14-Mar-09: Coldplay to play Sydney Bushfire Benefit Show, Sydney, Australia [Live broadcast Triple J

Recommended Posts

Speculation is mounting down under that veteran Aussie promoters Michael Gudinski and Michael Chugg are co-ordinating simultaneous stadium concerts in support of the country's bushfire and flood appeals.

Word is that the 100,000-capacity Melbourne Cricket Ground and the 45,000-plus capacity Sydney Cricket Ground will host concerts on March 14, while unconfirmed reports suggest the likes of Foo Fighters, Coldplay, Kings Of Leon, Jimmy Barnes, the Veronicas and a reunited Midnight Oil could be among the names on the bill. Coldplay is touring Australia shortly and are booked to play Sydney Acer Arena that evening.

Confirmation of "two major music industry bushfire and flood relief concerts" was made in an email late this afternoon inviting the media to a Feb. 24 press conference at the MCG.

News of the benefit concerts emerged from an unlikely source - the sports pages. Australia's cricket administrators are in a quandary about its centrepiece state final, which is booked-in for March 13-17 at the MCG - a time and place at loggerheads with the mooted event.

At least 209 people are confirmed dead as a result of the bushfires which have raged across areas of Victoria, in the south east of Australia, while areas in the north of the country have been battling major floods, causing damage estimated in the hundreds of millions of dollars.

Whats happened in Australia is a tragedy, if Chris and the lads are able to lend their names to a worthy cause, I'm sure they will, besides they seem to enjoy springing surprises!:sneaky: they always have something up their sleeve!:curtain:

that would be so amazing i can't think straight. i'm in melbourne and i'll be there. even if coldplay aren't playing, it'd be mindblowing - i mean, where else can you see Kings of Leon and the Foo Fighters at the same concert? if Coldplay are there as well my life will be beyond perfect.

If this happens, it will most likely go like this: there will be two concerts on the same day, the sat 14th. KOL (in melb that night) will headline the melb show, and Coldplay the sydney show.

Which (if it happens) kinda sucks, cos I'd prefer if they had them both playing at the same venue on different days, not both on the sat.

I guess we'll just have to wait until the Tuesday press conference..

Foo fundraiser

US rockers Foo Fighters may headline a twin-city fundraiser for bushfire and flood victims.

Touring promoters Michael Chugg and Michael Gudinski will stage simultaneous rock events in Melbourne and Sydney on March 14.

Foo Fighters and Kings of Leon are in talks for the MCG show and Coldplay is tipped for the Sydney show.

Chugg and Gudinski will officially announce the shows on Tuesday.

Local stars Silverchair, Powderfinger, Eskimo Joe, Jimmy Barnes and The Veronicas have offered to play at the benefits.

And John Farnham may be lured out of semi-retirement to support relief efforts, but his manager, Glenn Wheatley said The Voice needs to get match fit.

"This tragedy is the only reason for him to consider doing anything," Wheatley said. "John will find it harder than most to do a major live performance as he has not performed in more than three years and had no intention of going out again.

"He has not had a band together in all this time, so it will require an enormous amount of work to pull something together."

Yesterday actor Lisa McCune and singers Russell Morris and Darryl Cotton headlined the Chief Commissioner's Bushfire Appeal Concerts at Melbourne Town Hall.

Victoria Police Chief Commissioner Christine Nixon said the concert provided an opportunity for communities touched by the devastation to come together to help raise money and for members to unite in support of their emergency services colleagues.

"This is a great opportunity for Melburnians to show their support for bushfire survivors and emergency services colleagues," she said.

"Many members of the emergency services have witnessed firsthand the devastation the bushfires have brought upon communities, so this is an opportunity for them to help support the fundraising efforts.

"Over the past week, police bands have been performing at relief centres across the state and many residents have said how much they've appreciated the performances."

I don't want to have to squish in with all the fucking teeny-boppers/idiot teens at the MCG to watch Kings of Leon sound the same in every goddamn song and be once again ridiculously overrated. Eskimo Joe at MCG or DEATH!

Also, I bet my monies on The Veronicas playing Sydney.
