Except radiohead, maybe?

u know it's funny.

where's the list of how the bands are rated? if you give me a list i can tell you which of the bands i think are overrated. cuz i don't care about a lot of bands and don't really know how they're "rated". in my list there's only bands that i like and if the band "X" is not in my list i can't say that the band "X" is overrated, cuz i haven't rated it. and if the band "Y" IS in my list then the only person who can be blamed for overrating the band "Y" is me.

oh im the master of sense-making.

I dont really like comparing bands(especially ones I like), because they are each gonna have their own unique qualties. Also, i feel personally that rather than comparing the bands, one should just listen to what they like:)

And.. im sure many bands have had influence from the beatles. Pink floyd and the beatles are both amazing bands/artist.

this thread is pointless, everyone has their own opinions. so here are mine...sigur ros can't possibly be overrated. Nirvana is not overrated, they are rated just fine...producing 2 classic albums before they ended. The Beatles overall are better than pink floyd, but pf are also great. oasis are influenced by the beatles because they love the beatles, but they still make great songs/albums...just like coldplay is influenced by radiohead and u2 doesnt mean theyre not a great band in their own right. and arctic monkeys are not overrated in america atleast because i dont think many people have heard of them.

Listen to Let It Be - the greatest song ever or Octopus's Garden, its pretty cool. A Day In The Life - great song! Like yourself I see no direct fascination with Yellow Submarine or Strawberry Fields Forever but I do think they are the greatest act ever.

I think people got the wrong impression that I think their bad, while I don't particularly enjoy some of their music, by no means do I hate them, I just feel they can be a bit over praised.

Pink Floyd and The Beatles are too radically different for me to express which is objectively 'better', but I will say that both are undeniably f*ckin brilliant. I honestly don't have any qualms with people saying either band is better, because Pink Floyd created some music The Beatles could never have dreamed of, and vice-versa. It really comes down what perspective you're viewing it from.

sigur ros

how?

Perfectly summed up. I don't think there is any point to this thread now.

haha, yeah, i dont mean they're beatles wanna-be's like oasis, who are totally shameless about it, but they were influenced by the beatles. and apparently, it went the other way, too. example would be the particular way pink floyd's (pre-roger domination) vocals are doubletracked, and the tone of the drums.

and i do consider much of pink floyd's music pop, in the general sense. radiohead, pink floyd, the beatles, coldplay are all pop, when it comes down to the broader sweep. they're sure as hell not classical or jazz. and i swear i read somewhere that both radiohead and pink floyd consider themselves pop.

for the record, my top 5 overated bands?

sigur ros

arctic monkeys

the killers

animal collective

interpol

only five bands? :( i could go on all day. there's a lot of modern indie out there...

what?

no... you m-u-s-t be jesting!!

Maybe you haven't heard enough; or you haven't really gotten them.

nobody can really beat the Beatles

musically?

yes... I can give you a list of 20 artists that are much better than the beatles... of course that's just my opinion, just like some others don't like Sigur Ros, who I consider one of the best bands ever... and I'm sure I'm not the only one. I know at least 30 people that agree with me (on the beatles being overrated musically)

if people watch/listen to that and still say that you can't compare floyd to the beatles. then im not here (in my best thom singing voice)

here is how i see it

Beatles = Most influential band of all time (double tracking, heavy distortion, video clips, stadium shows, 'the pop song'.......the sitar?!??)

Rolling Stones = Biggest band of all time -cos they said so. if you disagree listen to Forty Licks.

Led Zeppelin = Greatest band of all time - there will never be another musical ensemble as perfect as them.

U2 = the last of the megabands. shows you dont need to be up to ur eyeballs in drugs to write some good music.

each of the bands i've mentioned can never ever be overrated regardless of how much music rags and critics kiss their arse. the contribution each of them have made to modern music is unmatched and their influence will live on forever. you will not find a single artist/band in the world who wouldn't state one of them as a major influence.

and since when were The Killers rated?? their last couple of albums got absolutely hammered by the critics!! to me the The Killers are the Bon Jovi's of the 21st century. great to jump to and sing along with but thats about where it ends.

echoes is epic, and beatles were not epic

not epic? you have got to be kidding me.

Either that's not epic or all those girls have problems.

Was Sam's Town hammered by critics? I have to say though that their latest album is absolutely poor. "Human" is a stupid dance record that is constantly overplayed. It's an awful song and the music is dire at best. In general though, I think The Killers are naff. And remember Razorlight? They absolutely bombed it with that album of theirs last year.

oh no, i agree with you on that

the music was simple, that's what made it so great

it showed that such simple things can take over the world, and they did in such a short time.

and yes, there are bands much musically better, and I agree that Sigur Ros is UNDERRATED. yeah they get fan attention and all that, but i don't think they have gotten what they deserve.

I know at least 30 people that agree with me (on the beatles being overrated musically)

and 100 million people who disagree with you.

Sigur Ros being overrated ≠ any sense.

Considering that 90% of the people I meet and talk music about have never even heard of Sigur Ros, its virtually impossible for them to be overrated, even if their music wasn't ridiculously awesome.

The Beatles have influenced practically every musical act out there. If there wasn't any Beatles, there wouldn't have been any Coldplay, or U2, or Pink Floyd, or Muse, or any of the other popular rock bands around.

They might be a tad overrated (as in they're not the greatest band in the world), but they did influence tons of other bands. And they are good.

no, I'm not saying that they were not inlfuencial or anything, I'm just saying that I find them a bit boring and repetetive, no matter if my most of my favourite bands would strongly disagree... Yes they were the greatest artist of their time, and they still are, I doubt there will ever be someone as influential as the beatles again; as artists, no one can beat them, no one, but as musicians? Yes

i could never get into the beatles and i do not care for their music. and people keep calling me crazy but whatever

Yeah, never got into The Beatles... don't care about their music whatsoever. U2 as well, never cared about them.

^^

you dont need to be grateful for anything. just accept that The Beatles and U2 are coldplay's two biggest influences. there's no two ways about that

Considering that 90% of the people I meet and talk music about have never even heard of Sigur Ros, its virtually impossible for them to be overrated, even if their music wasn't ridiculously awesome.

Seriously? They aren't that obscure, they are very well known in England.

Plus it's very possible for something that isn't immensely popular to be overrated.

My main irritation is songs like Yellow Submarine and Strawberry Fields, I have listened extensivly to their work and while I wouldn't say I hate it, it's not music I love either, I personally find them overrated looking back on their work now but if I was around in the 1960s when they first appeared I might have a different view.

Yellow Submarine is one of my least favourite songs ever.
