COLDPLAY may have made their name with heart-stirring rock ballads. But that’s about to change thanks to drummer WILL CHAMPION’s tinkering in the studio.

The tub-thumper wants to take the rockers on a rave odyssey after investing in some top-of-the-range beat-making equipment. Recent sessions have seen the sticks-man unveil a thundering, 168-beats-per- minute banger of a track. That’s proper hands in the air, big fish, little fish, cardboard box tempo. And at that speed it’s even faster than many techno tracks or anthems from rave’s heyday. I’m told: “The lads are still on a creative roll in the studio and Will is bringing lots of ideas to the table.

Whistles

“He’s got a new drum machine and has been having a lot of fun pushing it to its limits. His most recent offering is turbo-charged, to say the least, but the lads have been having a great time working with it.”

Creative Will — who frontman CHRIS MARTIN believes is the most versatile musician in the band — isn’t just keen on following the white gloves and whistles direction. He’s also been taking Chris, JONNY BUCKLAND and GUY BERRYMAN down an experimental jazz avenue.

Nice.

The source added: “Will has got a track in seven-four time that he’s working on, 99 per cent of rock music is based around the standard four-four time signature. “It’s only the most adventurous of jazz people who compose anything with such an irregular beat. But he’s pressing forward with it.”

Will must be sprinkling something special on his Sugar Puffs if jazz is the new Coldplay flavour. But I suspect he might have a kindred spirit at the band’s converted bakery HQ in north London.

BRIAN ENO, who is once again producing the new material, is no stranger to the experimental side of pop music. He’s been involved in all manner of avant-garde projects. The lads, who released single Life In Technicolor earlier this year, have been recording the follow-up to last year’s Viva La Vida album during a break from their world tour.

In the middle of May they will hit the road again, touring North America until the end of June before playing some summer festivals in Europe. They’ll bring their current campaign to a close with shows at Wembley Stadium on September 18 and 19.

Just in time for Ibiza’s closing parties.

Coldplay 'Recording New Rave Album'

Coldplay have been experimenting with rave music during recent recording sessions, according to reports.

The change of direction is said to be a result of drummer Will Champion’s investment in a drum machine. The group, who are once again recording with Brian Eno, are apparently keen to test the boundaries of their music.

“He’s got a new drum machine and has been having a lot of fun pushing it to its limits,” a source told The Sun newspaper. “His most recent offering is turbo-charged, to say the least, but the lads have been having a great time working with it.”

The source said that Champion had created one song in “seven-four time”.

“It’s only the most adventurous of jazz people who compose anything with such an irregular beat. But he’s pressing forward with it,” the source added.

Coldplay have been using a break in their tour schedule to record the follow-up to 2008’s ‘Viva La Vida or Death And All His Friends’. The group are due to play London’s Wembley Stadium later this year with Jay-Z and Girls Aloud.

 that picture is ridiculous! Made me laugh out loud in my office, almost blasting my tea at the screen. :D

I think them being adventurous, and coming up with new things is the most exciting news I've heard all day! I don't think they'll ever lose sight of who Coldplay essentially is, musically, but a bit of a shake up can only do great things for creativity for the new album.

I wish Chris was there to be a part of it, but on the other hand, perhaps its a good thing for now.

Coldplay + rave + that hilarious picture SNF29BIZFX-280_791697a.jpg ??? :stunned::o

DAMN!!! that could actually work! xd.gif

Maybe we're gonna listen to some kind of Coldplay-techno-remix-ish sounding songs in the future, AHHH.

It's really fascinating how the sound of Coldplay vary with each album, I have the feeling like if they were travelling through time with their music style, first it was all guitars and stuff, after that more spacey, then with Viva La Vida it's all Revolutionary, THEN techno-style... and what comes after that? Neanderthal-musik with sticks and stones?

Why is this story reported on twice? And yes, it does sound like they took excerpts from R#42's blog and made it sound like Coldplay gave them some big exclusive!

I'm pretty confident in the fellas. They know what the Coldplay sound should be, so I'm not worried a BIT about what they're up to, liking techno or not. The sound may differ wildly from album to album but it will ALWAYS have that distinctive Coldplayness (i like that word! :))

Exactly, they always try stuff out.

So Will truly is becoming a flambuoyant, homosexual drummer who wears outrageous clothes and says outrageous things, just like Chris suggested?

I kid, I kid.

We've been hearing about so much experimental material that the band is working on that I hope they at least include some classic roots in this following album. That and I don't need actual rave music to totally rave at one of their concerts. :laugh3:
