Which Coldplay member do you think is the most underrated?

Featured Replies

Okay, there are some things I agree with and others, not so much.

When the topic is music, Guy is in my opinion the most underrated. Someone pointed out that since he doesn't have a solo it would be weird for Chris to do what he does to Will and Jonny. True.

But obviously he has time to compliment his musical talent during "I'm a believer" for instance. So, by choosing to compliment his good looks, he doesn't take the opportunity to praise him as a bass player. It's fine by me, I am just pointing out.

I do think though that most people are right when they say the drummers and the bass players are often forgotten as individual musicians. But it's the way it has always been, sadly. I wouldn't know names like Adam Clayton or Larry Mullen Jr if I didn't LOVE U2.

It's just my point of view;)

Actually, depending on your criteria, they all can be underrated. If you look at the lyrical side and the singing side, Chris can be underrated because he definitely does not get the credit he deserves.

As for Jonny, well, I stated my case in my earlier post so I am not going to repeat that.

If your criteria is the rhythm and the groove then Guy and Will can be considered underrated.

This can go on and on.

So, in reality, they are all underrated in some form and/or manner.

Guy is known for being pretty smart, though. In interviews, he usually makes some clever comment and everyone else is like: :goofy:!

You're right and let's just be glad that Coldplay, as a band, is recognized by the fans and that's what they really want, I think.

If any of them decided to go solo wouldn't get the acclaim compared to the success of Coldplay. Only Sting resisted the solo test:)

Well, it's an endless discussion. We all have different opinions and that's good. Because if everyone like the same stuff....things would get dull:P

Exactly as Chris has stated many a time it's the chemistry of those four people which makes them work so well.

If you read a review of their music by a competent critic then they will critique the whole band and their input, but they are few and far between. :dozey:

I do agree Guy is underrated though, I was just saying I don't think he's underrated BY Chris. The only being recognised for his looks does ring true though, I mean if you go into the Guy thread it is rare you will see anything written about his bass playing, that's not a criticism, I'm not saying his fans don't rate him, I guess the bass is the most hidden in their songs, like you said...provides a solid contribution.

Oh and I just have to say

"Desmond Tutu was the millionth signature"

"Is that a coincidence?"

 Sorry Guy :P

Hahahha... that is the exact time I began questioning his intelligence and the exact quote I was thinking of when I made the post above yours :P. Lol, but I have noticed an increase in knowledge. He's actually very well spoken now. :P

I always thought Guy was smart:shame:

Guy IS smart. As Miss Lestrade said, in interviews he is usually the one with the clever comment, for example, in the Ben Jones interview last year Chris, Jonny, and Ben didn't understand something about song titles and Guy came in for one of his only comments and had the answer. Ben I think called him the brains behind the outfit or something. Also just to name one I watched recently in the uncut version of the recent Rove interview Guy was the one to come in with the flaw in Chris' idea about bathroom counts.

With that said, I'd probably pick Jonny as the most underrated if only for the argument that out of all of the 'big' bands today music lovers are least likely to know his name despite his damn awesome guitar playing. Also, even though there are many points in the live show where Jonny comes foward or Chris points him out he is hardly ever mentioned specifically in critic reviews.

Will is quite possibly the best musician ever, so he will always be underrated.

Guy seems to be left out a lot of the time but he's so amazing, so he is probably the most underrated.

i voted for Chris :D

The reason for this is that i could not name the most underrated member from the rest of the band. It's Chris and co for the most part, although for me all of them are equal.

I voted Will because he's the one who's face 'general people' knows less (Guy too, but he had some 'recognition' due to CHris comments on his look...>.>).

But it's really a tough spot between Guy and Will...Musically speaking, I must say that with the Viva tour and the album, Will have more spotlight...Guy is still in the shadow...He's not a 'shiny' bass player like Flea (RHCP) but his bass lines are trully beautiful! I'd say Guy is an 'intelligent' player. He's not trying to do exentric stuff with his instrument (even if he can be pretty bad ass and groovy...'Rainy day' people!!), but his work highlights the song (and Chris words) exactly at the right time...It's sharp, and it gives depth to the songs in my opinion...X&Y is marked all over with Guy's touch but strangely, few people notice it...:/

But it's not just him or Will, in general, the rythm section get little attention from people even though rythm section is truly the 'heart' of song (I see more guitar as a higlight, like a shiny powder spray..).Maybe because the bass line and the drums is what gets my hear first when I listen to a song that for me, it's 'unfair' that their work is so underrated... I dunno....

But anyway, as long as we, coldplayers, give them credits, it's all that matter!

Arnim!!

you think Guy??:uhoh:

Amy! :nice:

Yes, as my friends don't know that a "Guy" exist. :surprised:

Citation:

"There's Chris Martin, the drummer and the guitarist ..."

My sister did that too... I show her the tour book and looking at Chris she said 'oh, that's your singer?!'... I gave her my 'Will Champion's death look' and replied: 'it's a band, they are 4...'

Actually, I think it's Guy. He is always referred to as a pretty face (which he obviously has) but since he's so quiet in public, he doesn't get the deserved recognition, in my opinion.

Also, he plays the most underrated instrument ever, so nobody pays attention to him as a bass player.

Sorry Guy but you are the most underrated for me.....you are so sad!!!!!

:kiss::kiss:

you made me Laugh.... no Guy is definately no Flea.....sadly no bassing out butt naked for Guy like Flea does! even tho it would be quite a sight for some of us....:wink3: :P but yeah his bass lines are still so good like u said.......Rainy Day....perfection:wacky:

So yeah Will& Guy are both underrated......but looks like WIll is the general opinion from this poll and everything....so i guess its Will

and remember:

I don't know when exactly it was, but there was an interview and under the interview were said:

said by Chris Martin, Jonny Buckland, Guy BarrOWman and Will Champion.

I think Guy's the one who gets less recognition than the others.
