I was planning on having a mix-mix tape of all the tapes mixed together at the weekend.

I was planning on having a mix-mix tape of all the tapes mixed together at the weekend.

It would be a very long playlist.

  • Author

All the mixtapes in iTunes and listen to all of them one after each other if I get the time :)

Where.....is......my.......mixtape?

Ever seen the live dvd 2003? Chris tells Guys that Nole Gallagher said he looks like a geography teacher and they lol, so it says "World Geo" and Guy says "Turn to page 50" :p

Right, I've given mine one full listen. Tempted to write a review now based on first impressions but....I won't...want to listen again and write tomorrow...plus it's late now..*yawn*

First impressions tho'...not a single track that I already know/have heard, so that's good news (I wonder if my mixer did their homework on me..) tho I do have a few ideas on band/artist..:sneaky:

Track 1:

Even from the first second it already gives a great impression. A sudden change is expected, but I was really shocked. It turns out to be just an interlude that leads to a heart-tearing piano stunt. Minor chords here and there to my liking. Oh it melts me like Elbow. I immediately love this song.

Track 2:

First, I thought it wouldn't be my cup of tea. A bluesy rock tune. A short one, only 2.59. It reminds me of Lenny Kravitz. Some wild guitar solo for outro. Second, for me it's the kind of song that requires multiple times of listening.

Track 3:

It sounded like a crossover between American and British music, maybe they're from Atlantis. It's like Goo Goo Dolls singing an Oasis song. Kind of repetitive. I was expecting a certain jump or at least progression, but it never came. And a long one too. Maybe lyric is their strong point, but it's hard to decipher.

Track 4:

The vocalist doesn't sound like he's fluent in English. But his voice is frail, the kind that would be magical if he sings the right song. The song slowly builds up, as contrary to track 3. It ends in a fade out manner but I think it was abrupt; it’s like missing the last part. Nevertheless I like it.

Track 5:

I have a mixed feeling about this song. I dislike the arrangement. The melody and the chords are good, but it mixed up in Jet's music style. The piano riff is brilliant though. I wish it could be a piano-only acoustic record.

Track 6:

Retro-ish intro, back to the British invasion era. Like track 6, the good guitar riff and vocal are mixed with rhythm that I don't really keen on. Not my cup of tea.

Track 7:

I love, love, love, love this song. One Evening by Feist. Her voice is soft, with some enticing accent. The kind of voice that can drown you in her bad intentions. The bassline discreetly leads the song. Small details orderly scattered, makes it complete. (Her album disappoints me though)

Track 8:

I felt like the first time I listened to Space. At first I was thinking, man your vocal sucks! But I then opened up to him, because his voice is in fact exciting to hear and listen to. The sounds funny, well maybe funny is not the right word. I’ll stick with exciting. Strange lyric, which is good. The song is kind of repetitive but I was willing to follow him all through the song. I like it.

Track 9:

I like the drums, blaring cymbals tuned to play only softly in the background. I failed to see uniqueness though. The guitar solo at the end is good and a wee bit Jonny-like (I'm not saying that It's good because it's Jonny-like), but it would fit a more depressing arrangement better. But again this is a song that I have to learn to like. It grew on me at take two.

Track 10:

It sounded raw, like a demo. I can't say much about this song. It left a weak impression, even after second hearing. Sounds like Coldplay at their pre-Parachutes era.

Track 11:

At first the vocal sounds annoying. But the song itself is good and fits the vocal. A thread of guitar riff perfectly placed on the chorus. A somewhat simplistic drumline fits the song well. It ends well too. In general I like the song, or maybe more (yeah, definitely more).

Track 12:

It started out good. The vocal is good. But as it progressed to the chorus, I felt underwhelmed. Even the vocal gets a little annoying. And then an excessively long interlude which turns out to be an outro. Okay, I got a little biased because it doesn't sound like what I expected, so I'll restart.

I still think that the drum is too epic for the song. It will fit radiohead-ish song better. The melody is good. But each instrument sounds somewhat crashed into one. Like a band which members have so many egos, and they play for themselves rather than for the band.

It will take me a while to appreciate this song.

Hello, I hope you liked the mixtape. Here's what you listened to :)

Band Name- Song (Album, Year)

1) Shearwater- On the Death of the Waters (Rook, 2008).

This was an excellent album from a rather underrated band. You shoud check it out, one of the best of 2008.

2) The Black Keys- 10 A.M Automatic (Rubber Factory, 2004)

I think Blues/Garage is a genre that divides people. I thought this was a good way to get into the mix after the relatively slow tempo of the last track.

3) Sun Kil Moon- Carry Me, Ohio (Ghosts of the Great Highway, 2003)

You're right about this being repetitive, and yep as with Mark Kozelek's work, its all about the lyrics. I find it very beautiful.

4) Destroyer- Foam Hands (Trouble in Dreams, 2008)

I've only recently started to listen to this guy. He reminds me a lot of David Bowie vocally. With each album he adds and adapts to what is already a pretty unique sound. Highly recommended.

5) White Rabbits- While We Go Dancing (Fort Nightly, 2007)

A six-piece band with two drummers who make pretty upbeat, dancy rock music. This is from their very solid debut album.

6) Deerhunter- Never Stops (Microcastle, 2008)

I'm sorry you didn't like this as I love it. A really great album from a very prolific group of musicians.

7) Feist- One Evening (Let It Die, 2004)

Isn't this great? I love its chilled, laid back feel.

8) Talking Heads- Once in the Lifetime (Remain in Light, 1980)

Iconic song from one of the most influential bands ever! (not that I'm opinionated at all). They make you want to dance and be happy in general. Genius.

9) British Sea Power- Oh Larsen B (Open Season, 2006)

I think you either love this band or you can't see what the fuss is about. They tend to juxtapose rather serious lyrics alongside upbeat rock music. Well worth a listen.

10) Elliott Smith- Cupid's Trick (Either/Or, 1997)

I wanted to slow things down a bit with this one. The late, great Mr.Smith had rather spider-web thin vocals which is maybe is why you thought it was a demo.

11) Frightened Rabbit- Head Rolls Off (The Midnight Organ Fight, 2008)

I find this to be very uplifting as you may have noticed from the lyrics. It has a very simple structure and it works perfectly with the vocals.

12) My Morning Jacket- Lay Low (Z, 2005)

Ah, it's a real shame you didn't like this. I thought the rather excellent outro jam was a great way to end a mixtape.

I hope you liked it overall. It was a pleasure putting it together :)

A message to my mystery mixtaper:

Just received the link to your tape, and I am beyond excited to listen to it! However, I have a VERY busy couple of days coming up, so please excuse me if it takes a few days for me to post a review. I promise I will do it as soon as I can though! Don't worry, I won't leave you hanging :P

1) Shearwater- On the Death of the Waters (Rook, 2008).

This was an excellent album from a rather underrated band. You shoud check it out, one of the best of 2008.

I totally dig them

2) The Black Keys- 10 A.M Automatic (Rubber Factory, 2004)

I think Blues/Garage is a genre that divides people. I thought this was a good way to get into the mix after the relatively slow tempo of the last track.

I know you have to  I'm not impressed at the first sighting but I'm sure I will like it

3) Sun Kil Moon- Carry Me, Ohio (Ghosts of the Great Highway, 2003)

You're right about this being repetitive, and yep as with Mark Kozelek's work, its all about the lyrics. I find it very beautiful.

:searchingthelyric:

4) Destroyer- Foam Hands (Trouble in Dreams, 2008)

I've only recently started to listen to this guy. He reminds me a lot of David Bowie vocally. With each album he adds and adapts to what is already a pretty unique sound. Highly recommended.

Surely I will get to know them

5) White Rabbits- While We Go Dancing (Fort Nightly, 2007)

A six-piece band with two drummers who make pretty upbeat, dancy rock music. This is from their very solid debut album.

gonna find out more obout them

6) Deerhunter- Never Stops (Microcastle, 2008)

I'm sorry you didn't like this as I love it. A really great album from a very prolific group of musicians.

I still haven't sunk into them after several hearing

7) Feist- One Evening (Let It Die, 2004)

Isn't this great? I love its chilled, laid back feel.

very!

8) Talking Heads- Once in the Lifetime (Remain in Light, 1980)

Iconic song from one of the most influential bands ever! (not that I'm opinionated at all). They make you want to dance and be happy in general. Genius.

1980?? I thought it's a mid 90's. WOW!! I have to listen more of them!

9) British Sea Power- Oh Larsen B (Open Season, 2006)

I think you either love this band or you can't see what the fuss is about. They tend to juxtapose rather serious lyrics alongside upbeat rock music. Well worth a listen.

I'm the latter :P. Maybe it takes time. I'm gonna have to understand the song thoroughly

10) Elliott Smith- Cupid's Trick (Either/Or, 1997)

I wanted to slow things down a bit with this one. The late, great Mr.Smith had rather spider-web thin vocals which is maybe is why you thought it was a demo.

As I said, it sounded like Coldplay in pre-Parachute era (not the song, but the record)

11) Frightened Rabbit- Head Rolls Off (The Midnight Organ Fight, 2008)

I find this to be very uplifting as you may have noticed from the lyrics. It has a very simple structure and it works perfectly with the vocals.

I'm not good at deciphering. But bottomline, I like it

12) My Morning Jacket- Lay Low (Z, 2005)

Ah, it's a real shame you didn't like this. I thought the rather excellent outro jam was a great way to end a mixtape.

I need to hear this some more time. Maybe it's just because I didn't get what I expected. The drum promises a strange, synthy, gloomy song. But I think this is the kind of song that I will like.

I love your mixtape, it showed me the things I've been missing.:thumbsup::thumbsup:

I made it :) I'm glad you didn't slaughter me with words.

1. Enya - Aldebaran It's in Irish Gaelic

Ah, no wonder it sounded like that soundtrack singer, she sang a couple of the songs!

2. Padi - Sang Penghibur This one is Indonesian. I put it here in case you didn't like the first song :P

Well, I liked both, but Im glad you put this one in Padi is definitely a group I will be checking out!

3. Beck - Everybody's Gotta Learn Sometime from Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind soundtrack. This one in case you feel left out by 2 foreign songs

4. Tori Amos - Jamaica Inn I like the lyric too.

Ah, it was Tori Amos. Didn't like her in the first place so Im glad to know that without knowing I still didn't like her! But, yeah, the lyrics were rather nice.

5. Moby - Extreme Ways from Bourne Identity/Supremacy/Ultimatum soundtrack.

Another group I knew was good but have yet to check out. I guess I need to now huh?

6. Amy Winehouse - Some Unholy War The greatest lyricist ever!!!

Downloading the rest of this album now...

7. Swan Lee - Tomorrow Never Dies A song originally made for the Tomorrow Never Dies movie, but ended up for Hitman game. I thought you will like it, but I was wrong :\

S'alright, can't like everything now can we?

8. Enigma - Camera Obscura I'm sure this wouldn't be everyone's pick of the day :P

Lies! Everyone should love this and if they don't there is obviously something wrong with them. :D

9. Schiller and Sarah Brightman - The Smile and this one too

10. Jason Mraz - Life is Wonderful I thought you would know it

 Of COURSE its Jason Mraz! I only have his latest album and know only radio singles other than that but now im off to once again download his other cd's.

11. Luciano Pavarotti and Aqua - Funiculì, Funiculà I have a strange taste, I know... It's in Neapolitan. This is a last minute addition, it explains why this one was placed rather poorly :P

I actually rather liked how it was just before the calming lullaby ending and yes I expect you do have strange taste as I never expected this, but it was an extremely welcome surprise!

12. k.d.lang - Golden Slumbers/The End from "Happy Feet" soundtrack. This is the first song I chose and I instantly know where to put it. At the end!

Thanks so much again for the mix! Even if I didn't like all of the songs, I'm still grateful for the new direction of music you are sending me in!

Okay, so much for saying I might be too busy to do a review tonight! Looks like I made time for it anyway. Maybe I need to prioritize better, but whatever, mixtape reviewing trumps all other responsibilities! :P Hahaha—like the album art you put for the mix! Anyway, here we go:

Track 1- Really pretty instrumental beginning… the violin/ string part is very nice, kind of sad sounding. Ooh… caught the Simple Gifts theme—is this Aaron Copland? Nice choice! It’s really pretty, something I’ve played before in ensembles in high school and always loved. :) I’m not sure if this is the original piece or not, but I really like the way it’s arranged. Nice start to the mix! :D

Track 2- Oh hmmm this definitely sounds familiar… oh this is John Mayer, isn’t it? I don’t listen to a lot of John Mayer, so I haven’t heard this track before, but I really like it! A bit more interesting than the other stuff I’ve heard from him: it’s nice to hear him jamming because he really is a great guitarist, and I think the stuff that is released as his singles doesn’t show that off nearly enough.

Track 3- This is kind of folky, which is nice. Not sure I love the singer’s voice, but that’s just a matter of personal preference I guess. It’s kind of hard to hear and understand the words. Other than that though, I like the overall melody and tone of the song.

Track 4- Hmm… is this the Allman Brothers? I don’t listen to this kind of music a lot, but this is definitely a nice relaxing track. :) Makes me think of going for a drive out in the country on a nice sunny afternoon. Definitely will add it to my playlist for my 7 hour drive back to my college next week (ugh)

Track 5- Cool opening with the drums. I like this track a lot, very simple with the percussion and vocals. I like the simplicity of the song a lot, it really puts a nice focus on the great lyrics! Nice harmonies too :) I really like how the piano kicks in at the end too. Definitely a fan of this track!

Track 6- Oh, very mellow. Kicks up a bit after a minute though, nice chorus. So far it doesn’t stand out too much to me. It’s definitely a nice song, no doubt, but nothing about it really catches me, you know? But again, I think that’s just a personal preference thing.

Track 7- Hmm, sounds kind of 80’s-ish. I think that’s because of the synth in the background. Gets really cool around the 2:30 mark, definitely a fun track! Very dance-y. Yeah, I know that’s not a real world, but that’s how I can best describe it. :P

Track 8- Definitely like the horn part, but eh, the vocals don’t do too much for me. They’re a little too repetitive I think. But the horn part is a nice change of pace: the trumpet part around 2:15 is cool.

Track 9- Wow, this song is pretty different but I really like it. Love the strings in the beginning underneath the vocal line. Very cool and unique melody and all kinds of interesting instrumentation! One of my favorites so far. :)

Track 10- I feel like I’ve heard this one somewhere before. Can’t say I love it so far, though I do like the duet in the vocals. I think country’s just really not my thing, but I can appreciate it for what it is. :P

Track 11- Ahh, taking things down a bit, are we? :P Really pretty opening, and great lyrics! :nice: This guy’s voice sounds so familiar, I think I recognize it from somewhere but I can’t put a name to it … aah, it’s gonna kill me that I can’t remember his name! :bomb: Wow, really pretty when the strings swell around 1:45 or so! Good choice, I’m really liking this! Beautiful lyrics and beautiful melody. Another favorite so far :wacky:

Track 12- Oooh, The Killers! Love them, good choice! :)

Track 13- This is fun, pretty different so far. Wish I could hear the lyrics a little bit more, but I guess that’s kind of the idea with this song. A little repetitive though, I found myself wishing it would build to some kind of dramatic ending and so it was a little anti-climactic. :P

Track 14- This is really pretty, though I wish I could understand the lyrics. :( It’s definitely got a very nice melody, but as someone who really likes to look for meaning in lyrics it’s too bad they’re not in my language! Maybe you can hook me up with a translation. :P

And of course… I wrote a friggin novel. I write like I talk, can you tell? :P Great tape, mystery person! :D There were a lot of nice tracks, and a few that really stood out to me, so you’ll absolutely have to let me know who they were ASAP. Tracks 1, 5, 9, and 11 were definitely my favorites, incidentally.

Thanks for all the great music! :D

Whoever did mine. I am dying here. I did seek out Heartbeats by Jose Gonzales. Amazing!

^If I am correct about who did yours, then they are away for some while.

---

I wonder if my partner is ever gonna listen to mine..

Haven't seem them around this thread yet :(

Ok, gonna review mine now, so I can get on with some important but boring stuff this afternoon...

I had to try to determine the order myself kinda like a puzzle which was fun, but one track had a different title so I didn't know where to stick that in the order...Anyway, I did the best I could :D

Track 1 - These.mp3

First impression - "this must be the Manics surely", 2nd/3rd/4th impressions - this is the Manics! I like it very much. I've not gotten into MSP beyond the singles so this was lovely to hear. Wee bit shoutey, but that is their style I know...but it's forgivable cos JDB has such a great voice. I remember always meaning to buy Everything Must Go at the time, but never getting round to it. And last year I was going to buy the Best of cd, but then forgot to...I'm useless I know...I ain't gonna make that mistake again - I'm definately getting some of their stuff now :D Thank u for putting this on!

Track 2 - Are.mp3

This is a grower I think, very intriguing, I'm liking it more and more. Good drumbeat, quite mellow after the first track. Vagely familiar sounding vocal, but I can't place it this time. The female vocal towards the end is a nice touch.

Track 3 - The .mp3

Nice guitary start, soothing vocal. It's nice but leans towards the slightly dull end of the spectrum. The cello in the 2nd half is its saving grace. Beautiful strings, almost haunting.

Track 4 - Songs.mp3

Lovely beginning. Nice shaky vocal. I like. Feels like I should recognise this vocalist, feels oldish, like 80's/90's. Nice chorusy bit then turns rocky! I like a lot. Love the undercurrent of strings.

Track 5 - I.mp3

Ah, now this one is lovely. Instrumental. Starts quiet, relaxing piano then it really kicks in, calms down (interesting xylophone usage haha) and builds again. Fantastic changes of direction all the way thru. I really like this. Sounds like it would be an epic live track.

Track 6 - Chose.mp3

Good drums again. Decent start, but then..Urgh, this track has taken a turn for the worst when the vocal starts. Awful vocals, both the girl and the boy, but especially the boy. Sounds noisy and confused now. Immature. Sounds Black Kids-esque, that sort of style. The music is decent, foot-tapping, but overall, I don't like this track. Fast forward.

Track 7 - For.mp3

First impressions - sounds La Roux-like. Subsequent listens and I'm guessing it is La Roux. Interesting....cos I didn't like the first single at all. I'm not keen on her voice. But Bulletproof is a good track. Undecided on this one. Vocal is better this time. haha creepy spoken bit in the middle, reminds me of the Thriller voiceover. Ok, I'm a wee bit won over by this track. It's decent, not as good as Bulletproof but I still won't be rushing out to buy the album. Sorry.

Track 8 - The.mp3

More electronic-y stuff. Instrumental. It's nice. Groovy. Interested to hear who this is.

Track 9 - Mixtape.mp3

Nice start. Good drumbeat again. Deep soothing vocal, almost like White Lies or Editors sounding on the vocal. I don't think it is either of those bands tho. Nice female oooh-oohs, good track, nothing amazing about it but has potential, I'd like to hear more of the same band. I went away from this singing Lions by Ian Brown - some similarities there.

Track 10 - Please.mp3

Another slow build. Almost dirge-like vocal. Short. It's ok, but not much to draw a listener in.

Track 11 - Enjoy.mp3

Starts well, rocky. I'm enjoying it. Then the guitar turns a little too heavy. Good drumming though, again, sounds bass-ey too, which I like. I like the main vocal guy, don't care for the second shoutey vocal. This has grown on me a bit, like it better on 3rd listen. What's he singing at the end? The repeated bit- I can't make it out.

Track 12 - was labelled as Track 7.mp3

I wasn't sure where this was supposed to go - so I stuck it at the end - not sure if you meant it to finish the mix but it makes for a good closing track. This one had all its info still on it so I tried deleting the artist name without actually reading it haha. It says 1997 so definately my era. I like this, this is more my sort of thing. Great drumming again, heavy in parts, subtle in others. Rocky track, but clever with it. I Like it. Ends really well. Would like to hear more.

----

Overall, a good mixtape - the first half of it I preferred over the second half, but it was all good, interesting stuff. Drums are a definite theme of this tape. And drums can really make a track imo, I'm a sucker for a groovy drumbeat so it's all good in my book. I'd be interested to know if some choices we tailored especially for me...

I think this was a boy's mix tho. I don't think a girl made this. (hope I'm not wrong on this..:\)

Highlights for me - tracks 1, 4, 5 + 12 - they made me want to hear more of the same stuff. Lowpoint was track 6.

Anyway, Thank you mystery mixer. Very good job

Ha, I didn't expect to see this for the next couple days, but really who needs priorities anyway? :P(says the person who has yet to start her summer homework :uhoh2: )

Track 1- Air and Simple Gifts

arranged by John Williams

performed by Anthony McGill, Itzhak Perlman,

Yo-Yo Ma, and Gabriela Montero

Really pretty instrumental beginning… the violin/ string part is very nice, kind of sad sounding. :D

I am beyond glad that you like strings because otherwise most of this mix would have failed horribly! This piece was actually arranged and performed for the inauguration of President Obama this past February, but yes the theme Williams used was from Copland's variation of Simple Gifts. Good ear with that.

Track 2- Who Did You Think I Was?

John Mayer Trio

Try!

Oh hmmm this definitely sounds familiar… oh this is John Mayer, isn’t it? I don’t listen to a lot of John Mayer, so I haven’t heard this track before, but I really like it! A bit more interesting than the other stuff I’ve heard from him: it’s nice to hear him jamming because he really is a great guitarist, and I think the stuff that is released as his singles doesn’t show that off nearly enough.

Yep John Mayer on vocals here. I too enjoy his guitar playing and jamming much more than his pop-ier singles and found a gold mine with the John Mayer Trio live album. He really lets loose and becomes the guitar hero we know he is, its really too bad he says his next album is going back toward his pop audience.

Track 3- How To Hang A Warhol

Little Joy

Little Joy

This is kind of folky, which is nice. Not sure I love the singer’s voice, but that’s just a matter of personal preference I guess. It’s kind of hard to hear and understand the words. Other than that though, I like the overall melody and tone of the song.

Aw, its to bad you didn't really like this one, I just figured you would know their single, The Next Time Around, and this album really became my summer theme so it was always going to be in this mix. Ah well, can't like them all now can we?

Track 4- Blue Sky

Allman Brothers Band

Eat A Peach

Hmm… is this the Allman Brothers? I don’t listen to this kind of music a lot, but this is definitely a nice relaxing track. :) Makes me think of going for a drive out in the country on a nice sunny afternoon. Definitely will add it to my playlist for my 7 hour drive back to my college next week (ugh)

Right again with the Allman Brothers. They are my dad's absolute favorite band and I grew up listening to their songs and love almost all of them so it was hard to pick just one in case you didn't like them. Their music is perfect for that nice summer drive especially this one, I'm glad you liked it.

Track 5- The Dance

Charlotte Martin

Stromata

Cool opening with the drums. I like this track a lot, very simple with the percussion and vocals. I like the simplicity of the song a lot, it really puts a nice focus on the great lyrics! Nice harmonies too :) I really like how the piano kicks in at the end too. Definitely a fan of this track!

This one almost didn't make it on here and I put it on last minute in place of a Missy Higgins song so I'm glad I changed my mind! Charlotte Martin in my mind is basically the queen of simplistic yet harmonious awesomeness and I think this track shows that quite well. Personally as a whole I enjoy her newest album "On Your Shore" a bit more than "Stromata", but both will give you the same basic result with strong beats and great lyrics.

Track 6- What If I Do?

Foo Fighters

In Your Honor [Disc 2]

Oh, very mellow. Kicks up a bit after a minute though, nice chorus. So far it doesn’t stand out too much to me. It’s definitely a nice song, no doubt, but nothing about it really catches me, you know? But again, I think that’s just a personal preference thing.

Hmm I'm not sure why I thought you would be a Foo Fighters fan, but this was another last minute inclusion that I thought would fit nicely in with the other folky/country songs yet give a more modern feel. Sorry you didn't like it I guess I can see your point about it not really having a grab to it, but for me Dave Grohl's voice can save any song :D

Track 7- Too Too Too Fast

Ra Ra Riot

The Rhumb Line

Hmm, sounds kind of 80’s-ish. I think that’s because of the synth in the background. Gets really cool around the 2:30 mark, definitely a fun track! Very dance-y. Yeah, I know that’s not a real world, but that’s how I can best describe it. :P

Yeah the synth does give it a bit of an 80's feel, music I'm usually not a fan of, but this group as you said about the track is very dance-y and makes a person feel good. And that along with the fact that I am in love with Ra Ra Riot right now are the reasons for it being in the mix.

Track 8- Amy

Mark Ronson feat. Kenna

Version

Definitely like the horn part, but eh, the vocals don’t do too much for me. They’re a little too repetitive I think. But the horn part is a nice change of pace: the trumpet part around 2:15 is cool.

As with many Mark Ronson creations this song "Amy" is actually a cover of the Ryan Adams song, but with much better arrangement and awesome horns added. I probably should have put Valerie with Mark Ronson feat. Amy Winehouse here instead, but I figured you would know that one and I think the horns in this song are just better.

Track 9- Mansard Roof

Vampire Weekend

Vampire Weekend

Wow, this song is pretty different but I really like it. Love the strings in the beginning underneath the vocal line. Very cool and unique melody and all kinds of interesting instrumentation! One of my favorites so far. :)

Go now and download this album, because you will love it if you loved this song. They are pretty amazing and refreshingly unique and I have yet to meet someone who doesn't like them.

Track 10- Old Enough

The Raconteurs featuring Ricky Skaggs & Ashley Munroe

I feel like I’ve heard this one somewhere before. Can’t say I love it so far, though I do like the duet in the vocals. I think country’s just really not my thing, but I can appreciate it for what it is. :P

You may have heard the original version on The Raconteurs album "Consolers of the Lonely". Yeah, country's kind of what I was raised on so I probably shouldn't have expected anyone else to like this, but I thought it was pretty cool that Jack White was broadening his horizons this extremely with a bluegrass song.

Track 11- Older Chests

Damien Rice

O

Ahh, taking things down a bit, are we? :P Really pretty opening, and great lyrics! :nice: This guy’s voice sounds so familiar, I think I recognize it from somewhere but I can’t put a name to it … aah, it’s gonna kill me that I can’t remember his name! :bomb: Wow, really pretty when the strings swell around 1:45 or so! Good choice, I’m really liking this! Beautiful lyrics and beautiful melody. Another favorite so far :wacky:

Yep, time to start to tone things down again. Im happy you liked this one, I wasn't sure which Damien Rice song was going to be on here until I sent it out because I love them all. You might have recognized his voice from the "Closer" soundtrack with the song "The Blower's Daughter" another masterpiece to me.

Track 12- Bling (Confessions of a King)

The Killers

Sam's Town

Oooh, The Killers! Love them, good choice! :)

Yep, Im glad you love them too. This is my favorite song by them.

Track 13- Snow Crystals

Apparatjik

This is fun, pretty different so far. Wish I could hear the lyrics a little bit more, but I guess that’s kind of the idea with this song. A little repetitive though, I found myself wishing it would build to some kind of dramatic ending and so it was a little anti-climactic. :P

Needed to represent Apparatjik on here. Im not much of an active Apparat-chick but I love them and this is my favorite song by them. Yeah, they're a bit repetitive, but their music is meant to be confusing and non-conventional so for them its to be expected. Except you couldn't really expect it could you as you didn't know it was them  Ah well, check out their other stuff if you haven't yet anyway because they're awesome and...yeah.

Track 14- Evaporar

Little Joy

Little Joy

This is really pretty, though I wish I could understand the lyrics. :( It’s definitely got a very nice melody, but as someone who really likes to look for meaning in lyrics it’s too bad they’re not in my language! Maybe you can hook me up with a translation. :P

Thought this would be a nice ending as it melts rather nicely with the "evaporar" or evaporation. Yeah I don't know Portuguese either and usually need lyrics to keep me interested as well so I understand your not being able to fully embrace this track.

Here's the lyrics and translation for you

Portuguese

Tempo a gente tem

Quanto a gente dá

Corre o que correr

Custa o que custar

Tempo a gente dá

Quanto a gente tem

Custa o que correr

Corre o que custar

O tempo que eu perdi

Só agora eu sei

Aprender a dar

Foi o que ganhei

E ando ainda atrás

Desse tempo ter

Pude não correr

Dele me encontrar

Ahh não se mexeu

Beija-flor no ar

O rio fica lá

A água é que correu

Chega na maré

Ele vira mar

Como se morrer

Fosse desaguar

Derramar no céu

Se purificar

Ah, deixa pra trás

Sais e minerais

Evaporar

The English literal (nonsensical) translation-

Time, we have

As we give

Run the race

Whatever it takes

Time gives the people

As we have

The cost to run

Run what cost

The time I lost

Only now I know

Learning to give

It was what won

And yet I walk ago

From that time has

I could not run

I find it

Ahh do not move

Hummingbird in the air

The river is there

The water is gone

Tide comes in

He turns March

How do you die

Would recede

Pour in the sky

If purify

Ahh leaves behind

Salts and minerals, evaporate

And the meaning translation-

we've got as much time as we give

whatever happens

whatever it takes

we give as much time as we have

it takes the things that happen

whatever the things that happen cost

only now I realize that what I got from the time I lost

was learning how to give

and I still chase that time

I was able not to run from it

[i was able to] Find myself

Ah, it didn't move

Hummingbird in the air

the river stays there

the water that ran gets to the tides

it becomes sea

it's as if dying was like debouching

like spilling over the sky

like a self-purification

like leaving behind salts and minerals

like evaporating.

And you thought you wrote a novel! This has got to be my longest ever post! Thank you very much for your kind words. I'm glad you didn't think it was absolute rubbish, and good luck with your busy-ness over the next couple days. :)

Nice one.

Track 11- Older Chests

Damien Rice

O

Yep, time to start to tone things down again. Im happy you liked this one, I wasn't sure which Damien Rice song was going to be on here until I sent it out because I love them all. You might have recognized his voice from the "Closer" soundtrack with the song "The Blower's Daughter" another masterpiece to me.

Tori Amos actually had a collaboration with Damien Rice in a song called The Power of Orange Knickers, I was considering it for my mixtape, but I chose Jamaica Inn instead. Misstep

Ok here is my review so I don't keep my maker waiting.

Track 1:Its a rap/hip-hop song and sounds increasingly familiar the more I listen to it. I can't pick it. I didn't really like on the first listen but after the third listen I rather enjoy the beat. The chorus sounds like something anyone and everyone could sing and has a great rhythm."This is the beat that my heart skips".

Track 2:I'm not sure how to describe the song. The singers voice is like a cross between Brandon Flowers and Franz Ferdinand. Popish though. The chorus is good. Sorry for lack of other information.

Track 3:This song also sounds very familiar. Typical love pop/rock song sung by a female artist. Nice uplifting track.

Track 4:Very catchy techno beat with electric guitar for to support the melody I think. The melody is very catchy and strong. "I'll never see you again.”Lyrics sound like tongue-in-cheek.

Track 5:Similar to the previous track. Possibly the same artist (?). Artist sounds like he is shouting at times but overall I really enjoyed this track.

Track 6:Starts off with a hushed synthesiser and a base guitar strumming. Build-up is used nicely with electric guitar coming in and the voice getting louder. The chorus quietens down a bit but with repetition it becomes very strong: "This fear has got a hold of me". Ending is excellent.

Track 7:This track really surprised me. Its a smooth, motown, bluesy, cover of Nelly Furtado's Maneater. The artist sounds like Michael Buble and is really enjoyable to listen to. It brings an atmosphere that the song didn't capture in its original version. Definitely worth listening to.

Track 8:Another blues like track focus around the line "Love is a losing game". Something one would listen to on a rainy Sunday afternoon. The voice is of course female and sounds much like Norah Jones.

Track 9:Very much in the style of Amy Winehouse. The verses fall into the strong motown genre but the chorus is much more powerful, almost sounding like ABBA. "I will never forget you".

Track 10:Starts off with some slow piano chords and deep verses before launching into a full bands of electric guitar and drums pounding. Verses resume with more power then before and with female backing vocals. The melody is full of momentum and the guitar support is incredible. My favourite track on the mix.

Track 11:Nice and rhythmic piano beat throughout the song as the singer tries to convey the lovely message to never stop living to his love.

Track 12:Acoustic country style guitar strumming with a drum beat. Is about all the things the singer will do to keep his darling.

Track 13:Back to the female artists with mainly sythesisers for the musical accompaniment. Singer voice is full of atmosphere and meaning and the chorus is a release of this energy

Track 14:A remix of the classic Kyle Minogue song "Come into my world'. Nice way to end the tape.

Overall I really enjoy the tape though some tracks weren't in my taste. On the whole, I feel that listening to these songs increased my musical knowledge and gave me experience at review mixtapes, even though I'm not very good at it. Thankyou to whoever made this tape.

Track 8:Another blues like track focus around the line "Love is a losing game". Something one would listen to on a rainy Sunday afternoon. The voice is of course female and sounds much like Norah Jones.

I'm very possitive that it's Amy Winehouse's song. But she doesn't sound anything like Norah Jones. Somebody made a cover then

Track 1 - Aww I know this one: it's Actor Out Of Work - St. Vincent. This song is amazing, I love her voice. I like the way you started the mixtape, very much!!

Track 2 - Hmm.. I like the vocals... It's a calm song. Beautiful melody!! This band is from the 80's I guess :)

Track 3 - Oh man this one is amazing as well. I like when the instruments come more intensely in the middle of the song...His voice is sooo beautiful, then the effect is absolutely awesome. I'm curious to know who is singing!!

Track 4 - I realized how good this song was when I listend to it for the 2nd time. Good drumbeat, it makes the song a bit catchy. The guitar is really good as well.

Track 5 - What a lovely song! The beggining is great. :nice: I really like the "oooohhhhh". It's relaxing! Soothing vocals.

Track 6 - I like everything, the melody, the "hey!":P BEAUTIFUL.

Track 7 - I love the beggining very much. The guitar solo is AWESOME. Great song!!

Track 8 - Cheery and lovely :) It makes you feel happy!

Track 9 - I like her voice, it's sweet. It's not really my cup of tea , but she has a very nice voice... Anyways, as soon as I discover who the singer is, I'm possibly going to check other tracks!

Track 10 - I like this one. Also very relaxing.

Track 11 - Woot, this is really beautiful. I love the melody. Possibly one of my favorite tracks. 2:14 - I like the beat.

Track 12 - Wow this one is very good too. It's quite different from what I usually listen to but it makes your mixtape special. Really nice track.

Track 13 - This song surprised me... When it started, I was not expecting to hear a guitar :P!! I LOVED it!!

I'd like to thank very much whoever sent me this amazing mixtape. I wanted to be impressed and you definitely made it. This mixtape is GREAT!

Righto. Deets and shit.

Forgive the track 12/track 7 fuck-up. I made this really early in the morning, and missed that out. :)

1. Manic Street Preachers - Faster

I hate purityHate goodness

I don't want virtue to exist anywhere

I want everyone corrupt

With these words, the song kicks in. A fitting opener to this mix, and a great song, the best track off The Holy Bible.

2. The Boxer Rebellion -Flashing Red Light Means Go

With a name like that, you'd think this would have been an obvious opener, but Faster won out. One of the best songs of the year so far. I urge all of you to check this lot out, as they really are amazing.

3. Grammatics - Time Capsules And The Greater Truth

Brilliant acoustic-y song, and a nice contrast to the rush of the first two tracks.

4. Puressence - Sharpen Up The Knives

A tense, not to mention intense, four minutes. It is indeed 90s material - from '97's Only Forever, incidentally my favourite album of all time. Again, massively underrated and overlooked.

5. 65daysofstatic - Radio Protector

One of my favourite songs ever written. A truly stunning piece of work, driven by who I consider to be the best drummer on the planet.

6. Johnny Foreigner - The End And Everything After

Favourite band around right now. Yes, the vocals aren't everyone's cup of tea, and clearly not yrs (:P), but you have to admit, it fits well after Radio Protector. Another slow song right after would have killed the thing, I think.

7. La Roux - Tigerlily

Yep, you guessed correctly. It is indeed La Roux. The vocals are certainly easier on the ear than some of her other stuff, and the chorus is, quite simply, magnificent. Favourite pop song of 2009.

8. Deastro - Pyramid Builders

Yay for instrumentals! The debut, Moondagger, is a brilliant electro-pop album in the style of MGMT and Merriweather Post Pavilion-era Animal Collective. Do yrself a favour and check it out.

9 + 10 - Wild Beasts - Two Dancers (Parts 1 and 2)

See what I did there? :D

Great song, and yes, as you said, the drumming!! These are the title tracks of their second album, which is out now, and is very good indeed.

11. Biffy Clyro - Liberate The Illiterate / A Mong Among Mingers

Nice little mini-epic we have here, setting things up nicely for the closer. You'll notice the song is made up of several 'movements' - very interesting song structure. Check them out, they are a band diverse as fuck.

12. The Longcut - Tell You So

I love how the song builds throughout, and the bass takes centre stage with that riff. Manchester band (Puressence are too), who released their second LP, Open Hearts, as a digital download in June. Seek it out and listen, well worth yr money.

Enjoy, everyone. Someone do me a favour and re-up it to Mediafire or something when it reaches its limit. :)
