Public Image Ltd member John Lydon has labelled music from bands like Coldplay and Radiohead "tosh".

The newly regrouped post-punk pioneers PiL kick off their UK tour tonight (15 Dec) at the O2 Academy, Birmingham.

Lydon may live in LA now, but he reckons the UK needs his band and his honesty, more than ever: "Coldplay and Radiohead bug the hell out of me because it’s so soulless. It just seems pointless. It’s nice, but it’s tosh. I’ve been out of this country for a few years and you seriously do need me back here to tell you what’s what," he explained. "That’s not me being awfully grandiose about it, but you need to get some sensibility together here. That grandiose idiocy."

John Lydon, also known as The Sex Pistols' frontman Johnny Rotten slammed Coldplay back in 2008 for creating boring music - insisting he felt sorry for fans who pay to see the "humourless" group perform live. Lydon, is convinced the Coldplay take themselves too seriously - and is adamant their music suffers as a result.

He says, "I pity the poor bastards who have to watch them. They are utterly humourless. I met them a few years ago, said hello and realised they were just men in anoraks. They looked like a gang of little poncy masturbators. There is no fun, they don't offer joy. Their music has a couple of quite nice tones here and there but it's a box of tosh (rubbish) sold to slightly inadequate, half-baked people."

He also name-checked Manchester band James, claiming the band has "pompous presentation".

Adding: "It’s too much with no content. They don’t care about you. They care about lining their coffers. There’s nothing about heart and soul, they don’t know about people dying, living, aspiring.

"They don’t sing those songs out of a sense of community. They sing them to you out of contempt, with fiddly studio gadgetry. Is this acceptable? Is this what you want? Well, you’ve got it in spades."

The PiL tour takes in dates at the Leeds Academy (16 Dec), Glasgow Academy (18), Manchester Academy (19), London’s Brixton Academy (21) and Electric Ballroom (22, 23).

As for how rehearsals for the PiL shows went, he responded: "It sounded excellent. Excellent."

In the past, PiL counted guitar legends Keith Levene and Jah Wobble in their ranks, but Lydon reckons it’s essential that the line-up continues to evolve.

"Of course, it was a wonderful privilege to work with very many PiL guitarists and people would love to talk about say, Metal Box. Public Image is an ongoing process right? We’re a runaway truck with none of your rules to tell you what’s what," said Lydon.

Is this man crazy??? :inquisitive:

I'm absolutely not the kind of fan who defends Coldplay with all one's might, becase I think every one is free to disagree with my musical tastes.

But my doubt is: What about all the other bands, who really think only about money?? I would have talked in these terms about Oasis for example...who their only interests are drugs, self-congratulation, alcohol etc.

Why mention only Coldplay an Radiohead, to advertise himself?? :wink3:

Coldplay & Radiohead's music is soulless?!?!?! & btw sorry but who the hell is this guy??? : \
Jonny Rotten knows what a soul is? :inquisitive:

Who? One of the nastier members of the Sex Pistols.

Also allegedly the guy who had his people beat Kele Okereke up for no reason: http://stereogum.com/archives/wheres_the_beef/john_lydon_and_kele_okerekes_punch_out_011187.html

Which kind makes anything he says irrelevant to begin with.

This guy, whoever the hell he is, can fuck off. He's just jealous because his band is not as popular (probably because they're shit). He sounds so full of himself too! As if we "need" him :bomb:
Erm... perhaps you ought to do your research before you go off like that and embarrass yourself. Even moronic legends are still legends. He's actually kind of far more popular in an entirely different way.

Errr excuse me Mr Lydon, but are you fucking insane?

There’s nothing about heart and soul, they don’t know about people dying, living, aspiring.

He is obviously not listening to the same Coldplay and Radiohead that I know of.

Eh, nothing new there then. I remember when he had a go at the band last year. What a complete and utter arrogant narcissistic jealous prick. Sorry if I offend anyone, or sound lame, but, I mean, was he off his head when he said this stuff?! The UK "need him to tell them what's what"??? W-T-F. We don't need him to tell us anything thankyou very much. Coldplay's record sales and staduim filled tour speak for themselves. :dozey: "That’s not me being awfully grandiose about it, but you need to get some sensibility together here." Um, actually that is being awfully grandiose. Wow, what an idiot.

"There’s nothing about heart and soul, they don’t know about people dying, living, aspiring."

I think that quote right there pretty much proves this man knows nothing about music. "Rockgod" or not. Is he actually listening to the same music that most of us are? :inquisitive: Pfft, whatever. Looks like Johnny Rotten doesn't want to swallow the fact that Coldplay are bigger and better than he'll ever be. Green envy, me thinks.

I know someone who's going to see Public Image Ltd on Friday in Glasgow. No surprise he says this because it's John Lydon isn't it?

Anyone whos EVER listened to a Radiohead album knows comparing them to Coldplay is like comparing gold to shit; it just isn't the done thing.

And - though Coldplay aren't exactly my cup of tea - I'd sooner listen to them than the Sex Pistols any day of the week.

Any criticism coming from a self-proclaimed punk, not to mention reality TV star and the face of Country life butter, really should be ignored.

well, he did have a go back in June last year, ironically around the time of Coldplay's VLVODAAHF release. Probably trying to latch on to a bit of publicity. Yusuf Islam did the same earlier this year when he was releasing his new material.
