Review time! Sorry mixtape maker for waiting this long!

Ok, here goes:

1. Dark and gloomy beginning. Quite interesting. I'm quite liking this. A female singing now.. wonder who it is.. very lovely voice! Bat for Lashes or Florence + The Machine I'm guessing..? Getting quite intense now. I'm enjoying this!

2. Yaay! I've always loved this! Simon and Garfunkel - Sound of Silence Nice choice.

3. Violins! A female voice again. Acousticy now. It's lovely. Not something I would listen to quite often, but it's enjoyable.

4. Acousticy beginning. Male voice now! Hmmm, it is a nice song but I feel the same about it as the previous song. It's a bit more out there, in a way. Not too special, unlike the first 2.

5. This one is different. Rockier than before. Sounds like the same singer from 4 though.. hmm. It's good, enjoyable. Not thaat special but yeah. I would definitley suggest Interpol or Doves, if you like this. Don't know why but this song reminded me of them. You probably can see the "specialness" I would've liked to hear in it too.

6. Same band from 5? Quite similar in style. It sounds better on second listen though. Much more than 5. Nice climax.

7. Violin start. Sounds dreamy, in a Disneyish way hehe. Hmm, probably my least favourite so far.. sorry =/

8. Grooveh! Is it an oldie? I quite like this. Dancy too! Hehe Love the short solo.

9. Awww! Quite old this is, right? I'm not sure of the band but I sure did hear this before! Love it. *dances*

10. Hehe, sounds familiar.. but I'm not sure. It's lovely. An old band again..? Singing along this time hehe. I've enjoyed this and the 2 before, thanks! :)

11. Wiiild thiing! You make my heart siing you make everything.. grooveeh. Yeaaah! :awesome: Don't know who sings this though.. haha.

12. Last song. Sounds like an 80s song! Lyrics are no English though. Makes you think it's English at first but then you find out it isn't hehe. It's nice. Schlafen wir..? It's not German either though hehe hmm. It's quite different from the rest, so thanks for that. Has some nice solo there.

It was a nice mix! Length was perfect, btw, I have to say. It's not too long, not too short. Some songs were ok and not my cup of tea, but I did enjoy quite a few. And I loved the hint of oldies :nice: Veeery intriguied to find out who the artists were! 'Cause I hardly recognised much hehe.

Thanks tons for the work mystery partner!

My mixtape reviewer is lazy :shame:

YAY! Well, I was your mixtape maker and it was quite the task! You and I have a very alike music taste and I had trouble finding things that you hadn't listened to... Minus the Lady GaGa and Ke$ha. Sorry about those, by the way!

Anyways, I'm glad you enjoyed it for the most part! :wacky:

IVET MADE MY MIXTAPE :D Thankyou, thankyou, thankyou for the tape. You did a great job. Now I've got a whole lot more artists to get into!

Maybe he or she is just thorough and wants to give it plenty of listens before they comment Thalia. They love the mix so much that they can't stop playing it... ;) at least that's what I hoping about my reviewer anyway...

I fucking LOVE them! Noise WOOO :D Have you ever seen them live (probably yeah)?

No :(

But I had a chance to see them :(

I might be seeing 30 Seconds To Mars later this year and Enter Shikari are supporting them! :D

Well, I’m finally getting to the good part of receiving the mixtape, and that is writing my review for it. I’m really sorry that it’s taken me this long to get to it. I know I said that it might be Thursday or Friday, but things went much faster than I anticipated, and so I’m able to do it now. YAY! :cheesy:

Before I get started on track analysis, I’d like to mention how much I appreciated you titling the mixtape, “For Violet.” Not only did this let me know that you knew who I was, it made me feel, in an odd sort of way, special. :wacky: Anyway, thanks for that.

Now, on to the music:

1. The start reminded me quite a bit of Bloc Party. I think it’s because the vocalist sounds quite a bit like Kele. I don’t think it is Kele, though. (I’m going to feel like an idiot if this happens to be something off of his solo album.) This number is very upbeat and has a really nice indie feel to it. I’m sitting here dancing in my chair as I’m listening to it. “Everything’s ending , there’s no use pretending.” “Tension grows. Just think of the children…” I like the lyrics that I hear, too. This was a great choice for an album opener. It sets the mood for music quite nicely.

2. This one starts off with a guitar bit, soon followed by a percussion entrance. It’s not quite as loud as the first number, but I get the same sort of feel to it. The song reminds me of something Two Door Cinema Club might do; the vocalist has soft, clean vocals, and the background music seems to fit into what they might do. This is, of course, a good thing, as I’m quite fond of Two Door Cinema Club. I can’t wait to find out who this is.

3. This one’s a slightly slower number. OOOOOH, that synthy entrance was very interesting. I was totally not expecting that. This is a nice overall intro. From what I’m hearing, there is more than one vocalist. That sort of thing I’ve never really understood. Anyway, while they’re not as agreeable with me as the previous two tracks, they’re still nice vocals, and I’m sure that the more I listen to it, the more it’ll grow on me. I can’t help but feel that I have an idea who this might be. I can’t really say for sure, however. Anyway, above all else, the background music is really catchy. :D

4. Heyyy, I actually know this one! It’s “Some Kind of Nature (feat. Lou Reed)” by Gorillaz. I’m glad you chose to put something on from “Plastic Beach;” that album is nice. I’m not sure if I would’ve picked this particular track myself, but it’s Gorillaz, so I doubt it would’ve mattered. Lou Reed doesn’t have the best voice in the world, but somehow, this song makes it kinda fit into place. I’m excited there was something I knew on here. It’s nice to sense some sort of familiarity in things like this sometimes, I think.

5. :D YAAAY, you put Florence + the Machine on here! You get double points for this one. The song is “My Boy Builds Coffins.” I wouldn’t have cared what song it was, though, because I love “Lungs.” Florence’s voice is so recognizable, and it’s a voice that I really enjoy listening to. Thanks a lot!

6. This is a softer number, with what sounds like bits of keyboards and soft percussion, maybe some bongos. The voice isn’t something I like, to be honest. I don’t know; it just sounds kinda weird to me. Nice addition of organ there in that bit, though. Organ should really be used more often in music, I think. “I will be the one who loves you the most.” Awww, how cute. :wacky: Actually, the vocal line is the only thing I don’t enjoy on this track. I’ve gotten to like voices that I didn’t like before, so don’t get discouraged that I don’t care for them right now. I may just need some more listens to allow it to grow on me. Anyway, the song overall has a nice feel to it. I still like it.

7. This one kinda has an old Mexican feel to it. :laugh4: I can’t think of any better way to describe it. At any rate, I thought it was rather cheeky. The vocals are soft and sweet, which is funny, because they’re singing, “Sweet, swee-ee-eeeee-eeet” at the beginning. I can’t help but feel I somehow recognize the vocalist. He sounds like a sweeter version of Guy Garvey from Elbow. What I mean by that is that while I get the same sort of rasp from him, it’s not nearly as husky as Guy’s voice tends to be. I think I may be overanalyzing this, honestly. Anyway, this track is pretty chill, and I like chill, so good job.

8. Ahhh, I see we’ve picked the tempo up a bit again. I hear lovely acoustic guitar. I like songs like this. This is quite an interesting voice we have here. While it’s not the greatest voice in the world, I find oddly fitting with this sort of music, for whatever reason. I get more of a folk feel here, which is perfectly acceptable, as I really enjoy folk music. I have a strong feeling this song will grow on me a lot over time. “Sha la la la la la.”

9. This seems quite a bit more somber than the previous track, which serves as a good contrast. The vocals on this sound similar to the previous track, oddly enough. I’m not sure if it’s the same person/group on these songs; I don’t think it is. Again, it’s the background that grabs my attention more on this song. I can’t really pick any lyrics from this song, as the vocalist is a bit difficult to understand. It’s like his words are slurred together into an unintelligible mess. Not that I dislike that or anything, because I remember feeling like this sometimes when I first got into Radiohead. I found Thom Yorke hard to understand on some of the numbers. :P

10. I know this one, too! It’s “Flume” by Bon Iver. This is one of those albums that I looked into because people on the forum were raving about it. As this is the opening track to the album, “For Emma, Forever Ago,” it was my first impression of Bon Iver, and I fell in love at first listen. Consequently, it’s one of my favorite Bon Iver tracks. Justin Vernon is amazing.

11. Heyyy, another song I know. This one is “Gold in the Air of Summer” by Kings of Convenience. I got into this duo rather recently, so I’m still trying to take the discography in. I didn’t recognize right away, honestly. However, once the vocals came in, it was unmistakable. This track has reminded me that I need to take better listens to Kings of Convenience, because they’re a legit acoustic duo. Thanks for the reminder. :P

12. This begins with drums, shortly followed by piano. The vocals are enjoyable on this. I love the contrast between duple and triple meter on this number. It’s stuff like this that gives a track texture. This is another one of those numbers that I kinda wanted to groove to, but in a bit of a different matter. It sounds like the tuning is a bit off on at least one of the instruments, but oddly enough, I don’t mind. I think I’ve just learned to become more tolerable of such things. I’m enjoying the bridge here. This definitely sounds like music I would listen to on a regular basis.

13. Saxophone? Synths? Groovy bass? You cheeky person, you. You put a jazz number on here. :cheesy: This is a chill, smooth, instrumental track. This track reminds me yet again about how I should listen to more jazz. As much as I like jazz, for whatever reason, I don’t listen to it all that often. The only times I really get into it is when I see my college jazz bands in concert. This was pretty much the last thing I expected to hear on this mixtape, but I’m thoroughly enjoying it nevertheless. It’s nice to get a break from the previous stuff by listening to something like this. Listening to this reminds me of the 6th grade, when we were just getting started trying out for instruments. I saw a commercial on TV, and Benny Goodman played. That’s when I decided I wanted to play saxophone. (which, BTW, didn’t happen. :P) This reminds me of how much I love the saxophone. This is probably one of my faves on the tape, honestly.

14. WOW. OK, so this takes me way back to my early childhood. My mom exclusively listens to oldies in the car. That’s the type of music I was raised on, and until I started taking piano lessons, it was the only music I knew. This takes me back to those good ol’ times, back to when I could actually tell you who this artist was. :laugh4: I know for sure I’ve heard this before, but it’s been so long, I’ve forgotten. Actually, I may ask my parents if they know. -goes-

So, scratch that. They don’t want to be bothered with such trivial things, apparently. I know I’ve heard this person before, though, as well as this song. It’s killing me that I don’t know offhand the person who does it. I guess this’ll have to wait until the reveal.

15. Ahhh, back to guitar and all that good stuff. Again, this is something I would definitely listen to on a regular basis, probably. It has a good, driving bass line and a distinctive guitar bit, both of which tend to repeat themselves. Again, it sounds like more than one person is singing here. I could be wrong, though, because the vocalists on this sound like the same person. I don’t know. I don’t think I know the song well enough to make that sort of determination. Ick, so the vocals slipped on that chord right then. OK, dude, I know you’re a boy, so you can stop singing about it. Yeah, that bit kinda annoyed me. :P I don’t think they meant any harm, though.

16. The beginning reminded me a lot of “Knife” by Grizzly Bear, even though that’s not what it is. The guitar riff is similar, though, and they’re in the same key of B major. They also have that same sort of feel. I’m not a fan of the vocals at all. Sorry. It’s like what I told you in the other track, though, so it’s no big deal. OK, so I just heard a bit about a washing machine. Does that have to do with anything, I wonder? Oh gosh, ick. That guy should not try to sing that high if he’s going to whine that badly. >_< OK, I’m quite annoyed by him now. I’m really sorry. I’m trying really hard to find something good to say about the vocals, but the more he sings, the more it drives me bonkers. At least the background stuff is good. I’ll give it that much. OK, so the group bit (that was a cappella in nature), that part was OK, so it’s not like the vocals suck all the time. I’ll try to give this a few more listens before I denounce it completely.

Overall, I have to say that I really enjoyed this mixtape. I heard a few favorites, as well as quite a few things I haven’t heard of before. You did a great job on the mixtape, and I commend you. I can’t wait to find out who you are, as well as the songs I’ve been listening to. :D

Final reminders sent out to the 8 whom hasn't yet submitted.

If they don't submit they will get named & shamed and could be excluded from future mixtape exchanges if the next organiser wishes to take this into account.

^That sounds fair enough. Especially if they just can't be bothered. If they have a good enough reason however it might be a bit unfair.

Still no mixtape for me :(

Nor reviews for mine or Bea's tapes

Hello Violet!!

So, I'm your mixtape maker :D !

Yeah, I know, you don't know me at all and you just might be thinking "how comes she knows me??". Freaky... :p

Well to be honest, I noticed you on the last mixtape exchange, I thought your review was amazing! And then you said you were really into music so...

I'm glad you liked the title of the mixtape! I was really honored when I saw you were my partner but also stressed, I admit it! So yeah, you were kind of special to me ;)

I guessed you'd know some of the artists but didn't stalk you that much cause I didn't want to be too influenced and also wanted this mixtape to reflect as much as possible my personnality and my tastes.

Anyway, thank you very for your review which was, again, amazing!! Really enjoyed reading it! I'm so glad you liked the mixtape overall!

One more thing and I'll stop my bullshit, I really want to thank some coldplayers that made me discover lots of awesome bands lately: Tauiwi, Aliceincoldplayland and Khalplay :)

Ok so, let's go!

Track #1 : Adultery – Little Comets- Adultery (single release) – 2010 – UK

So, it's not Kele! Little Comets, from UK. No album yet! Upbeat was the first word that came to my mind when I first discovered them in the last mixtape I recieved (thanks Tauiwi!)! I thought it would be a great opener for this mixtape and I'm glad you agreed :)

Track#2 : New Houses – Two Door Cinema Club- Four Words To Stand On (E.P) – 2009- Ireland

Oh yeah! A Two Door Cinema Club fan :)

Yes, it's them!! Maybe you don't know this song because it's from their first E.P which is great!! I commend "Standing On Ghosts" on this E.P which is one of my fav with "New Houses". I like this song cause it's a little bit more "quiet" and Alex's voice is really emphasized on this track in my opinion. Tauiwi got me onto them :)

Track#3 : Eyes As Candles – Passion Pit – Manners – 2009 – USA

So, a great electro-pop band I discovered thanks to the previous mixtape exchange (yeah, still the same coldplayer :D ). One of my fav on their debut album with "Sleepyhead" and "Let Your Love Grow Tall". The singer has a great voice in my opinion though I admit it might be a bit boring if you listen the album on repeat.

Track#4 : Some Kind Of Nature (feat. Lou Reed) – Gorillaz – Plastic Beach – 2010 – UK

Haha, I thought you'd probably know this one! I really wanted to put some Plastic Beach stuff here :)

I hesitated with "White Flag" which is probably my fav... But well, I like Lou Reed's voice in this one and thought it would fit with the previous track. Glad you liked my choice :)

Track#5 :My Boy Builds Coffins – Florence + The Machine – Lungs – 2009 – UK

I could have bet you'd knew this one! Nothing else to say about her, totally agree with you :)

Wanted to put at least one track from her, I chose this one cause it's not particularly famous I think and I thought it'd fit well with the following track. Thanks Khalplay for making me discover her ;)

Track#6 : One Who Loves You The Most – Brett Dennen – So Much More – 2006 – USA

Brett Dennen, one my fav artist in this genre! A californian young man with an awesome voice in my opinion. But I easily understand that you didn't like it as it's pretty particular! It's from his 2nd album (he actually made 3), my favourite album so far. If you manage to like his voice I totally commend all of his albums which are all great!

Track#7 : Sweet – Jehro – Jehro – 2006 – France

So glad you like it! Haha, totally agree with your "old mexican" feeling! This man is awesome, one of the rare french artists I absolutely love. He sings in english and in spanish on this album. He can make comitted songs, sad songs or some songs like this one, happy and funny. Hardly commend his self titled album!! Tell me if you are interested! This one is his first, actually preparing the second one (can't wait!).

Track#8 : See The World – Gomez – How We Operate – 2006 – UK

I was afraid you'd know this one! Glad you didn't! Discovered it on a TV show (maybe House M.D, not sure). The video clip is really well done, makes you wanna travel :)

I really like the vocals too cause, as you said, it fits perfectly! (Sha la la la la laaaa :) )

Track#9 : Fontanelle – Girls In Hawaii – From Here To There – 2004 – Belgium

Yeah, I don't understand the lyrics sometimes too, have to read them :laugh3:

It's a belgian band, Girls In Hawaii, so maybe it explains this weird english as it's not their mother tongue.

This album is just amazing... Didn't know which one to pick for the tape as I absolutely wanted to put one of theirs. I REALLY commend this album, although there are 2 songs I don't like that much. It's a bit dark though but not too much I think, that's what I loved.

Track#10 : Flume – Bon Iver – For Emma, Forever Ago – 2007 – USA

Haha, I was almost sure you'd know this one! But it was impossible for me not to put one song of this fantastic album on this tape... Discovered them thanks to Aliceincoldplayland (thank you again for that!) and it was just a revelation... Justin Vernon is really fascinating! Glad you like them too =)

Track#11 : Gold In The Air Of Summer – Kings Of Convenience – Riot On An Empty Street – 2004 – Norway

:stunned: ... You just suprised me!! So you know them! I discovered them by chance, with the song "Homesick" which I loved (I hesitated with this one) so I gave a try to the album which is pretty good! Love the voice, makes me float in the air, although it's not the best voice ever. Glad you liked it, really :)

Track#12 : Used To Be – Beach House – Teen Dream – 2010 - USA

I was afraid you'd know this one! So, it's Beach House, from the outstanding album Teen Dream. Absolutely love this album, there isn't one song to throw up (thank you Aliceincoldplayland!!)!

I think this is an album you have to listen to entirely, it was SO hard for me to pick up one song!! Anyway, if you think it's some music you could listen to on a regular basis, I can't do nothing else but commend you to listen to this album (and send it to you if you want!)... Seriously, I mean the more you'll listen to it, the more you'll be addicted :)

Track#13 : East River Drive – Grover Washington Jr. – Come Morning – 1981 - USA

Oh my God... I'm SO SO SO happy you loved this one! Especially when you said it was one of your faves on the mixtape, it really made my day (or should I say my evening or my night, it's pretty late here!) !! It was risky to put that on a mixtape (already did it last time, can't help myself :D ) so it's great!

I really love jazz and funk due to my musical "life" (I'll explain you one day if you want) ... There are 2 albums for me which are masterpieces in this genre: Kind Of Blue by Miles Davis in 1959 and this one, Come Morning by Grover Washington Jr. in 1981. I found this album while I was looking for some vinyls in a little shop and saw it: the cover was so beautiful... Didn't know that much the man but I bought it anyway... What a surprise when I listened to it! It's now my fav vinyl. Grover is one of the masters of what they call "smooth jazz" and this album was made in 1981, when funky music started to grow up and being really great. We can easily hear some funky influences in this album!

Anyway, glad you liked it! And really, there are some tracks you might love in this album!

Track#14 : Sha-La-La (Make Me Happy) – Al Green – Explores Your Mind – 1975 – USA

Hahaha you made me laugh one more time with your review of this track!! Yeah, so Al Green, the man, the legend... Again, an oldie one, wanted to stay on the previous mood with this little oldie thing but wanted to raise up the rhythm too.

Glad it brought to you some memories!

Al Green is one the best soul singer in the entire world in my opinion. Saw him live last Friday in Paris and it was just like the best gig EVER!

Track#15 : I’ll Never Drop My Sword – The Drums – The Drums – 2010 – USA

It was a bit risky to put some "surfing rock" right after Al Green but well, I guess I'm a cheeky person :p

Glad it didn't shock you!

So The Drums! A great band I discovered lately (thanks Tauiwi and Aliceincoldplayland!) and I love this surfy thing they have on their songs, it smells holidays! It's their debut album and I think it's brilliant in this genre! Easily enjoyable! This one is probably my fav. The E.P is also great!

One thing I love about them is their abiliity of having such happy instrumentals most of the time but not always happy lyrics, love this contrast.

And yeah, he's a boy

Track#16 : I May Be Late – Jil Is Lucky – Jil Is Lucky – 2010 – France

Another french band! Not really famous here (so as Jehro) but they're really talented!

I was a bit disappointed you didn't like the voice! But I understand your feeling, really!

It's their debut album, really varied genres here. I saw them live on a barge, it was really awesome! The musicians are really great and his singing is really impressive (in my opinion, lol!). They ended the set with this song and I liked this choice so I thought it was a good idea for my mixtape... My bad!

So... I guess I'm done!

Thanks again for this awesome review!! If you are interested on some albums, don't hesitate, ask me!!

If you want to share some things with me, I'd be really glad to so, once again, don't hesitate!

Here's a condensed tracklist:

My Review (NO good at this :laugh3:)

No worries :nice: I just hope you listened to it more than once. Hi, I'm William, and I made your tape :nice:

#1.The mixtape opens with a soothing gentle song the kind that can calm you and give you shivers, a repetitive acoustic guitar drumming starts with the singer; who has a great voice and I swear I Recognise it . Hmmm ? :\

Good description. It's a mystical song with the lyrics and instrumentation. The song is Mirrorball by Elbow, so the voice is that of Guy Garvey (he's loaned his voice to Massive Attack if that helps, or maybe you've heard Grounds For Divorce on the radio :P)

#2.Second one is a bit more lively, reminds me of Bombay bicicle club. Gives off a indie vibe and has great guitar and piano playing. ‘swim until you can’t see land’ repetitive but I love it.

Yes, it is called Swim Until You Can't See Land :P The scottish band are Frightened Rabbit, the modern, scottish, indie equivilant of The Smith's I think :dozey:

Naturally, the phrase isn't litteral...

#3.Straight away a piano song, it’s slow paced not quite my sort of song then it kicks into’it’s such a perfect day, Glad I spent it with you’ I’ll be honest it’s good but that is all for me.

Hey, that's Lou Reed! :stunned: This is one of the greatest songs of the 70's, so good Coldplay have covered it :P

#4.Electric guitar and a good drum opener, my kind of song. I Really like this song from the first listen. I Like this band need to know who it is. generally good feeling song that make me feel happy. My favourite so far.

Actually, that's a bass :dozey: Phantom Limb by The Shins, you should check out the music video and New Slang ;) (as a little side note since I saw them on your last.fm page, The Shins singer, James Mercer, is the singer for Broken Bells)

#5.Sounds of harp and a ‘Kate Bush’ sort of singing style it’s nice singing but it kind of annoys me not sure why…not my kind of music if I’m honest.

She has been compared to Lisa Simpson :P She's a little hard to get into, I hated her the first time I heard her, but then she melted me :wacky:

#6.Piano and a ghostly electronic noise, First thoughts are Cool.

beautiful female voice mixed with xylophone, electronic keyboard sounds and violin. It draws you in and it’s definitely a grower, with each listen I Love it more.:)

Turkish Delight - Susanne Sundfør. You should check out The Brothel, that's her big hit right now.

#7.Opens with a ‘WAAAAAH’ slow steady drumming and guitar sounds with the ‘woooaah’ continuing through halfway , then a guitar solo bit and more Woooaah-ing. It’s a bit plain for me although it would make a good lullaby:\

I don't exactly know where the guitar solo is supposed to be :inquisitive: Fleet Foxes - Heard Them Stirring

#8.Drumming, then a Deep voice begins. Piano sounds and a quite familiar tune. Sounds like something off a musical and in a way I Like it. I’m guessing it’s called ‘the fix?’

The deep voice is Richard Hawley, the other voice is Guy Garvey :D and you're right, the song is called The Fix.

#9.Guitar / banjo playing and singing start, bit hard tom understand the lyrrics. Folk kind of song I Must admit it was a bit boring for me.:\

Thought you'd like this :\ Bon Iver covers Peter Gabriel's Come Talk To Me. Folk hero, he's a genius.

#10.Flute playing nice soothing male voice much better when the drumline kicks in with guitar. ‘you run with the devil’ I Like it.:)

I considered this the perfect song for a while :wacky: Fleet Foxes - Your Protector.

#11.Steady drumming, another male voice short and sweet, only 2 minutes long.Do like it sounds museish- could be wrong though.:)

Yes, it is rather Museish. In fact it's them. Muse - Soldiers Poem.

#12.Straight away I’m into it, electro feel guitar and drumming. Indie music- I like it it makes me think Kaiser chiefs or Franz Ferdinand ? My kind of music. ‘come on home’ are the lyrics.

Second guess is right, it's Franz Ferdinand :P and it's called Come On Home, you're good :D

#13.Drumming with a steady rhythm. Man's voice is soft although a bit unclear at

points.

2 sentences :stunned: You should listen to this again. Radiohead - There There (The Boney King Of Nowhere)

#14. Drumming and guitar , really nice tune, voice is quite good something I Would definitely like to listen to.

:)

Frightened Rabbit at their least depressing. You should get The Winter Of Mixed Drinks, you'd clearly like it

#15. great acoustic guitar woman’s voice sounds well.. I‘m not sure just really good. I Think this is also a grower, simple but that’s what I Like about it. Good rhythm to it and nice simple lyrics and with my 3rd listen I LOVE it.

Lightning Dust - Wondering What Everyone Knows. Seriously, if I could lend you this album I would.

#16. Guitar ‘Fade Out’ good drumming and rhythm which is something I Like in a song. Some trumpet quite an interesting sound together . Long instrumental bit

This was supposed to be Track 17 :inquisitive: Built To Spill - Things Fall Apart

#17. Straight into the singing with a woman’s voice, acoustic guitar. Clear lyrics and a clear voice to understand .

Track 16  my mistake. Emma Pollock - The Child In Me.

#18. More acoustic , nice man’s voice ‘nothing’s gonna change my world’ good end to the tape

That nice man is John Lennon  The Beatles - Across The Universe. This is my favorite song. Not only on the mix, but my favorite song.

Good if you like acoustic/ folk but it’s got a mix of more electro stuff aswell. My fave songs would be

2,4,6,10,12,16,15,18

Electro? :inquisitive:

I Really loved it and clearly you read that I Wanted to listen to things I Haven’t heard before and that I Love the acoustic guitar, well either that or it's just a

co-inky-dink. Thanks .x

Didn't know you loved the acoustic guitar so that was a co-inky-dink :D I thought you were a drummer :uhoh: Also, It seems you focus more on instrumentation than on lyrics.

I enjoyed making the mix, you have a good taste in music....and now you have an even better one ;)

Leave me a message if there's anything more :P I'd love to know what I did right and wrong. Here's the tracklist, I'm assuming you didn't get the cover or mix title...

1. Elbow - Mirrorball | The Seldom Seen Kid

Track 16 should be 17 and vice versa.

I originally intended 30 seconds of vuvuzela as a hidden track but hit som difficulties :P

Ok so ! I'll review my received mixtape too I guess. Already feel like I am late with this

First of all: my mixtape maker didn't delete all the data off the songs or didn't give any specific order of the songs. This was kind of dissapointing as the surprise element was completely ruined. I just dragged the song into my music player and hopefully it fell in the order you wanted it to.

Because there was no given order, I'll make my own and already put the title names with so that me mixtape maker knows what songs I'm talking about.

Song 1 (Beach Sequence - U2)

Lovely almost instrumental song. It's like a dreamy and a down to earth song mixed together. Simple piano throughout, but still very lovely and soothing. Great song.

Song 2 (White Lies - Paul Van Dyk)

I'm really not the techno person. Did listen to it a few times, but it didn't really get to me.

Song 3 (You And Me - Dave Matthews Band)

Heard of this band before but never tried listening to them. More my style of music then the 2 before: this one was very rythmic, acoustic guitar, calm and nice voice. More upbeat chorus. Nice song.

Song 4 (The Lady With The Spinning Head - U2)

Unmistakeable U2. Didn't hear this one before though. But it's just a typical U2 song which means 'nice but nothing exceptional' for me.

Song 5 (Rock 'n Roll Train - ACDC)

I'm usually not an ACDC fan, but for some reason it didn't bother me this time. It actually fits this tape perfectly. A nice flow into some harder stuff, I still prefer the calmer stuff. You didn't convince me of their epicness :P

Song 6 (Crash Into Me - Dave Matthews Band)

I like this song better thant the other song of them on the tape. It's actually spot on my style of music. I can see myselistening to this song very often. Guitars, nice rythm, lyrics that aren't too melow, passionate singer. Greaat song !

Song 7 ( Ziggy Stardust - David Bowie)

have to say that David Bowie has been a sranger to me music-wise. Untill now !

I know that this must be his most famous song, and I understand why. It'sn ot bad at all. Thank you for broadening my music-cultural knowledge. I can finally talk about David Bowie at parties now

Song 8 (Two Tickets To Paradise - Eddie Money)

I absolutely looooove this kind of retro 80's music. Great guitar riffs and no-nonsense lyrics. This one is a keeper.

Song 9 (Kaze Wo Atsumete - Happy End)

Talking about nonsense, didn't understand a word he sang, but! Lovely dreamy music. Really like the song. I can see myself listening to it in the park or on the bus, not these dull lazy moments.

Song 10 (Porcelain - Moby)

Moby ! Such a classic, you can do no wrong with this song. soo nice and dreamy !

Song 11 (We Are All Made Of Stars)

Already knew this song. Another great one by Moby, but not my favourite tough.

Song 12 (For An Angel - Paul Van Dyk)

Again, not my type of music. It'll be impossible to ever make me really like this, but I've heard worse.

Song 13 (Smart Kid - Porcupine Tree)

I love the soothing intro, then the quiet and calm guitar. Great ay to start a song, grabs your attention immediatly. I'd love for the song to go on so calm the entire time, but it sometimes explodes into some rougher music. But it fits the song perfectly.

All in all: too bad that the song titles were still there. I think it influenced my listening behaviour a little, even if that is not intended. Also, I didn't really discover new bands by listening to this mixtape, but that's probably because there were quite a few artists represented twice on the tape.

But musical-wise I can't really complain. A lot of classics on there some of which I never heard before or wouldn't try listening to them if it wasn't for the tape. Also, it was nice to hear all these different genres together. So thanks to my mixtape maker for broadening my music knowledge and taste!

I originally intended 30 seconds of vuvuzela as a hidden track but hit som difficulties :P

Will, next time vuvuzela symphony from you:P

Generator :awesome:

I've d/loaded these as well so far  Good stuff

Haha, I'll be curious to know what you think

So! Looks my mixtape got reviewed and I'm very pleased with how it turned out :smug:

going to feedback your comments and defending my choce in bold and italics within the quotes and i'll give an overview of artists, songs and albums in the end.

I'd like to thank you for putting so much effort into listening and reviewing my first ever mixtape :smug:(sorry about the cover art that was still there). It's not too long at all! I loved reading it whilst listening to my mixtape and you were right about most things. I think we have much in common about music (we also have the same day of birth btw! September 7 rules ! )

You were a though customer as I barely had something to base myself on (I stalked you a bit but I could only find your previous mixtape). But I'm really glad that you didn't totally dislike it and I really hope that's you'll listen to some to the songs from time to time, or that I made you discover at least 1 new artist/song. I'm sorry that I couldn't really give you varied music, I tried as much as I could but that mixtape just represents my musical taste and I couldn't give you what I don't have or love right?

If you ever need new material of artists you can always pm me, I'll be happy to share.

Thanks again :D

Hello doritji, my mixtape maker! (Sorry, don't know your name, or maybe it's doritji and I'm a bit ridiculous there :laugh3: )

First of all: SORRY FOR THE DELAY!! I read your great reply but didn't have time to answer until tonight, and then my tape got reviewed so...

Anyway, I wanted to say I really enjoyed your tape! And I love reviewing so it was my pleasure! I think if I had listened to it 2 weeks ago it would have made me cry because of my mood at this moment lol!

I'm currently listening to your tape and I'm enjoying it more and more, even the tracks I liked less!

I really have some artists to check out now!

Thank you for putting some Absynth Minded, I already heard one of their songs and found it awesome, you reminded me to listen to them :)

I'm sorry about track 11! But I'm not giving up, gonna give it a try again :)

And my comment about TV show wasn't a bad one at all! I love TV shows and discover some artists thanks to that so... :)

Oh and no, I didn't recognize Bon Iver on track 3 :stunned: !! But I only know For Emma Forever Ago so... I will definetely check out ALL their stuff and Justin Vernon's ones too!

This mixtape had a big personality, I loved the originality of the tracks! Some of them disturbed me but that's what I like in music: I'd rather be disturbed by track than being indifferent to it... I'm glad you took some risks and put what YOU like, that's what the mixtape exchange is made for I guess! Did the same.

No problem for the artwork, that happens! And it didn't spoil me so that's OK!

You're right about me, I'm "jazzy" lol and we have lot of things in common in music (and yeah, 7th September f****** rule, especially when it's a Coldplay gig in a stadium that day :p ). I will surely ask you for some tips about artists, feel free to do the same with me :)

I'm really looking forward to discover more of all these bands I don't know, I'll keep you in touch!

Thanks again!

Yeah sorry about the info and the password! Glad you liked it though. The songs are out of order but I'm pretty sure I know which ones are which. I know the band Young the Giant through a friend. They just recorded their first album (no release date) and I sincerely believe they are going to be the next big band. Their sound is incredible. Plus... the song I put on there... they recorded when they were all 17... so the best is yet to come!

No problem! Yeah, they sound amazing so far. I'll have to keep an eye out for their new album. Thanks again! :D

Will, next time vuvuzela symphony from you:P

The Exogenesis Symphony with a slight adjustment

Hello! And my name is Evelien, like the French Eveline, but then in a Flemisch kind of way

I didn't expect you to answer immedtiately and you didn't have to answer at all, but I really like it that you did :P

I'm so glad that you liked the tape. It was my first time and I really had a hard time making it. It's hard to put in the songs that represent you but that will apply for other people as well. That tape really represents my taste of music and it's just so nice to hear that someone else can relate to it too.

Personally I dont think Absynthe Minded is such a great band, but I knew you'd like this song so that's why I put in on there. So that you'd like at least 1 song :P But it's a song I like too. And you don't HAVE to like track 11, I just took it for granted that someone wholike Coldplay would also like that song, but that's probably just something in my mind :laugh3: But I still think it's a great track and if you come to love it, it would be awesome . Don't hesitate to ask me titles of songs by artists you want to check out, or if you want a link to any of those albums. Promise me you will check out Justin Vernon's live stuff. Really, your life will be so much better after that. The whole atmosphere of those recordings, the emotions. Really, awesome stuff.

I actually planned on going to Paris on that day, to see the concert too but ticket prices were way too high, and I still had to get there too, which also isn't cheap. But non the less: September 7th rules the school ya'll :D

My Review

Hello tapemaker, here comes my review for you:

I received my tape a couple of days ago, but I didn't have time to listen to it, and then I lost some sleep over it contemplating that I didn't have time to listen to it. Deary me!

My tape comes with artwork and the tracks are strangly numbered 1a, 2b, 3c and so forth. There are 14 tracks. The artwork shows a collection of tapes and records scattered all over the place and pictured in reversed colours. I recognise a couple of Coldplay CDs, The Best of Buddy Holly and a record with POLSKA written all over it. Very cool!

Okay, on to the music. I am very keen to meet my mix.

Track 1 sounds like a very short piece of film score which recreates the picture of a dark deserted factory loft in my mind. I’m curious what is going to come next with an introduction like that.

Track 2 kicks off with a thick bass sound followed by heavy piano chords and a female singer singing very rhythmic dark atmospheric chants to me. Funny thing, the first few bars I wasn’t sure what language this song was sung in. I later realized it was indeed English. LOL!

There’s something about her voice. I think I know it, but then it could be anyone. And yet, the more I listen to the song, the more a picture from very long ago blends in. It reads Cat Power. Not sure, if I’m right, but I’m dead certain I like this song. Very much!

Track 3 starts with a very interesting guitar riff, I’m looking forward to the vocal… oh, I know that voice… it’s very typical Kings Of Leon! Great! I think I'm the only person on this board without a Kings Of Leon album in their collection and I need to get all of them rather SOON. Thanks for this track!!!

Track 4 I have never heard before, but two things crossed my mind seconds into the song: REM (tonality of the vocal) and “To Catch A Thief” (Hitchcock film from 1954), because of the first line “You see there is this cat burglar who can(‘t) see in the dark”. There’s a reference to 1954 later in the lyrics too. I’m not entirely sure, if it’s really Michael Stipe. It could be an impostor or a thief (…), but the song is very typical REM, similar to the Andy Kaufman song (Man On The Moon). As for the Hitchcock reference, I’m thrilled, because “To Catch A Thief” is one of my alltime favourite movies! And since I like REM too, I give this song a pair of undisputed thumbs up!

Track 5 goes into a slightly different direction. Listening to the intro I feared a disco cracker was coming up, but the song turned into a low-tempo pop number revolving around a bass drum and a pair of brown eyes. It could be a disco soul diva on a trip. I’m not sure, if I like her voice and I’m still looking for the deeper meaning of this song. I guess it’s just a silly song about a guy with brown eyes. And that’s about it with me and the charisma of this song. It does however fit in very well into the tape!

Track 6 is a screachy guitar number, the melody of which I think I’ve heard before. I have weird associations with this song. There’s a bit of Oasis crossed with Jesus Jones, then some Radiohead mixed with the unknown origin of the melody. It could be some obscure 90s Stone Roses or the like. Definitely the 90s. Not my favourite, but not bad.

Track 7 is introduced by interesting acoustic guitar strumming followed by powerful folky violin. Cool! Is it a Polish lyric? I don’t understand any of it, but it sounds familiar. A couple of years ago I made plans to venture into Polish pop music (inspired by some guy on the Eurovision contest), but I never found the time to really do it. Sounds like it’s worth another try. BTW, I have ancestral ties to the Lublin and Lodz area, but I have always fought off attempts of my dad’s familiy to teach me the language. Stupid, ignorant, German brood… maybe some Polish music will do the trick. This one sounds very promising!

On track 8 a lady saw a saviour… I say she needs one, because her heavy drum track song with elflike vocals was created to accompany the flickering flourescent lights of a torturous interrogation room. At least that’s the association I get from it. Interesting! Music which creates pictures must be from a movie soundtrack.

Track 9 I heard before, but I can’t tell who or what it is. Oasis-like vocals, but the backing track is closer to Bowie's Heroes than to any Oasis track. The more I listen to it, the more I like it. “Kids in the night”… damn it, what is it?

Track 10 Oh holy cow, this is Frank Sinatra and the coffee from Brazil! Love it!

Track 11 is a cool track by a Polish, Russian or Ukranian artist! Anyone who smacks the Bush family’s collective butt is a hero, but the vocal line of this song sucks. With a real melody this could be a huge hit! спасибо!

Track 12 Oh oh, a soft rock number with an English, female vocal and slight, slight traces of a foreign accent. I may be totally wrong, but could it be one of the theatrical Eastern foxtresses who we have seen on the Eurovision? I rest my case, if I’m wrong.

Track 13 is Muse! I recognize that voice anywhere and anytime! I like Muse, but I can’t tolerate his breathing. Can the guy ever breathe in silence? Great song! As usual!

Track 14 has lovely female vocals with lots of guitar harmonies. I like it, but it doesn’t grab me emotionally. Maybe it will grow on me with time.

Dear tapemaker, thank you very much! You chose some wonderful tracks for my tape! There is a lot to explore and discover! Everything fits together perfectly and I intend to not only listen to this tape a lot, but also to X-ray some of the artists, once you told me who they are. Thumbs up!

Please excuse me, if I don’t come across as enthusiastic as I should. Right now, I am so awfully tired, I am not capable of emotional outburst at the moment (its 2:50 am). Deep down I feel honoured by this great tape and the care it was compiled with. Thanks muchas! :D

Hey Evelien, nice to meet you then :D

I totallly agree, making a mixtape is hard for the reasons you mentionned! You did a great job, trust me!

Wow so great choice for Absynthe Minded

Haha yeah, I know I don't HAVE to like this track but I admit that sometimes I feel like I'm missing something, even more in this situation as we have many things in common. So I'll give it a try again and we'll see :)

About Justin Vernon: I PROMISE! I would be silly not to check this out! And I absolutely trust you about life being so much better ;)

Too bad for the gig... It can be really expensive, even more when you travel (I know that). I was there! Front row, middle! One of my best birthday ever, the best Coldplay gig ever I've attend! 7th September surely rule :D

Thanks for the review!

Tracklisting:

A:

1. Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros - Home

American indie folk/neo-psychedelica ensemble, hailling from L.A. My personal summer favorite, this is a song off their first album, released in 2009.

2. Noah and the Whale - My Broken Heart

British indie folk this time; this band used to have Laura Marling and Emmy the Great as background singers. The song is off their sophomore effort, also from 2009.

3. Crooked Fingers - Luisa's Bones

This is more of a project than a band, seeing as this outfit has a rotating line-up. Constant factor and the man who started is Eric Bachmann, formerly of Archers of Loaf (if that means anything to anyone).

4. Foals - Spanish Sahara

You got that one in one go, yay! I love this song.

5. The Coral - Music at Night

This is not Alex Turner's side project, but rather the Merseyside band that inspired him: The Coral. They do 60s psychedelia mostly, with a little folk and country added. I think it's awesome.

6. Kaki King - Sunnyside

This is actually NOT Laura Marling, far from it! This is the work of Kaki King, a female American guitar player and singer-songwriter. Her earlier stuff includes a lot of virtuoso stuff on the acoustic guitar, like tapping and slap-bass techniques, while later stuff leans more toward indie rock.

This is off her latest record, Junior, released a couple of months ago. If you want to hear more of this style, get this album or Dreaming of Revenge; if you're curious about her guitar-y stuff, get ...Until We Felt Red, or Legs to Make Us Longer

7. Charlie McDonnell - A Song About Acne

This is by 19-year old YouTuber Charlie McDonnell, who incidentally is the most subscribed YouTuber in the U.K. He also writes songs about Doctor Who. If you think it's funny, you can check him out on http://www.youtube.com/charlie .

8. Laura Marling - What He Wrote

This actually IS 20-year old Laura Marling, who isn't American at all. It's off her second album, I Speak Because I Can.

B:

9. Enter Shikari - Tribalism

This is by just one British band actually, called Enter Shikari. Their greatest hit (

) is Sorry, You're Not A Winner. They do a weird and IMHO awesome mix of post-hardcore, metal, dubstep, spoken word and trance/hardcore dance. What's also great is that they've been making music and touring completely independently for 7 years and making a huge name of themselves at that.

Oh, and their motto is "Enter Shikari: abusing music genres' worthless boundaries since 2003".

10. Disco Ensemble - Headphones

This is a Finnish (!) punk rock/post-hardcore band.

11. Sonic Boom Six - Floating Away

Again British, this time a ska/reggae/punk fusion.

12. Taking Back Sunday - Cute Without The "E"

Post-hardcore/emo heroes from Long Island, NY. Pioneers of the genre they represent.

13. Alexisonfire - Young Cardinals

Again post-hardcore, this time Canadian. I'll admit this might be a bit rough for some people.

14. Wir Sind Helden - Die Konkurrenz

German indie-rock, and one of my all-time favorite bands. A translation of these particular lyrics can be found at http://lyrics.wikia.com/Wir_Sind_Helden:Die_Konkurrenz .

15. +44 - When Your Heart Stops Beating

This was a side project of Mark Hoppus and Travis Barker of Blink-182 fame. They made one album in this line-up before Blink reunited.

16. Die Ärzte - Junge

Possibly the most famous punk band from Germany, die Ärzte (German for "The Doctors" or "The Physicians") formed back in the 80s and have released 11 albums since.

Wow so Laura Marling was on the mixtape, I just got the tracks confused! Haha yeah not a massive punk fan but my mate would LOVE me for listening to Alexisonfire!! That's great with the Coral track, I definitely see the inspiration for Alex Turner. I am so happy you introduced me to that because Alex Turner inspires me. Definitely going to check out some coral records now. I can't believe I missed Noah and the Whale! Kicking myself.
