Should Coldplay write "epic" long songs? =\

Featured Replies

So, does anyone think that Coldplay should try writing a few longer songs? As in, a song or two over 7-8 minutes? An "epic?" (yes, Coldplay have many "epic" songs, but in this case I mean length) I'm not saying ALL Coldplay songs should be longer, because then that would probably become too progressive for their style, but personally, I think every now and then, some nice drawn-out instrumental sections in a song would be nifty. Or not lol

I already searched to see if there was a similar topic, but didn't find one....sooooo, if there is one, I'm sorry for being a n00b lol

No, that would be terrible.

I love Bohemian Rhapsody.

It inspired my username here, my email, and etc. The daisy part is just my nickname at school. People call me daisy cause when I used to model people said I looked fresh like a daisy.

But the bohemian part...that goes to what I believe is the best song EVER written.

And Coldplay would be good at an "epic" song because they have that epic quality.

I would love an album full of those songs.

well its better if half of the time will be songs and half would be instrumental. Or like a medley like 'The Greatest Man That Ever Lived'(Weezer), then that would be, like, cool

Lengthy songs shouldn't be long for the sake of being long. You have to do it right and make it grand enough to warrant the extra time. I would certainly support an effort at, say, an ambitious album closer that continues to build over 6+ minutes, but it shouldn't drag needlessly.

Well said.

If chris wanted all the albums from now on to be under 42 minutes, there isn't going to be much space left for other songs after an 8 minute epic.

The live verstion of Everything's Not Lost lasts quite a while I think. I loved that sing-a-long, it was great. Oh the memories *sigh*

I like the escapist, thats good enough for me!

Chris is too ADHD to write a 10 minute song.

Thus the terribleness :laugh3:

I don't think they should...... Personally, I don't think Chris even has the concentration to make a song that long. :P Sooo, no.

I don't think thats the best idea for them to have a long song.... I feel that they just aren't ready to,

If they could choose a song with a very catchy chord progression that would lend itself to repetition over 7 or more minutes, and if they would throw in varying instrumentals, then yes it could be great. Whether it end up like Paranoid Android or Bohemian Rhapsody as a multi-part story, or even some longer Jeff Buckley tunes with many verses and a solo thrown in, it could be great if Coldplay added their own kind of twist.

LMAO so true.

That's sort of what we initially expected from 42. I think 7-8 is really pushing it though, as the material would have to be extremely interesting and not end up as dry as 'around the world' by oasis. nine times out of ten those kind of things fail miserably...however I felt the songs off VLV were much too short, splitting up the 'double-tracks' the average song is just over 3 minutes, while most of the tracks on AROBTTH were over five minutes. It was like they were insecure about the quality of the songs, as they often ended before you could get sick of them, or really begin to enjoy them.

In general I want the next album be much more patient, less like a sampler platter, and more like a three-course restaurant dinner.

Remember though, Coldplay isn't Oasis, or any other group. They seem to be obsessed with making sure no song they release falls flat. If they ever were to expand into an "epic", they would probably devote so much to it that it could not possibly end up repetitive or boring. I think it would be like a song from AROBTTH only longer and even more carefully brought out. Much like Frames songs started to be on 'For The Birds' album (Chris has an idea what I'm talking about). They were confident that they could let the songs develop and flourish rather than hooking people instantly, and it could behoove Coldplay to take a risk and try the same idea.

That's a good way of putting it. Or maybe just I like it because it refers to food.

Yes! They absolutely should! In fact, a cover of Bohemian Rhapsody by the boys and the remaining members of Queen (RIP Freddie...) would be the most mind-blowing thing since hearing 42 backwards or watching the South Bank Show. (it was GREAT.)

The studio version doesn't have nearly as much energy as the live version. The live version is amazing and always replaces the studio version on my player. I'll always tell my opinion on Up&Up as if it were the live version unless stated otherwise.
