Track 1: Some guitar strumming with a male voice over the top. Drums then kick in. Pretty catchy, straight-forward rock tune. Not bad at all.

Track 2: I like this. Poppy and chilled. Nice guitar work.

Track 3: Is that Portuguese? This is really cool, again rather chilled. I like the drumming. Very different feel to the first two songs. Best track so far.

Track 4: This starts off with some strings then moves into a guitar, followed by a male voice. His voice sounds familiar..Can't quite place it, though. Its quite nice, don't think its my cup of tea, though.

Track 5: Post-Punky guitar kicks this off. Voice sort of reminds me of the guy from Placebo. Is it Placebo?

Track 6: This I like. Nice combo of loud and the quieter parts. Quite a catchy chorus too. I like the effects on the guitar too.

Track 7: Another Electronica track with what sounds like electronic whistling in the back. I'm quite enjoying this. Very laid back vocals and feel to it the whole song.

Track 8: This begins with a guitar and hushed female vocals. Then drums kick in. Quite a poppy/ rock tune. Bit too straightforward for my taste, I'm afraid, but not a bad song by any means.

Track 9: This track starts with fast guitar strumming and drumming. Then slows down as the vocals begin. Pretty nice and gentle.

Track 10: Nice piano intro and vocals. I quite like this. Nice guitar work. Is it supposed to cut off like that, though?

Track 11: This starts with an acoustic guitar and drums. Good song this, catchy bassline and guitars.

Track 12: Kinda funky influenced rock on this. I like this. Lots of Talking Heads influence on this, which can only be a good thing. I like this one! Again it seemed to cut off suddenly, though. Is that supposed to happen?

Track 13: Nice song here, electronic beats and then some cool jazzy trumpet. Very easy on the ears this. My favourite after track 3.

Track 14: We now have a change of mood. Slightly more upbeat and energetic. Quite good, but I'm not really keen on the chorus part :/

Track 15: Back to some electronica. Not too keen on this, I'm afraid. Its not bad, but doesn't really catch my attention, though :/

Track 16: I like the bass on this a lot. Very groovy, dancey electronica and a cool way to end a mixtape. I like this a lot.

----------------------------------------------------------

I would like to thank my mixtape partner for the effort he/she put into it. I really enjoyed some of the tracks on here, particulary tracks 3, 7, 11, 12, 13 and16. Thank you :)

I made your tape :) I've put different styles in it, because I didn't know your musical taste. I'm so glad you liked it! The songs are all from Belgian artists, so you could discover new music. Turns out you like dEUS, just like me

Here are the artists:

(title - artist)

1. Every Morning breaks out - Freaky Age

This is quite a remarkable band, the frontman is only 16 years old but he writes his music all by his own. He's talented!

2. Because - Novastar

3. Saudade II - Arsenal

It is indeed Portuguese, though it's a Belgian band. They sing in French, Dutch, Portuguese... Whatever suits them. They are really awesome, you should check them out. If you do, make sure you listen to 'Lotuk' and 'Longee', two other amazing songs. I'm going to a gig of Arsenal nex month, looking forward to it!

4. Sometime around midnight - The Airborne Toxic Event

The only not Belgian band (I think they're Americans), but I like the song.

5. Rex - Customs

He does sound a lot like Placebo, I totally agree.

6. Hotellounge - dEUS

The best band from Belgium, they are truelly awesome, you should check them out!

http://www.deus.be

7. Hearts a mess - Gotye

8. Everything for free - K's Choice

9. Where did we go wrong - Novastar

10. Stay with me - Lemon

No, it's not supposed to cut off  Maybe something went wrong during uploading it.

11. Return & Smile - Mintzkov

If you like dEUS, you will like Mintzkov too.

12. The Architect - dEUS

13. The Player - Daan

14. Time - A Brand

15. My bond with you and your planet - Zita Swoon

This singer is a former member of dEUS, but this was the only good record he made...

16. Jumpneedle - Magnus

Glad you liked it, it's a complete different genre but I wanted you to hear it. The singer of Magnus is Tom Barman, and he also is the lead singer of dEUS. He's very talented, and goes on tour often to America. He's Belgium's best export product :D It's amazing how he is great in rock with dEUS, and at the same time is great in electronica with Magnus. A genius, I guess!

2 more mixtapes sent!

8 still to come in, and I know at least 2 of those 8 haven't picked up their PM with the matching yet.

  • Author

I will do a big update of the first post with all the links at the weekend :)

How long are we gonna give the 2 ppl who haven't opened their pm..? Before we resort to the big-up mixes..?

  • Author

Lets say if they haven't opened them by the 30th August, then I will send their people some backup tapes.

I'm still looking for 2 backup mixtapes if anybody wants to create another mixtape to send it a a reserve.

If you need, I'll make another one. I have a new theme in mind.

In other news downloading mine now!

i would love some more reviews on my tape if anyone has time. Im currently downloading nicks tape.

Gonna DL yours soon.

1. I suspect I mixed it up. Indian Summer - Gavin DeGraw - I love this album and this is the best song that "fit" with the feel of the tape.

2. Castles in the Sand - The Philosopher Kings - A great Canadian talent, I love them to death.

3. God's Gonna Cut You Down - Johnny Cash - It was between this and Hurt. I felt this was the better of the two for the tape.

4. Sleeping Sickness - City and Colour ft. Gordon Downie - I love love love Dallas Green. This has to be my favorite song by him.

5. Redemption Song - Chris Cornell - Close, it was a Bob Marley cover. I love this version because of Cornell's powerful vocals and awesome acoustic guitar. One of the best covers ever, I am sure Marley would have approved.

6. Tuolumne - Eddie Vedder - I fell in love with this album after seeing Into The Wild and the feel gave what I wanted for the tape. I see america when I hear this song.

7. Better Together - Jack Johnson - I love Jack Johnson, so calm relaxing and just pure bliss. It is a perfect summer song.

8. The Battle of Evermore - Led Zeppelin - One of my favourite Zeppelin songs, the duet and mandolin make this song.

9. Born Losers - Matthew Good - This song is just pure brilliance. Its about his fight with Bipolar disorder. This has to be one of my favourite songs.

10. In Your Atmosphere - John Mayer - I have said and will always stand by it, John Mayer is one of the most talented musicians alive today. This song is just beautiful and so full of angst. It always pulls a string with me.

11. The Ballad of the Beconsfield Miners - Foo Fighters - A beautiful guitar duet by Dave Ghrol and... I foget her name. I just love this and how fast they go.

12. Betterman - Pearl Jam - Has to be my favourite Pearl Jam track. It was between this and Jeremy so glad I would have made a good choice.

13. New Orleans is Sinking - The Tragically Hip - I just love this song all around. The irony I guess.

14. Old Enough - The Racounters - I just love the instrumentals in this song. It proves Jack White can be a great musican. Sorry You didn't like it

15. 5 Days In May - Blue Rodeo - Another lost Canadian talent. They are our Dave Mathews band, only a bit more country. It was between this and another Blue Rodeo song, it was to depressing and not bluesy enough!

16. These Times They Are A-changing - Bob Dylan - No blues mixtape is complete without Bob Dylan. Easily one of the best Dylan songs. He was way ahead of his time.

17. Small Memory - Jon Hopkins - Short, sweet and simple. The third and final instrumental. Chosen for the next song actually, I felt it was a good mood changer.

18. Now Comes The Night - Rob Thomas - Has to be up there with Jhon Mayer for one of the greats alive today. I love this song, it is kind of depressing but I loved it as a closer.

I felt like putting a song at the end which would have been U2's Kite.

Glad you liked it. I was very nervous.

I haven't downloaded it yet but just based on all the songs I know on there, this mix sounds so amazing. omg.

So sorry to my mixtaper and the one I mixed for! I was unexpectedly kidnapped by family to "get to know" my state last week until today so I'll get my review up asap. I haven't read any others yet, but I'm sure they're amazing and I hope my person will still appreciate the mix despite it's lateness and mainstream-ness.

1. Its got a cool bass line. A nice head bobbing song. Very Brit Rock. "If only I knew your name, Id go from door to door" Nice duet.

2. Female vocalist, steady bass drum beat, appreciated guitar. Melody is ok, the echo harmony aint doing it for me. Guitar is again very treble based and Brit Rock.

3. Crash and snare. Piano repeating two chords.

4. Spooky female a capella. Instruments slowly building. good track.

5. I recognize this. Very similar to the others. More jazzy beat.

6. Almost a ska beat, without the horns though. Emphasis on the third. good guitar and vocals in the chorus.

7. Synthy acoustic opening. Nice male vocals, barely distinguishable but good melody. My favourite so far. Its actually really awesome.

8. Very folky song. "Just leave my soul, anywhere till i find peace in this world". Great song. I feel this song.

9. I recognize this! Sweet arpeggiated acoustic guitar in a familiar melody! Love love love it! Was this in The O.C. ?

10. Mood changer. Weird piano distortion, I do like it. A lot actually. Good beat, getting a bit crowded. Its defiantly an instrumental. I recognize this too!

11. Weird piano, a foreign language perhaps? Female, not my cup of tea.

12. strong bass, weird synth. Dont like the echoed voices again, cheap trick to make the vocalist sound better. Im taking a wild guess its called Dance With The Money? Won me over at the end, decent track.

13. Don't know about this one. little too odd and foreign. Once again won me over in the end.

14. Piano ballad? I hope so! Starting off that way! Great song, this guy has good power in his voice. Nice sounding song, perfect way to end it off!

Thanks to who made this, I loved it, good to hear music that I dont normally listen to. Very European though! Not a bad thing.

Just got mine earlier. Made mine too, and it's been sent on. There are a few songs I recognise here, from the bits I listened to, so I'll give this a listen, and do a live review.

1. Oooh, sounds quite atmospheric. Shoegazey, even. Makes me think of a few bands. Does seem to plod a long, but somehow makes that good thing.

2. I love the melody in this song. Plus it's in 3/4 too, which is rather a nice time signature. Gradually building over time. Really, really like this.

3. Hmm, this sounds very good indeed. Obvious shoegaze track - I rather like where this is going.

4. I KNOW THIS FUCKING SONG. It's by a band I REALLY like, just can't place the name of the song. I know it's a b-side though.

5. Right, a live track. Focus is on the guitar here. Rather liking the vocals too, even though I'm totally not into this kind of thing.

6. Know this too. It's one of the best tracks on the album it's taken from, and that sound around four minutes in continues to scare the living shit out of me.

7. Ah, this makes a nice change. Bit more subdued. A little bit twee, even.

8. DRUMS. Very full-on track, this. Right up my street.

9. And we're back into atmospheric territory. Nice ambience going on. It goes places too. I like.

10. Know this as well. Can't recall the name of it at the moment, but I'm a big fan of the band.

11. Best unheard-of track on the thing so far. Beautiful.

12. Know this, guitar sound gave it away right off. The album it's taken from is one of the best released this decade, IMO.

13. More acoustic stuff, yay! It's an instrumental too. All good in my book.

14. OH MY FUCKING GOD, I LOVE THIS SONG. Already know it, 'tis fucking awesome.

15. I commend whoever sent this to me on choosing this song. Makes the perfect closer. I can place the band, but not the song.

A resounding success, I say. 9.5/10. Thank you!

2 more mixtapes sent!

8 still to come in, and I know at least 2 of those 8 haven't picked up their PM with the matching yet.

i bet I am one of those people. Not that I mind or anything....

I will do a big update of the first post with all the links at the weekend :)

thankyou kite. I would have done it for you but i couldn't.

I'm still looking for 2 backup mixtapes if anybody wants to create another mixtape to send it a a reserve.

i am quite happy to make another tape. From nicks response to the first one, i might have a knak for this kind of thing.

Gonna DL yours soon.

Thankyou so much. Love you

Hey there, thanks again for the mix. I liked how you put local music in there. Its good to find out about music from other countries. Thanks again for the effort, I'll check out more by those bands. Oh and nice to meet you :)

Thanks, I'm really happy you liked it. If you listen to dEUS, make sure to check out the songs

- eternal woman

- little arithmetics

- roses

- suds & soda

- via

And so on... They are really great, and they are breaking through in the US etc, so you'll probably get to hear more of them.

Nice to meet you too, I'm Evelien :)

i downloaded your tape nick (Fitz) as well. the first half I really enjoyed and the second half was a bit boring because i knew most of the songs but still great.

Wow, I just read through all of the reviews and everything... I even downloaded some songs. :D I really liked your mixtape, The_Escapist. :nice: I didn't download all the songs, but I might later. I'm really glad you included that OneRepublic song... I think their album is hugely underrated. All Fall Down was one of my favorites.

Review after second listen:

1. Pop rock this is. Good for an intro track. Sounds a bit familiar. Can't help moving to it.

2. Drums. Very cool beginning; somewhat reminds me of Devotchka. I like this a lot! An instrumental track and quite different from the one before.

3. This I like as well. Brit rock. Cool guitar work. I'm moving to this too.

4. Violins for the beginning. It's nice but I'm not so keen on it.

5. Cool beginning. Is this a cover? I really really like this one. "Relaaax!" Has a bit of 70s rock influence in it, I'd say.

6. Electronicish start. Not too keen on this actually. Seems like a remix, maybe?

7. Acoustic at the beginning. Interesting sound takes over. This one is nice; instrumental.

8. Very cool guitar work. "nanannana" Is it the same artist as the 5th one? Awesome. Can't wait to see who this is!

9. This one is acoustic. It's nice. Not big on it, though.

10. I really like this one. Is it old? It's poppish, still I like it a lot. Some really good guitar work in it.

11. This one is very nice. Poppish as well. But I very much like it.

12. Quiet, acoustic beginning. Women's voice. Adele, is it? Sounds like her though I don't know her music that well so I'm not sure. I quite like this and how it takes up. Her voice is amazing :)

13. Very different approach now. A bit of electronica. This I really like. Didn't expect it, honestly. Deffintely a standout.

14. Nice at the start. Violins. Quiet nice and catchy. I like it; very cheery.

15. Ah, this one is Mew's! :) But I don't know it. New album, is it? Still haven't listened to it. But I'm glad to see them on here.

16. Ukulele. Sounds live. It's quite nice :)

17. People chattering in the background. Weird sounds. Interesting way to end the mix. Women's voice takes over. I like it so far. Takes up now. Is this Icelandic? Or not, I'm not sure. It's quite nice, nevertheless. I would say it's Sigur Ros too but it's not Jonsi's voice, so I don't know.

I really enjoyed this mix. Maybe the best I got so far. Very different than what I'm used to listen to. But I needed this change and to listen to more brit/pop rock rather than the obscure stuff I usually listen to. So, thanks a lot, my mixtape maker :) Standouts for me were: 2, 5, 8, 10, 11, 12, 13 and 17.

I got my mixtape  I got my mixtape

It would take a while to review though.

8. Everything for free - K's Choice

9. Where did we go wrong - Novastar

10. Stay with me - Lemon

No, it's not supposed to cut off  Maybe something went wrong during uploading it.

11. Return & Smile - Mintzkov

If you like dEUS, you will like Mintzkov too.

12. The Architect - dEUS

13. The Player - Daan

14. Time - A Brand

This was MINE!!!

I'm so glad you liked it; I was getting worried it was a bit crap and too old-school... it is quite a Brit rock sounding mix (tho they are not all British bands) - hopefully it's a good mix with something for everyone :D

Oh, and the Icelandic was Welsh :P

Thanks for the lovely detailed review btw xxx

1. Pop rock this is. Good for an intro track. Sounds a bit familiar. Can't help moving to it.

I thought it made for a good intro too, upbeat and foot-tapping. A pre-Britpop band from the very early 90's; kind of a one-hit-wonder. It's one of those types of songs that has been around a long time and has probably been used in loads of film soundtracks.

--- 1. Can U Dig It? - The Mock Turtles (1991)

2. Drums. Very cool beginning; somewhat reminds me of Devotchka. I like this a lot! An instrumental track and quite different from the one before

A last minute inclusion & I'm not sure why I picked this over the others on this album...if you really liked this check out their other songs if you can (on their myspace), cos the singer's voice is amazing...very soulful. Quite a new band, they are Australian. Kind of electronic-indie. Pretty good.

--- 2. Drum Song - The Temper Trap (2009)

3. This I like as well. Brit rock. Cool guitar work. I'm moving to this too.

Funny, you should say Britrock, cos they are actually Swedish but sound a lot Beatles/Oasis -ey. A lot of their songs sound like they were from the 60's. This song actually reminds me of The Hives more than anything tho. This is a new-ish band for me; I've only recently discovered them, but have got 3 of their albums now and I'm enjoying them a lot.

--- 3. God Knows - Mando Diao (2004)

4. Violins for the beginning. It's nice but I'm not so keen on it.

Aw, I'm sorry you weren't that keen. This is one of my favourite songs ever. It's very clever. All the lyrics start with the letters f e a r ("Forget everything and remember") This guy was the singer in the band that did track 10; he's a British national treasure (he's everything Liam Gallagher would like to be) ;)

--- 4. F E A R - Ian Brown (2001)

5. Cool beginning. Is this a cover? I really really like this one. "Relaaax!" Has a bit of 70s rock influence in it, I'd say.

No, not a cover, it's brand spanking new, tho' it does sound very retro I agree. This is the one band I wanted to showcase, hoping I could win them over some new fans. (Track 16 is theirs too) The are a London band, indie-folk I think they describe themselves. I'm not even sure if they have been signed yet and they have been likened to Fleet Foxes quite a lot, but I think they are rockier and more upbeat. Again, they have their songs on myspace - check 'em out :D

--- 5. Oh Really - Goldheart Assembly (2009)

6. Electronicish start. Not too keen on this actually. Seems like a remix, maybe?

A Danish band that I tried out a few months back, some of their stuff is OK, this is one is nice..not great but nice. I thought it made a nice relaxing break between the rockier tracks.

--- 6. To The Lighthouse - Moi Caprice (2005)

7. Acoustic at the beginning. Interesting sound takes over. This one is nice; instrumental.

A local, Welsh band - kind of electronic folk, they do use a lot of intersting instruments and sounds. All their tracks are sung in Welsh tho, so I used one of their instrumentals.

--- 7. Sonar - Brigyn (2004)

8. Very cool guitar work. "nanannana" Is it the same artist as the 5th one? Awesome. Can't wait to see who this is!

No different band entirely, tho the singers' voices are quite alike, so I see why you would think that. Very Brit-pop era band. They were a biggish name in 90's, had a very Indian/Asian feel to some of their music. I loved them! (still do). They are still going strong I believe. This song is a cover, apparently it's a Deep Purple song..but their version was a cover too..

--- 8. Hush - Kula Shaker (1997)

9. This one is acoustic. It's nice. Not big on it, though.

Acoustic and very mellow, I like it, especially the lyrics, tho the rest of his album was too run-of-the-mill.

--- 9. Emily - Stephen Fretwell (2004)

10. I really like this one. Is it old? It's poppish, still I like it a lot. Some really good guitar work in it.

And you should like it - it's great! Old? Yeah, very. This is one of my favourite bands and I could talk for hours about them. I had to include one of the tracks off their debut album cos that album is 20 years old this month. This band/album has been a major influence on hundreds of bands since then imo. There's loads of their tracks I could have picked, but some are fairly recognisable. This is one of the leser-known but still brilliant ones. Aw, I'm very glad you liked this - you won't be disappointed if you check out their other stuff :D

--- 10. Made of Stone - The Stone Roses (1989)

11. This one is very nice. Poppish as well. But I very much like it.

Another Swedish band that I've only recently discovered so I don't know much about them. Despite their name, they are a band, not one person. Their current single has been on the radio a lot lately but this one was on their myspace page and I liked it better than the single.

--- 11. Song For No-one - Miike Snow (2009)

12. Quiet, acoustic beginning. Women's voice. Adele, is it? Sounds like her though I don't know her music that well so I'm not sure. I quite like this and how it takes up. Her voice is amazing :)

Not Adele, but similar. This girl is Scottish, very young; kind of folky, very acoustic sound. This was one of only two tracks I included especially for you (Mew was the other ;)) based on some of your last.fm artists, I kind of guessed/hoped you might like this.

--- 12. Run - Amy McDonald (2007)

13. Very different approach now. A bit of electronica. This I really like. Didn't expect it, honestly. Deffintely a standout.

This band I  at the moment especially the current album - it's been a highlight of 2009 for me. I wanted to put one of the singles on here, but wasn't sure how recognisable they were, so I stuck the instrumental on instead. I highly recommend the rest of this album.

--- 13. Swarfiga - Kasabian (2009)

14. Nice at the start. Violins. Quiet nice and catchy. I like it; very cheery.

Another old-school band that I could talk at length about. More 90's Brit rock, this reminds me of teenage summers :D I really included this song for the fiddle, more than anything. I think there should be more songs these days with violin like this. I love how it ends.

--- 14. Here Comes Everyone - The Wonder Stuff (1991)

15. Ah, this one is Mew's! :) But I don't know it. New album, is it? Still haven't listened to it. But I'm glad to see them on here.

Yes! Mew :) ahhhh, I just love Mew. I knew I had to include some on my mix, then I matched with you, saw Mew on your last.fm page and had to take Small Ambulance off! :P I noticed you didn't have any of their new stuff listed so added this one for you. It's off the new EP, a definite b-side but one of their better b-sides imo. Relaxing and chilled. The new album is great, I highly recommend it. :D

--- 15. Swimmer's Chant - Mew (2009)

16. Ukulele. Sounds live. It's quite nice :)

Live - yep. Ukulele - yep :D This song was called The Uke Song at one point, but I think it's correct title is Bodies Underground. Same band as track 5, but shows a folkier, quieter side to them.

--- 16. Bodies Underground - Goldheart Assembly (2009)

A Welsh band, again Britpop, but this was one of only a few tracks of theirs sung in Welsh. It was one of those hidden, bonus tracks that you get at the end of a cd and I wanted my mix to feel like it had a bonus track at the end, so I stuck it on. Plus, I adore this song. I'm glad you liked it :D Cool that you thought it sounded like SR, but really the two bands are not alike at all.

--- 17. Gyda Gwen - Catatonia (1996)
