Prince William to marry Kate Middleton (AKA so, this royal wedding...)

Featured Replies

There are many kings on this world, and none of their weddings seem to be as interesting to the media as the English ones.

The British monarchy stands out because of its history, tradition and pomp and ceremony.;)

But as I said, there was extra interest because of Princess Di.

Watched about 20mins of this thinking "I better watch it because everyone will be watching it and if something important happens I want to experience it live" before it even really started but that quickly turned to "Why would I want to watch this even if everyone is this is fucking boring if something happens I'm sure I'll quickly hear about it and it'll be all over youtube anyway".

Anway, great that the English people had a work free day and fun.

With only 8 public holidays a year, English people need more public holidays as they are the working men/woman of europe.

The Dump was rather quiet this morning, which was good :)

Being said the most watched international tv event in history. 400 million alone watched the streaming on Youtube apparently. It's really incredible the international reaction to it. Everyone obviously loves a good wedding with pomp and ceremony.

Instead of being amazed at why 2 and a half billion people inexplicably watched this, we should be wondering why 2 and a half billion people inexplicably watched this. All I've heard is how amazing and fantastic it is, and people talking about numbers as you just have, and nobody seems to be asking, but why?

I mean the BBC are essentially the Royals channel, they just have to show this stuff, so if some people are interested in the Royals then yeah I'm not surprised some people will care and watch it. But it is a little depressing that nobody truly gives a shit about the Royals unless they're involved in a scandal, now for everyone to turn around and be 'well wishers' because they've been fed this shit for months, its just a little depressing, shows how fickle and easily controlled people are.

At least it's something happy to watch with all the depressing news lately

Party at the Palace! Newly weds William and Kate dance the night away as Prince Harry finally gives his big speech

  • Prince Harry gave his speech at the reception last night

Their wedding day was a spectacular event watched by two billion people worldwide.

But Prince William and his new bride Catherine finally let their hair down last night with a wedding reception at Buckingham Palace.

Some 300 of the new Duke and Duchess of Cambridge's closest family and friends celebrated with dancing and dinner at the black tie do, which stretched into the early hours.

Mrs Middleton wore a black capped sleeve dress, cut low at the front and back, with a tiered skirt while her daughter Pippa opted for a long emerald green sleeveless dress with a jewelled embellishment on the front and a plunging neckline

A 21ST CENTURY GRACE KELLY?

Her bridal gown married elegance and decorum in perfect measure. But for her wedding reception, the new Duchess of Cambridge could afford to wear something a little different.

Opting for another Alexander McQueen couture creation by the late designer’s protégée Sarah Burton, it again echoed the Fifties styling of Grace Kelly.

The strapless circle-skirted gown had a sweetheart neckline and glittering crystal-studded band at the waist that, if possible, made the bride’s midriff look even tinier than her earlier dress.

While the smooth satin gazar fabric was pure Catherine, the sculptural shape and corsetry mirrored Mrs Burton’s recent Ice Queen-inspired collection for the Alexander McQueen label.

In typical McQueen style though, there was an element of softness, that meant William’s bride was regal, without the element of ice. She chose a soft angora cardigan to ward off the springtime chill, adding an informality to the otherwise very formal attire.

Catherine had literally let her hair down too, no doubt in preparation for the partying ahead, spearheaded by her sister, Pippa and the groom’s brother Prince Harry.

The Queen and Prince Philip handed over the palace for the celebration, which was hosted by William's father Prince Charles.

Perhaps the most eagerly anticipated moment of the night was Prince Harry best man's speech.

The Duchess had switched into a new white outfit for the party - also created by Sarah Burton who designed her wedding gown.

The second dress was a strapless white satin gazar evening dress with a circle skirt and diamante embroidered detail round the waist, St James's Palace said.

Kate was also wearing a white angora bolero cardigan.

The couple left with Charles and his wife the Duchess of Cornwall. The royal party looked happy and relaxed.

The heir to the throne and his son, the new Duke of Cambridge, were dressed in dinner jackets with black bow ties.

Kate had her hair down in her favourite style for the private party.

Camilla wore a light blue hand-embroidered high-collared floor length Anna Valentine dress for the evening.

The new Duchess's family had left the Goring Hotel shortly before 7.30pm.

Her sister Pippa had changed from her bridesmaid dress into a long emerald green sleeveless dress with a jewelled embellishment on the front and a plunging neckline.

Her hair was pinned up at the back and she was carrying a clutch bag.

Kate's mother Carole Middleton smiled after stumbling slightly as she came down the stairs at the hotel and her son James placed a guiding hand on her back as she climbed into a silver people carrier.

The bride's father and brother wore black tuxedos with bow ties.

She was a beautiful and amazing bride they both seemed to be so relaxed

I wish them both the best of luck and it's such a shame that Dianna wasn't here to see this :'(

My 1s thought - Kate is freakin thin :|

She's slim, not thin. She doesn't look unhealthy in any way whatsoever. Compared to some of the catwalk models out there, she's obese!

  • William and Kate spent first night together at Buckingham Palace
  • Kenya, Scotland, the Caribbean and Australia possible destinations

Newly-weds William and Kate flew off on their honeymoon this morning - although the destination remains a mystery.

After spending their first night as a married couple together at Buckingham Palace, they left in a helicopter this morning.

They began their journey by emerging hand in hand from the palace's garden entrance, located at the side of the imposing building.

Following their very public wedding yesterday, the Prince William and Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, are hoping for privacy on their honeymoon.

In bright sunshine, they strolled along the gravel path and out into the open space where the maroon helicopter was waiting.

The Duke's new wife wore a light blue dress, dark jacket and platform shoes, while he was dressed in his trademark chinos with a pale blue shirt and navy jacket - a casual look in complete contrast to yesterday.

The couple stopped briefly to chat to two Royal Household footmen and appeared to be thanking for them after their stay.

When they finished, William put his hand on the small of his wife's back and they went over to talk to the helicopter pilot before climbing on board.

Before they got on the aircraft, palace staff had carried out some of their luggage, which included a bouquet of white blooms.

The couple are said to still be on a high after their wedding day which was both an intimate family affair and a global event televised across the world.

Kenya is thought to be the most likely destination as a punter tried to put £5,000 on William and Kate heading back to the country where he proposed last year.

But the Caribbean, Australia, Jordan and Scotland are among the destinations that the couple may have chosen.

They spent last night partying at the Palace with their close family and friends in celebration of their wedding.

Palace joker: Prince Harry leaves Buckingham Palace in a coach - while wedding guest Chelsy Davy left in a royal car with Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie

At the black-tie do, which started with dinner in the palace's lavish ballroom and ended with dancing into the small hours, Prince Harry gave his best man's speech.

Around 300 family and friends attended the lavish bash last night where they partied until 3am.

William may have flown out in a helicopter this morning, but his younger brother and best man Harry had to make do with a minibus.

The Prince was photographed leaving the Palace at 3am - while Chelsy Davy left with Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie in a car.

The couple are now known as the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge after the Queen bestowed the title on her grandson.

Royal wedding guests said they were feeling a little jaded today.

As Kate and William flew off from Buckingham Palace in a helicopter to begin married life together, one guest described how the celebrations had continued into the early hours.

Kate's family, along with some of their guests, stayed at the exclusive Goring hotel near the palace.

Family friend Tony Ainsworth, from Dorset, said outside the hotel: 'It has been an historic occasion. After the concerns of getting to the church on time, it all went smoothly.

'We had a party at the hotel last night that went on well into the evening, so we're feeling a little jaded this morning. Carole and Mike (Middleton) made an appearance as well.

'I went to bed around 1am but I heard guests stumbling around at 5am, coming back from the palace, which woke me up.

'My own daughter got married two years ago and, as a father of the bride, I thought Mike handled himself brilliantly, James also gave an incredible address.

'I hear everyone's talking about Pippa. She looked stunning. She's the most eligible girl in the country right now.'

Even Kate Middleton didn't know where she was going on honeymoon.

Bookmakers had this morning made Kenya the 3-1 joint favourite after a punter had tried to place a £5,000 stake.

But they may continue their wedding theme of championing the UK and spend part of their break in Scotland, where both the Queen and the Prince of Wales have private homes they could use.

Bookies are also offering 3-1 odds on William and Kate heading north of the border.

The Duke is known to have a deep affection for Africa, and would be on safe romantic territory if he chose to take his wife to Kenya, where he proposed to her last year.

Jordan, with its plethora of ancient sites, has also been touted as a possibility for the couple's honeymoon.

The Middle Eastern country would no doubt have nostalgic appeal for Kate as her family spent two years there when she was a child. However its proximity to hotspots such as Syria could count against the country.

If they are keen to escape the prying eyes of the media, a secluded Caribbean island might be a safe choice.

Bequia and Necker Island all have the benefit of being easily secured, as does the ultra-exclusive Mustique, where Kate's parents Carole and Michael Middleton are frequent visitors.

Lizard Island, off the coast of Queensland, Australia, has also emerged as a contender.

However, with William resuming his pilot duties in two weeks, the significant jetlag likely from such a far-flung trip could rule it out.

They may also be tempted by Chile, as they both spent time in the South American country during their gap years before university.

Thirty years ago, William's parents the Prince and Princess of Wales spent the first stage of their honeymoon in Romsey in Hampshire, where they stayed at Broadlands, the family home of the Mountbattens.

The second part of their holiday was spent on board the royal yacht Britannia. They boarded at the Rock of Gibraltar before cruising to Algeria, Tunisia, Sicily, the Greek islands and Egypt.

Finally, they went to Scotland to spend time with the Royal Family in Balmoral.

Honeymoon destination odds

3/1 Kenya; 3/1 Scotland; 7/2 Jordan; 11/2 Cornwall, 6/1 South Africa,7/1 Caribbean, 10/1 Mustique; 10/1 Tanzania, 20/1 Seychelles, 20/1 Saint Tropez, 25/1 Australia, 25/1 Monaco, 25/1 Maldives, 33/1 Wales (all odds from William Hill)

Mark, I thought that you won't be watching the wedding? Why is it then that you're paying more attention to this thread than most people and defending the whole issue when you didn't even watch the wedding? (Judging based on the poll)

I'm giving a wild guess that you did watch the wedding in the end.

At least it's something happy to watch with all the depressing news lately

I've got to agree with this...

My 1s thought - Kate is freakin thin :|

Kate icon of fashion mode she loves living not so stupid royal snob but like taking of itself, is rich person but as many rich people, she does not know poverty and poor people. and have strong personality yes for to kill animals living.

Who the fuck cares wether Samantha Cameron wore a hat or not?.

Nobody, I hope. I don't even care whether she was there or not.:dozey:

Well an article posted a couple of pages back seems to suggest some people did because it 'breaks tradition'.

My whole stance on the Royal Wedding is, I hope they do have a happy life together but I don't know them personally and have no interest in thier big day it had no bearing on my life and I didn't watch it yesterday, I was still asleep when it happened.

Proudly republican America predictably led the charge as the world celebrated the royal wedding with wall-to-wall media coverage and celebrations as far away as Antarctica and even outer space.

The event drew an estimated two billion television viewers around the world, with many broadcasters scheduling royal-themed programmes long into the day.

Some of the biggest names in US broadcasting, including Barbara Walters, Katie Couric and Diane Sawyer, had decamped to London in an operation comparable in scale to a presidential election.

Aided by squads of British analysts, they provided American viewers with advice on such crucial etiquette questions as who will now courtesy to whom as well as the inevitable minute dissections of the wedding dress.

The royal theme continued on many channels with daytime show hosts and audiences alike wearing hats and tiaras in studios kitted out in Union flags and suits of armour.

The ABC network even found their own all-American William and Kate to marry on air. However, the presenters on the American morning talk show The View marred the celebrations with controversial comments.

Comedian Joy Behar said the Queen had dressed like a 'bumble bee' while comedian Sherri Shepherd asked 'where are all the black people?'

Harry pays tribute to William 'the dude'...but ditches his comments about Kate's killer legs in speech that left her 'touched'

  • William and Kate leave Buckingham Palace by helicopter this morning
  • Couple spent first married night together at the Palace
  • Prince Charles quipped about his son going bald during speeches
  • Harry leaves party in minibus at 3am - while Chelsy Davy leaves in car with Beatrice and Eugenie

Prince Harry paid a moving tribute to his brother ‘The Dude’ and his new sister-in-law ‘The Duchess’ during a heartfelt speech at their evening wedding reception on Friday.

Harry also told the couple’s friends and family that he loved Kate ‘like a sister’ and how the story of the couple’s long romance ‘inspires’ him. According to several guests, Kate was ‘very emotional and touched’ by Harry’s tribute and even shed a tear during the evening’s festivities.

Harry delivered his best man’s speech, which he had been working on for the past fortnight, at 9.30pm after 300 of the couple’s close family and friends had enjoyed a three-course meal with vintage champagne.

Kate's second dress was a strapless white satin gazar evening dress with a circle skirt and diamante embroidered detail round the waist. William stuck to the safe bet of a dinner jacket and bow tie

He had asked his best friends Thomas Van Straubenzee and Guy Pelly to be a sounding board ahead of the speech and is understood to have dropped a reference to ‘Kate’s killer legs’ from the final edit.

‘Harry had some joke in about how he had immediately given Kate the thumbs up when William first brought her home because she had such a great pair of pins, but he didn’t want to embarrass her,’ said a friend.

According to sources inside the evening reception, Harry’s speech was ‘warm and affectionate’ and peppered with good humour and jokes.

One partygoer leaving Buckingham Palace event in the early hours of Saturday told The Mail on Sunday: ‘Harry said William was the perfect brother. It was exactly how you would expect a best man’s speech to be. He cracked loads of jokes about William. He called him a “dude” several times. He kept coming back to it, saying “What a dude”.’

Harry described his brother’s relationship with Kate as ‘inspirational’ and to much applause added: ‘William didn’t have a romantic bone in his body before he met Kate, so I knew it was serious when William suddenly started cooing down the phone at Kate.’

Harry, famous for his impersonations, then did a high-pitched impression of Kate calling William ‘Billy’ and of his brother calling Kate ‘baby’, to much hilarity from the guests.

Charles's jokes at wedding breakfast

Earlier in the day it was the Prince of Wales who had been playing the joker, making a comment about his son’s thinning hair during the wedding breakfast at Buckingham Palace.

‘The thing about growing older is that your children get taller than you so they can see your bald spots. Now in my case, I can see his,’ Prince Charles remarked, to which William retorted: ‘You got there before Harry!’ to much laughter.

William delivered a brief speech at the wedding breakfast where he proudly introduced his wife as ‘Mrs Wales’ even though the couple will be formally known as the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.

‘It was received with cheers and shouts of hoorah,’ said one guest. ‘William and Catherine were amazingly relaxed, and although it was a formal affair, it felt very relaxed and intimate. Catherine was amazingly calm and said how thrilled she was with the day. She and William didn’t leave one another’s side. They said it was the happiest day of their lives.

‘William was very gracious and thanked absolutely everyone for making the day come together. He thanked everyone from the florist to the chef.’

Mark, I thought that you won't be watching the wedding? Why is it then that you're paying more attention to this thread than most people and defending the whole issue when you didn't even watch the wedding? (Judging based on the poll)

I'm giving a wild guess that you did watch the wedding in the end.

Aaaand completely ignored! This is one of the many examples as to why everyone thinks Mark's a dick.

  • 22.7 million Americans watched live coverage on 11 U.S. networks

  • Viewer numbers significantly down on Princess Diana's funeral

  • Global estimate of 2.24million people watching William and Kate's nuptials

Almost 23 million American TV viewers tuned in to watch live coverage of Prince William's marriage to Kate Middleton on Friday, despite the wedding taking place before dawn in much of the U.S.

But the viewing interest in the nuptials was far below that for Princess Diana's funeral in 1997, according to TV audience data released by Nielsen.

Nielsen said 22.7 million Americans out of a population of about 310 million watched live coverage of the Royal Wedding on 11 U.S. networks.

Funeral of Princess Diana, September 6 1997, 33.2 million viewers

In comparison, 33.2 million tuned in to watch the funeral of Princess Diana in London in September 1997. Diana, the mother of Prince William, was killed in car crash at the age of 36.

The Nielsen figures did not cover the millions more who watched Friday's wedding ceremony on smaller U.S. networks, nor online, where interest in the couple has rivalled coverage of superstar movie actresses and pop singers in recent months.

E! Online alone reported a record 23.6 million page views on Friday thanks mostly to its coverage of the London nuptials and live streaming of the royal wedding ceremony.

Some of biggest names in American broadcasting made their way to London to cover the royal event.

Barbara Walters joined Diane Sawyer to anchor ABC's coverage in a special edition of Good Morning America, which had 8.7 million viewers - the programme's highest ratings in nearly 20 years.

On NBC, Today Show hosts Matt Lauer and Meredith Vieira fronted the coverage from outside Buckingham Palace.

Worldwide, other estimates put the global television and online audience for the wedding at 2.4 billion people - more than one in three of the global population if the figure is accurate.
