NumbersGirl
^ Ha ha I had iTunes on random and that version came on about an hour ago. I thought to myself, "I like this live version better than the studio version because of Jonny's part." :| I'm not sure that was the peak of his skills though. Will have to wait until LP5, as apparently he is doing all sorts of experimentation and stuff.

laga
I love that version better for the same reason. I'm not sure about that. The AROBTTH era has certainly meant a lot since it's from where we get what people refer to as "the Coldplay sound", but I think he's done a lot since then, maybe in a different direction. Anyways, mmm...I don't know much about technical stuff, so I may sound like a completle ignorant, but I think that during the Viva era he has expanded, let's say, what he does in terms of effects and sounds. I don't know if call it an improvement, but it is certainly an expansion and something different from what we were used to listen from him. As Carrie said, he seems to be doing new stuff with LP5, we'll have to wait to judge that.

toddbluezoo
I don't like admitting it, but Jonny is really not that good of a guitar player (or at least he hasn't really proven to us that he is). Like when I try to think of really iconic or good riffs that he's played I first think of Yellow, In My Place and Talk. But Yellow is what like four different notes or something? And In My Place is literally four notes repeated for the entire song and he didn't even write the Talk riff. I know that he isn't about to take an extended solo during songs, I mean Coldplay is not Phish and Jonny isn't Trey, and that's totally fine. I love both bands and their songs are beautiful and work great. But I wouldn't mind a little more creativity with Jonny's solos. Lost! and Fix You are both amazing songs (and the end of Fix You still sends shivers down my spine) but his solos certainly leave something to be desired. I feel like starting with X&Y and certainly on Viva La Vida he's started relying way too much on effects, compared to Parachutes and Rush Of Blood. Maybe I was alone in thinking this, but I was ecstatic when he sold his Telecasters (one because I wanted them haha) and two because there's no better way to reinvent/retool your style of playing than getting all new equipment. And the fact that he's settled with Stratocasters makes me excited to hear what they've been working on and I'll bet it's a big improvement (guitar wise) over what we've been hearing lately. Sorry, that was long haha :)

laga
You have a very good point there toddbluezoo, especially the relying too much on effects bit. There's a huge diference between the first two and the last two albums.

His guitar was so great in that song omg. the guitar part in Violet Hill was pretty awesome, at least in my opinion. to me, the guitar parts in AROBTTH don't really stand out from guitar parts in any of the other albums.
laga
I think I like the guitar parts better in live songs than on the album versions, like the example here AROBTTH. I love the guitar in Moses and The One I Love, but they're not on the album :blank:

Guest howyousawtheworld
The songs and production in X&Y and VLV haven't allowed much room for Jonny to exploit his guitar skills as we saw on Live 2003. He's an atmospheric/song supporter guitarist which is great though because they always are the best. Non sensicle attention seeking guitarists are just way too boring for me. Sure I respect their technical skills but that's as far as it goes but just because you have great technical skills doesn't make you the best. It's all about how you use a guitar and for me the likes of those in heavy metal and glam rock don't use it well.
Megalomania
I think that Jonny could definitely improve if he was given room for a giant guitar solo in a song, but he really hasn't had the chance. . . .
LFDianne
Didn't he say in an interview during VLV that Strawberry Swing was the most difficult song he's played? ITs not as "in your face" but I think it's technically very challenging. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

Corkus
I suppose I'm a little unclear on what we're using to define "skills". If we mean the most impressive showcase of his abilities, then yes, I'd agree that AROBTTH and the live tracks played then featured the most present and complex guitar work. But I seriously doubt his skills have somehow deteriorated since then, especially since we haven't seen Coldplay perform songs like AROBTTH recently. More Jonny in the future would be nice, though I don't necessarily think it has to be "more difficult" guitar.
Karencorpse
I think Jonny is underrated. He should do more guitar parts.
the_gloaming09
of all the members of the band he's the least talented. I think he has good fills or chords, but he's nothing too special IMO
Cobalt
I wanna hear more atmospheric parts  Also we saw another Jonny solo in 42, Violet Hill etc... although I realise you guise probably mean album as a whole.
