Random Vista Crashes

Featured Replies

This problem is going my nuts in, whenever I think I have sorted it out, it lays in wait for a couple hours before randomly deciding to crash, when I'm doing something important like editing a document, looking at files in iTunes, looking at the internet, chatting on MSN or even when the computer is 'idle'.

It's just annoying.

Any computer experts out there who might know any reasons for the crashes (apart from Vista being a toaster)?

Hey, do you get the blue screen as well and then CHKDSK starts?

I have that problem for about 3 days now since Windows installed some "important" updates...

Quite a few of my PC issues over the years have been video driver related , I`d uninstall my video drivers (and a deep clean of them) and reinstall them .

Uninstall IE and reinstall or fix it .

Disable half of my programs that start on startup with msconfig , if it still crashes then swap over to the other half that I disabled etc try again . Including my virus checker and firewall (after turning on the Windows firewall again) - and dont do much browsing/running of programs .

Check my virtual memory wasnt full

Hardware

Check device manager for any exclamation marks

Disk check (full) of all disks

I`d check my PC was cooling properly , check BIOS on running temp (although this would probably turn the PC off ) or use a BIOS temp program on my desktop , check my HD was cool enough (fans clean etc) . Leave the side of the machine off and see if it still keels over .

I know you will have done most/some of the above , Ive put them there for others less PC literate .

No Blue Screen of Death, just random deaths with no error codes popping up or anything.

I've put it down to a faulty router, so I've ordered a new router to see if the problems strikes back.

Mhmm, I hope I'm over it now. Vista installed some more updates and since then it's running smoothly...

Did you check programs you recently installed? They might not work well on Vista?

Sorry, I think I can't help you much.

I usually check help forums for advice or ask a friend if I can't find a solution myself.

I did a full system restore on Monday and only installed programs I know run with Vista, all was fine until the router was added.

Maybe the router's not compatible? :s

What both a Thomson Speedtouch (which has been known to be dodgy) and a Netgear router?

  • 1 month later...

I never hear of a Netgear router crashing or being a pain in arse. But I'm sure as soon as I say that someone will correct me. :dozey:

It's still not sorted, and HP have no clue what is causing the problem as all the reports they are producing, including BIOS reports are coming up clean. :(

Vista sucks,that's why i'm sticking with XP.

Google is supposed to launch a new operating system for personal computers soon, it will be kind of similar to the Android's operating system. I guess Google is now switching to a new level of competition, and might win the battle between Microsoft and Apple. :wink3:

The google OS would be good on those entry-level 'netbooks'.

I know Vista sucks Rick, but I'm stuck with it :(

*makes note to self Never to buy an off-the-shelf PC again*

Custom builds either you doing it directly or getting a 3rd party to build it to your specs are easier to deal with.

I have partial success, but whenever error 0x80041003 is down to the crashes (happens in the event logger just before the computer crashes) is another story.

Why? Just get yourself a copy of Windows XP.

Or you can download Windows 7,it was a free download..not sure if it still is.......

Not all of us can afford a Mac :P

They are picking it on this Monday to have a look at it in the factory :D

it's because its a pc :smug: lol

PC = PERSONAL COMPUTER

Therefore

MAC = PC

WINDOWS = PC

GET IT STRAIGHT! Apple only used "PC" to refer to Windows in their ads because they didn't have the rights to use the name!

Touching wood the problems have appeared to have been fixed.

Well I've been using the computer for the past 3/4 hours updating it with all the windows updates which before would have caused it to freeze, and it has been good, so whatever they did to the computer in the workshop I have no clue.
