Black Rose
Yes, everybody knows that the National Health System isn't perfect (too many managers, too much red-tape etc), but at least I know if I fall down the stairs and break my arm/leg and get rushed to hospital I wouldn't have to face a massive bill at the end of my stay. Josh42
The taxes you'd pay are far more than that. Find one thing that the government can run better than the private sector, then come talk to me.
Black Rose
Trains :P Private companies take all the profits away and give it to their shareholders, whereas under public ownership the profits are put back into the system for "improvements". The whole point is that no profits would be made. Look at the Postal service. Lost 16 billion dollars last year. UPS and FedEx are run a hell of a lot more smoothly too. No, but you'd wait for up to ten hours to have it fixed up for you. The taxes you'd pay are far more than that. Josh42
No, but you'd wait for up to ten hours to have it fixed up for you. Banks. You want the government running your banks? Personally, I'm sick and tired of this big brother government we have, and it's getting worse. I don't want anyone forcefully controlling my life, especially my health care. It should be a fair, completely voluntary mutual exchange between a doctor and a patient.
Black Rose
Would you prefer to be seen within 4 hours and be given a bill for £10,000 plus at the end? Hey Josh, I bet your one of those rich people who has one of those fully comp medical insurance cover jobbies so you can afford to go to hospital. My parents worked hard for their money. Seeing a doctor isn't a right, it's a privilege. It's already required by law that no one be denied Emergency Room service. Don't get me wrong though, I'm not some selfish asshole. I have no problem at all giving to charity, but I just don't want the government doing it for me. Black Rose
The biggest problem is with health tourists who come to this country just to get healthcare then bugger off back home.
Josh42
Well if they're showing up just for health care then they're just pumping money into our economy, which is a good thing.
Tonsu
You want the government running your banks? In case you didn't hear, the government of our country are now PAYING for the banks to be run - by the very same people that messed them up in the first place, and threatened the global money economy. Would you prefer to be seen within 4 hours and be given a bill for £10,000 plus at the end? No, I'd prefer to be seen within ten minutes and pay twenty five quid, as I did when I lived in Japan, which has a private healthcare system (my insurance, by the way, paid it all back to me). Tonsu
Yea, you just said that that's a good thing! No I didn't. I said it would be better for the government to run the banks. At the moment they are just paying for largely the pre-existing management (who caused all the trouble in the first place) to run them. Expect very much more trouble from this state of affairs soon. Matter-Eater Lad
If we had NHS my mom probably would have died from her cancer. She had a very rare form of cancer and there are only a few specialist in the nation, put the government in charge of that and who knows when she would have gotten treatment AND if she would have even been able to see the specialist that she had to to beat the cancer. In the NHS they want elderly will have less chance for medical treatment, it discriminates and puts value on lives. Maybe if your young and fit it sounds great, give it 20 years and we'll be complaining because we can't get treatment. So your frighten of a nationwide health-care system? Anyone that understands economics and our government should be! Our government can't even run the restaurants on capitol hill right, they come up negative each year. Its simple, the government is incapable due to corruption and incompetence to run health care, they can't even run the Post office for crying out loud. Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac are both government sponsored. They really did a good job preventing this mess didn't they! [/sarcasm] Another fine point, look at EVERYTHING the government is running and look how HORRIBLE its doing! Every government programs hemorrhages money, is corrupt, and the least efficient entity that can perform the task.

Saffire
Trains? Amtrak operates at a net loss every year: http://www.heritage.org/research/budget/bg2072.cfm It costs society more to run it than it generates in revenue. Healthcare? Explain to me how government can increase the supply of healthcare by taking over management of it. I'm not interested in how everyone can get "free" healthcare if they wait long enough. Explain how supply is increased, as well as quality. Elective surgeries like LASIK and cosmetic surgeries continually fall in price every year, while the quality of the procedures increases every year. Why? Because the doctors that perform these surgeries do it outside the traditional medical system, which is fraught with government intervention. The doctors must compete on reputation, name their prices up front, and continually improve their technology to attract customers. Banks? Heh. I just ate a large meal, don't make me vomit.
