How Important Is Album Artwork?

Featured Replies

On a scale of 1-10, how important is album artwork when you are buying or looking for music?

What do you like on album artwork? (bright/dark colors, complex/simple, etc.)

Meh I'll buy an album despite the artwork. That being said it is nice to see bands put effort into it.

I honestly don't care about the album work at all. I'm way too concerned with how the music sounds to worry about pretty pictures on the front of a disc. Maybe I'm a cynic for saying that, but oh well.

If the music is good and I know the band, the album artwork doesn't matter too much to me. But if I don't know the band, the album artwork is what catches my eye and makes me want to listen to them.

That's what happened to me with Muse, I had heard the name before but when I saw The Resistance's album artwork I loved all the pretty colors. :wideeyed:

I think that artwork is important. I feel that it often can help to set the mood of an album, and I really enjoy looking at the artwork when listening to an album, or opening an album for the first time. Of course it's about the music most of all, but I still think it's fairly important.

^ I agree with you.

Oh, I forgot to rate it. Hmmm, 6 or 7.

I hate bad artwork. It just screams LAZY.

So 8

8. Album artwork matters to me. But if the music is good then it's okay.

It doesn't really matter, since a lot of the time when I first download a new album I don't know what the cover looks like. But when I'm in the shop, sure, cover art probably has some sort of subconcious effect on whether I want to buy the album or not.

I judge a CD by its album artwork.

unless I already like the band/artist, I wouldn't care about it.

To me, it's super important. Unfortunately, I think it's grown less important in the digital downloading era. It's too bad, especially when you think about all the iconic covers.

I'd rank it at an 8 or 9.

8. On more than one occasion I've bought an album judging by the cover, and one of them is now in my top 3 albums.

It wouldn't be an influence in my decision to buy the album but a good album artwork shows dedication which is always good

.

When you think about it, you often directly associate the album cover with the music that you are hearing. Especially when its a band you never heard of and you've never seen the band themselves, its the only real image that you have to associate with the music you are hearing. Example, based on the cover what are you more likely to listen to, RPA and the united nations of sound (which for the record is absolutely terrible) or in rainbows?

I'm always interested in what album covers look like, but i definitely think the music on the album is more important than the artwork.

pretty much this.

Strawberry Jam sounds exactly like it's cover.

Its gives you a reference, an image we can associate music with, and, sometimes, it can be the first clue that will reveal us the whole concept of the album (like VLV)...it's exciting to know what Coldplay is going to show us this time with LP5

i mean i'll still buy an album even if the artwork is shit just for the music but I love having the artwork looking nice

I'm more likely to skip past a song on my iPod if their isn't artwork for it or it isn't good.

I can't stand not having artwork.
