The 4th Mixtape Exchange

Featured Replies

I'm very possitive that it's Amy Winehouse's song. But she doesn't sound anything like Norah Jones. Somebody made a cover then

No, im just really bad at picking out artist i don't know. they all sound the same to me.

Nice one.

:D

*bows* Why, thank you.

Tori Amos actually had a collaboration with Damien Rice in a song called The Power of Orange Knickers, I was considering it for my mixtape, but I chose Jamaica Inn instead. Misstep

Psh, for gods sake I didn't recognize Jason Mraz so even if Damien was on there I probably would've been like "OMG I KNOW THAT VOICE" and lost any musical credibility I had in the first place.

*runs off to download collab anyway*

Righto. Deets and shit.

1. Manic Street Preachers - Faster

2. The Boxer Rebellion - Flashing Red Light Means Go

HA! I knew it was a boy's tape :P

Thanks for the list & thanks for the mixtape. I'm gonna check ^these bands out for sure!

:D

Track 1 - Aww I know this one: it's Actor Out Of Work - St. Vincent. This song is amazing, I love her voice. I like the way you started the mixtape, very much!!

Track 2 - Hmm.. I like the vocals... It's a calm song. Beautiful melody!! This band is from the 80's I guess :)

Track 3 - Oh man this one is amazing as well. I like when the instruments come more intensely in the middle of the song...His voice is sooo beautiful, then the effect is absolutely awesome. I'm curious to know who is singing!!

Track 4 - I realized how good this song was when I listend to it for the 2nd time. Good drumbeat, it makes the song a bit catchy. The guitar is really good as well.

Track 5 - What a lovely song! The beggining is great. :nice: I really like the "oooohhhhh". It's relaxing! Soothing vocals.

Track 6 - I like everything, the melody, the "hey!":P BEAUTIFUL.

Track 7 - I love the beggining very much. The guitar solo is AWESOME. Great song!!

Track 8 - Cheery and lovely :) It makes you feel happy!

Track 9 - I like her voice, it's sweet. It's not really my cup of tea , but she has a very nice voice... Anyways, as soon as I discover who the singer is, I'm possibly going to check other tracks!

Track 10 - I like this one. Also very relaxing.

Track 11 - Woot, this is really beautiful. I love the melody. Possibly one of my favorite tracks. 2:14 - I like the beat.

Track 12 - Wow this one is very good too. It's quite different from what I usually listen to but it makes your mixtape special. Really nice track.

Track 13 - This song surprised me... When it started, I was not expecting to hear a guitar :P!! I LOVED it!!

I'd like to thank very much whoever sent me this amazing mixtape. I wanted to be impressed and you definitely made it. This mixtape is GREAT!

That was mine! :D

I'm so glad you liked it. I had no idea what you'd like! Though I tried to get some insights from around and found out that you liked St. Vincent which I was gonna use in my mixtape regardless, but it was good to know you'd be liking one of them for sure hehe.

So, here's the list:

1. Actor Out of Work - St. Vincent (Actor, 2009)

As you said so yourself, it's a great song by a great new female artist. Her uniqueness and music abilities really are outstanding.

2. Just Like Honey - The Jesus and mary Chain (Psychocandy, 1985)

This was an 80s song indeed. It's soothing and beautiful. I highly recommend their album "Psychocandy" :)

3. Painter In Your Pocket - Destroyer (Destroyer's Rubies, 2006)

It's a one man band consisting of Dan Bejar. His lyrical genius and rocky tunes seem to never fade out. He just keeps getting better and better with every new release. I'm so glad you liked him. I very much recommend him and this album in particular :)

4. Never Stops - Deerhunter (Microcastle, 2008)

Another shoegaze track. I've been so into shoegaze lately it's mad! Anyway hehe, I'm glad you gave this another chance. It's just so good. And the whole album is great. It got some really good reviews upon its release. I highly recommend it too :)

5. No One Does It Like You - Department of Eagles (In Ear Park, 2008)

It's a beautiful mesmerising song and I just can never get enough of it. The band is a side project for Daniel Rossen (one of the members of Grizzly Bear). The sound in this one is very similar to the sound in most of Grizzly Bear's Veckatimest's songs. So I recommend you both albums. "In Ear park" and "Veckatimest".

And here's a song from Veckatimest that pretty much gave Grizzly Bear all the fame they truly deserve: :)

[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tjecYugTbIQ]YouTube - Grizzly Bear - Two Weeks (music video in HD) Veckatimest out now[/ame]

6. 2080 - Yeasayer (All Hour Cymbals, 2007)

It's from a great debut album by Yeasayer. A psycheadlic folk/rock band. Recommend them as well :)

7. Lay Low - My Morning Jacket (Z, 2005)

I felt like ending the louder bits in my mixtape with this song's great solo at the end. The album is an absolute masterpiece. Hiiighly recommended!

Here's a great live one of it :D (Aaaah!)

[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9WbFqn3D7eY]YouTube - My Morning Jacket - New Years @ MSG - Lay Low (end jam) (HD)[/ame]

8. Rocky Dennis' Farewell Song - Jens Lekman (Oh You're So Silent Jens, 2005)

I love Jens Lekman. His beautiful quirky lyrics and those amazing musical arrangments in his songs are so hard to resist. This song is one of his quieter ones, he has a lot of other dancy and popish ones.

P.S: He is so cute too

9. Dance, Dance, Dance - Lykke Li (Youth Novels, 2008)

It's one of the sweetest songs ever from a very good debut album. Mainly, electro pop, it is. I hope you will be giving this album a listen :)

10. And Sleep Al Mar - Au Revoir Simone (Verses Of Comfort, Assurance, and Salvation, 2006)

I chose this song to set down the tone a bit in the mix with a darker feel. I can't say much about this band as I am still new to them but I surely recommend them :)

11. The Rip - Portishead (Third, 2008)

This was a last-minute add as I felt like I had to share their musical genius with you regardless of being sure you'd like it or not. But you did indeed! I'm so glad. This song, to me, is one of the most beautiful songs ever written. I probably recommend you start with this album and go back to their rest. But my favourite is definitly their debut; Dummy. :)

12. Alligator - Grizzly Bear (Horn of Plenty, 2004)

This album, I think, is their least accessible one. But nevertheless, this song is one of those little gems that make you so glad you got to discover again. And I mainly chose it to end the darker more low feel to the mix and to give more chance for the following song to boom. As I said before I very much recommend these guys to you :)

13. Bear - The Antlers (Hospice, 2009)

This album is an absolute masterpiece. It's one of the saddest most haunting and beautiful albums ever written.

The album tells an explicit story (in first and second person narrative) of a man losing a loved one to bone cancer and watching her die in the Sloan Kettering Cancer Ward while he is beside her. Memories' date=' regret and grief occur throughout the album.[/color']

This song comes in the middle of the album so the ending part cuts off as originally it is continued by a following song but I just love how it breaks at the end and thought it'd be suitable for the mix. And I just love the ending lines "we're just too old/we're not old at all." :)

The song tells the story about a couple who' date=' during the first few weeks of an unplanned pregnancy, considers abortion and at first, think nothing of it. The use of the words "cub" and "bear" refers to the initial fear of the infant's birth and its growth into adulthood respectively. The couple later regrets their decision and goes through psychological discomfort, growing apart as a result.[3'][4] The chorus of the song has an obvious state of change in the story's narrative perspective; "we're just too old / we're not old at all."

--------

Again, I'm so glad you liked my mix. It was my absolute pleasure :nice:

Ok here is my review so I don't keep my maker waiting.

Track 1:Its a rap/hip-hop song and sounds increasingly familiar the more I listen to it. I can't pick it. I didn't really like on the first listen but after the third listen I rather enjoy the beat. The chorus sounds like something anyone and everyone could sing and has a great rhythm."This is the beat that my heart skips".

Track 2:I'm not sure how to describe the song. The singers voice is like a cross between Brandon Flowers and Franz Ferdinand. Popish though. The chorus is good. Sorry for lack of other information.

Track 3:This song also sounds very familiar. Typical love pop/rock song sung by a female artist. Nice uplifting track.

Track 4:Very catchy techno beat with electric guitar for to support the melody I think. The melody is very catchy and strong. "I'll never see you again.”Lyrics sound like tongue-in-cheek.

Track 5:Similar to the previous track. Possibly the same artist (?). Artist sounds like he is shouting at times but overall I really enjoyed this track.

Track 6:Starts off with a hushed synthesiser and a base guitar strumming. Build-up is used nicely with electric guitar coming in and the voice getting louder. The chorus quietens down a bit but with repetition it becomes very strong: "This fear has got a hold of me". Ending is excellent.

Track 7:This track really surprised me. Its a smooth, motown, bluesy, cover of Nelly Furtado's Maneater. The artist sounds like Michael Buble and is really enjoyable to listen to. It brings an atmosphere that the song didn't capture in its original version. Definitely worth listening to.

Track 8:Another blues like track focus around the line "Love is a losing game". Something one would listen to on a rainy Sunday afternoon. The voice is of course female and sounds much like Norah Jones.

Track 9:Very much in the style of Amy Winehouse. The verses fall into the strong motown genre but the chorus is much more powerful, almost sounding like ABBA. "I will never forget you".

Track 10:Starts off with some slow piano chords and deep verses before launching into a full bands of electric guitar and drums pounding. Verses resume with more power then before and with female backing vocals. The melody is full of momentum and the guitar support is incredible. My favourite track on the mix.

Track 11:Nice and rhythmic piano beat throughout the song as the singer tries to convey the lovely message to never stop living to his love.

Track 12:Acoustic country style guitar strumming with a drum beat. Is about all the things the singer will do to keep his darling.

Track 13:Back to the female artists with mainly sythesisers for the musical accompaniment. Singer voice is full of atmosphere and meaning and the chorus is a release of this energy

Track 14:A remix of the classic Kyle Minogue song "Come into my world'. Nice way to end the tape.

Overall I really enjoy the tape though some tracks weren't in my taste. On the whole, I feel that listening to these songs increased my musical knowledge and gave me experience at review mixtapes, even though I'm not very good at it. Thankyou to whoever made this tape.

That was me!

I'll be honest, I had a mini nervous breakdown making this one. I had various technical difficulties which meant it was late and that added to the pressure I already felt - you're a prolific poster and I didn't want to let you down! I don't know anything about your music taste but I saw on your profile page that your fave Coldplay album is VLVODAAHF, so I took a hunch that you might be more open to pop than a lot of the folks around here...

Track 1 - The Beat That My Heart Skipped, Dan Le Sac v Scroobius Pip

Without doubt the strangest act I've ever seen live - If you're in to Poetry (or Spoken Word as the cool kids are calling it over here) or hip-hop that's a little leftfield, you should check them out

Track 2 - I've Been Losing You, A-ha

This song is actually over 20 years old. I dug out my old A-ha stuff recently and decided it would be appropriate to put one on my mix. They were the Coldplay of my youth!

Track 3 - Hands Clean, Alanis Morrisette

My favourite track of hers. I love how she tells a story. You get such a vivid picture of the total git she's singing about in this song

Track 4 - Campus, Vampire Weekend

LOVE this album and this is my fave track on it. Saw them live last autumn and they were great. They just make perfect 3-minute pop songs

Track 5 - Too Fake, Hockey

A new band - or at least they're new over here. I saw them on Jools Holland and really liked them, but they've not released an album here yer

Track 6 - Death, White Lies

I'm seeing them at the Coldplay gig at LCCC so I've been trying to get in to them, this is my fave so far

Track 7 - Maneater, Boy Kill Boy

A gem from Jo Whiley's Live Lounge. I HATE the original, but this bluesy version got under my skin. I'd never heard of the band before I heard this, but it was enough for me to buy their album and I really like them now.

Track 8 - Love Is A Losing Game, Amy Winehouse

Everyone tends to focus on Rehab and Back To Black, but this is the best track on the album... and the lyrics got included on a English exam at Cambridge University last summer!

Track 9 - Never Forget You, Noisettes

Just a fun pop song, I thought the Mowtown feel of it would follow on nicely from Amy's bluesy soul. Also, I wanted to include a few female singers on my mix as they tend to be AWOL on a lot of peoples tapes.

Track 10 - Arts & Crafts, Red Light Company

I'm so glad you like this one!!! They're a new band and they've had a couple of minor hits... I don't know why they haven't broken through yet. Saw them live a few months ago and I think they have great potential. The album is called Fine Fascination and is full of great tracks

Track 11 - Silent Sigh, Badly Drawn Boy

Taken from his soundtrack to About A Boy. The soundtrack is really clever. It sounds like the kind of stuff the main character would listen to, and accompanies the story perfectly, but as an album it stands up on it's own as a great piece of work

Track 12 - Candy, Paulo Nutini

He just makes the kind of music I like to listen to on a lazy summers day - gentle, acousitc and upbeat.

Track 13 - Rabbit Heart (Raise It Up), Florence & the Machine

The woman of the moment, everyone is talking about her over here. This is the breakthrough single, but I hear that the rest of the album is quite different

Track 14 - Come Into My World (Fischerspooner Mix), Kylie Minogue

So putting Kylie on a mix for an Aussie is like sending coals to Newcastle, but I love her! Tried to mix it up by putting a mix on that you may not have heard before. It's from an album of mixes called Boombox.

I'm glad there was some stuff on there you enjoyed, and apologies again for keeping you waiting!

Track 5 - Too Fake, Hockey

A new band - or at least they're new over here. I saw them on Jools Holland and really liked them, but they've not released an album here yer

Yay Hockey. I like them. I almost put Time To Lose on my mixtape :)

Album gets UK release in Sept "Mind Chaos" - it's on my to-buy list :D

D/loading

so here's my review.

1. The start sounds familiar… nice sounds, nice overall feeling. The vocals are undecipherable.. I like it, as a starter. Cool electronic feel.

2. Some ethnic-like vocals to start, African feeling. The vocals keep going this way. Familiar male voice now. It feels like a normal pop-rock artist trying to make something different and creative, but I’m not into it.

3. Nice alternative-sounding intro. Drums fading on calmly, the singer’s voice flows smooth and quiet. Some violins in the background. Reminds me of Queen, but not so epic. Good, but I’m not loving it.

4. This is U2, of course. I like the music, I think I’ve listened to this before, but Bono’s lyrics totally ruin the song for me, as always. It’s just that I hate him. But I must say I like it more than other U2 songs that I know. Not so bad :P

5. Cool bass, and nice voice to start. This is gonna be great. This female voice… I think I know her. Downtempo, chilling beat. I’ve listened to this before too, I’m sure. Track 5, to my iPod 

6. This one is less ‘mainstream’ that the others. Some electronics too. Very appropriate instrumental to mark the middle point of the mix.

7. Classic feeling here. Fine guitars and quiet voice. Then a classic guitar solo kicks off smoothly. Like track 3, it’s fine, but I don’t love it.

8. More electronics here, and a broken male voice. More danceable, in fact I’m dancing :uhoh: Loving the beat, I like this one

9. This is Run, by Snow Patrol. I like it, but I have the feel that the guy’s voice has to kick off, louder, and it doesn’t. Too long for me, but still nice.

10. These sounds familiar too  I like this one, normal mainstread-like ballad.

11. I don’t know how to define this song. It’s poppy too, but it has some Caribbean-like feel troughout, with choirs and trumpets and tropical beat. But it’s still too poppy for me.

12. Another classic, I like it. Is this Led Zeppelin?

well, honestly i expected something different, less mainstream, but it's been a nice way of listening to those artists everybody seems to know but you.

 to numbers 1, 5 and 8

 to numbers 2 and 11

and i don't have a clue of who can the mystery mixtaper be.. thanks:)

That was mine. Oh well, I guess it could've been worse. I was afraid of it being too mainstream, but I guess I just don't listen to obscure enough artists. :\ I hope I'll do better on the next exchange when my music knowledge becomes wider. :D

oh, i'd have never guessed it was yours... maybe if there were any radiohead-ish songs... it wasn't bad, maybe i'm the wrong person or something

and well, WTF is that Sting song? i'm not used to hear this kind of things from him!

Here's mine, if you want..: http://rapidshare.com/files/268294632/Mixtape_.rar.html

This song comes in the middle of the album so the ending part cuts off as originally it is continued by a following song but I just love how it breaks at the end and thought it'd be suitable for the mix. And I just love the ending lines "we're just too old/we're not old at all." :)

Again, I'm so glad you liked my mix. It was my absolute pleasure :nice:

It was MY pleasure :) I'm sorry, as you can see, it was really difficult to write a review in English, so sometimes I think I didn't express exactly what i wanted to :( But anyways I really liked your mixtpe and I'm going to check other songs from these amazing artists that you picked. Thank you so much again!

6. 2080 - Yeasayer (All Hour Cymbals, 2007)

I didn't want to put Radiohead just because I knew for sure you already liked them. :P

And well, like I already said when I was making my mixtape, I tried putting on some songs I already liked and some I recently discovered, like Desert Rose, Don't Believe In Love and All My Love. I guess it just turned out too mainstream.

And downloading yours now! :D

That was me!

I'll be honest, I had a mini nervous breakdown making this one. I had various technical difficulties which meant it was late and that added to the pressure I already felt - you're a prolific poster and I didn't want to let you down! I don't know anything about your music taste but I saw on your profile page that your fave Coldplay album is VLVODAAHF, so I took a hunch that you might be more open to pop than a lot of the folks around here...[/color]

I didn't mind it being late at all, I can see you put a lot of effort in. Sorry about giving away a lack of hints about my musical taste. I suppose you could've always checked my last.fm page link in my sig. Despite this, i really enjoy your tape. I feel honoured that you called me a prolific poster. You have been around much longer than myself.

Kite, did i not hear you say that you were doing a big link update on the first post this weekend?

You did, and because of my watching of cricket it slipped my mind.

Well I got here a few months before you but you've made triple the number of posts! I always enjoy reading what you have to say :)

Never thought about the last.fm thing - don't know how it works and don't have an account/page/whatever myself so it never occured to me :embarassed:

Finally received my mixtape, will post the review later, I don't have time right now to listen to it with my head cold

Done!

1: This song is great  The voice sounds familiar, Death cab for a cuttie maybe? I'm not sure, though, it could be Band of Horses

2: Based on piano and guitar 2 or 3 chords sequence, but I just don't like his voice at times, it makes the song kind of pop.

3: Acoustic guitar, some cool arrangements on electric clean but with reverb guitar, Nice song, nonetheless, his voice lacks power.

4: I know this one, or at least have heard it before somewhere, his low tone voice may be annyoing and repetitive at times, but music is kind of dreamy, I'm eager to know who's this.

5: Excellent! The intro reminds me a bit of the beggining of coldplay's poppy fields, strings arrangements during chorus the dude has a low agreable voice. Let me know who's this as soon as possible

6: Good song, love the guitar tone and durmming

7: Holy shit, this is amazing, His voice reminds me a little of red hot chilli pepers, which is kind of disappointing because it's such a good song, his voice doesn't fit with this excellent music unfortunately, but still I like the song.

8: Sky is falling out and there's an angel on the groud it's getting cold(er?) Catchy chorus, very nice song. I like it.

9: Acoustic guitar and an electric one like reggae. Sounds familiar. Despite not liking much the style of the electric guitar that makes the rythm I like the song.

10: Simple but great

11: Two weeks by Grizzly Bear. What else can I say?

12: Some electric guitar arpeggios, and a voice that reminds me just a little of the smiths, but with somethng different. It's cool I like it

13: Sorry but I don't like this one

14: Smashing Pumpkins

15: What a perfect way to end! I can't get it out of my head now, and it's not a shitty catchy mainstream song, it's a cool indie one.

As a conclusion I enojyed a lot my mixtape, being a nice bunch of indie/altenative songs.
