!! - All My Heroes Are Weirdos

American dance-punk band, if it's even possible to label them. I'm so glad you like it! I saw them in a small rock club and it was absolutely amazing. Everything was all over the place and I did jump around like a loon :D It's guitar, bass, drums, horns, keys... and "various electronic devices". A great band!

To find them, if you want to know more, you sometimes need to enter chk chk chk in stead of !!!

3. RHCP - Readymade

I had to include Red Hot Chili Peppers in my mix, they are my first love. I chose one of their heavier, rockier songs, my second favourite off their latest album, the guitar solo is brilliant.

4. The Raconteurs - Steady As She Goes

You thought about adding them too! Funny.

5. Lord Of The Rings Symphony - Concerning Hobbits

You were so right, it is the LOTR soundtrack and it represents both my interest in classical music and also the books and movies. The composer Howard Shore conducted our Royal Philharmonics in this symphony and it was certainly a night to remember.

6. Hellsongs - Run To The Hills

This might surprise you: it's an Iron Maiden cover. A Swedish lounge metal band, the first and possibly only. This song is from their album Hymns In The Key Of 666.

Yes, I listen to some metal too (seeing Metallica this weekend) and I love these soft covers, sometimes even more than the originals. Hellsongs version of Breaking The Law beats Judas Priest's but don't tell the metalheads I said that ;)

7. Antony & The Johnsons - You Are My Sister

You described it beautifully. It is music beyond time and borders and so is Antony Hegarty, the singer, I find his voice mesmerising. I also love the cello. A fantastic song for a sister, I love the lyrics.

I've never managed to get tickets to see them live, but one day I will. I have to. I haven't got around to listen to their new album yet, but I heard it's very good.

8. John Frusciante - Unreachable

A great guitarist and a multi-talented artist. I like some of his solo work, but not all of it. His new album though is fantastic, truly original.

He is RHCP's guitarist, so the great solo in track 3 is his, but his solo work is quite different from their styles.

9. Kungers - Måndagströst

I had to give you something in Swedish :D and I thought maybe you could relate to this. I'm so glad you like it, it's a local band that deserves to be more well-known than they are.

They call their music folkpunk, a fantastic live band. Måndagströst means Monday solace and that's exactly what Kungers are to me. Too bad you can't understand the lyrics, they're so funny and clever.

10. Coldplay - Postcards From Far Away

I know we have that in common, I sent a postcard too and I worked on my mix those crazy days when we got the video. I didn't spot my card but yours were there and they are great!

11. Coldplay - 1.36

Yeah, I'm sure you've heard it before  I had trouble finding a song that could fit in between no 10 and 12 and I was so glad when I found this little gem.

If I'm correct, it's The Scientist b-side. I think it's great and I wouldn't mind hearing more of this side of Coldplay.

12. The Soundtrack of Our Lives - Thrill Me

Another Swedish band, more well-known and with a charismatic singer. Often described as a combination of The Who, The Kinks and Pink Floyd, maybe that's why they sound familiar. This song is maybe not their most typical, they're often more psychedelic.

13. Foo Fighters - The Pretender

Not the most original choice, but it had to be there. Yup, it's my headbanging song too :D

14. Green Day - Good Riddance (Time Of Your Life)

I was a bit nervous about sending my mix, I thought that you might hate it so I ended it with "good riddance" so you wouldn't have to say it :D

I still like GD and I too will always love this song.

That's it. I'm so glad you found some new and old good and interesting songs.

I apologize for not converting the songs. I just assumed they all were mp3's and didn't realize til it was too late and I had already sent you the link. I'm sorry.

Huge thanks to Alison for organizing this round. Well done!
