how can half of you say Radiohead is overrated?

each one of their records have brought different aspects of music and have influence many bands.

When you look at bands that are overrated you have to think about what they do outside of the music and their live shows.

Most bands don't have the ability to bring out a good live show, mainly new bands out there. However most of these bands you all deem overrated have given so much influence to probably most of the filth you listen to now. Coldplay, Radiohead, U2, and many others have the ability to play an amazing live show and each of their albums are experimented with their music style and change music .

That's my oppinion.

There is no sense in arguing what everyone else believes because everyone's style and interest is different.

They aren't the greatest musicians ever, nobody is saying that. But you could argue that DragonForce are the best guitarists alive, but who gives a shit about technical ability if the songs are terrible?

 

I challenge you to find a person who doesn't like at least one Beatles song, they have such an extensive collection of music, some of it that would be groundbreaking even it was released today and it appeals to different people on different levels, there are some Beatles songs I really don't like that others will love, that jsut shows you the depth of the band.

 

I think when most people think of the Beatles they think of the Hard Day's Night Beatles singing pure pop music to screaming girls.

 

My main irritation is songs like Yellow Submarine and Strawberry Fields, I have listened extensivly to their work and while I wouldn't say I hate it, it's not music I love either, I personally find them overrated looking back on their work now but if I was around in the 1960s when they first appeared I might have a different view.

Listen to Let It Be - the greatest song ever or Octopus's Garden, its pretty cool. A Day In The Life - great song! Like yourself I see no direct fascination with Yellow Submarine or Strawberry Fields Forever but I do think they are the greatest act ever.

Arctic monkeys in my opinion are nowhere near being overated i know so many people who have never even heard of them..

 

On a side note, it bugs me when people judge a band when only knowing a few songs.

 

For the beatles references here.. Strawberry fields in my opinion is a good song. But, thats just my opinion.

 

And.. of course everyone is going to have different opinions on what bands/artist they find to be overrated.

no variation between, say, 'love me do' and 'revolution 9'? 'A Day in the Life'? 'Tommorow Never Knows'? the last half of abbey road?

 

totally understand people thinking radiohead are overated, despite the fact that they're my favourite band by far... they get an uncomfortable amount of critical love...

 

but yeah, the beatles made rubber soul, revolver, sgt peppers, the white album and abbey road, in about 5 years. that's mindblowing.

I like only a few songs by them, I consider Pink Floyd muuuch better; you can't compare at all, for me Musically The Beatles are the most overrated band of all time (just behind Rolling Stones). But I do know what they did in just a few time (basically change the popular culture, in fact they created it).

er, they also changed the musical culture... they introduced the sitar to pop music (i think, may have been the byrds), used tape loops, and generally united a whole lot of disparate genres into pop music, which is basically what has made pop music interesting since, lol.

and pink floyd were constantly trying to write songs like the beatles. look at their more melodic stuff on meddle and atom heart mother for example. Besides that, they also wrote many of the greatest pop songs ever.

 

on another note, the rolling stones are only overated by rolling stone etc, who are constantly fellating the doors, springsteen and U2 and have been totally out of touch for so long. their 60s and early 70s stuff is so fucking good. just pretend they died rock star deaths in the mid 70s and we can forget about the last 30 years of shite :D didnt rolling stone give like 4.5/5 or something for 'a bigger bang'? the mind boggles...

They changed music introducing some stuff, but their string arrangements were just boring for example, there are much better arrangements than theirs

yeah, the lead guitar is totally different, but the actual songwriting, and the vocals are very beatles-esque. 'us and them' for example. besides, by the time pink floyd hit their stride the beatles were already gone... as for the string arrangments being boring, how about the crazy orchestral shit at the end of 'a day in the life'? i mean i know its random, but thats supposedly 'avant garde'.

 

all that said, paul mcartney did refer to syd barrett era floyd as the future of music. but he was most probably high. in the end, whether you like a band or not is obviously up to your tastes, but if the beatles were simple musically, then so has pretty much all pop music since.

haha, yeah, i dont mean they're beatles wanna-be's like oasis, who are totally shameless about it, but they were influenced by the beatles. and apparently, it went the other way, too. example would be the particular way pink floyd's (pre-roger domination) vocals are doubletracked, and the tone of the drums.

 

and i do consider much of pink floyd's music pop, in the general sense. radiohead, pink floyd, the beatles, coldplay are all pop, when it comes down to the broader sweep. they're sure as hell not classical or jazz. and i swear i read somewhere that both radiohead and pink floyd consider themselves pop.

I agree with The Killers and Animal Collective, however, Interpol is a Joy Division incarnation and the arctic monkeys are raw, but not necessarily the best, but with Sigur Ros, i really really have to disagree with you there.

They really bring so much uniqueness to alternative music and is so peaceful. I think their music is wonderful and i don't think they are overrated. They get acclaim from fans and music followers but they aren't given as much attention Fall Out Boy gets for example, now that's an overrated band!
