We're all entitled to our opinion, guys, although I knew most people would disagree with mine. I just find both The Smiths and The Stone Roses so boring

Well you ARE from Liverpool so you are excused from hating all things Manchester! Don't worry I love Liverpool and hate Manchester... for footballing reasons only.

You hate The Smiths then...

I live in Liverpool now but I grew up down South, so it's not a Manchester thing.

2 - Nirvana - Kurt Cobain shot himself in the head. Up until that point nobody really raved on about them because in reality they weren't special.

I'll admit they're somewhat overrated today, but its ludicrous to say they weren't raved about until Kurts suicide. They completely reformed the rock and pop of the time in one fell sweep, and had a huge following, even before In Utero.

You hate The Smiths then...

Sorry, but just develop that conclusion for me. Amaze me.

Unfortunately, i can't. Because I'm a Radiohead fan... :(

Really?! Jesus Christ!!:wink3:

Seriously you want me to narrow it down to just 5?

Well they narrowed it down to bands... at least you don't have to think about all those overrated solo artists!

Underrated? Have you ever been to Manchester?

Yes, hundreds of times.. :P

I just don't think the Roses get as much credit as they deserve for the influences they've had on modern bands.

1. Oasis - why this band continues to be gods gift to music for britain i will never understand. sure they create easy to listen to guitar music, but its boring, they never change their sound enough. several times i have listened to an oasis song on the radio and thought it was one song title, and it turned out to be another. shows how samey quite a few of their songs sound in relation to each other.

2. Nirvana - i can see that kurt cobain clearly had a charisma or certain appeal about himself that came across to their fans through the songs and performance, but surely nirvana wouldnt be mentioned to the same level to this year, if kurt was still alive.

thats all i can justify or think of right now

I completely agree about Oasis. ^

I don't know enough Nirvana to say so...

Yes, hundreds of times.. :P

They really do though. I actually prefer Second Coming to the first album, cos I am weird.

Nirvana do have some good songs and they did inspire a shit load of bands and they started a whole new wave of music like Tneispeleir said

Nirvana actually got one of my favorite bands into music. If it wasn't for Nirvana, they'd never have discovered Nirvana's influences that they ended up liking far more than they liked them.

I personally couldn't care less about their music. I'm sure back when Kurt was still alive they made a big difference, but if he had lived I doubt they'd be one of todays great rock bands.

i can't believe there's a thread saying that radiohead, the smiths, oasis and nirvana are overrated, 4 of the most influential rock bands of all time. If these bands are overrated I would love to hear which bands people here think are great.

Remember that "overrated" does not equate to "bad". Heck, as much as I enjoy Radiohead, I don't think they're the second coming. In general, I'm not a big fan of these threads since they rely so much on general perception rather than the true quality of an artist, however.

nasty thread

This thread has some mean and nasty posts, but here goes:

1) Oasis

2) Radiohead

3) Bon Jovi

4) Arrowsmith

5) Nirvana

So I spelled their name incorrectly. I had also typed "Bob Jovi", but cought that one on time to edit it.

I do agree with you about The Grateful Dead. I think one had to be there with them from their beginnings.

Bands, if it was just artists I would say:

Taylor Swift(her singing is just so-so)

Destiny's Child/Beyonce

Here are some bands:

Rascal Flatts

Weezer

Blink 182(they are doing a reunion tour but I don't know what's so good about them)

Green Day(as great as they are live, they aren't that groundbreaking musically)

But I don't think anyone considers Bon Jovi to be artistically good, they make catchy songs.

3 bands that have come up a few times already have been Radiohead, Nirvana and Oasis.

Overrated - Nirvana

Underrated - Nirvana

But which nirvana is which, the 60s/70s british Nirvana or the 90s American Nirvana?
