Weeee!!

Thanks, i'll definitely try and get some albums of a few of the artists in your mix!!! :D

Oh man, this goes to show you that i've watched LOTR waay too many times... :disappointed:

i don't even have the soundtrack yet i recognized one of the songs :P

And wanna hear something funny??

11. Coldplay - 1.36

Yeah, I'm sure you've heard it before  I had trouble finding a song that could fit in between no 10 and 12 and I was so glad when I found this little gem.

If I'm correct it's The Scientist b-side. I think it's great and I wouldn't mind hearing more of this side of Coldplay.

I had never heard that song!!!

I tried to get it a while ago, but couldn't find it so i let it go..... Chris' voice and the overall sound is so different, no wonder i didn't recognized it :P

Really?! Funny! :D

Not strange at all you didn't recognize it, it's very different. I could never have guessed it was Coldplay.

My tape hasn't been reviewed yet :(

Maybe putting an hour and a half of classical music scared him/her away

My mix has gone with me everywhere... To work, in the car, up the mountain, to lunch, its been played in nearly every room in my house and in many different environments... Different songs take on a whole new meaning when played in the car if you ask me. I love a good road mix. While I wouldnt say my mix is perfect for that long drive its as varried as the view seen along the way. I like it.

Track 1 Slide. I loved this song when it was released and kept loving it for a while, as did many folks. A good opener after youve heard the whole mix.

Track 2 Are they French? Has kind of a Euro-rap-ska vibe to it. Interesting listen. Not something I would have ever chose to listen to. Love the mixtape exchange

Track 3 LOVE THIS! Georgeous voice, vibe, and lyrics... Romantic and timeless

Track 4 Reminds me of Joy Division. Great guitars!

Track 5 Not what I thought it was going to be when I first heard the drum beat. Female vocal is more like a spoken word performance... Organs and keyboards are rather sinister. I imagine this in a vampire movie soundtrack. Goth is not really my cup of tea... But Whats A Guy To Do?

Track 6 Love the opening guitar riff! On headphones it travels from ear to ear. At first it seems like its going to break into an all out speed metal jam until the viola or violin introduces itself amongst the rock. Instrumentals always leave me wanting more though.

Track 7 Is in MP4 format so I have to play it on the VLC player. Another instrumental. I like this one better than track six. Still I always like to hear the vocal instument so much... I miss it when it isnt there.

Track 8 This is right up my alley! Its like something I would purchase on my own. Who knows I may already own it. I like this song the best out of them all. It has an Elliot Smith. Sufjan Stephens vibe that I like very much. The lyrics are great. A definate keeper!!! Must know who, what and where.....

Track 9 A fantastic throw back! The Girl From Iponeema <----- spelling? All wrong I know. This is a great performance from Frank.

Track 10 Another LEGEND! Billie is truely one of a kind! I saw a wonderful play in Chicago based on her life and Ive always been a fan of her music.

Track 11 Another Joy Divison/Bahaaus eerie 80s ditty. Im sure Ive heard this before and I absolutly love it here! Great tune excellent music! Love the bass and guitar parts and how they respond to each other. 2nd favorite track on the mix!

Track 12 Live track LA LA LA LA LA LA LA LA Festive and fun ending to a mix that only gets better as it goes along.

Your choices were a mixture of genres and vibes, I very much appreciated that. As the mix goes on I start liking what you have created more and more. I hope it was worth the wait for the review. It was worth the wait for the mix for sure. Thank you! I will keep it and listen to it again for sure.

Jeff

So do we un-reviewed people just post our tracklists anyway?

I don't think so.

I really wanna read my review though.

I will post my review tonight!

Just waiting for the tracklist on my mixtape. I really want to know who several of the artist are...

  • Author

If those of you who are still waiting for reviews could hold on a couple of days, I'll check through the thread and then mail the recipients and see where their reviews are...

It was mine :nice: I'm very glad you liked it actually since I had no idea what sort of music you were into. And somehow most of the songs on the mixtape were a gamble but I did stick to a certain theme, which you've noticed to be a quite, sort of indie one. But you did like it, yay! :D

Hi ^^

Thx again for the mix, I took a little time to answer you cause I wanted to check those artists now that I have their name!!

Tracklist:

1. Andrew Bird - Fake Palindromes

I checked him out cause I'm realling diggin' this song (too addictiv :D ). And I found out that I red something about him on a paper magazine (I recongnized the cover of his last album). I listen to the tracks on their myspace and it's really good!! He'll tour in France but he'll pass near my home the day I'm already going seing another artist elsewhere :/

Anyway, thx to introducing him to me!

3. Beirut - Elephant Gun

I only knew their song called 'Nantes' (no, it had nothing to do with the fact it's a french city XD). This one is good.

4. Los Campesinos! - Death to Los Campesinos!

I recently got into this band and I must say they are one cheerful and very danceable band :D I'm very glad you liked them as well. And they're not a duet, actually. They are one big band, 7 members to be exact. Try downloading their debut album: Hold on Now, Youngster...

7 members?!! I would have never guess!

9. Animal Collective - My Girls

The only reason I used this song in my mixtape is seeing MGMT on the tracklist of your mixtape hehe. I really like this song, should probably listen to the whole album again, actually. But you should try and download it, it's called: Merriweather Post Pavilion.

I definitively do! This is 'beautifully weird', I'm totally diggin' that kind of stuff ^^

10. British Sea Power - Waving Flags

Great, great rock band. I just love them. This song is such a brilliant song too. Epic, indeed, as you said yourself. Glad you enjoyed it!

Again, I'll try to get their stuff!!

12. Elbow - One Day Like This

Elbow are such a great band. And their album The Seldom Seen Kid, which this song is from, is quite a good one. I literally enjoyed every song on it. And I'm very glad you thought it was a great ending song, I was hoping you'd notice :D

So this was Elbow?!!!! I know the band by name (and face XD) but I've never really listen carefully to their outside of the usual radio listenning ^^

Anyway, thx for all those great discoveries!!!!

Hey guys, can I join this game? I'd love to make a mixtape for someone...

I'm sure we'll do another exchange sometime in the not so distant future.

p.s. sorry I haven't posted a review yet, I will get around to it I promise!

If those of you who are still waiting for reviews could hold on a couple of days, I'll check through the thread and then mail the recipients and see where their reviews are...

ok, but not my receiver has posted a review... and nobody has commented on the review i've posted, so i guess:

a. they didn't saw it (or didn't liked that review :worried: )

b. they didn't logged on the board since a long while :uhoh:

c. mine is from a misterious sender we don't know :o ( :p )

Okay, it took me some time, but here is my review! :)

Nr. 1

The first time I heard this song, I didn’t really know what to think of it..but after the 2nd time I think it’s great!! I don’t really know how to describe it, but it seems like a soundtrack for some movie to me! I’m very curious to what this is. Even my father likes this one, hihi! He heard this song and wants to hear it every day, telling me “have you finished your review already? Because I want to know what this is!” :P And so do I! :D

Nr.2

Piano and a strange sound (guitars?) in the background which reminds me slightly of Sigur Rós in the beginning. The voice of the singer is quite unusual, because he sings in a sort of ‘screaming’ way, but I like it! I really like this song too, especially because it’s alternating, especially near the end, when the woman’s voice, and later the children, comes in. I wonder what artist this is! “Do you care about this, more than anyone else?” Wauw, this is beautiful!

Nr.3

Ahh, this song..it’s magical! I don’t know what it is, but the first time I heard it, I was immediately in a sort of trance.. Sounds strange maybe, but I think this is really really great! It gives me Goosebumps! And the strange thing is, that the song seems to have this effect on everybody. Everybody being my parents here! They heard it and they loved it too! It doesn’t happen a lot that a song strikes you like this with the first time. I like the voice of the singer, although it seems quite familiar.. and I love the short silence around 3.36, and then *bam!* here we go again! Really good! Now pleaaaase tell me what it is! :P (Again, my dad wants to know what this is too, hihi!)

Nr.4

Okay, this song is slightly different than the rest until now. Guitar and a violin comes in, pretty slow song, woman singing. Hmm, I don’t really know what to think of this song. I don’t dislike it, but I don’t find it very special either. Just a nice song for in the background I guess.

Nr.5

The song starts with clapping hands, cheerful! “Farewell my black balloon!” I like this song, it’s quite repetitive in a way, but it’s nice.

Nr.6

This beginning sounds familiar, although I’m sure I haven’t heard this song before. Pretty uncommon voice, I like it. The song is ‘just nice’, but then after 3 minutes it builds up to something ‘harder’, I like this!

Nr.7

Piano..and this voice! In the beginning it’s a little bit like David Bowie, although sometimes it slightly reminds me of Eddie Vedder too. But I like his voice! This song is beautiful, I like it very much! I would like to hear more of this artist.

Nr.8

Yaaay, an accent! I love accents in English! :D This is some Scottish or Irish accent I guess? I like it hihi! The song is great too, it builds up to a great climax! I wonder what this is.. :)

Nr.9

When this song starts I’m not sure if I will like it, the first “singing” part is not really my style I guess. But then it continues and the actual singing starts and it’s not that bad at all. Actually this is a pretty relaxing song, nice to listen to.

Nr.10

When I first heard the trumpets starting I was thinking: Beirut! Then the rest of the music comes in and I’m thinking: yeah..this must be Beirut! Zach starts singing and it’s clear that this is indeed Beirut. (Oooh, wouldn’t I feel stupid now when it turns out to be something else?) I really like Beirut, although I only have The Flying Club Cup. I still have to give a listen to his first album, and now is a good opportunity. Is this song from his first album, or from some EP?

Nr.11: White Lies – A Place To Hide

White Lies! Nice band! I’ve seen them a month ago in a CD store here in Holland, where they gave a performance for free. It was very nice, they are good. I like his voice, he can sing both high and low very good!

Nr.12

This intro sounds quite familiar to me, but when the song continues I discover I haven’t heard it before. I’m not sure what to think of this song, I like it, it’s just nice, but I don’t think I would want to listen to a whole album of this artist. I’m not very fond of the voice.

Nr.13

Quite long intro which builds up slowly. This sound makes me think a little bit about Arcade Fire, with a couple of voices singing together and all. I’m wondering what the rest of an album of this artist would be like.

Nr.14

This song is instrumental, it starts pretty slowly but builds up into a nice tempo, with trumpets and guitars. I like this song.

Nr.15: The Arcade Fire - Lenin

And there they are..the real, the one and only Arcade Fire! Yay! This is Lenin! Arcade Fire is one of my “Great Four” as I call them in my head, my most favorite bands. (+Coldplay, Muse, Sigur Rós) So this is a perfect end to a very nice mixtape!

I really enjoyed this mixtape, and there were only just two songs that I already knew, so great job! I’m most interested in songs 1 and 3, and 7 and 8! Especially 1 and 3 are very good!

So thank you mixtaper, for sending me a great mixtape!:)

[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A1A4S3L2jis]YouTube - Andrew Bird: Fake Palindromes (Live at Coachella)[/ame]

Bauk,

Wow, I didn't expect this nice review! I'm glad that you love several songs here. My primary consideration is whether you will like the songs on the first listen, enough to sustain interest in the mixtape as a whole. I had the impression that I quite succeeded in that aspect!

Thank you. This truly made my day!

1. Daniel Licht - Escalation

You're correct in saying that this is from a soundtrack. This is from a great TV show called "Dexter". Dexter is the most likable serial killer I've ever watched. Everything about that show is perfect, including the music. Since the show is set in Miami, the album also includes nice Latin beats. However, the real gems are from Mr. Licht himself. The musical score is sometimes weird, scary, tender, mysterious but always interesting. Escalation is my favorite from the album. I'm sure you and your father will love listening to the rest of the songs from the soundtrack as much as I do!

2. A Whisper in the Noise - As the Bluebird Sings

This is a very unique song, vocals, arrangement, everything. Although it's over 5 minutes long, I really enjoy listening to it. Maybe its because of its contrasting element, edginess and angst on one hand, and tenderness on the other.

Now pleaaaase tell me what it is! :P (Again, my dad wants to know what this is too, hihi!)

3. Get Well Soon - Dear Temptest-Tost, Dear Weakened

I had reservations in including this one because it's more than 6 minutes long. I wonder if you could stand listening to the entire song and not tempted to skip over the track. The vocals comes only about halfway through the song and the listener might miss the better parts. However, I'm very happy that this turned out to be one of your favorites! It's really an epic number from a German band that I could not say anything negative about. I hope you get to listen to its great album, Rest Now Weary Head. This song is from the EP Songs Against the Glaciation, though.

Okay, this song is slightly different than the rest until now. Guitar and a violin comes in, pretty slow song, woman singing. Hmm, I don’t really know what to think of this song. I don’t dislike it, but I don’t find it very special either. Just a nice song for in the background I guess.

4. Picastro - Hortur

Picastro is a relatively unknown Canadian band. I like this one because Owen Pallett (Final Fantasy) used to be member of this group. For me the vocals exudes melancholy, but the melody is quite vibrant.

The song starts with clapping hands, cheerful! “Farewell my black balloon!” I like this song, it’s quite repetitive in a way, but it’s nice.

5. The Kills - Black Balloon

One could remember this song for the hand claps. The Kills is a definitely a cool band. It is often compared to Yeah Yeah Yeahs, but you now know which band I'm partial to. Jamie Hince, the guitarist, also sings (but not in this one) and I tend to love his voice more than Alison's. But this one is magical and haunting! Alison sometimes reminds me a bit of Shirley Manson of Garbage.

This beginning sounds familiar, although I’m sure I haven’t heard this song before. Pretty uncommon voice, I like it. The song is ‘just nice’, but then after 3 minutes it builds up to something ‘harder’, I like this!

6. Handsome Furs - Handsome Furs Hate This City

Another wonderful band from Canada! The singer here is Dan Boeckner of Wolf Parade (the singer in song no. 7 is also from Wolf Parade). This is sort of a side project conceived by Dan and his wife, Alexei. What I like about this band is that it tries not to sound anything like Wolf Parade, using drum machines, less guitars and droning sounds.

Piano..and this voice! In the beginning it’s a little bit like David Bowie, although sometimes it slightly reminds me of Eddie Vedder too. But I like his voice! This song is beautiful, I like it very much! I would like to hear more of this artist.

7. Sunset Rubdown - Us Ones in Between

I'm really happy that you like this one. This is a personal favorite too. As I said previously, Spencer Krug is also a member of Wolf Parade and he's very visible in the indie music scene. His vocals is one most distinct I've ever heard from just about anybody. I suggest that you listen to the two Sunset Rubdown albums, Random Spirit Lover and Shut Up! I Am Dreaming. Those are the most unique records you will ever hear!

Yaaay, an accent! I love accents in English! :D This is some Scottish or Irish accent I guess? I like it hihi! The song is great too, it builds up to a great climax! I wonder what this is.. :)

8. The Twilight Sad - That Summer, At Home I Had Become the Invisible Boy

Don't you just love the accent and the wall of sound? The Twilight Sad is a Scottish band. This band ought to be more popular than the much hyped Glasvegas. The album Fourteen Autumns and Fifteen Winters is phenomenal. You should listen to it as well!

When this song starts I’m not sure if I will like it, the first “singing” part is not really my style I guess. But then it continues and the actual singing starts and it’s not that bad at all. Actually this is a pretty relaxing song, nice to listen to.

9. Primitive Radio Gods - Standing Outside A Broken Phone Booth With Money in My Hand

I remember this was a huge hit way back in 1996. It uses B.B. King's vocals (I've been downhearted, baby, ever since the day we've met). I simply love the lyrics, makes me think every time! Sadly, Primitive Radio Gods is a one-hit wonder band.

10. Beirut - The Akara

Just about anyone knows Zach Condon! Beirut is quite a distinct band! It's my most favorite group of all time, so it's fitting to include one Beirut song in the mix! This is from the new EP March of the Zapotec/Holland.

White Lies – A Place To Hide

White Lies! Nice band! I’ve seen them a month ago in a CD store here in Holland, where they gave a performance for free. It was very nice, they are good. I like his voice, he can sing both high and low very good!

11. White Lies - A Place to Hide

Spot on! White Lies is full of potential. Reminds me a bit of Editors, The Killers and Joy Division!

This intro sounds quite familiar to me, but when the song continues I discover I haven’t heard it before. I’m not sure what to think of this song, I like it, it’s just nice, but I don’t think I would want to listen to a whole album of this artist. I’m not very fond of the voice.

12. Taken by Cars - Logistical Nightmare

This is a Filipino band (I'm from the Philippines) and this is one is the closest to my heart.

Quite long intro which builds up slowly. This sound makes me think a little bit about Arcade Fire, with a couple of voices singing together and all. I’m wondering what the rest of an album of this artist would be like.

13. Slaraffenland - I'm A Machine

I plainly love the style of singing here. I didn't enjoy the band's album entirely, but this song is amazing. This is from the Sunshine EP.

This song is instrumental, it starts pretty slowly but builds up into a nice tempo, with trumpets and guitars. I like this song.

14. This Town Needs Guns - Elk

The only instrumental song from the Animals album. This Town Needs Guns is classified as a math-rock band, whatever that means. The album is really unique as the song titles include Dog, Chinchilla, Crocodile, Quetzal, Pig, Rabbit, Badger, Baboon, among others.

The Arcade Fire - Lenin

And there they are..the real, the one and only Arcade Fire! Yay! This is Lenin! Arcade Fire is one of my “Great Four” as I call them in my head, my most favorite bands. (+Coldplay, Muse, Sigur Rós) So this is a perfect end to a very nice mixtape!

15. Arcade Fire - Lenin

I love the energy in this one! I'm glad that Arcade Fire is one of your top bands. What a way to close the mix! The first track is sort of dark, melancholic, so I chose a very upbeat song for the closer.

I really like my mixtape too. I hope you guys will also like it!

The Twilight Sad! Awesome.

I'd like to listen to it actually, the mixtape, I mean. Quite a few bands I don't know on there..

Thanks for the quick response No-Wow!(I'm sorry, I don't know your real name ;) )

It's very funny/nice to see what everything is! But I will post a more detailed reaction to this later, I don't have much time now sorry :)

Hi ^^
