How to rev up the Palace crowd for Coldplay

bilde?Site=AD&Date=20090322&Category=ART&ArtNo=218086961&Ref=AR&MaxW=300

Mercury Rev, fronted by Jonathan Donahue, will support Coldplay at the Emirates Palace on Saturday.

Great news! Mercury Rev are playing in Abu Dhabi. The downside is that it costs Dh300 and if you don’t leave as soon as they’ve finished, you might get some Coldplay on you. I joke, I joke. Yet for many, ragging on Chris Martin and chums is no laughing matter. From all the pained, po-faced column inches proclaiming this popular North London outfit to be, in the words of The New York Times’s Jon Pareles, “the most insufferable band of the decade”, you’d think they spent their days feasting on endangered species. Oh, Coldplay’s flaws are obvious enough: the simpering, samey songs, the worthiness, the smugness of the Martin ménage, etc. And yet none of this detracts from their talent: they write memorable tunes with a chilly, contemporary mood. Whenever Martin’s melodies have shown up without him attached, the effects have been perfectly pleasant. Who can deny the charm of Jamelia’s See It in a Boy’s Eyes? Or of Jay-Z’s Beach Chair? Thus history, furnishing a control test, refutes the sceptic. Besides, as Nietzsche once advised, “battle not with monsters lest you become a monster”. It’s a terrible thing when the hipper-than-thou haters start seeming less fun than Chris Martin himself.

In any case such admonitions may be unnecessary, for who can hate in the presence of Mercury Rev, surely the closest thing the world of sweeping indie rock possesses to an anti-Coldplay? Where the latter are cold, modern and sensible, the Rev trade in a sort of wayward, Tiffany-glass warmth. Even on their latest album, Snowflake Midnight, in which the band branches out into electronic textures and borrows a few shock tactics from their spiritual successors Animal Collective, the mood is as swooning and starry-eyed as ever. Rev fans tend to be die-hards, too, which is another reason why they make an intriguing choice of support for Coldplay. The Emirates Palace may find itself hosting to two very different tribes on Saturday. Somehow, I’d be surprised if it came to blows.

The Bolshoi ballet is coming to the Abu Dhabi Music and Arts Festival this week with a gala performance of excerpts from Minkus, Tchaikovsky, Driges and others, followed a couple of days later by a gallop through Giselle. That the ballet is one of the great wonders of the cultural world – a 200-year-old company that has survived the rise and fall of Communism to stand as the iconic and definitive exponents of their art – is surely beyond question. They do grand shows, full of shameless magnificence. That has to be worth experiencing at least once, doesn’t it? Or twice, seeing as they’re offering.

Finally, if you fancy a sneak preview of the UAE’s pavilion at the Venice Biennale, head to Gallery One at the Emirates Palace on Thursday evening. The show, which includes work by Lamya Gargash and Tarek al Ghoussein, bears the oddly apologetic title It’s Not You, It’s Me. A phrase more usually associated with the gentle break-up let-down, this may seem to strike a pessimistic note; after all, the UAE’s relationship with the world’s most august biennial has just begun. Here’s hoping the exhibition is the start of something beautiful.

Flash and Enviromena to go Green with Coldplay, for Earth Hour 2009

Abu Dhabi event consultancy Flash announced today that it has partnered with Abu Dhabi-based solar power systems integrator Enviromena, in order to offset the carbon emissions produced from the Coldplay Live in Abu Dhabi concert on March 28th, 2009. Flash is the first UAE-based events consultancy to actively offset such a large scale UAE music event.

All carbon emissions that are generated as part of the concert, whether for lighting, electricity, flights etc., will be calculated to generate the event’s total carbon footprint. Based on the total figure; ‘carbon credits’ will fund an international gold standard certified sustainability project.

The green initiative, which comes with the encouragement of environmental organisation Emirates Wildlife Society – World Wide Fund for Nature (EWS-WWF), also aims to raise awareness of the EWS-WWF’s Heroes of the UAE campaign, to promote energy sustainability in the country.

The concert, the final stop on Coldplay’s “Viva La Vida” world tour, falls on the day of the globally-marked environmental initiative Earth Hour, which encourages people across the globe to switch off unnecessary lights and electricity for one hour to raise awareness about - and counteract the effects of - climate change. This year’s Earth Hour aims to encourage one billion ‘vote earth’ votes, and at the concert, EWS-WWF will directly address the 15,000 expected concert goers on what they can do as individuals to combat this global issue.

Enviromena has already conducted an initial audit into the event’s likely CO2 emissions and will conduct a full audit following the concert on March 28th. Prior to the concert, Flash is encouraging revellers to take a number of simple anti climate-change measures themselves, including switching all lights, air conditioning and electricity off before they leave home, and where possible carpooling to the event at the Emirates Palace, Abu Dhabi.

John Lickrish, Managing Director, Flash said, “Flash understands the impact such a large concert has on the environment, and in launching this carbon offsetting initiative with Enviromena and the WWF, we are doing our bit in balancing out the impact our event will have on the environment. We also hope that in supporting the Heroes of the UAE campaign we are empowering concert goers with the necessary information so they as individuals can begin to combat climate change in their everyday lives.”

Enviromena CEO and President, Sami Khoreibi, explained the importance of the initiative; “Our company’s work revolves around reducing the impact of climate change through developing and implementing environmentally friendly, zero carbon, turn-key solar power solutions. That Flash has taken this important step to address its carbon footprint, while promoting the cause on such a large scale, shows that momentum is starting to build amongst individuals and organisations, for collectively working towards a sustainable future in the country.”

In supporting the EWS-WWF Heroes of the UAE campaign, Flash hopes to help drive awareness of climate change on a local level. Flash will be giving all concert goers a specially made wristband featuring the campaign’s website address. In addition posters and banners will also be prominent across the venue and volunteers, kitted in campaign T-shirts, will be giving advice and information to revellers about how they can make a difference. Short films on the Earth Hour initiative and the EWS-WWF campaign will also be screened prior to the gig. A special announcement will also be made on Earth Hour at 8.30pm on the night of the show.

Speaking on behalf of the WWF, Razan Khalifa Al Mubarak, Managing Director EWS – WWF stated; “Earth Hour is a powerful symbol of what can be achieved through individual action on a global scale, with the whole world coming together in a response to tackle climate change. In the UAE we are keen to grasp the momentum generated by this global occasion, urging everyone to make the switch for one symbolic hour, thus taking affirmative action towards helping save our planet.”

“If Earth Hour is seen as the global community responding to climate change, residents of the UAE can pledge to make an ongoing lasting difference by joining the Heroes of the UAE campaign at http://www.heroesoftheuae.ae. To create a sustainable environment for future generations, people need to show they care every day by taking simple action, and following the campaign’s energy saving tips. As a vital first step let’s join together as part of a global community to show our support for Earth Hour,” she added.

The one-off Abu Dhabi gig from Coldplay, organised by Flash and Live Nation, will be the band’s only stop in the Middle East as part of the world tour for their critically acclaimed fourth album; ‘Viva La Vida’, which has secured no less than seven nominations at this year’s Grammy Awards and has been the number-one selling album globally in 36 countries.

Coldplay's Abu Dhabi concert to be carbon neutral

Abu Dhabi // Saturday’s Coldplay concert will be carbon neutral, with organisers helping to fund a wind farm in New Zealand to offset all energy consumed in putting on the event.

The show is being held at the Emirates Palace hotel on the same night as Earth Hour, when lights will be turned off in buildings around the world, including the UAE, to promote energy conservation.

The organisers estimate that the show will generate around 600 tonnes of carbon dioxide.

Because of the practical difficulty of pulling the plug on a stadium full of people during a concert, the promoters will buy wind farm energy credits to show their support.

In addition there will be recycling bins on site, an Earth Hour video will be shown before the band come on stage and leaflets will be handed out to those attending.

The organisers, Flash, announced the carbon-offsetting programme yesterday. It is funded by Enviromena Power Systems, based in Abu Dhabi, with support from the World Wildlife Fund.

“We can’t switch off the power because of health and safety issues,” said John Lickrish, the managing director of Flash. “But what we can do is reach out to the people in the community and speak to them directly. What we will do is to offset all the energy consumption, for example from the people travelling to the event and the band who are departing. We will then purchase gold credits.”

These credits are a part of a carefully audited offsetting scheme.

Enviromena compiled a detailed estimate of the emissions the event is likely to cause. The 600 tonnes of carbon dioxide include the amounts generated by flying an entourage of 40 people from Hong Kong and on to London, by the amplifiers and lighting rigs, by the cars of the estimated 15,000 people attending the show and by the waste created.

“At the end of that, you come up with a carbon number and that is offset by investment in projects such as the wind farm one we are investing in with the project in New Zealand,” said Sami Khoreibi, the president of Enviromena Power Systems, who are doing a deal with the UK-based Carbon Neutral Company to fund the wind farm.

Elsewhere, the Burj Al Arab in Dubai will darken during Earth Hour hour, along with other buildings across the country. The UAE’s climate means a lot of energy is used in air conditioning, making it difficult for the country to shed its wasteful reputation. “You are dealing with very difficult climate conditions here, this is one of the problems,” Mr Lickrish said. “We can do our little bit at events, but really for us it’s about driving awareness and saying, ‘Guys, it’s not that difficult.’”

Coldplay themselves had yet to confirm their support in this scheme, he said.
